HOUSTON LATINO POWERHOUSE

As a 45-year immigrant from Argentina, I have lived in America most of my life, so I am quite familiar with both sides of the conversation, as an American, and as a native Hispanic immigrant. I love Houston, I love Texas, and I love my country. But I can’t alienate the fact that I’m also a proud Argentinian-born Latino (especially after seeing what Messi just did... lol). [By the way, take a read at my remarks about the upcoming World Cup 2026].

During the past few years, we have seen a growing number of Latin Americans migrate to the US and many other countries, mainly from Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Honduras. Meanwhile, immigration from all other countries in Central and South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe, hasn’t stopped, although this trend could change anytime given the right conditions, as it has always been the case.

As far as the recent waves go, totalitarian socialist governments, followed by their obviously failing economies, and lack of security, are at the top of the reasons why people in Latin America are forced to leave their countries, almost as a matter of survival. Similar reasons are triggering this situation in many other parts of the

world. Needless to say, the war in Ukraine is playing a big role around the world, as it contributes to global instability.

As Venezuelans are one of the largest groups coming into Texas and Houston right now, let me share what I told my youngest brother who lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as he pointed out to the fact that they are experiencing the same challenges in immigration we face here: “Take this migration of Venezuelans as a gain for Buenos Aires and for Argentina. Venezuelan people are -in their vast majorityeducated, intelligent, many holding professional degrees, hard-working, creative, talented, polite, holding strong family values, respectful, and very friendly. And to top it all, they are beautiful (keep in mind that Venezuela holds the second place right after the US with seven Miss Universe titles won). They like to grow, and here in Houston they undergo great sacrifices to quickly learn the language”. And this is true for most immigrants from all other Hispanic countries. The vast majority of these are decent people, eager to work and contribute through their education and talents.

WHY HOUSTON

Many things make Houston a great city to live in. But out of them all, I think the one most valuable trait of our city is its people, its diversity. I treasure the experience of dining in a restaurant and getting to hear people around me speak all kinds of languages. Many times I have no idea where they are from or what they are talking about, but I enjoy it because that’s what makes Houston such a fabulous international destination and the perfect representation of what America is all about. This understanding is what drives me to go out of my way to make sure LUXCIOR massively caters to all groups because Houston is about all ethnic groups, not just one or two.

After centuries of New York’s dominance as the most diverse city in America, exactly 10 years ago (and I keep on repeating this so people actually get it) Houston went up to take over first place, and New York remains at #2 since then. This is remarkable! Although unrelated to the topic, it is also worth noting that less than a month ago Texas was big news again, when it became the only state, with California, to reach a population of 30 million. We are growing! Houston is growing! This is a historic transition for our city. What an exciting time to be in Houston!

Having dedicated many issues and countless pages of this magazine to a variety of cultures heavily present in Houston, this time around I’m delighted to dedicate this issue to Latinos, which make up about 48% of the Greater Houston population. You can say I’m biased, and well, what the heck, can you please indulge me this one time around? Yes, I am!

Today the greatest nation in the world, it all started with the legitimate owners of the land, the Wampanoag people, and other native American groups. Some 400 years ago, with the first pilgrims arriving from England in 1620, we started a neverending cycle of waves of immigrants coming to the country. And after that immigration just kept on growing. With the influence of Mexicans and Peruvians during the California gold rush, Hispanic culture in the United States is diverse and full of 400 years of history.

Much of the history of immigration in the United States has its origin in the repercussions of the country’s territorial expansion. However, one of the most important periods of immigration from Latin America to the United States took place in 1848; the border between Mexico and the United States was formally established after the end of the war between the two countries.

Texas, currently the second state with the largest Hispanic population after California, was part of Mexico between 1821 and 1836. The original inhabitants of Spain, known as Texans, were about 4,000. During the 1820s, the number of settlers and immigrants from the United States to Texas increased to 30,000; by 1830, the new settlers exceeded the number of Texans six to one.

After declaring its independence from the Republic of Mexico in 1836, Texas (known at the time as the Republic of Texas) requested to be annexed to the United States, a decision supported by the majority of the Texas population. The request was rejected and it was not until 1843 that President John Tyler made the decision to continue with the annexation of Texas on his last day as president by signing the annexation bill in March 1845. Nine months later, his successor, President James K. Polk officially accepted Texas as the 28th state of the Union. Texas formally became part of the United States in February 1846, which granted U.S. citizenship to Mexican inhabitants in the territory.

In 1950, less than 4 million residents in the United States were from Spanish-speaking countries. Today, that number is nearing 70 million. People of Hispanic origin are now the largest minority community in the United States.

Hispanic populations vary considerably in large metropolitan areas. In Los Angeles and Houston, more than two-thirds of Hispanics are of Mexican origin, which reflects their general participation in the Hispanic population throughout the country.

