olls-Royce, the world’s leading luxury brand, has defined the future of luxury mobility. The Grand Arrival of the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 boldly points to a bright future for their marque where their patrons’ individual demands for complete and authentic personalisation will be met through an exquisite fusion of technology, design and hallmark Rolls-Royce craftsmanship.”

In a spectacular event at London’s Roundhouse, the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 was presented. The car defines the future of luxury mobility. Codenamed 103EX, it is the marque’s first ever pure ‘Vision Vehicle’.

The Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 presents an intriguing and aesthetically dynamic vision of the future of luxury mobility – a completely personal, effortless and autonomous Rolls-Royce experience, wrapped in a design that ensures a ‘Grand Sanctuary’ for its occupants, and a ‘Grand Arrival’.

The Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 anticipates the mobility demands of the luxury customer of the future. Brought to life by Rolls-Royce after many months of study and consultation with current patrons of the brand, the car represents their clearly expressed desire for an assurance that the marque’s plans for the future of luxury personal mobility will continue to embody the key attributes that have made Rolls-Royce the preferred marque of the most discerning and powerful patrons in the world for over a Century.

With the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100, the brand provides just such an assurance to its valued customers – present and future. It makes a bold and definitive statement of confidence in a future where Rolls-Royce rejects the notion of anonymous, utilitarian and bland future modes of mobility. Through an intimate understanding of its customers’ thinking and their demands in

44

the future, Rolls-Royce presents an exciting and highly appealing vision of effortless, autonomous, spacious and beautiful luxury mobility, as personal as each individual customer.

Background

This ‘Vision Vehicle’ is one of four announced by the BMW Group in Munich on 7 March 2016, as it launched its centenary celebrations – THE NEXT 100 YEARS. In addition to being the centenary of the BMW Group, 2016 also represents a seminal moment in the history of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. For Rolls-Royce, the end of production of the seventh generation Phantom – considered by aficionados to be "the best car in the world" – represents the completion of the first phase of the Rolls-Royce brand’s renaissance under BMW Group custodianship. The success of Phantom, Ghost, Wraith and now Dawn serves as the foundation for a bold new chapter. This highly successful era for the world’s most celebrated luxury brand has been driven by a restless commitment to always looking forward. In this spirit, the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 is presented – a truly revolutionary, highly authentic exploration of the future of luxury mobility. It provides a fully authentic look into the potential demands and desires of the wealthy connoisseur of the future. In creating the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100, the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars design team, led by Director of Design Giles Taylor, asked themselves the question, “How can we recast luxury for the next 100 years?” Within that question the team found that they had to address two further questions:

For the 105 years since her creation in 1911, the Spirit of Ecstasy, modelled by sculptor and artist Charles Sykes, on Eleanor Thornton, has silently guided every RollsRoyce and its owner through the momentous events of their lives. She has stood as an elegant presence at some of history’s most notable events. Today, the ‘Voice of Eleanor’ inhabits the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100, delivering the dream of an effortless future to her owners.

45

“What will a Rolls-Royce owner expect of his or her Rolls-Royce in the coming decades?” and “How do we at Rolls-Royce today envision how we meet those expectations?”. These questions allowed the team to dream of the staggering possibilities for Rolls-Royce’s future.

Cars design team, led by Director of Design Giles Taylor. Their deep understanding of the Rolls-Royce customer of the future and the world in which they will live led them to conceive of a motor car that would serve and augment its patron’s lifestyle in every way.

Rolls-Royce intimately understands its patrons and their likely desires and motivations in the future. It understands that true luxury is deeply personal and that the hallmarks of every Rolls-Royce past and present are key to its future. The designers therefore distilled four key tenets that not only underpin the elegant solution that is the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100, but epitomise the future of luxury mobility as a whole:

“The Rolls-Royce patron will continue to be a famous figure in the future,” explains Taylor. I envision that the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 will play a key role in these people’s lives, guiding and conveying them effortlessly through their life’s journey in an exquisite sanctuary where they can reflect in peace ahead of arriving in the grandest style.”

In presenting the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100, the marque has rejected the common notion that the future of personal transport is a utilitarian and functional one. Rolls-Royce has stepped bravely into the future to propose a no-compromise, fully autonomous, coachbuilt, personalised vision to those customers who wish for an emotional attachment to their car. This reasoning led them to the first key tenet: The Personal Vision.

The Personal Vision The Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100, as presented in London in June, is but one example of a number of possible personal visions of a Rolls-Royce of the future. Indeed, in an evolution of the Rolls-Royce Bespoke experience of today, the customers’ taste will influence the exact design of his or her RollsRoyce and how it will be configured. In the spirit of the great coachbuilt cars of the past, Rolls-Royce will create the chassis of the future, hand-built from the most advanced materials and powered by a zero emissions powertrain. Advanced manufacturing technologies will enable customers to involve themselves even more in the design of the shape, size and silhouette of their personal Rolls-Royce vision. The future customer will commission his or her own concept. Rolls‑Royce will design and manufacture this personal vision of each customer and make every RollsRoyce a unique Bespoke masterpiece. In short, the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 utilises envisioned advances in technology to herald the return to authentic coachbuilding. The Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 is the vision of the Rolls-Royce Motor

46

The Effortless Journey, the Grand Sanctuary and the Grand Arrival. The next three tenets and hallmarks of the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100.

