ith people and capital moving to Houston and The Woodlands in record numbers from California, the East Coast, Mexico, and literally from everywhere around the world, the Greater Houston Metropolitan area has become a fabulous global destination entering a new and incredibly exciting new era of growth and opportunity. I can't stop being amazed at the pace at which infrastructure, developments, and construction are expanding our horizons in every direction, and yet unable to get caught up with the demand. New businesses are opening daily, investment capital is pouring in, luxury brands are making great efforts to capitalize from a Houston that keeps on expanding North and West like there is no tomorrow. In my recent visit to Market Street in The Woodlands, I found fabulous brands like Louis Vuitton leading the way to other top fashion names that ought to be there, which was just a total delight. The Woodlands is finally getting the missing brands their affluent residents deserve to line up with businesses at the level of Vander Dys Fine Jewelers and Rolls-Royce of North Houston. Join me in celebrating Houston and The Woodlands, in this issue and the next one, as we approach 2022 that will witness -once again- what we as Houstonians are capable of. Enjoy! Celebrate!

Jade

of all Jewels

A New York City native, Jade is a self-identified 47th Street girl. It’s where she feels at home and it’s in her blood; it’s where the artistry of jewelry-making starts and where her familial legacy began. Starting her career as a diamond buyer, Jade’s holistic understanding of the diamond sourcing process plays a pivotal role in how she discerningly selects her stones for each collection. While Jade is usually seen wearing a rotating collection of her designs, the one piece she never leaves at home is her loupe.

After years of experiencing traditional designs that eventually came to feel generic, Jade felt the jewelry world was in need of a new direction and started her own line. She often refers to the three great loves of her life: her twin teenage sons and her company, Jade Trau. Like with her children, Jade devotes the same care and nurture to her company and to each piece she creates. From the meticulous selection of her diamonds to the process of crafting the perfect setting to compliment them, Jade’s intimate connection with her designs allows her to tap into a unique market of fine jewelry - pieces that stand out, but still feel authentic; they are easy to wear and feel almost like a second skin. Jade’s philosophy is that diamonds are meant to be worn, and if they are not being loved, she aims to breathe new life into old designs with both her collections and restyling projects- especially those with stories embedded in them. Jade Trau is the new ‘diamond classic.’

STRENGTH IN OUR DIVERSITY

ith over 90 different nations represented, Houston is home to the third-largest consular corps in the United States, and according to a WalletHub.com survey released in April, Houston continues to be the most diverse city in the U.S. since 2013, followed by New Jersey, New York, Dallas, and Los Angeles, in that order. With Arlington, TX moving up from ninth to the eighth position, three Texas cities make the Top Ten list. Houston's rank was initially established in 2013 when it became national news, and it has been confirmed regularly thereafter. The Houston metropolitan area, which includes Harris, Montgomery, Fort Bend, Galveston, Waller, and several other counties, reaches a population of over 7.15 million residents and growing fast. 140 different languages are spoken in Houston, with Spanish being the most prominent after English. Our population is 48 percent Hispanic (with people from over 22 Hispanic nationalities), 29 percent Anglo, 15 percent Black, and 8 percent Asian, Middle Eastern, and other ethnicities. Of course, these numbers may slightly vary at different sources, but they are accurate overall.

By Martin Gondra, Publisher, and Gino Frediani, Senior Editor The question is: What makes Houston and The Woodlands ore desirable than other U.S. and Texas cities? The answer is complex but it boils down to two simple factors: our economy and overall lifestyle. H-Town is a progressive (attracting as many millennials as Austin), well-rounded, desirable place to live, with a great education system that makes it a wonderful place to raise a family. The shopping and dining opportunities are endless, with incredible cuisines from literally all nations around the world. We have a fabulous housing market with everything bigger except for the pricing, which remains below the national average. Our economy continues to be solid and getting stronger by the day, with plenty of employment, and remarkable growth opportunities for businesses across just about every industry, offering professionals, entrepreneurs, and investors unlimited wealth potential, even with the impact from Covid19. With Texas quickly becoming the most moved-to state in the U.S. next to Florida, Houston is attracting well over 250 people every day, with a high percentage coming from California, New YorkNew Jersey, Mexico, and other Latin American countries.

SUCCESS POWERHOUSE Haley García, one of the founding partners at Compass real estate in Houston, and the company's spearhead in The Woodlands is experiencing this extraordinary phenomenon firsthand. Acknowledging the fact that there is a massive increase in activity all across the region, Haley sees a larger proportion of this taking place in the northern part of Houston, pushing through The Woodlands and into Conroe. This shouldn't come as a surprise, since Houston already has a highly saturated housing market. However, it's worth noting that given the size of the city, the activity in Harris County is still substantially greater than all surrounding counties. "This trend of unusual numbers of people moving into Houston and The Woodlands, and the consequent shortage in the real estate inventory, has put a very desirable burden on developers, who can't catch up with the demand" -Haley explained. Based on her vast experience as a result of many years in the industry in this market, her prediction is that this upward trend will last two years, probably more. But the growth and positive impact on our economy will extend for decades. This is a great time to invest in real estate, and for that matter, in most types of businesses. Our economy is flourishing, not only in real estate, but in a multitude of supporting service and manufacturing industries, and the industries supporting them. Needless to say, with her skills and reputation, Haley is bound to further her own success record by helping people fulfill their dreams or investment goals. It's interesting to note the way in recent years and even throughout the challenging 2020 and into 2021, The Woodlands has truly evolved into this amazing community where you can find awardwinning restaurants, and shopping at some of the best retail stores. The luxury market has substantially grown in this prized township, where we have noticed alluring Market Street, Waterway, and Hughes Landing, attract high-end brands like Louis Vuitton, Vander Dys Fine Jewelers, Chanel, Tiffany & Co., Eddie Bauer, Michael Kors,