According to the most recent statistics, there are well over 65 Million Latinos living in the United States. This is not counting Hispanic not registered with the Census Bureau. This is equivalent to nearly 20% of the total population of the country. This percentage has been growing for years and is expected to continue to do so. In this sense, it is estimated that before 2050 the Hispanic population will reach 30% of the total population of the country.

In Texas, 39% of people are Hispanic. The largest Latino communities in this region are located in Houston, El Paso, San Antonio, and Dallas.

In the following pages we decided to showcase a few of the most prominent Hispanics that have made an impact in our city’s lifestyle, under their respective industries. Many other names should have been included in representation of other relevant areas, but we feel the ones we have chosen are a perfect representation of who we are as Latinos in the United States, and what we are contributing to the growth and greatness of Houston, Texas, this wonderful nation, and the World.

Carlos Castroparedes is a world-renowned architect and designer, who has been creating innovative spaces for over 30 years.

Born in Mexico City, Carlos moved to the United States in the early ’90s and based himself in Houston, Texas, where he began working on a diverse assortment of projects with a variety of wellknown groups in the hospitality sector, such as W Hotels/Starwood - Marriott, Intercontinental Hotels, Holiday Inn, Hilton Hotels, Camino Real Hotels, CIFRA, Grupo Toks, Grupo MeshicoSaks, Brinker International, Astrea Resorts, Grupo GMP – as well as cultivating completely new concepts in the educational sector – such as the world-renowned Mandala International Academy – located in the Zona Esmeralda, which is about an hour outside of Mexico City –.

Carlos’ international experience ranges from the United States, Mexico, Latin America, Spain, Switzerland, Paris, and Dubai – to name a few. He has been the creative genius behind over 1,200 restaurants during his career, and the reinventor of creative spaces in a number of hotel projects.

THE WOODLANDS’ TOP JEWELRY DESIGNER

orn in the United States but raised in Venezuela, one of his grandfathers was Dutch, where his name Van der Dys comes from.

Richard started his career in the Jewelry Industry over 35 years ago in New York City, as part of the H. Stern family, literally growing in every facet of the business, from the retail side as a salesperson, repair department in jewelry and watches, customer service, buyer for the company, Manager, and Store Director. Then moved to Donoho’s Jewelers in The Woodlands.

DR. german Newall ALL ABOUT superior BEAUTY

Doctor German Newall is a very well-known and highly respected plastic surgeon not only in Houston, but in Texas, the nation, and around the world.

Born and raised in Lima, Perú, at an early age he discovered his passion for the practice of medicine. He traveled to the United States as a young man to pursue his dream of becoming a physician. After graduating from Georgetown Medical School, he received his general surgery training in Cleveland, Ohio, then completed his plastic surgery training in Houston, Texas. It was then that Dr. Newall decided to make Houston his permanent home.

He has been happily married since 1988 and is the father of three wonderful children. When not performing surgery or visiting his patients, he enjoys precious time with his family, especially his two grandchildren. He also loves swimming, playing tennis, and riding his beautiful selection of “Peruvian Paso” horses.

The art of plastic surgery has been his profession, but more importantly, it continues to be his absolute passion. German loves what he does, and it gives him a great deal of satisfaction to know that he can have helped thousands of women and men achieve their appearance goals. Life is a beautiful journey, and he travels it with these basic tenets: “Work hard and be honest, cherish your loved ones, and have lots of innocent fun”. Dr. Newall is part of the elite team of cosmetic and plastic surgeons at ACPS. In an exclusive interview with Dr. Newal about him, Houston, and plastic surgery, we learned some interesting facts. Dr. Thomas Cronin was the originator of silicon implants, making Houston the birthplace of breast implants in the 1960s, which created an international frenzy. Dr. Newall was trained with Ernest Cronin, Thomas Biggs, and Benjamin Cohen, so he was part of the pioneering group in this field.

In the late ’60s through the ’80s breast implants were the great thing. In fact, the ‘80s was the decade where we saw the most notorious increase in very large breast implants. This trend started shifting and in the 2000s women began looking for smaller breasts, but larger butts and more curves.

The diversity in Houston calls for different interests in cosmetic surgery depending on the nationalities. Latinos are very interested in plastic and cosmetic surgery, especially of the body. Butt augmentation has been a big boom for 8 to 9 years now, especially using your own body’s fat. Liposuction continues to be highly active as well. It’s also interesting to notice that men are growing their interest in cosmetic surgery.

Keeping in mind that Houston is home to the world’s largest medical center, it comes as no surprise that our city, with New York, and Los Angeles, is on the top three destinations for plastic surgery in the country.

We are grateful to Dr. Newall for enhancing the beauty, self-confidence, and happiness of so many Houstonians through his talent and expertise. He definitely makes it to the list of the most notorious Hispanic personalities in Houston.