The Effortless Journey For the 105 years since her creation in 1911, the Spirit of Ecstasy, modelled by sculptor and artist Charles Sykes, on Eleanor Thornton, has silently guided every Rolls-Royce and its owner through the momentous events of their lives. She has stood as an elegant presence at some of history’s most notable events. Today, the ‘Voice of Eleanor’ inhabits the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100, delivering the dream of an effortless future to her owners. Digitally connected to every aspect of her owners’ lives and her surrounding environment, ‘Eleanor’ becomes their virtual assistant and chauffeur, freeing them of all effort and encumbrance. Imbued with her own artificial intelligence, she works intuitively to advise her owners on itineraries, schedules and options before they leave their residence, reminding about appointments and tasks and making suggestions to ease any anticipated impediments. She ‘brings’ the car around when her passengers are ready to travel and, whilst conveying her charges to their next destination, helpfully but discreetly makes suggestions and recommendations, briefing them ahead of their arrival so they are ready to ‘perform’. And ever vigilant, ‘Eleanor’ safely delivers her passengers to their destination, having already predicted the situation and surroundings that await them. This Effortless Journey is enhanced by the hallmark Rolls-Royce ‘magic carpet ride’ delivered through a blend of a futuristic, powerful, zero-emission

LIFESTYLE

drivetrain and advanced suspension that sees the vehicle almost skim across the road surface. As a V12 combustion engine is most unlikely to exist in the future, one can only surmise how this Rolls-Royce will be powered. A hint may appear in the Grand Sanctuary that is the interior of the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100.

The Grand Sanctuary “Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.” - Coco Chanel Already prepared by ‘Eleanor’ for the next journey in their event-filled lives, our owners are met by the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 which awaits their departure. Entering the Grand Sanctuary, our passengers step in unbowed, with consummate grace and dignity, as with the state carriages of old, taking their place on the best seat in the house. Cocooned in the futuristic but handcrafted lounge atmosphere, the coach door and clamshell canopy glide closed to envelop them in uninterrupted silence and luxury. As one would expect from a Rolls-Royce, the environment of the Grand Sanctuary is crafted from the most precious and contemporary of materials. What is unexpected is the feeling of lightness and simplicity, an effortless elegance. True to this spirit, the cabin is encircled by the most modern handcrafted fine-line Macassar wood panelling, sweeping across the interior from the coach door, continuing around behind the generous OLED screen and up beside the second passenger to the side of the sofa. This ensures a continuous, beautifully clean and sculptural surface when the screen is extinguished. The centrepiece of the cabin is the beautiful sofa. The best seat in the house, it is an exquisite, futuristic interpretation of modern furniture design. Clothed in the most opulent fabrics, it gives the impression of floating within the cocoon of the cabin thanks to the artful use of lighting and modern materials. Inspired by the early regal Rolls-Royces, but also by the ground-breaking work executed on the 2015 Phantom Serenity, the designers used the symbol of ultimate elegance – silk – to clothe the sofa. This most natural and sensual of materials is combined with wool to create a beautifully textured, ivory-coloured luxurious throne upon which our passengers are conveyed, and from which they command.

A final sensual touchpoint within the cabin is the finest one-off deep-pile ivory wool carpet woven especially in London, which our passengers can enjoy as they luxuriate in the ample space created by the removal of the chauffeur. This sense of space is accentuated as our passengers’ view from their seats is uninterrupted by a cockpit or steering wheel which are now superfluous. From their powerful position within the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100, “All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players…”. Should they choose to drop their eyes from that world stage for a moment and ask ‘Eleanor’ for visual cues, she will provide them on the transparent OLED screen that dominates the front wall of the cabin. Here our passengers can view information regarding their journey, their destination and the people they are expecting to meet. Or they may simply choose to retreat from the outside world and be entertained by their favourite show for a while. Or they may just contemplate the finely crafted analogue clock that hovers in a central position above the screen, which serves both as a reminder of Sir Henry Royce’s humble beginnings as an electrical pioneer making electric dynamos, and of time as the ultimate luxury. “Rolls-Royce design today is the epitome of elegance,” Taylor comments, “and this elegance is achieved through simplicity of design under which lies the technology that makes our patrons experience effortless.”

The Grand Arrival Certain truths are constant over time. One of these truths is how the powerful have always understood the symbols through which they express their standing. From the lavish chariots of the Roman Emperors to the individually hand built state carriages and cars of Monarchy – such as the coachbuilt Rolls-Royce Phantom IV used during Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation – such fine vehicles have been designed to project the importance of the individual inside to those waiting outside. Waiting with bated breath for a grand arrival, the crowds were never anything but impressed by the stately arrival of their idol. In the future, Rolls-Royce believes that its powerful patrons will wish to continue projecting their power and status in such a manner.

This truth is reflected in the most dramatic aspect of the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 – its iconic, imposing and futuristic presence which ensures a Grand Arrival for its occupants. Yet whilst it powerfully expresses the future of luxury, it remains constant to the iconic tropes of any true Rolls-Royce: The Spirit of Ecstasy, the Pantheon grille, the long bonnet and the iconic proportions of the entire vehicle.

This dividing line accentuates the car’s two-tone design scheme. The upper section is entirely comprised of dark glass. It flows fluidly as a daring fastback, creating a glass canopy over the occupants that provides privacy whilst allowing them to contemplate the majesty of the stars in the firmament above as they glide through the night; a window on the world ahead before resolving itself into the bonnet of the car.

The very size of the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 announces the importance of its precious cargo. At 5.9 meters long and 1.6 metres high, it mirrors the perfect dimensions of today’s Phantom Extended Wheelbase, whilst the ever constant Spirit of Ecstasy grows in stature, harking back to the regal Phantoms of the 1920s. Hand-crafted by the finest European glassmakers of today, she lights the way to the future of luxury. She is poised atop the re-imagined, yet still iconic, Pantheon grille with the red Double-R badge of an experimental Rolls-Royce.

The lower section is more dramatic in its design and in what it achieves. Draped in a silk-like ‘Crystal Water’ colour scheme, its surfacing achieves a lightness that belies the vehicle’s size. This is automotive ‘Haute Couture’. From whatever angle the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 is viewed, it seems to float, whether at rest or in motion.

From these timeless icons of Rolls-Royce design flow the graceful, sweeping lines and expressive surfaces that combine to create a completely futuristic vision of a possible Rolls-Royce exterior. The polished metal of the grille flows up over the nose, around the base of the Spirit of Ecstasy and along the top of the suspended laser-headlight hoops, before narrowing to shoot down the side of the vehicle’s long bonnet, as a dividing line between upper and lower sections of the car. Not stopping at the extremes of the bonnet, this beautiful metal feature creates a beautiful ‘horseshoe’ as it flows along the top edge of the coach door, describes a parabola up and over the pronounced rear shoulder, encircling the rear of the glass canopy and back down the other flank.