HYATT Centric, Woodhouse Day Spa, Peloton, SUITSUPPLY, Tesla, Mastro's, TRIS Restaurant, Morton’s Grille, Tommy Bahamas, and Jasper's, among many others. The Woodlands ranked the No. 1 best city to live in America. In the last 10 years, The Woodlands has more than doubled its population, has been rated best community, best public schools, top for family friendliness, and jobs; great health and fitness, outdoor activities, and the same great diversity as part of Houston's metropolitan area; people are moving here from all parts of the world. Richard Vander Dys, founder of Vander Dys Fine Jewelers, one of the top jewelers in the country, has been part of The Woodlands for over two decades; since moving to The Woodlands, he has experienced tremendous success attracting discerning and highly demanding clients from across the world that want to get the quality, rare gems, and watches, while experiencing a level of customer service that leaves a memorable memory for a lifetime. Richard has had the opportunity to interact with the most affluent, and see the way this very special luxury market has grown over the years, to become the wonderful metropolis we all celebrate today and proudly call our home. Richard acknowledges that it has been an incredible journey and privilege to be part of this amazing Texas community: "Thousands every year have been blessed to be able to capitalize on the benefits of a city that offers everything you can possibly need to be successful. And those that are just moving into the area, couldn't have picked a better time to get started in a new world of opportunities. The future is here, and the future is now" - Richard added.

Above all else, our most valuable asset is ourselves, our people. Houstonians are a class of its own, talented, innovative, productive, highly motivated, friendly, generous; always ready to help, and stretch a helping hand across our borders, as it was abundantly proven with Katrina. And a resilience second-tonone that was put to the test while going through Harvey.

CELEBRATION OF SUCCESS Pablo Del Gado General Manager Rolls-Royce Motor Cars North Houston Lamborghini Houston McLaren Houston

In our search for deeper insight regarding the growth and lifestyle in our region, particularly within the affluent segment, if there is someone who knows its ins and outs in Houston, The Woodlands, and Sugarland areas, that is Pablo Del Gado, General Manager at Lamborghini Houston, McLaren Houston, and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars of North Houston, three of the four brands at the most luxurious automobile campus in Southeast Texas, IndiGO Auto Group. Interestingly enough, out of the 34 authorized Lamborghini dealerships in the country, Lamborghini Houston is one of the top four in sales, only competing with Beverly Hills, Newport Beach, and Miami. This in itself is a major indicator of Houston's wealth and lifestyle tendencies. While talking about Rolls-Royce trends, we learned that the vast majority of the vehicles Rolls-Royce of North Houston sells remain local; this is actually true for all three brands. This factor is easy to gauge based on the service they provide to their clients, and it represents another clear indicator of the luxury lifestyle trends of the Houston metropolitan area. Another interesting component Pablo points at is that Greater Houston has one of the fastest-growing and most diverse clientbase for supercars -Lamborghini and McLaren- and the ultraluxury Rolls-Royce, comprised of people from all over the world that are moving into Houston and surrounding cities. Although they come from all walks of life, what they all share

when buying these types of vehicles is their well-deserved desire to celebrate their success. While Houstonians stay more on the conservative side -Pablo points out-, they won't be shy to spend on what they like and want. It was also interesting to find out through our conversation that IndiGO's brands -which in Houston also includes Porsche- are seeing a growth in their younger clientele. This came as no surprise as we are well aware of the fact that Houston is attracting Millennials as much as Austin is, but wealthier. Pablo highlights the fact that Houston is a fun city to live in. When it comes to car enthusiasts, there are a lot of things always happening: rallies, auto shows, car meets, and track events. Talking McLaren, with 22 dealerships in the U.S. and 80 around the world, there are only five dealerships in the country ranked as "motorsport dealerships" for the supercar brand. A Motorsport Dealership means it is certified and authorized not only to sell and service the vehicles but also to support them at a race track. Let's keep in mind that McLaren produces race cars that are also street-legal. Texas pride McLaren Houston is one of them, and another great indicator of Houston's excellence. Forecasting the direction of our economy based on the current conditions, "we are seeing an upward trajectory over our sales and service, tied to the growth of Houston. I can only tell you that the years that are ahead of us are the best to come" - Pablo shared.

THE GRAND CITY of

HOUSTON I

t’s a huge honor to dedicate this article to this grand and wonderful city that we are proud to call home. A city that has weathered so many changes over the course of the last few decades – many good while some not so good – but always coming back better and stronger than before!

Houston Strong!

It was back in October of 1991 that we moved to this dynamic city. Our international airport was called Houston Intercontinental Airport then – and was renamed Bush Intercontinental in 1997.

The international terminal, Mickey Leland, had just inaugurated the year before, and through the windows, as one sat at their gate waiting to board their plane, the infamous orange- and goldcolored planes of CONTINENTAL AIRLINES, glistened in the heat of the Texas sun. Gordon Bethune, CEO of Continental Airlines from 1994, until he retired in 2004, made the company, based out of our city, an airline that citizens of Houston were proud to call their own. In 1994, with the implementation of NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) eliminating all tariffs and non-tariff barriers of trade and investment between the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Houston suddenly emerged as one of the new epicenters of trade between both Mexico and Canada. The Port of Houston is the busiest port in the US, with respect to foreign tonnage – and only 2nd in respect to total tonnage.

LIFESTYLE During the ’70s and mid-’80s, Houston’s economy soared, as it leaned heavily on the oil industry. Speared on by the Arab oil embargo in 1973 and the Iranian Revolution of 1979, Oil executives were living the high life, pulling up to their golden clubs and restaurants, in their shiny new luxury cars, before boarding their private planes, only to be jetted off to their next location.