RRoberto Contreras is the President and CEO of St. Christopher Holdings and DC Partners, which he founded in 2009. Prior to St. Christopher and DC Partners, Mr. Contreras founded and was President and CEO of Cosentino North America. The combination of his diverse business experiences provides him with strong ties in the United States, Mexico, and Europe.

In 2017, Contreras was awarded the “Arrival Award” by the University of Houston Law Center recognizing outstanding immigrant achievement. He has received national and international recognition for his business accomplishments, including Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2002; Time Magazine’s award to Cosentino product Silestone as one of the Visions of Tomorrow in 2004; and in 2005 Cosentino was recognized by Inc. 500 as one of the 500 fastest-growing private companies in the United States.

DC Partners developments Marlowe and Arabella were both finalists for the Houston Business Journal Awards in 2019, with Arabella winning Most Outstanding Multi-Family Development. Jatziri Barron

THE ARTISTIC MAGIC OF HISPANIC CULTURE

atziri Barron is a Mexican visual artist and muralist living and working in Houston since 2013, dedicated full-time to her art. She advocates through her art the beauty of cultural identity and is interested in creating bonds for connecting people no matter their race, religion, culture, or background by creating awareness of different humanitarian topics. As she comments on her latest work, “We are an extension of nature, magnifiers of our culture and identity, our skin tells stories about our ancestors, we are our colors, we are our roots, and we are proud”.

Jatziri studied at the Glassell School of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and has done work for institutions like the Witte Museum of San Antonio, Houston Food Bank, many private companies and clients in the U.S. and Mexico, and exhibited in places such as the Kinder Morgan Building in Houston, The Mexican Consulate Houston, Silver Street Studios, The Historic Texaco Building, and The Ion Houston, to name a few.

She currently works out of her studio at Silver Street in the Heights, Houston.

Rodolfo Sancio

THE COMPETITIVE WORLD OF ENGINEERING

Rodolfo Sancio was born 50 years ago in Caracas, Venezuela. His father migrated out of Italy after World War II, making Rodolfo the immigrant Son of an immigrant. Rodolfo’s parents were geologists and instilled in him a deep appreciation for education, Hard work, and dedication, as well as a commitment to always giving his best.

When Rodolfo was only 2, his father decided to uproot the family of six from Venezuela to pursue a Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering in Berkeley, California. Thus, Rodolfo’s first spoken language was English.

Five years later, the family returned to Venezuela where Rodolfo completed his elementary, middle, and high school at Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola. Rodolfo studied civil engineering at the Universidad Catolica Andres Bello (UCAB) in Caracas, Venezuela. He graduated in 1995 and lost no time getting to work. He initially took a one-year job in construction before his ailing father asked him to help with his geotechnical consulting practice. With never an idle moment, Rodolfo also started teaching descriptive geometry at UCAB while also helping a friend oversee construction. He soon realized that the everincreasing technical responsibilities of geotechnical consulting required him to go back to school.

In 1998, Rodolfo applied to graduate studies. He planned to return to Venezuela where he would develop his own consulting practice. He completed a master’s and a Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering at the University of California at Berkeley in 2003, but as the political and economic situation in Venezuela worsened under the leadership of so-called socialists, Rodolfo decided that he had to look for an opportunity to stay in the United States.

Soon thereafter, he received an out-of-the-blue call from Ken Been of Golder Associates who invited him to an interview in Houston. Though he had previously considered this option, he was curious about what Houston had to offer. Also, his sister had settled in Katy one year earlier, and he was keen to be close to family once again. In late 2003, he drove from Berkeley to Houston in a 1994 Toyota Camry stuffed with his belongings. He remained committed to the principles instilled by his parents, which he knew would allow him to be successful as an immigrant in this country.

In Houston, Rodolfo met his wife, Mariana, who is also Venezuelan. Soon after, they got married and started a family. Santiago is now 16 and Bruno is 13. In 2009, after 6 years at Golder, Rodolfo was offered the opportunity to start a geotechnical practice for Geosyntec Consultants in Houston. It was risky to leave the comfort of his job, but he accepted the challenge. He printed business cards describing himself as the geotechnical group leader, though this group only included himself.

Through hard work and dedication, Rodolfo ascended through the ranks of Geosyntec and built a multiethnic group of over 30 professionals managing onshore and offshore geohazards for the oil and gas and offshore wind industries. The group includes three other hard-working and high-performing Venezuelans, who have also brought with them and applied the virtues of hard work and tenacity that are typical of Hispanics seeking better opportunities in the United States.

lvaro is a Colombian-Venezuelan national, married to Rhomy, a wonderful violinist, and with Whom he shares two children, 13-year-old Román, also a double-bass, and 7-year-old Avril, also a violinist.