50

This lightness is achieved through the paring back of this vehicle to the essence of a Rolls-Royce by the Design team, who were freed from their current constraints by the new propulsion and coach-build technologies now available to them. So, for example, where an engine would once have occupied the entire under-bonnet area of the car, a luggage compartment is positioned just aft of the front wheels. In conceiving this bold vision of the future of luxury, the designers remain steadfast in their commitment to imbuing every element of the Rolls-Royce experience with effortlessness. The luggage compartment therefore opens automatically following arrival and disembarkation, presenting two Grand Tourer cases. In the case of the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100, the cases are fittingly personalised to CS Rolls and FH Royce. The newly liberated Pantheon grille is now the unencumbered prow of

LIFESTYLE

the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100. It is the front of a fully enclosed and smooth-bottomed hull that echoes the form language of 1920’s Rolls-Royces, with its ‘boat-tail’, and within which the entire accommodation area is located. Constructed from light yet incredibly strong materials, the hull ‘floats’ above the road surface as it is suspended from the vehicle’s wheels via exposed arms and struts. The 28-inch tall but narrow wheels upon which the car glides are each handbuilt from 65 individual pieces of aluminium, and enclosed to deliver the impression of a futuristic catamaran. Seen from the side, the coachwork delivers hallmark Rolls-Royce privacy to the occupants as it rises gracefully like a fine cloak over the shoulders at the rear of the car. However, this fine drapery flatters to deceive as this rear shoulder line also imparts an air of powerful but graceful forward motion, accentuated by the rising beltline that thrusts upwards in a manner reminiscent of the great pre-war Rolls-Royces. Whilst this radical new design language also contributes to an effortless, unruffled journey thanks to improved air flow and reduced air resistance, its unquestioned drama delivers a grand arrival.

The Grand Arrival of the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 is first signalled by the Spirit of Ecstasy and Pantheon grille illuminating to cast an ethereal, otherworldly glow from the front of the car. As this vision of the future gracefully sweeps up to its destination, the ethereal glow spreads from the trailing edge of the front wheel arch to the rear of the single coach door, signalling that something momentous is about to happen. As the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 gracefully comes to a halt, something magnificent occurs. Hinged on the left of the vehicle, the glass canopy lifts to allow the occupant to stand whilst providing shelter from above and behind. Then, in one effortless movement, the single coach door sweeps open and a step emerges from below the running board. As a final flourish, a red light is projected, carpet-like, from the underside of the step as a welcome. Thus, as in Botticelli’s ‘The Birth of Venus’, our guest is framed and ready to step gracefully into the limelight and greet their audience. “The Grand Arrival gesture of the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 creates a stage for our important passengers as they arrive at their ultimate destination,” comments Taylor. “It is an expression of our intrinsic understanding of the possibilities for a true luxury brand and the desires of its customers.” _______

Rolls-Royce and the art of the Grand Arrival

Enjoy the future... today

In the era of the stately carriage, and even of the early coachbuilt limousine, one was guaranteed an arrival befitting one’s stature. As we have seen, the exterior design and adornment of such conveyances announced one’s importance, as did the luxurious appointment of the interior.

Rolls-Royce of Houston

However, one other aspect of such vehicles contributed to their suitability for such occasions: their elevated position, suspended as they were on large wheels. Combined with the high ceiling typical of carriage or limousine, one could normally stand before stepping out in a graceful and dignified manner. Modern aerodynamic considerations meant that even modern limousines’ rooflines had to be lowered, thereby reducing headroom and requiring one to stoop slightly when alighting from one’s vehicle. Unwilling to accept such stricture and compromise in the future, Giles Taylor and his team set to work to reinstate the Grand Arrival as it should be.

FOR DECADES PLASTIC SURGERY HAS BEEN A PRIVILEGE TO BE ENJOYED MOSTLY BY WOMEN. AS MEN, WE CAN APPRECIATE THAT, ALTHOUGH WE HAVE DEFINITELY BEEN LEFT BEHIND. HOWEVER, THERE IS A COSMETIC SURGEON THAT IS TURNING THE TABLES.

Dr. Sukkar grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and went to Louisiana State University College of Medicine, in New Orleans, graduating in 1992. He fortunately came across plastic surgery during his residency, and immediately became drawn to this field, as he had a special talent for art since he was a child. Like most plastic surgeons, he started this new stage of his career performing the well-known standard liposuction. Over time, he moved into more sophisticated areas of this coveted art. His reputation started to grow rapidly alongside his expertise and "gifted eye", laying out a platform to catapult him to a much higher level yet.

56

In 2008, he became aware of a new body sculpting technique that he had never heard of before, a technique he knew had the potential to shake the plastic surgery world. After doing a fair deal of research, Dr. Sukkar decided to learn the techniques from the creator of the procedure himself, traveling around the world to study this complicated specialty. The knowledge and ability resulting from his training, combined with his intuitive sense of art, produced a disciple that became just as good -if not better- than the master himself. Lucky for us, Dr. Sukkar practices right here in Houston, in Clear Lake. He has agreed to share with us some of his treasured secrets, this time focusing exclusively on men.

Sam M. Sukkar, M.D., F.A.C.S. Board Certified American Board of Plastic Surgery

FOR MEN ONLY

UNDERSTANDING ABS' SCULPTING Liposuction is typically seen as removing fat from the body. When fat is taken out, the patient looks smaller, but shows no definition. The truth of the matter is that the human body is not flat. Understanding this, Dr. Sukkar applies the concept of creating -to put it in simple terms- a series of “mountains” and “valleys”. Wherever you have a muscle is usually where the "mountain" goes, and between muscles you have the "valley". In other words, you leave fat in strategic areas on top and around the muscles, and remove it from the spaces in between, thus resulting in a highly noticeable contrast between the muscles and the depressions in between the muscles. The best part is that the human fat is fixed, so there is no risk for the fat left in certain areas to melt around and spread, filling the voids where fat has been removed. You may compare it to gelatin, in the sense that fat is soft and flexible, yet hard enough to stay in place.