Organization, and the Houston Economic Development Council. Over the course of the next 2 decades, it would successfully transform our local economy, bringing economic diversification to the Houston horizon, so that it would not weigh its economic success mainly on the oil industry. By 1990, Houston had finally dug itself out of the 80’s economic slump, with the workforce numbers even surpassing those of the last golden year - 1982. Houston started to host large conventions, such as the 16th Annual Economic Summit of Industrialized Nations, held at Rice University. The event was hosted by President Bush, and ultimately, was a huge success bringing in millions of dollars to our economy, although Houston spent about $20 million preparing the city to host the global event. In 1992, Houston hosted the Republican National Convention, and by the late 1990s, a fantastic new baseball field – Minute Maid Park - was already under construction.

During the 2000s. Houston’s economy was robust and moving As the Energy Capital of the World, Houston is the headquarters and the intellectual forward at an impressive speed. It was a gray period for Houston, but, as always, Houstonians are resilient and strong, and Houston had a plan to dig the city and its citizens out of this hard time. In 1989, The Greater Houston Partnership was formed. An organization that was going to be the pivotal point for the economic turn-around that Houston so desperately needed. The GHP was formed by the merging of three Houston groups: The Houston Chamber of Commerce, the Houston World Trade

But Houstonians have never been selfish, with their compassion running high, even as they enjoy the fruits of their labor. When Hurricane Katrina hit the City of New Orleans, they were the first to welcome evacuees with open arms, offering all the support and assistance that they needed. Notwithstanding the fact that Houston and Galveston, have also, over the years, been the recipients of the deadly forces of nature, Hurricane Ike devastating Galveston in 2008, and Hurricane Harvey taking its deadly toll on both Houston, Galveston, and many surrounding counties, in 2017. One of the most important things to note is that all of this is done with a smile, and a friendly disposition, something that carves out the category for making Houston such a special place to live. Houston is also blessed to be the home of some of the finest educational institutions in the country, such as Rice University, University of St. Thomas, the University of Houston, Strake Jesuit Preparatory College, Kinkaid, and St. John's. Neighborhoods, such as West University and The Woodlands, have been named among the Best Places to Live in the US, for several years in a row. The beautiful wooded Memorial neighborhood areas of Piney Point, Bunker Hill, and Hedwig Village have always drawn in accolades as some of the most beautiful neighborhoods to live in – just as the Tanglewood neighborhood area near the Galleria has also done; and, of course, one cannot forget the majestic and always jaw-dropping neighborhood of River Oaks, where one can find the Estates of some of Houston’s most

influential families, and its acclaimed Highland Village, a historic and luxurious shopping attraction. During all of these years of a bounce-back, robust economy, Houston experienced a population surge. In 1980 Houston had an estimated population of approximately 1.6 million people. By 2021 that number has increased to just over 2.5 million. And this is not counting the surrounding counties that make the Greater Houston Metropolitan area, now rapidly stretching north to fabulous The Woodlands and Conroe, as well as west and east. With the increase in population, the infrastructure needed to be addressed through a concise study of urbanization and how to best handle the balance of the fast-growing population. Suburbs such as Sugarland – with the creation of its Master Planned Communities in the ’80s, and the expansion and development of areas such as Katy and The Woodlands, have helped to balance the influx of the increasing number of citizens. Houston has also been able to strategically and successfully plan the intricate web of interstates and freeways that interconnect all LUXCIOR.com

M

ichelle Pucket stands out as a true Houstonian, and one of the sweetest and most selfless woman in Texas. Her life permanently revolves around trying to figure out ways to help those in a less fortunate situation. Of course, she can’t do it all, and 24 hours a day are not enough to do even the things she would love to do. So she decided to focus, through her Designer Diva Resale, the largest designer-brand consignment store in Texas, to support twelve battered women and children shelters in Houston, with clothes, shoes, hygiene products, food, and basic goods. In addition to this, Michelle organized monthly garage sales selling good clothing, shoes, and coats that she receives as donations, for just $1, to help organizations filling hundreds of shipping containers of clothing, food, furniture, hygiene products, among many other things, to ship to countries such as Haiti, Philippines, Honduras, Puerto Rico, Africa, and México. She is also a big supporter of Social Motion Skills -a wonderful local organization teaching and helping young adults with autism how to reach a bright future and become independent-, with an impressive success rate. Through this particular project, Michelle touched the nerve of something very close to our hearts. In light of all of the above, we decided to dedicate this section to Michelle and the wonderful causes she supports through Designer Diva Resale. All the designs you are about to see on the following pages are from her fabulous store. The giant 60,000 sq/ft warehouse is one of Houston’s largest hidden secrets, located at 10707 Haddington Dr. Suite Warehouse, Houston, TX 77043, right off beltway 8 just half a mile north of I-10 and City Centre. A little tricky to find the first time, but once you visit

it once, get to meet Michelle, and discover thousands of designer labels, you are almost guaranteed to become a regular, either to buy or consign -most likely both, as it happens in most cases-. From evening gowns to cocktail dresses, formal wear, casual, beach, country, shoes, boots, bags, purses, accessories, jewelry, and much more, you will find something for every need or pleasure. Celebrating the Hispanic Heritage season, with the realization that since 2013 Houston became the most diverse city in the nation, and the second-largest Hispanic community, we decided to photograph two beautiful authentic Latina models, Jenny Portillo (Nicaragua) and Yoeli Flores (Venezuela), showcasing a representative selection of Michelle's Designer Diva Resale designs, as well as the luxurious jewelry of newly opened Daniel & Co., and elegant hats from Monarca Fashion Boutique. We picked a beautiful location, the recently renovated Hyatt Centric Hotel, on luxurious Market Street, in the heart of The Woodlands. By the way, we will probably have a story coming on Market Street, as this beautiful plaza is rapidly becoming the most upscale destination for shopping and dining in The Woodlands-North Houston area. Finally, we need to highlight the participation of The Woodhouse Day Spa at The Woodlands -also on Market Street, and not to be confused with other franchise locations-. The Woodlands Woodhouse Day Spa is by far the leading location, and unquestionably one of the most luxurious day spa experiences across Southeastern Texas. Enjoy! and support Michelle's wonderful cause!