Álvaro José Carrillo Hernández GRAMMY AWARDEE MUSICIAN A

Alvaro graduated in music and double bass player. He is a specialist in the direction, management, production, and cultural administration of artistic and social projects.

As part of his extensive career, he was elected in November 2018 as District Councilor for Cultural Infrastructure representing the seat of Producers of the Mayor’s Office of Bogotá, and the District Secretariat for Recreation, Culture, and Sports for the period of 2019-2022.

He was also awarded the 2019 Latin Grammy Award in the category “Best Classical Album of the Year” with “Regreso”, recorded with the Nueva Orquesta Filarmóníca (New Philarmonic Orchestra).

In 2021 he was chosen as one of the 50 most influential Venezuelans by the magazine “Illustrious Venezolanos and Grupo Editorial 786”.

He has played in important halls and festivals worldwide, such as Berliner Philharmoniker (Germany), the Royal Concert Gebouw (Holland), the Wiener Musikverein (Austria), the Royal Festival Hall (England), Beethoven Fest (Germany), the Carnegie Hall (USA), the Salzburg Festival (Austria) and the Lucerne Festival (Switzerland) with the Teresa Carreño Symphony Orchestra (Venezuela) and Nueva Filarmonía (Colombia).

Ruby Pinedo-Fear

Ruby Pinedo-Fear, (Ruby Fear: Visual Artist) is dentist by profession and has always been an artist at heart. She has had the privilege to have lived in eleven countries around the world which has enriched her as a person and as an artist. She has now established herself in Houston where she moved to a year ago. She’s a full time artist at her studio at Silver Street Studios (201) Houston.

Her training in art started in her beautiful native country Colombia and has spread across England, Russia, Trinidad, the USA, Canada, France, Denmark, Sweden, and Portugal. She is a global citizen!

As a perennial student, she has tailored her art education by studying firsthand with different artists and masters. She has studied and worked in interior design, decorative painting (faux finishes, trompe l’oeil, furniture painting and restoration, mural painting), metal embossing, and portraiture, a Renaissance technique the old masters like Da Vinci and Rembrandt et al. used, called mixed media, sculpture, oil, acrylic, encaustics, drawing, etc.

Her art has developed and changed over time from representational/realistic to a more abstract concept that focuses not just on the reference picture but looks beyond the subject matter. Ruby is greatly inspired by her faith and many of her paintings portray that. A constant in her art is to illustrate hope, joy, peace, gratitude, love, and creative wonder, no matter the subject. Ruby hopes her paintings transform the atmosphere of the spaces in which they are placed not only visually but also spiritually. Art is a spiritual expression and has more power than we may think.

Ruby’s main medium at the moment is mixed media which includes acrylics, oils, cold wax, collage, recycled material, and sometimes found objects.

One of her projects in the near future is geared toward using art expression as a healing mechanism to bring love, hope, joy, peace, comfort, and gratitude.

She has had solo and group exhibitions in Colombia, Canada, and Denmark and has just completed The Escapist Residency Program at John Ross Palmer in Houston, which culminated with her first art show at The Chrysalis Gallery at The Heights Houston, where she showed her most recent series ‘Ruby Red’.

Ruby’s art strives to make a difference in people’s lives also in a practical way, by gifting the joy of painting and color to less privileged children by providing painting and drawing supplies, and also by sponsoring school education.

Ruby’s paintings are found in private and corporate collections in different countries.

Hugo Ortega

MEXICAN CULINARY TALENT TAKES OVER HOUSTON

Hugo Ortega is executive chef and co-owner of several of Houston’s finest restaurants – Backstreet Cafe, Hugo’s, Caracol, Xochi, and URBE, and winner of Best Chef: Southwest at the prestigious 2017 James Beard Foundation Awards. He was a finalist for the award for six consecutive years, from 2012 - 2017. Ortega has been recognized locally, nationally, and globally for his inspirational story and his passion for sharing traditional Mexican cooking and culture.

Ortega’s American Dream story started at Backstreet Cafe, a neighborhood bistro started by Tracy Vaught in 1983. He began his career in the restaurant business first as a dishwasher and busboy and later as a line cook before graduating from culinary school and later becoming Backstreet’s executive chef. He and Vaught married, and together, they have created an award-winning Houston restaurant family – H Town Restaurant Group – that also includes Hugo’s, Caracol, Xochi, and URBE.

Ortega was born in Mexico City, the oldest of a family of eight children. At 15, he began working at one of several Procter & Gamble factories in Mexico to help support his family. In 1984, he immigrated to Houston with no contacts or job leads but was determined to make a life for himself in America. Slowly, step by step, Ortega began to set down roots in the bustling oil capital of the world.