Dr. Sukkar excels in re-shaping literally every area of the body, not just the abs. Arms are another example. He has the ability to remove, and if necessary transfer, fat from around the muscles, and sculpt the arms to a shape as the one patient’s have had in their best years of workout. The concept is not creating a fake muscle, but rather unveiling and enhancing the muscle you already have. The same is true for the chest. He will remove fat from the lower chest and inject it in the upper chest to bulk it up. Of course, not everybody has the same muscle and body structure, so these procedures must be customized to each individual's conditions. There are basically four key components to shape: the muscle, the bone structure, the fat and the skin. Ideally, you need to have a relatively good bony muscle structure to build on, although you can inject fat to augment it where it is deficient.

Imagine at 55 going back to your thirties. This is a man's dream come true, right here in Houston! This is one of many Dr. Sukkar's actual patient, before and after.

Another great aspect of these procedures is that there is actually no age limitation. What makes the final result even more impressive and amazingly natural, is the time Dr. Sukkar spends with his patients after the procedure. Most plastic surgeons will do their job, and may check on you once again a few weeks after the procedure, while Dr. Sukkar will start the very next day with a series of massage sessions, in order to keep on shaping the contouring process and the tightening of the skin. The recuperation time is almost negligible and nearly painless. It is possible you would only feel a slight discomfort, as you would feel after a heavy workout.

58

While this procedure may not be for everyone, anyone who values quality work will agree, this is the Rolls-Royce of liposuction every man wants to have.

WHAT ABOUT HER? With the female body it's the same principle. Dr. Sukkar artistically removes specific amounts of fat from targeted, well-defined areas, leaving some of the fat in strategic areas, thus developing the desired high definition contour. But, we will leave that for another issue…!

The two fastest cars in the world ARE

PURE TEXAN Everything is bigger AND BETTER in Texas, and when it comes to performance cars, you can safely say we are WAY BETTER, even than Bugatti.

The world’s fastest convertible is officially from Texas. On March 25, 2016 the Hennessey Venom GT Spyder has set a new world record for open-top sports cars at Naval Air Station Lemoore where Racelogic, the renowned independent speed testing firm, has officially confirmed that a top speed of 265.6 mph was achieved. The record run was certified by Racelogic technical director, Jim Lau, and witnessed by Commander Darren Fouts, Air Operations Officer. The Venom GT roadster was driven by Brian Smith, director of the Ford Performance Racing School. Following the spectacular record-breaking speed of the Hennessey Venom GT in 2014, during which the hardtop coupe achieved a top speed of 270.4 mph (435.3 km/h) at the Kennedy Space Center, a record speed that remains unparalleled to this day, Hennessey has added yet another milestone. The open top version, the Venom GT Spyder, now also officially holds the world record. The open-top super sports car reached a maximum speed of 265.6 mph (427.4 km/h) at the US Navy’s 2.9 mile long runway in Lemoore, California, making it the fastest convertible sports car in the world – beating the previous record held by the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport Vitesse by over 11 mph. “2016 marks the 25th anniversary of Hennessey Performance”, said company founder, John Hennessey. “I thought that this would be a special way to celebrate 25 years of making fast cars faster. I’ve wanted to test the top speed of our Venom GT Spyder, without the roof, ever since our coupe ran 270.4 mph on the Space Shuttle landing runway at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in 2014. This was a great way to validate the technical excellence of our car which includes high-speed stability with an open roof.”

62

by Gino Frediani

The Venom GT is powered by a twin-turbo 7.0L V8 engine producing 1,451 bhp @ 7,200 rpm and 1,287 lb-ft of torque @ 4,200 rpm and puts its power down to the rear Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires via a 6-speed manual gearbox by Ricardo. The Venom GT is capable of 0-60 mph in less than 2.4 seconds and has been tested from 0-200 mph in less than 13 seconds. Hennessey plans to offer a limited run of 3 “World Record Edition” Venom GT Spyder’s to commemorate the record run and as a tribute to the company’s 25th Anniversary. The cost is $1.3 million each plus tax. “We are grateful to have the help of so many friends, family, employees, customers and partners over the past 25 years. We look forward to the next chapter of the Venom with the F5 as we keep making fast cars faster for the next 25 years”, said John Hennessey. Hennessey is headquartered in Sealy, Texas – about 45 minutes west of Houston. The main 36,000 sq. ft. facility is situated on 143 acres, complete with showroom, 24 bay workshop, fabrication shop, 2 chassis dyno’s and the latest in high-tech automotive equipment. The company also owns and operates Lonestar Motorsports Park – a 1/4 mile dragstrip located on the grounds. The track and series of private roads are used extensively to test and tune their vehicles as well as to give clients demonstration rides in a safe environment. You should make it a point to pay them a visit and meet the legend.

BOTOX

Don't Delay: Begin Annual Mammograms

40

at Age By Daisha Hayden, M.D. It is a fact that breast cancer incidence increases substantially around age 40 and the incidence rate for ages 40-44 is twice that for ages 35-39. One in six breast cancers occur in women ages 40-49. The message is simple: since regular mammography screening began in the U.S. in the 1980s, the breast cancer death rate has plummeted 35 percent. Yet with so much contradicting information about when to screen and how often, it has become perplexing for women to grasp the gist of annual screening mammography. The experts agree to set a schedule of regular, yearly mammograms beginning at age 40. That opinion is shared by the Society of Breast Imaging, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American College of Radiology because screening mammography saves lives. Numerous studies show that even when women have access to the latest therapies, deaths from breast cancer decline at a much higher rate in women who get mammograms. Annual screening mammography starting at age 40 reduces breast cancer mortality by 30 percent through early detection, saving approximately 6,500 more women’s lives each year in the U.S. than screening every other year starting at age 50.