inimalism

& Maximalism By Kathy Anderson, Senior Interior Design Editor Founder and owner of Eklektik Interiors Photography by John Paul Key and Chuck Williams

Everywhere you look, there are magazines, social media posts, or HGTV programs with a wealth of opinions on what the current and correct choices are in home design. With an abundance of design styles, differing opinions on the best way to live, and the availability and accessibility of resources, finding your focus and what the right answers are for you and your home can be overwhelming. Do you prefer clean lines and neutral tones or lean toward bold colors and eye-catching patterns? Or maybe both? The blending of styles, the overlap of concepts, and a comprehensive view of your lifestyle is what makes my approach to design truly eclectic. Design centered around the way you live encourages unexpected solutions and customized combinations, inspiring exceptional living. I believe that the correct design choices for you are going to be as unique as you are.

Maximalist Vs. Minimalist When your home functions for you on every level, there is no place like it. Does your current interior design reflect you and the way you want to live? Do you prefer simple lines and a monochromatic color scheme, following the minimalism trend? Or do you prefer something more bold, bright and colorful, leaning toward a maximalist approach? Maybe you aren’t even sure. Working with a good designer can help you think outside the box to discover a very personal and customized approach to home design, because honestly, most of us don’t fit inside just one design box. There is room for both minimalist and maximalist tendencies in a home, and I love the process of blending the lines between styles and finding the perfect combination for each client.

Minimalism Defined Style that is characterized by extreme spareness and simplicity. Great design can be lost with all of the ‘stuff’ we surround ourselves with. Minimalism is focusing on what is absolute in terms of need and function. It simplifies your life and your home by eliminating the unnecessary visual noise and focusing on a few great pieces. When a space is beautifully designed and curated, less can definitely be more. My favorite part of incorporating minimalism: Helping clients go through their belongings and simplifying their lives by keeping only those items that really mean something. Thoughtful curation tells a meaningful story. My favorite space for minimalist design: I prefer a minimalist approach in personal and intimate spaces. I think that is important because everyone needs a place to retreat to find solace and comfort from the hectic world that we live in.

76

This living area was the perfect location to display this client’s art and collectables in a more maximalist fashion. The custom shelving with built in lighting really brings the wall to life without it looking cluttered or too busy. In contrast, the minimalist dining area speaks volumes with one dramatic piece of art, a monochromatic color scheme, and simple clean lines.

ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

Maximalist Defined Style characterized by more of everything, which means more colors, patterns and accessories. Modern Maximalism is more about personalization than perfection. Maximalism is comfortable and livable without being messy or random. There is an art to it. It is dramatic, colorful, and outside the box, but isn’t cluttered, garish, or overly done. A lot of books, art, accessories, fabrics, and textures can be displayed with purpose and thought in a personalized style that is dramatic and fun. That is the great thing about design, rules are made to be broken but with careful consideration. There can be a fine line between fabulous and frightful. My favorite part of incorporating maximalism: Solidifying the space with rich color for a dramatic background to pop the bright colors, textures, and collectibles. Favorite space for maximalist design: Living spaces, a study, or a home bar are fun places to add color and showcase curated collections. These spaces can function for gathering and spending time with family and friends, while also telling your unique story.

Customized Combination The most important part of a designer’s job is highlighting the function of a space and aligning it with the lifestyle of each client. That is what I love about what I do, every engagement is different because every client is different. They are each unique in how they live, what makes them tick, and what brings them joy. Whether a client prefers a minimalist or maximalist approach, or a combination of both, I strive to satisfy each client’s needs so their home truly enriches their lives.

A powder bathroom (left page) is another great space to add a little flare and fun, maximalist style. The patterned wallpaper and pendant lighting are bold and vibrant, but in a neutral color palette. The wine room (this page) has plenty of color, texture and sparkle with the different finishes which are the perfect backdrop to the wine display racks.

CONVERSATION

With a Private Wealth Management Advisor While we are learning to live with this new reality of a post-Covid era, our city is experiencing a growth-rate like we have rarely seen before. Understanding that economics is the main reason for this noticeable new surge, we consulted with Felipe Castillo - an experienced professional in finances and wealth management from Regions Bank - to better understand where we are and where we are going.

HOW ARE LOCALS AND NEWCOMERS REACTING TO THE CURRENT POST-COVID19 SCENARIO IN HOUSTON AND OUR NATION? We are still learning what a post-COVID scenario will look like. For example, the rise of the Delta variant made the second half of this summer look a lot more like 2020 than, say, May or June of this year, at least in terms of daily routines, precautions, and so forth. What we still see, though, is optimism for long-term growth and economic progress. People and businesses have proven they are resilient and adaptable. The pandemic has illustrated the need to plan for the unexpected, and that speaks directly to the types of strategies and portfolios investors need to put into place.

FINANCES HOW WOULD YOU COMPARE HOUSTON/ TEXAS TO OTHER CITIES/STATES?

WHAT OPPORTUNITIES DOES REGIONS BANK OFFER INTERNATIONAL INVESTORS?

Every market has its own identity – whether it’s a place like Houston that has many people working in the energy industry, technology, or health care – compared to other markets that might be more heavily involved with federal contractors, or tourism, or other sectors.

Objective advice and the experience of working through different economic cycles are two key elements that benefit all investors, including international investors. At Regions Bank, our mission is to make life better for the people we serve, and that’s more than a mission statement – it’s a commitment our teams share because it’s how we approach our roles as financial professionals. Our attention to detail makes Regions unique in the marketplace. We serve our clients and their short and long-term goals with purpose and attention.