He was happy to find his first job, as a dishwasher, at a popular bar and nightclub. While the pay was meager, Ortega grabbed the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of the restaurant business and find contacts to help him improve his English.

Later, Ortega cleaned the floors in office buildings to supplement his income. With an unexpected turn of bad luck, his roommates moved to California and he lost both of his jobs. He had no income and no place to live. A friend asked Hugo if he wanted to wash dishes and Hugo jumped at the chance. The friend took Hugo to Backstreet Cafe, and this is where the turning point of his life happened.

Ortega worked hard and showed an interest in working in the kitchen. In Mexico, he learned cooking from his mother and grandmother. Ortega was given a position on the line in the Backstreet kitchen, and he continued to advance from there. Impressed by his hard work and dedication, Vaught offered to enroll Ortega in the Culinary Arts program at Houston Community College.

He graduated from HCC’s Culinary Arts program in November 1992 and assumed the role of chef at Backstreet Cafe, then an executive chef in 1995.

Ortega is passionate about sharing the traditional foods and culture of his native Mexico with diners. In 2002, he opened the critically acclaimed Hugo’s, which brought Authentic Regional Mexican Cuisine to the forefront of dining. In 2013, Ortega and Vaught opened their third concept, Caracol, a Mexican coastal kitchen highlighting the richness of seafood found along Mexico’s 16 coastal states; and in January 2017 they opened Xochi, which celebrates the flavors of Oaxaca in Southern Mexico, in the new Marriot Marquis Houston Downtown. In 2021, they opened their most recent concept, URBE, celebrating the iconic street foods of Mexico.

Ortega has made three guest chef appearances at the prestigious James Beard House in New York City, and was named “Up-and-Coming Chef of the Year” in 1999 and Chef of the Year in 2012 and 2002 at the Houston Culinary Awards; among other accolades. His restaurants have been named “Top Table” by Bon Appetit; Best Restaurants in America by Eater; one of Houston’s Four Top Latin Restaurants by Forbes Travel Guide; included in “What Makes Houston’s the Next Great American City?” in Smithsonian Magazine, among others. Now he’s been recognized as Houston’s Top Latino chef by LUXCIOR Magazine.

Ortega is the author of two cookbooks - Hugo Ortega’s Street Food of Mexico, published in the fall of 2012 and selected by Saveur magazine as one of just six “essential Mexican cookbooks”; and Backstreet Kitchen: Seasonal Recipes From Our Neighborhood Cafe, to celebrate Backstreet Cafe’s 30th anniversary.

Tracy and Hugo are investors in the award-winning Origen restaurant in Oaxaca, Mexico, and created the menu for Hugo’s Cocina at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental airport. Hugo is the first Mexican-born chef to win a James Beard Award, and June 20, 2017, was declared Hugo Ortega Day in Houston by Mayor Sylvester Turner in honor of the award; Hugo has been bestowed the 2017 Craig Claiborne Lifetime Achievement Award from Southern Foodways Alliance. In 2019, Vaught established the Hugo Ortega Endowment Houston Community College’s Culinary Arts Program to support current and future HCC culinary students, and the lobby of the new building is named in Hugo’s honor.

This year, luxury watches overtook Bitcoin and vintage cars to become the most coveted investment option among the three. Though watch prices have fallen since the infamous crypto crash, they are still significantly up from their prices in 2019. With that in mind, here are seven of the best luxury watches to invest in for 2023:

Launched in 1953 for professional divers, the design of the Rolex Submariner has advanced through the years as has its value. For instance, the Rolex Submariner ref. 116610LV, also known as the “Rolex Hulk” is considered to be one of the rarest—thus most valuable—time pieces the watch brand has to offer. It’s a bulky watch, thanks to its large lugs and ceramic bezel. The watch is priced at over $12,000 on Sotheby’s website.

What’s more is that Rolex has increased the price of another one of its Submariner, ref. 124060, over the years. It has raised the cost from $8,100 in 2021 to $8,950 in January 2022—nearly a 10 percent increase, all thanks to its demand.

Come 2022, Americans realized the financial potential of Swiss watches, and the watch brand Patek Philippe was on the top of many lists, especially the iconic timepiece Nautilus 5711/1A. This year, however, Patek Philippe officially discontinued the legendary watch on their website. Though a sad farewell, it raised the resale value of this watch. In a December 2021 auction, the watch sold for $6.5 million. As per Sotheby’s, buying this watch will cost you over $60,000.

Dubbed the “most coveted watch in the world” by some magazines, the is a sporty luxury steel watch that was first introduced in 1976. The watch features a unique octagonal case and a horizontally-embossed dial. Its wait time can be up to ten years, and celebrities, like Leonardo DiCaprio, have sported it on various important occasions.