A mammogram is a safe, low-dose x-ray that can detect irregularities in the breast, sometimes even before a lump can be felt. Women can increase the chance for early detection of breast cancer by adhering to a few simple guidelines of good breast health. Always perform a breast self-exam every month and have a clinical breast exam conducted by a healthcare professional annually. If warning signs are found, such as pain, feeling a lump, or nipple discharge, see a doctor immediately. Talk to a doctor about ways to reduce risk of breast cancer. Current science cannot determine which cancers will advance and which will not, so all women 40 and older should be screened annually. There is no reason not to get screened, so I urge all women 40+ to continue this annual tradition. Be proactive with your health. Visit StJosephMammo.com or call 713-7577416 to schedule a mammogram. _______ Dr. Hayden is a board-certified radiologist at St. Joseph Medical Center.

WOMEN'S LUNCHEON SERVES UP "PINK POWER" In an effort to further promote breast cancer awareness, St. Joseph Medical Center will host a Pink Power Expo & Luncheon on Friday, October 7 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. The program kicks off with a health expo in the first hour which showcases community organizations geared toward health and wellness. Mehta, M.D., board-certified radiation oncologist. Bruce Smith, M.D., board-certified plastic surgeon will serve as moderator. The luncheon will be held in the: George W. POWER BOWL

P

By Carolina Gondra

Before, when you thought about healthy food, salad was the first thing that popped out in your mind. However, this concept was never entirely true. A salad can have a large number of calories just in the dressing. Today, healthy is summarized in power bowls: bowls filled with vegetables, whole grains, protein and healthy fats. It is impossible not to be inspired by all the Instagram photos. Pictures of food in a bowl have reached your eyes more than once and the power bowls displaced completely the granola in mason jars, green juices, and even smoothies. This trend has even opened new restaurants in New York and released new books. Creating a power bowl is like a feast of flavor and texture that we long to taste. Eating healthy has never been so fun and delicious. You can make your own with a little extra time and dedication. A power bowl manages to nourish your body automatically, because when you create or order your food in bowls, you strive to choose fresh and nutritious food. The ingredients that stand out the most are the superfoods. Foods like quinoa, spinach, kale, lentils, seeds, avocado, chicken, salmon or eggs are some of the ingredients that you can use. The key to a power bowl is the principle of a macrobiotic diet, which excludes all kinds of processed food in order to live a healthy and longer life. When it comes to creating your own power bowl there are no rules. Use your favorite ingredients and try to get 15% of lean protein, 25% of whole grains, 25% of vegetables, 10% of sauce or dressing and 25% of extras such as nuts, seeds and sprouts. Have fun, and enjoy it!

57 COMPLICATIONS

By David Bredan

Reference 57260

Vacheron Constantin World's Most Complicated Watch Ever Made In celebrations of its 260 years of uninterrupted history, Vacheron Constantin revealed the Vacheron Constantin Reference 57260 pocket watch, breaking the world's record as the most complicated watch ever made. Ordered by one of the top collectors in the world and as the result of eight years of research, development, prototyping, manufacturing and assembly, all performed at Vacheron Constantin's Atelier Cabinotiers workshop, this unique piece was conceived to be the most complex mechanical timepiece ever created – taking the title from another pocket watch, the Patek Philippe Caliber 89 pocket watch with its 33 complications and 1,728 components.

CHRONOMETRIC FEATURES AND COMPLICATIONS:

This record-breaking mechanical jewel has a total of 57 complications, some of which are unique, including multiple calendars and a double retrograde split-second chronograph.

Perpetual Gregorian Calendar; ISO 8601 Financial "Business" Calendar with number of the day and week indication; indications for the day of the week, date, weeks, months, leap years; retrograde date; Hebraic Perpetual Calendar with date, name of the day and month, number of months (12 or 13) in the

102

Hours, minutes, seconds; armillary sphere tourbillon; triple-axis tourbillon; World Time Indication with separate 12 hours and minutes, day, and daynight display; balance wheel with variable inertia and spherical hairspring; triple-column-wheel split-second "rattrapante" chronograph with 60-minute and 12-hour totalizers;

ASTRONOMIC COMPLICATIONS:

JEWELS

Hebraic year; secular calendar, century, decade and year; golden number indication with 19-year cycle; sky chart showing the constellations visible in the night sky from the owner's city; indications for seasons, equinoxes, solstices, signs of the Zodiac; sidereal time measuring 23 hours, 56 minutes and 41 seconds per day; sunset and sunrise indications; length of day and length of night; phases of the Moon that needs to be adjusted by 1 day every 1,027 years;

CHIMING COMPLICATIONS: Petite Sonnerie; Grande Sonnerie; Minute Repeater; Westminster chime for the sonnerie and repeater with 5 gongs and 5 hammers, playing the same tune as London’s Big Ben. The Vacheron Constantin Reference 57260 can chime the time on demand, or "en passant," i.e., as it passes;

Striking barrel disengaging system to prevent damage to the barrel when fully wound; silence, chiming, and night time modes for the sonnerie, the latter making the sonnerie silent between 10PM and 8AM. Alarm with power-reserve and strike-silence indications and with two different tones that can be chosen when setting the alarm: Westminster chime or single-strike alarm. The crown function indicator window, displaying the position of the crown: R = rewinding; C = sky chart & alarm correction; M = time-setting. Measuring 98mm in diameter, 131.7 mm tall and 50.55 mm thick, what is perhaps just as impressive as this seemingly endless number of features and complications squeezed in there, is the fact that the craftsmen at Vacheron Constantin's Atelier Cabinotiers have not only created the most complicated watch, but also packed it with some completely new functions and features. 103