Houston is a great place to live, work and raise a family. We know that, and with Houston’s continued growth, we know others see it as well. Our economy is diverse and is supporting jobs in many different industries. This creates an incredible opportunity to introduce our brand and our approach to service to more people.

ARE YOU NOTICING A GROWTH IN REAL ESTATE ACTIVITY IN HOUSTON? Yes, we have seen strong demand for mortgage services, with a very active housing market, incredible demand for new and existing homes, and low rates that make refinancing an attractive option for many people. Also, some of our Private Wealth Management customers are finding value in adding real estate to their investment strategies. We recognize real estate investments aren’t right for everyone, but it is an option that some clients are finding worthwhile, especially now.

CAN YOU BRIEFLY EXPLAIN THE STRUCTURE AND ROLE OF THE REGIONS WEALTH MANAGEMENT TEAM? The key word is team. We are all experienced, and we are all driven by the goals of our clients and our fine-tuned market insights. We also collaborate across our team to deliver competitive solutions and a superior level of service. Managing wealth is about more than having an investment plan. At Regions Private Wealth Management, it’s about having a comprehensive strategy customized to specific goals and objectives. Our team in Houston is led by local professionals who understand the needs of local clients and are committed to helping them reach their unique financial goals. We take the time to listen and understand. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all. And, importantly, we deliver insights with straight talk, practical and unbiased recommendations, and complete transparency. All with one goal in mind: helping our clients plan and prepare for the future.

88

WHAT IS REGIONS BANK’S APPROACH TOWARDS THE CURRENT TREND OF INVESTORS COMING TO HOUSTON FROM OTHER STATES AND ABROAD? It’s about meeting clients where they are on their financial journey and helping them get to where they want to be. At our core, Regions is a relationship bank. We have an approach to service called ‘Regions360.’ That means teams from across the bank – wealth management, consumer banking, commercial banking, and more – work as ‘One Team, One Regions’ to provide holistic advice and guidance. This is designed to benefit clients in any number of ways, including beyond wealth management. By taking a deliberate, prescriptive approach to identifying client needs, we work with clients who are new to Houston to give them the benefit of our local experience and insights, combined with our resources as a large regional bank. Regions360 delivers shared value because we are creating value not only for clients and the company, but also for the broader community where we live and work. With many national and international companies in Houston, investors come from every corner of the globe. While many of our clients are local to Houston, we also have resources in place to serve our international clients. At Regions, it’s about taking a customized approach. We are backed by the insights, resources, and strategies of a large organization – while also offering the local experience that makes a meaningful difference for the people we serve. Houston is a very diverse market, and we have diverse teams across our business groups at Regions who are committed to knowing our customers, listening to their goals and objectives, and working with them in a customized fashion. We believe in the power of relationships, and we are continually focused on how we can deliver top-tier customer service. The strength of our teams, the competitive services we deliver, and our constant focus on

innovation all combine to make us attractive to anyone seeking to build, protect and preserve their wealth – or simply to take their initial steps toward creating a financial plan.

city in the country, I believe the result will be more jobs and more company investments in this area. That, in turn, can create a better quality of life for everyone who calls Houston home.

Special Immigrant Visa and Humanitarian Parole FOR AFGHAN TRANSLATORS AND INTERPRETERS • Must have obtained a favorable written recommendation from a General or Flag Officer in the chain of command of the U.S. Armed Forces unit, that the applicant supported as a translator or interpreter, or from the Chief of Mission from the embassy where applicant worked.

The purpose of Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) and Humanitarian Parole is to allow individuals who have assisted the United States government during a time of war, or those undergoing urgent humanitarian crises to resettle safely in the United States. There are various categories of the Special Immigrant Visa. However, considering recent international events, the most relevant visa is the Special Immigrant Visa for the Afghan translators and interpreters. The SIV program is meant to assist translators and interpreters who have worked directly with the U.S. Armed Forces or under the Chief of Mission (COM) authority at a U.S. Embassy. There are about 34,500 Special Immigrant Visas available for this fiscal year. To be eligible for Special Immigration Visa an applicant must meet all the following requirements: •

The first step toward applying for SIV status is to file a petition with USCIS. An Applicant must file: • A completed Form I-360, Petition for Amerasian, Widow(er), or Special Immigrant.

Immigration Attorney Olsa Cano

Must be a national of Afghanistan; and

• Must have worked directly with the U.S. Armed Forces or under Chief of Mission (COM) authority as a translator or interpreter for a period of at least 12 months; and

• A copy of the passport or nationality/ birth certificate showing that the applicant is a national of Afghanistan, along with a certified English translation, if the document is not in English.

• Proof of work as a translator/interpreter with the U.S. Armed Forces or under Chief of Mission (COM) authority for at least 12 months. • Proof of a background check and screening by the U.S. Armed Forces or the COM.

After USCIS approves the petition, the applicant will undergo a visa interview for himself and family (spouse and unmarried children younger than 21) at a U.S. embassy or consulate overseas. Special immigrants are eligible for the same resettlement assistance and other benefits as refugees admitted under the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. While in the United States, they are eligible for work permit and eventually green card as well.

Humanitarian Parole for Afghan nationals

a scheduled consular appointment an applicant can be issued a travel document. Conditional approval of parole and the issuance of a travel document does not guarantee final approval of the parole. A Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer will inspect the parole beneficiary’s travel documents upon arrival in the United States, and the officer has the final say in admitting an applicant in the United States. Parole is not a legal immigration status and does not in itself provide a path to legal immigration status. The parolee is however eligible to request employment authorization, apply for asylum, or have other means to change status to that of an immigrant.