In May 2022, a vintage Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watch sold for over $1 million at an auction. Additionally, last year, watch brand Audemars Piguet’s revenue rose by over 30 percent to $1.6 billion. Thanks to that increase, the brand leveled the economic playing field with Patek. Evidently, Audemars Piguet is a watch brand worth keeping an eye on, for it might give you significant value in the future.

Specifically, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak collection is one to make a note of. The watch was first introduced in 1972 and featured an octagonal bezel and an integrated bracelet. As per the Hodinkee shop, a pre-owned Royal Oak watch can cost you about $27,000.

In 1969, Buzz Aldrin stepped on the moon wearing an Omega Speedmaster Pro fessional timepiece. Since then, the watch has been dubbed the “Moonwatch” by aficionados and worn by astronauts on every manned space mission by NASA. Globally, it is among the most sought-after watches, so much so that, in 2021, Ome ga teamed up with another watch brand Swatch to launch a younger, more affordable iteration of this watch: the MoonSwatch, which costs just about $300. Long queues and intense social media buzz marked this watch’s launch, thus cementing the watch’s legacy and demand to date. However, if you want to keep it classic and opt for the Omega “Moon watch”, it can cost you somewhere between $6,300 and $52,000 as per the official Omega website.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is a unique luxury watch that features a reversible case. The watch was introduced in 1931 in response to a request made by a polo player for a practical watch that could withstand the sport’s intensity.

Even today, it remains one of the most popular models from Jaeger-LeCoultre. That its design has barely changed over the years is a testament to the lasting impact of this watch. For instance, the Reverso Complication À Triptyque is the first watch in this collection featuring three faces. The Reverso collection boasts various rare timepieces worth adding to your collection and can hold their value. According to Sotheby’s, this watch will cost you over $75,000.

Marked by long waiting times and great demand, the Overseas holds its value like most top-notch luxury brands. The Vacheron Constantin Overseas is a luxury watch introduced in 1977 and reimagined in 2016. Last year, the Overseas 4500V shot to fame, thanks to social media influencers sporting it online, thus also boosting its value.

A New Italian Sensation in The

Given its rank as the most diverse city in the nation, Houston just won’t stop growing its dining scene. And Italian restaurants are one of the favorite cuisines, adding new names to the mix every year. However, only a few make it to the ultra-luxury group, and it appears that the prestigious River Oaks District will be home to the one to top the list: the new Bari Ristorante Italiano, located in the spectacular old Tom Ford corner space of the prestigious shopping center.

River Oaks District has earned its reputation as one of the most iconic shopping and dining districts in Houston, where those that want to mingle amongst the chicest and most beautiful, flock to the scene.

When one enters Bari, the energy and magic that surge from the meticulously designed space can be sensed, welcoming those coming through its’ doors ready to enjoy some of the best Italian dishes in Texas.

The restaurant was designed by the famous Houston designer, Carlos Castroparedes, who has brought all his experiences and knowledge from his 32 years of working on projects in every sector of the Hospitality Industry, domestically and internationally. Castroparedes is known for his collection of projects in Dubai, Scottsdale, Arizona, France, Spain, Mexico, and of course right here in his hometown Houston. Now he’s done it again, funneling the best of his innovative concepts into this magical space.

On a few walls, blocks of Pink Himalayan Sea Salt, lit from behind, reflect an aura unknown to Houston, thus far – as they emanate a unique visual sensation that aide to create an ambiance like no other.

Castroparedes chose to use Himalayan Salt in this particular application, due to the power of the sea salt as a remitter of negative ions which ultimately helps to purify the air where they are located, helping to create a calm, relaxing and comfortable setting and the same time reaping many health benefits for individuals, such as energy increases, stress reduction and ultimately, mood boosts at a biochemical level.

In the fabulous open kitchen area, the Chefs will also use blocks of Pink Himalayan Sea Salt to complement the cooking of their dishes, adding to the power of the use of this natural resource.

In the main restaurant area, hang four magnificent chandeliers that were made in Valencia, Spain, their lines crafted and guided by contemporary Venetian design, as were the small table lamps that decorate each table.

The interior seating was manufactured in Italy and graced with superior Italian design and exceptional comfort – as were the barstools, which were made with high-quality Italian wood and upholstered in extra soft Italian perforated leather, helping to create the comfort sought for the ideal seat to be able to relax and linger.

The back bar area is truly a spectacular sight, permitting a privileged view of the extensive collection of liquor and tequilas from around the world with the wine cellar complementing the space with its’ marvelous selection of wine and champagne.

As mentioned previously, the open kitchen is truly a jewel, as it allows the diner the unique opportunity of being able to watch the preparation of the dishes, under the strict regimen of spotless hygiene and cleanliness, as the Italian dishes are created and plated.