Just when you thought hardly anything new that's called a tourbillon could possibly be conceived, the Vacheron Constantin Reference 57260 comes out with what they have titled the "Armillary sphere tourbillon." Sure, exceptional chronometry is important, as most all other complications inside the Vacheron Constantin Reference 57260 feed off of the actual time – the astronomical and chiming indications and all the rest require accurate time to be kept for them to make sense to even exist in the first place. The reason for its weird name is that the tourbillon mechanism is visually reminiscent of the armillary sphere, a scientific instrument comprising interlocking spheres. The armillary tourbillon is a triple-axis tourbillon whose innermost cage rotates at a very fast, 15-second pace, revealing the company's Maltese cross logo every so often. Installed on the balance wheel is a spherical hairspring, a rare sight even today – one that we have only seen a few times before, including inside the Jaeger-LeCoultre Gyrotourbillon 3. Given the challenges involved in creating such a highly specific component, it arguably would have made sense for Vacheron to work with Jaeger-LeCoultre (another brand under the Richemont umbrella) or the supplier they used, but Vacheron Constantin reached out and said that they have not collaborated on it in any way. The triple axes of rotation, the especially quick inner cage, and the spherical hairspring all make for a unique combination – even if the tourbillon otherwise could very well be the least surprising among all the features inside the Vacheron Constantin Reference 57260. As the tourbillon, all wrapped in aluminum cages, is doing its job, time is displayed on a regulator-style display, meaning that the hours are displayed on the sub-dial at 12, and the hours, by a large, centrally mounted, blued hand. This regulator display works as well as it first did when it was originally used on regulator clocks in watch factories, where the easy and accurate legibility of the minutes enjoyed priority as watchmakers were setting their watches to a reference time – in the case of the Vacheron Constantin Reference 57260, though, the reason why this layout was truly necessary is to have only one hand (the minute hand) blocking the view on the countless sub-dials and charts. Chronometric performance dealt with, we should move onto the astronomical complications – some of the most fascinating and mind-boggling, and thanks to the numerous beautifully laid out charts and scales and exquisitely crafted golden hands, this time around, they are visually attractive as

104

well. What truly renders such astronomical indications so dizzying is the fact that they all feed off of the time, as kept by the escapement and indicated by the hour and minute hands. As those hands rotate countless times throughout the weeks and months, they slowly drive hugely complicated sets of wheels and pinions, all painstakingly calculated to offer unique indications on more common features like the exact day and date, all the way to much more exotic ones like the way the constellations show up in the night sky or as the apparent and the mean solar time deviate. When Vacheron Constantin announced that they had been working on creating the most complicated watch in the world, we all knew it was going to be a watch with two dials – for such a sheer number (expected to be well over 30) of complications, one dial would simply not suffice to house all the different indications, scales, and hands – and the movement needs to be more balanced out as well, of course. As such, the astronomical indications are scattered around both dials, and the most important one around which most others are constructed is the perpetual calendar. Spiced up with retrograde hands here and there, it will indicate everything you could possibly want to know when someone asks "What day is it?" For starters, the Vacheron Constantin Reference 57260 will tell you the exact day of the week, the date, week, and whether or not you are in a leap year (or indeed, how soon the next one is). The list goes on, though, as on the periphery of one of its back dials, it has indications for the months (with their respective lengths in days indicated), the Zodiac, as well as the season (hopefully, you'll be familiar with the latter on your own). Last but not least, it will tell you just how much the actual and the mean (i.e., as we measure it) time deviates. All this information is indicated on a number of scales and sub-dials, and some are even displayed numerous times – for example, you can read the date in the Gregorian perpetual calendar either on the retrograde display at the 12 o'clock sub-dial on the tourbillon side of the watch, or on the scale on the periphery of the same dial, with a large hand pointing to the actual date, month, Zodiac, and season. And just when you thought this was all you could possibly want indicated, as a totally new complication, the Vacheron Constantin Reference 57260 offers an ISO 8601 Business Calendar that complies with the requirements of the Inter-

JEWELS national Organization for Standardization regarding the way of telling time for business (or rather, financial) purposes. We have already discussed the indications of the Gregorian perpetual calendar (day, date, etc.), so now, let's see how this is new and different. The ISO 8601 business calendar divides the year into weeks, with the first week of January being week one and so on. As you'd expect to see from something developed for the financial world, it's all about the numbers: the number of the week and the number of the day take precedence over the month and date indications. As you can see in the image above, the number of the week is read from the outer scale, the month from the inner concentric circle, and the number of the day is indicated by a number in a window directly above the week dial, where 1 stands for Monday and 7 for Sunday. Just about as novel and perhaps even more rare, the Vacheron Constantin Reference 57260 also prominently features a Hebraic calendar on its main dial. It is no secret that the Hebrew calendar is a very complicated one, and the fact that the 57260 features both it, a Gregorian calendar and also the ISO 8601 financial calendar version just goes to show how much potential there was left in the astronomic indications – and, in fact, this is where this amazing new watch manages to surge past its previous competitors the most, These two additional calendar displays mean a large number of extra complications, because all the displays for the years, months, days, names of the days and months and so on, all add to that total of 57 complications inside the Vacheron Constantin Reference 57260. Chiming functions are an absolute must-have to any grand complication timepiece, and the Vacheron Constantine Reference 57260 packs not simply the best, but basically all of them. Minute repeater, grande and petite sonnerie, chiming alarm – you name it, it's in there. In the image above, you will see a large number of the parts of the chiming mechanisms revealed – while it is a shame that all of this magnificent engineering will remain hidden under the dial, this metropolis of beautifully crafted cams, snails, and wheels all work together in an effort to help the different chiming functions operate. The grande and petite sonnerie has been regarded as the most difficult to produce horological complication by a number of famed watchmakers, and there is good reason for that. The grande and petite sonnerie chime the time "en passant," i.e., as it passes, with the grande sonnerie chiming the hours and quarters every 15 minutes, while the petite sonnerie chimes the quarters as every quarter

is passed – but the hours only at the start of a new hour. To add to its complexity, one would of course want to be able to turn this function off, and so the sonnerie comes with a mode selector, where you can turn the sonnerie off entirely – so that it won't ring at the wrong time. Plus, the Vacheron Constantin Reference 57260 has added a night mode to the sonnerie (something we don't remember seeing anywhere else before), which silences the sonnerie between 10PM and 8AM. Needless to say, a watch that is capable of chiming the time on its own is able to do so on demand, and so the Vacheron Constantin Reference 57260 also has a minute repeater, that chimes the elapsed hours, quarter hours, and minutes anytime the owner initiates the complication. Topping off the list of chiming functions is the alarm, for which the desired time can be set on the main dial's 12-hour sub-dial. The alarm can be turned on or off – obviously – and as a neat extra complication, it can be told to use the full Westminster chimes with all five hammers and gongs (for a really fancy wake-up call), or work in normal mode, where it strikes just one single gong that was tuned specifically for this purpose and is not used for the other chiming functions.