Afghan nationals who are outside of the United States may request parole into the United States based on urgent humanitarian or significant public benefit reasons, for a temporary period. The applicant must file Form I-131, Application for Travel Document with the USCIS to be eligible. The form must also include a statement explaining the urgent humanitarian circumstances including any relevant evidence supporting the parole request. Further, the applicant should present available identity documentation to the U.S. embassy during consular processing or to U.S. government officials if asked to report to an airport. The applicant also needs a sponsor who agrees to provide financial support to the parolee while in the United States. The sponsor is required to include a form I-134, Affidavit of Support and supporting documentation with the parole request.

Refugee resettlement agencies are told to prepare and receive as many as 50,000 Afghans arriving on "humanitarian parole" in the coming weeks. As we all have seen the need for humanitarian aid is imminent for nationals of Afghanistan. However, the path to the United States is not going to be easy, or fast. Applicants arriving under the SIV Program or Humanitarian program will undergo thorough screening and lengthy immigration processing and bureaucracy, despite their request to expedite their applications. The good news, however, is that once in the United States these individuals are eligible to obtain work permit and potentially adjust status to that of lawful permanent residents and obtain citizenship one day. Most importantly, they will be given a chance to start a new life in this country, away from the horrors they have left behind.

USCIS may conditionally approve a parole request, and after

FROM THE PUBLISHER'S DESK

FOOD FOR YOUR GENIUS MIND: What day is TODAY? Guaranteed: this has never crossed your mind.

by Martin Gondra, publisher Many different calendars have been developed over the millenniums to help people organize their lives. According to current estimates, there are about forty calendars used in the world today, particularly for determining religious dates. Most western countries use the Gregorian calendar, named after Pope Gregory XIII, who introduced it in 1582. The Gregorian calendar replaced the Julian calendar (established by emperor Julius Caesar in 46 BC, which had been the calendar in Europe until then). Consider the variety of calendars around the world, all measuring history from a couple of thousand years to over 7,500 years. Take a look at just a few examples: Our Gregorian calendar (marking 2021 today using the birth of Christ as the starting point -although it was later proven to be 3-4 years off: today it should have been 2017-2018-), adds to the Armenian, Assyrian, Bahá'í, Alinese saka, Berber, Buddhist, Burmese, Byzantine, Chinese, Coptic, Discordian, Hindu calendars (Vikram Samvat, Shaka Samvat, Kali Yuga), Holocene, Igbo, Iranian, Islamic, Japanese, Javanese, Juche; Julian, Korean, Minguo, Nanakshahi, Thai solar, Tibetan, to name a few examples of existing calendars. It’s not surprising finding so many calendars, as a result of an even much larger number of races, languages, cultures, and religions around the world. STRIKING FACT #1 - However, the one thing that is absolutely striking, and that should blow our minds, is the fact that today, all around the globe, is the exact same day (of course understanding that due to the change in time zones while here in Texas it could be one day, in other parts of the world will be the previous or the following day by a few hours difference: Monday in Houston at 9 PM, is already Tuesday in Europe; 2 AM Monday in Texas is 10

96

PM Sunday in Hawaii). But the bottom line is that we all basically live on the same day of the week, regardless of the name of the month or the number of the year in our calendar. But stay with me, because this amazing realization doesn't end here. STRIKING FACT #2 - It is equally amazing the fact that despite so many variances and changes in calendars throughout history, the week is, all around the globe, comprised of seven days. From a commercial perspective, a 10-day week, or even a 5-day week, would be more practical and easier to manage (with months averaging 30-31 days, six 5-day weeks, or five 6-day weeks, or three 10-day weeks, would be much more precise than four 7-day weeks). Then why 7? Why not 6, 8, or 12 days in a week? In fact, why even have a week? Why not just count the 365 days of the year? Have I made you think? There is more: STRIKING FACT #3 - The factors used to caliber time and calendars around the world are all based on astronomical factors: The 24-hour "day" (actually 23.9344696) is the time our planet completes a full rotation around its axis. The “month” is the time the moon completes its orbit around the Earth. And the “year” is the time the Earth takes to complete its orbit around the sun. But what about the “week”? This critical time measurement has no astronomical basis or explanation whatsoever. So where does it come from? Who came up with such an odd number to establish a 7-day week, adopted for millenniums around the world by all races, nations, languages, and religions? The only place in the world and throughout history where you can find it is the Biblical account of the week that took this world's creation, narrated in Genesis chapters 1 and 2. and dating a little over 6,000 years ago.

For those scholars understanding the Hebrew language used by Moses 3,500 years ago to describe the events of the first week during the creation of our world, the word used to determine what happened each individual day, is the one used for a literal 24hour period, not a 1000-year period or a 1 million-year period, as some believe. In fact, when all creation was concluded on the sixth day, the seventh day appeared as a 24-hour period of rest. That was the inaugural first 7-day week for humanity. Note that at the time there were only two human beings (the Jewish did not exist until three generations after Abraham, 2,000 years after creation -approx. 2,000 BC-). STRIKING FACT #4 - It is absolutely astonishing that even with so many changes to the thousands of calendars produced by many civilizations across history, and most unknown to each other, the seven-day week was always there, and was never altered, anywhere in the world, to this day. Furthermore, some calendars recognize the seventh day as a special day that closes and seals the week. In Portuguese -among other languages and cultures- in countries like Brazil and Portugal, the days of the week are just numbers: first day (1º feira o domingo -Sunday- ), second day (2º feira -Monday-), third day (3º feira -Tuesday-)... through the sixth day (6º feira -Friday-), but then the 7th day (Saturday) is called "sábado" (same word used in Spanish and very similar words in many other languages). Isn't this absolutely amazing? Is it just a crazy random coincidence? Absolutely impossible! So, where did this phenomenon come from? How did it ever come to happen and end up like this for thousands of years? God has established millions of natural laws that cannot be broken, ever. The law of gravity, the fact that the moon circles around the Earth, the orbit of the Earth around the sun, the day and night cycle, the seasons, the laws in the animal world, in nature, in our biology, in the cycles of life, in basic emotions, are just among many laws that cannot, have not, and will never be, broken. The seven-day weekly cycle is definitely another law that, for many reasons, cannot and will not ever be disturbed, no matter how many times the effort has been made. The big question is "why"? What is so important about this apparently odd timetable law which the Creator will not allow it to be touched. Why is it there? There is only one single, and quite simple possible explanation: The way the Bible describes the creation of the world is not just real, but vividly described:

"Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day, God ended his work which he had made, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made." - Genesis 2:1-4 (King James Version) The weekly cycle was God's creation. And he sealed it on the seventh day, which he blessed, and sanctified, in a very special way. There you have it! The seventh day was especially blessed and sanctified, thus sealing the weekly cycle forever, to this day. It's a divine law, at the very root of all other laws of creation, and cannot be disturbed or changed. It is significantly important to note that Moses, the same man who received the revelation of Genesis directly from God showing him the exact way this world was created, 2,500 years after it had happened (Moses lived around 1500 BC), he also received the Ten Commandments, in which the fourth one reads: "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days, the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy." - Exodus 20:8-11 (New International Version). Having indisputably understood that the weekly cycle was established by God himself, now understand the reason for that: "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. . . For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them. . . " 1- The Bible is accurate and trustworthy. 2- We do not come from the evolution of inferior species. God wants us to acknowledge Him as our Creator God, and loving Father. We have been created resembling His image and called for a higher purpose. And every week that passes you by, every seventh day, you should "remember" and celebrate that. Are you acknowledging God in every step of your life? Are you fulfilling your high destiny? _______ Would you like to learn about more striking facts from the Bible? Just call me on my cll at 832.855.4494.

fter being locked up for well over a year, and missing the opportunity to produce our 6th show in 2020, this time around we are doubling down "with Vengeance" through TWO fabulous events:

Sunday, November 7 HIGHLAND VILLAGE

So heads up! We are coming again! Additionally, we will offer qualified drivers the opportunity to test-drive supercars from Lamborghini Houston, on the track! Apply now! Extremely limited spots available.

A fantastic display of Houston's top exotics in the heart of River Oaks. The best automobiles will be awarded under five different categories, while we will enjoy with our friends some the great food from Gauchos do Sul, Escalante's and PF Chang.

In an event like this one nothing can be left to chance. All necessary safety measures are carefully planned and taken by Emilio Aragon, our track manager, to ensure the safety of the drivers and everyone else. We are proud to claim that in 6 years, and in 2019 at MSR, we had "0" incidents to report, in and out of the track.

Sunday, November 21 - MSR Houston

WHAT ELSE TO EXPECT

A fabulous festival and display of supercars, aftermarket exhibitors, and non-automotive vendors from Houston and The Woodlands.

- Children ( and adults) will have tons of fun at the fabulous 3/4-mile circuit, with 50/ mph professional race karts. There are 15 minutes or three 15-minute blocks available.

hen your automobile is in great condition -or maybe even not so greatyou definitely need William's magic to take it back to its brand new look, and higher... much higher!

"Will" grew up with a fascination for exotic cars. From a young age, the sound of the exhaust roaring right by and the different car designs have always caught his attention, and he always wanted to be around cars, to the extent that he would even volunteer to help his parents with their vehicles. Eventually, his family members and friends would ask for his help, and through a growing reputation and word of mouth, a business started: Texas Detailing Association (Texas DA). He advanced his skills and became very proficient in the latest technology in polishing equipment, paint correction, and ceramic coatings. Usually, those services take time to master, but his natural talent allowed him to quickly become one of the most celebrated in Texas. After you, Will is your car's most beloved friend. Let me put it this way: if your car could love, you'll be jealous of William.

108

Not long after officially starting the detailing business and offering the paint correction and ceramic coating services, he began getting the attention of ultra-exclusive car owners. He rapidly started filling up his booking calendar with exotics and rare cars. He remembers the first one he worked on was a yellow Lamborghini Aventador. His clients started to invite him to car meetups, like Houston Coffee and Cars, where he meet some of his longtime clients. Today, his client base includes some of the top collectors in the state, whom he services on a regular basis at their homes or storage facilities through his mobile service.

Texas Detailing Association continues to grow, and now they provide services in different states and have even expanded into marine and aviation detailing. Their services preserve the quality of the assets, and their ultimate goal is to continuously make them look better than the day they were purchased. William counts among his clients some of the top high-end dealerships in Houston. Although it's an automotive spa, and while they work on every type of car, Texas Detailing Association is largely known for working on some of the most exclusive and iconic vehicles ever made, including the Bugatti Chiron, Ferrari LaFerrari, McLaren Speedtail, Ferrari Monza SP2, McLaren Senna, to name a few. Aside from their unique portfolio, the top thing that sets them apart is their Customer Service and tailored packages offered to fit every client’s specific needs. Because after all, exclusivity is the name of his game. Will's philosophy is simple: "If your car is important to you, it is important to him. If it looks great, he will make it look spectacular". Both Butch and Will, unquestionably LUXCIOR's "Red-diamond" winners!