In the main area of the restaurant, one can enjoy a conversation with the other people at their table – without having to raise the tone of their voice, due to the carefully selected acoustical ceiling that goes throughout! And also, diners will note the columns in the restaurant, whose bottom half is dressed with a thin sheet of lava rock, fabricated by the Grupo Porcelanosa in Spain - in honor of the famous Vesuvius volcano.

The restaurant is fortunate to be graced with beautiful large window panels, whose view is the restaurant area’s outdoor patio. Comfortable seating, framed by the manicured landscaping and vibrant colors that River Oaks District is so famous for – creates yet another area of the restaurant that diners can enjoy.

In regard to the restrooms, the prestigious Grupo Porcelanosa also played an important role. From the floors, walls, and countertops – all before-mentioned specified products were supplied by Porcelanosa – as was the majestic material gracing the façade of the restaurant.

This incredible restaurant will be managed and overseen by its’ owners, Pedro Teyuca and Tommy Nally – who, with the success they have had in the past working together, will be dedicated to making this restaurant one of the best in Houston, not only with its exceptional food but with exceptional service – in a fun and vibrant space!

It is also very necessary to mention and give thanks to Grupo Onix, which has helped to support the realization of this marvelous new concept.

A whimsical feature in the restaurant - definitely worth a mention - will be the ‘Selfie Wall’ – where all the ‘Celebrity Houstonian Diners’ can create their own personal digital footprint of their evening!!

Do you wake up feeling sluggish most mornings? Have caffeinated beverages become a necessity to help power you through the day? If this sounds familiar, it’s time to ditch the quick fixes you rely on and develop an energy

What is energy management?

Think of your energy as a limited resource, like money in an account. You begin the day with a certain amount to spend. The amount varies from person to person based on factors, such as age, sleep, stress levels, medical conditions and lifestyle.

Activities and interactions withdraw energy from or deposit energy into your account. While you may not always have control over activities that deplete your energy, you can take steps to deposit more energy into your account.

Follow these seven tips to increase your energy and live a happier, healthier, more productive life:

1.

Eat nourishing food.

A well-balanced, healthy diet is at the core of well-being. But it’s common to regard healthy eating primarily as a tool for weight loss. According to the 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, a balanced diet high in fruits and vegetables, lean protein, low-fat dairy and whole grains is needed for optimal energy. You really are what you eat.

Consume a variety of foods from all the food groups to get a range of nutrients to provide energy throughout the day. Opt for fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables, especially nutrient-dense dark, leafy greens and broccoli, as well as orange vegetables, like carrots and sweet potatoes. You can choose from many types of

management plan. Getting started may seem daunting, but soon you’ll be energized to keep going once you recap the benefits of a happier, healthier, and more productive lifestyle.

2. Sleep seven to eight hours per night.

Prioritizing sleep is one of the best things you can do to set yourself up for a successful, energized day. Sleep deprivation can perpetuate serious health conditions, as well as negatively affect your mood, motivation and energy levels. Getting quality sleep is a healthy habit many people need to improve. Most adults need at least seven to eight hours of shut-eye each night, so what prevents them from getting it?

Observe your sleep patterns if you are struggling with sleep. Take note of how much you sleep each night, factors that contribute to your sleep or lack of it, how rested you feel, and how much energy you have during your day. Then try sleep strategies to improve your sleep, like creating a relaxing and restful environment, minimizing light and noise, establishing a bedtime routine, managing stress, and turning off electronic devices.

Whatever you decide to start with, be consistent. Utilizing the same sleep routine and sleep strategies will help develop your body’s internal alarm clock and can lead to improved sleep quality. With improved sleep quality, people experience better health, and improved emotional well-being, lower risk of diseases, and are more productive.

3. Keep company with good people.

Maximize the amount of time that you spend with people you enjoy being around. Connecting with others who radiate positivity and have similar interests will excite and energize you.

On the other side, people you don’t relate to you or who have negative outlooks, complain often, or make poor choices will only drain your energy account. Be selective about the company you keep.

It’s important to set limits and boundaries to protect yourself and conserve your energy when around people who do not refill your energy reserves.

4. Avoid news overdose.

Consuming news is an important way to stay connected to what’s happening in the world. It can be educational, entertaining and even uplifting.

Unfortunately, the news too frequently is filled with stories of suffering. These stories can skew your view of the world and cause you to focus on your worst fears instead of recognizing the good that surrounds you.

You can’t avoid these stories altogether, but try to minimize your exposure when you can, especially during trying times.

5. Get regular exercise.

Do you find yourself feeling lethargic halfway through the day? Have you ever gotten winded by simple everyday duties, such as grocery shopping or household chores? The Department of Health and Human Services recommends that adults complete at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each week. Contrary to what you might believe, this will add to your energy account and not subtract from it.

Exercise relieves stress and tension, strengthens muscles and boosts endurance, and helps your body work more efficiently during other physical tasks or activities.