Material: White gold Diameter: 98 mm Thickness: 50.55 mm Caliber 3750 Weight: 957 grams (2.1 lbs.) Number of components: 2,826 Number of jewels: 242 Frequency: 2.5Hz / 18,000 vibrations per hour Power Reserve: 60 hours Hands: 31 hands Number of complications: 57

Price: $10 million

Well over two thousand words into this article, and we have still not discussed every single function of the Vacheron Constantin Reference 57260 at a length and in a detail it would arguably deserve – in fact, just the way the three calendars have been merged into one movement would deserve a dedicated article, and so would the night-mode of the sonnerie, the amazing triple-axis tourbillon... and so on and on. But at the end of the day, the point is that high-end watchmaking, haute horlogerie, is not dead, but on the contrary: it manages to keep upping the bar, and keep up the pace with all the other, much younger and rapidly developing industries. At a time when some thought just about everything that could be done with watch movements has been done, when all complications have been invented, Vacheron Constantin delivered a unique timepiece that presented us with a number of new and interesting complications – along with some others that we have already known, but even those have a twist or two in store for us. We genuinely hope to see such novel engineering achievements not every eight years but more often – even (or rather: especially!) if that would mean seeing them not cramped into one unattainable piece, but many more which are part of a renowned brand's main collections.

400 Sundancer

GULF OF MEXICO'S Sea Ray

By Alfredo PeĂąalosa

The new 400 Sundancer from Sea Ray represents everything Texan Latinos are all about: comfort, social and elegance. This beauty of the Gulf of Mexico offers a good-sized entertainment platform with an open floor plan that keeps the social areas well connected to one another. This is accomplished thanks to the single-level main deck that allows all the social areas to join together as one. "Elegance" at its best European style is the first word that comes to mind when viewing Sea Ray’s design and choice of rich materials, from stylish hardwoods and finishes to solid surface counter tops. The Sea Ray 400 Sundancer is equally comfortable for a night on the town, a formal dinner, or a summer picnic with friends.

This knight of the waters is boarded from the swim platform and stairs to port lead to the first of our entertainment gathering areas, the open cockpit. It can also be boarded from a fixed pier by stepping onto the caprail at the port side of the cockpit, and then again by steps that lead to the cockpit. L-shaped seating that wraps around a pedestal table to starboard opposes a single seat to port. Two carry-on coolers are stored in exposed positions under the seats, allowing them to be slid out without having to remove cushions. Protection is offered from an optional overhead SureShade extendable awning. Triple-wide opening glass doors with a flush threshold, allows the salon to blend seamlessly with the outdoor cockpit. We’d like to see a screen as standard for the door to keep the bugs out, but it is offered as an option.

LIFESTYLE

The extended hardtop provides ample protection, but for those days when more is needed, an optional SureShade awning extends electrically from the aft section of the overhead. Just behind the cockpit, the swim platform is actually an entertainment venue in its own right. It extends 5’10” (1.78 m) from the transom. An optional outdoor galley can be located against the transom and allows for cooking in open air, rather than having to be concerned with maintaining ventilation of the salon. Underneath are a pair of storage drawers on stainless steel sliders. Choose from an extended platform that can be covered in teak or a hydraulic platform. The optional hydraulic platform has a 500 lb. (226.8 kg) capacity and includes innovative steps that self-deploy as the platform is lowered. It can be actuated with either a corded remote or wireless. With the 3’8” (1.12 m) platform lowered, there’s still enough space in the 2’2” (.66 m) molded section of the platform to allow for staying dry. Food can then be handed down to the “private beach”. An optional audio system includes a transom remote. The comfort level extends fully forward to the bow where a standard multi-position sun pad offers sun worshipers a place to relax. Side rails, fabricated from 316 stainless steel, allow the area to be safely used, even when the 400 Sundancer is underway. An optional audio system includes speakers mounted to the side rails, bringing the entertainment outdoors and a simple Bluetooth music player allows for complete control of the tunes. Salon Sea Ray 400 Sundancer salon - Sea Ray refers to its salon as the “Sunroom” and we can see why. Cabinets can be in a choice of Chestnut (shown), Prestige Cherry or Pecan Woodline Matte, and both compliment the wood decking. A combination of large windows and an opening sunroof work together with the large aft doors to blue the line between the inside and the outside. Aside from the massive amount of natural light, fresh air is equally welcome on all but the hottest days where climate control takes precedence. On those days, the upper deck is zone controlled by a 27,000 BTU reverse-cycle system for heat and air conditioning. Honeycomb blinds are standard for the massive side windows and a privacy curtain is fitted for the aft door, allowing both privacy and conversion to a sleeping area for those extra overnight guests. All flooring is hardwood. A standard TV includes a Blu-ray player, a gaming system to port, DVD storage and the yacht is pre-wired for coax. A surround sound system can be installed and will include a DVD player, amplifier and component speakers. An L-shaped lounge to starboard and an opposing second sofa to port will accommodate eight. And an option for a pull-out bed is available. A wine chiller, a staple of any entertaining yacht, will keep the whites and blushes at a perfect temperature. Having the galley on the main deck solves a multitude of problems, especially from an entertainment standpoint. It’s now not necessary to continually traipse up and down stairs to serve hors d'oeuvres to guests. This galley is at once luxurious and functional. Only high-end appliances are used and abundant storage is available throughout. Hardwoods for the cabinetry are matching those throughout the boat, as are the solid surface counters. An acrylic “backsplash” separates the galley from the adjacent sofa and it’s etched with a Sea Ray “swoosh” matching the curvature of the salon windows. Lower Deck Sea Ray created a two-stateroom layout, both full-beam, but added an option of selecting either one head or two ($15,000 Vacuflush is included with the second head). The second head comes at the expense of losing some of the open space in the forward master stateroom.