MOMMY

MAKEOVER Mom's Natural Beauty Back

TT

By Marcos Ikeda, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.

he end of summer is has come and although it may seem as bad news, it is not for cosmetics. Autumn has the advantage of perfect weather conditions if you plan to undergo cosmetic surgery, as the temperatures are ideal for it. Although summer is wonderful and fun, it's no secret that the sun, when it comes to cosmetic treatments, is not your best ally. UV rays can be very unfavorable for skin healing and heat can be uncomfortable and exhausting for a recently operated patient. That is why cosmetic surgery in the fall is much more in demand than in any other season. The warm sun, the pleasant temperatures and the length of the days provide an ideal environment for a good recovery and post-surgery. To receive this long-awaited time of year wearing that dream body, we recommend you perform the acclaimed Mommy Makeover or Brazilian Mommy Makeover, a term that could be translated as the makeover of the mother. Anyone can do it, but especially those who during their pregnancy suffered changes in their figure and took a toll on their body, such as: the breasts increased in size to prepare for breastfeeding and now they are more sagging; the uterus expanded, and the abdomen was left with flaccid skin, lost elasticity and gained fat. Thus, the purpose of the Mommy Makeover is to regain the shape and smoothness of the breasts, and eliminate excess fat, especially in the thighs and the abdomen.

120

Now, what is the difference between Mommy Makeover and "Brazilian" Mommy Makeover? Well, each one adapts to your specific needs and is made for each particular body. The Mommy Makeover includes breast augmentation and lift with implants of your choice, either Saline or Silicone, Liposuction 360 and marking, ending with the Tummy Tuck. The Brazilian Mommy Makeover includes Tummy Tuck, Liposuction 360 and transfer of that annoying fat that we be extracted from the abdomen, back and sides towards the buttocks, providing a rounder, aesthetic Brazilian finish. It is important to mention that all these procedures are performed in a single surgery and the patient will be able to return home the very same day. Some patients fear the incision after the Tummy Tuck, when in reality it's really a scar that will remain under your Brazilian bikini, it will be invisible and you will be able to wear the outfits or bikinis that you want without showing the incision. Fall will help the healing of patients to be much more effective at the time of year when the weather forces us to sweat and maintain a more humid incision with slow healing. This time will then be perfect to show off the curves and prepare for the end of the year celebrations. But well, like all mothers, naturally, she worries about how a surgical procedure will affect her family, particularly her ability to care for her little ones after the procedure. The recovery process is a little different for each patient. In general, she will need help, at home, for 2 to 3 days after surgery (longer if she has had a tummy tuck). Most patients can begin some of their daily activities (such as driving, doing light housework, a desk job, or grocery shopping) within 2 to 3 weeks. You may need help with heavy lifting or difficult childcare issues for the first 4 to 6 weeks. After this time, with the approval of your surgeon, you will be able to raise your children again.

BEAUTY & WELLNESS

HEALTHY

HYDRATION How are you coping with the heat and humidity as end this summer? Are you staying indoors with air conditioning or venturing outside to enjoy nature and the urban jungle?

Today I have hydration on my mind...bodily hydration to be specific. When you think of your body composition, what do you think of? Your bones, muscles, tendons, skin, hair...all of these make up parts of our bodies; but did you know that an adult human body is made of up to 60% water? I’m amazed when I think that most of my body is made up of something so seemingly simple and commonplace like water. How do we hydrate this 60% body of water? General recommendations are to drink eight 8-oz cups of water per day, or 64 oz of water a day. Think of this as a guideline as some individuals may need more water, and others less water. If you are exercising or working outdoors, you will likely need more water, more often than if you are sitting indoors at your desk. How do you hydrate your body? Are you a water drinker? Or maybe you prefer something flavored like juice, tea, sports drinks, soda, or coffee. If you’re not much of a water drinker, you may be getting more than what you bargained for -- in the form of sugar. Most beverages -- unless they are sugar free -- have added sugars. Let’s compare some of these (comparison based on a 12 oz serving): TOTAL TOTAL SUGAR BEVERAGE CALORIES IN TEASPOONS Water 0 0 Tea (unsweetened) 0 0 Sports Drinks 97 5teaspoons Cafe Mocha 290 5 teaspoons Chai Tea Latte 180 5 ½ teaspoons Sweetened Tea 115 7 teaspoons Regular Soda 156 9 teaspoons Lemonade 171 10 teaspoons Fruit Drinks 238 14 teaspoons

124

Keity Hodgson Ayerdis, MPH, RD

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that no more than 10% of calories come from added sugars. If you are on a 2000 calorie diet, this would be 200 calories, or 12 teaspoons of added sugar per day. When taken into perspective, drinking a 12-oz regular lemonade would be more than 80% of the recommended daily allowance! To stay within the recommendations, try switching to sugar free beverages or hydrate with water alone. If you find it difficult to drink water only, try infusing some flavor into your water with fruits, herbs, edible flowers, and even vegetables! I recommend adding slices of cucumber or mint leaves for a refreshing infused water. If you like fruity flavors, add slices of orange, lemon, or strawberries for that slight fruity flavor! One of my new favorite ways to infuse my water is to add jasmine flowers (jasmine is very common in my area) to water and keep it nice and cold in the fridge. It imparts a sweet floral flavor to the water which makes it more special than drinking plain water from the tap or from a bottle. I would like to encourage you to try some of these infused water ideas and let me know how you like it! If you are used to drinking beverages with added sugar, try to cut it down in half and have sugar-free beverages or water instead. Try to be consistent with this change and with time, your taste buds will grow to enjoy the simple hydration that water gives without the added sugar. God bless, stay cool, stay hydrated!

ABOUT HOUSTON BOTANIC GARDEN Formed in 2002, Houston Botanic Garden is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to enrich lives through discovery, education, and the conservation of plants and the natural environment. The Garden broke ground in 2019 on a 132-acre site located less than ten minutes South of downtown Houston on I-45.

The first of several planned phases over the next 30 years opened in fall 2020 as a major addition to Houston’s cultural landscape and growing list of greenspaces. The Garden provides a place for visitors to learn about plants, conservation, and nature; connects Houstonians across different cultures and ethnicities; and closes an existing gap in the world-class city’s collection of amenities for residents and tourists.