Amenities

Sea Ray 400 Sundancer vanity

Both staterooms come with a compliment of pillows, Allante Fabric, curtains for the hull side windows, 12V stereo with Bluetooth connectivity, in-deck storage, central vac and Chestnut wood cabinetry as standard. Flooring is carpeted throughout. Bedding with comforters, sheets and pillows are supplied as standard. A 16,000 BTU reverse cycle air-handling system provides cooling or heating as desired.

A pull-out vanity drawer will be a welcome feature for getting ready for a night out at the waterfront restaurant.

Master Stateroom The master stateroom is located forward and a queen island berth highlights the berth area. Expansive windows run the length of the stateroom to both sides and an overhead hatch is directly over the head of the berth, allowing the owners to fall asleep to a view of the sky. The master includes so much closet space that Sea Ray can take up some of it, along with the available open space to add a second head, making this stateroom en suite. Even with this option, there’s plenty of storage space left, and (Note, the cabinetry with the stool and pull-out vanity drawer is part of the standard configuration and goes away when the second head is ordered) the remaining cabinetry even includes a stool in front of a pull-out vanity drawer that will be much appreciated by the lady of the house. Add a safe in the master for added security when having a lot of parties (Note the safe is located in the aft stateroom locker). A flatscreen TV is included as standard.

Guest Stateroom The guest stateroom sleeps two in separate berths that will slide together for those times when couples, rather than siblings, are utilizing the space. A third person can be accommodated by utilizing the settee as a berth. If more storage is needed, swap out the settee with a storage cabinet ($3,333). Performance We tested the Sea Ray 400 Sundancer with a pair of Cummins QSB 480s turning 23x26.5 pitch, 4-blade Acme propellers. With an empty weight of 12,935 lbs. (5,867 kg), 37% fuel and three people onboard, we estimated our test weight at 14,660 lbs. (6,650 kg). Top speed was 31.9 kts reached at 3325 rpm. That speed produced a fuel burn of 50.1 gph allowing the 400 Sundancer to keep going for 183.2 nm. Best economy was achieved at 2750 rpm and 25.3 kts. At that speed, the fuel burn dropped to 35.4 gph and the range opened up to 205.5 nm. Come try it at

Home Automation Ideas FOR YOUR LIFESTYLE Are you looking for some home automation ideas to finally start making your life easier in 2017? Close your eyes and imagine for just one moment, coming home worry free after a stressful day at work. Imagine approaching your front door and using your cell phone or thumb to automatically unlock the door. As you step into the hallway your lights come on automatically. In winter your home is toasty warm because you programmed your wi-fi thermostat to have the heating come on half an hour before you arrived. In summer, your air-con unit was programmed to cool the house down. You get the idea. This isn’t the future – this is now. Welcome to the age of home automation. The typical smart home automation system features integrated security systems and electronic appliances which can be controlled from a single device. The lure of home automation over the years has stemmed from the convenience it offers and the time it saves on simple tasks. If you’re just getting started with home automation or aren’t interested in spending thousands of dollars to enjoy the luxury of a fully automated home, then here are a few simple home automation ideas that you can do yourself (with a little help)

114

Lighting The concept of smart lighting offers a type of ambiance control both inside and outside your home. It is one of the easiest projects to tackle since it mainly includes replacing your traditional lighting control with an app-based smart lighting control and switching out your old light bulbs with wireless LED bulbs You can also look into installing wireless dimmers, keypads, smart switches etc. Of course the luxury model includes a fully integrated smart home design which incorporated smart lighting.

Home Surveillance and Security Cameras If you spend a lot of time on the road or just away from home in general, you may want to look into a home monitoring system (if you haven’t done so yet). In the simplest of cases, adding door and window sensors can be as simple as A, B, C (and of course reading a manual). That system can easily alert you (wherever you are) through push alerts, text messages and phone calls in the event that a door is unexpectedly open a window breaks or any suspicious activity takes place.

A home monitoring system is also good for parents who constantly worry about their children. It’s a good way to keep track of their activities including when they get home from school, if they’ve done their homework, if they’ve spent the entire day playing video games and (for the older children) if they sneak out.

Entertainment and Mood Setting

Integrating Home Appliances At the beginning of this article, we mentioned how convenient a home automation system can be. Imagine being notified when guests arrive at your door by simply broadcasting a chime through the audio zone’s speakers so you can hear it clearer from anywhere in the house. Because let’s be honest, while the usual doorbell does its job, if you’re having a party or just playing loud music, the buzzer could be pressed incessantly for 10 minutes and you may not hear it.

If you’re a music lover or someone who finds their productivity levels boosted by the sound of music, you can look into streaming music throughout your home using a dedicated keypad place and distributed audio zones which can be accessed with smart phones or smart devices. Do you like showering to music to drown out or compliment your own bath music? Consider installing a touch screen behind a waterproof wall mount and enjoy some tunes while scrubbing away the dirt and grime.

Running out of ice too often? Set up your tablet to connect to your fridge to monitor ice production. Constantly losing the TV remote at the worst possible times? Look into installing a remote finder that connects to the remote and supplies some kind of signal to its location. Set up your tablet or smart device to your smart TV so it automatically turns on at a specified time or when you are in a specified place.

Regular home entertainment systems often come with some form of integration. While the more luxury systems are easily integrated with a professional home automation system, several DIY systems are designed specifically for home theater gear and can usually integrate with your TV, A/V receiver and Blu-ray player.

Home automation in many cases can be easy to do and in most cases can be done by yourself. Just remember that any major installations or conversions you’re planning to do, you may need some kind of help to do it. If necessary, look into hiring a professional to help you to make sure any changes you’re making do not negatively affect your home appliances.