6. Do something meaningful each day.

What do you feel passionate about? Do you have a special talent that you’d like to practice more often or share with others? Do something you enjoy every day, even

if it’s a simple act like cooking a healthy meal or listening to your favorite song. Putting effort into the things that matter most to you will help you use and reserve your energy in ways that will bring out the best in you.

7. Think good thoughts for others.

Maintaining a compassionate mindset is another way to conserve energy. One example of practicing this way of thinking is called kind attention. For example, try to make eye contact with a stranger and smile, while thinking “I wish you well.” This positive act can, instead, keep you from judging that person. Judging others can cause us to place judgment on ourselves, and that type of negative internal dialogue can be exhausting.

You’ll feel better with each step you take toward this important self-care investment.

Here are a few simple activities that will help you become more mindful of caring for yourself:

Monitor your energy.

Take your energy “temperature” at various points throughout the day, assigning it a number from 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest energy level. Pay attention to the details of your day so you can identify the people or events that impact you the most.

Make incremental changes.

Once you are aware of some of the people or events that sabotage your energy, consider your next steps. Rather than tackling everything at once, choose an area that is important to you, and be realistic with the goals you set. For instance, if disorganization in your home is a big source of daily stress, pick one cabinet, closet or drawer to clear out each week instead of overwhelming yourself with doing it all at once. Then move on to your next goal when you feel ready.

Plan and prioritize.

Take note of the times during the day when your energy levels tend to be the highest. Decide how you can take advantage of those moments by prioritizing important tasks when you are feeling fresh and productive.

With over 12,000 restaurants from more than 75 countries, Houston is known for its diversity in cuisines from all corners of the earth. Thai is one of them and is certainly coveted for its wide range of rich textures and flavors.

Songkran, located in the heart of Uptown Park, ranks as the #1 Thai restaurant in the city, and for all the right reasons: its food, of course being the first one, but also its magic ambiance and sophisticated service.

“Songkran” is the Thai New Year’s national holiday, celebrated on April 13, and that’s where Ashok Rao -its founder and owner- was inspired to name his prestigious restaurant.

While enjoying the company and stories shared by Ashok himself, we had the opportunity to try several of their ex traordinary dishes.

Starting with the appetizers, we tasted the Chicken Co conut Soup / “Tom Kha Gai” and the Chicken Satay / “Satai Gai” with Massaman peanut dipping sauce. Both are an absolute must before your main course. You may also consider the Thai meatballs in a tangy sauce.

From the wide selection of plates, we opted for the Wagyu Braised Short Ribs / “Nuea Siam”, a braised Wagyu beef and herb chili sauce. Sensational! We also enjoyed the

Grilled Half Chicken / “Gai Yang”, marinated Southern style, with herbs and sweet chili sauce. The Thai Sesame Chicken in tangy tamarind glaze was another beauty. And of course, we couldn’t leave without trying the signature Crispy Whole Red Snapper / “Pla Tod” with its three-flavor sauce. From out of this world!

For someone like me who cannot close a dining experience without a good dessert, Songkran’s Coconut Sticky Rice / “Khao Neow Kati”, topped with assorted seasonal fresh fruits, and the Molten Chocolate Cake, strawberry coulis, almond brittle, and vanilla ice cream, completely sealed the visit with the stamp of “Must Come Again”.

The full bar offers a selection of fine wines, beers, and amazing cocktails to satisfy the most demanding guests. We even had the opportunity to improvise the photography of the Naga Fire Ball, Laphroaig 10 yrs., Hibicus Syrup, and Lime Juice.

Songkran definitely made LUXCIOR’s list of the Top 10 choices in Houston for a memorable dining experience. Just a word of caution: It can get addictive.

Maximizing the use of the space given for the closet is a must. We have done a lot of remodels where we have moved walls and taken space from the bedroom or bathroom to add to the closet. When this isn’t possible, we have made an addition onto the house so that the closet got the attention that the client’s desired.

New Immigration Process for Venezuelans

Since 2014, over 6.8 million Venezuelans have migrated all over the world to escape the devastation in their country caused by severe ongoing eco nomic and political instability. Thousands of Venezuelans have come to the United States, as well, seeking refuge in this country and applying for asylum. Many have also benefited from the Deferred Enforcement Departure “DED” and the Temporary Protective Status “TPS” programs implemented by the Department of Homeland Security in 2021.

Both DED and TPS programs are temporary in nature, but they have afforded Venezuelans who are already here, a chance to live and work lawfully in the United States. Initially, the Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas designated Venezuela for Temporary Protective Status (TPS) for 18 months, effective March 9, 2021, through Sept. 9, 2022.

Recently, the Secretary of Homeland Security, announced the extension of Venezuela’s designation for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for another 18 months, until March 10, 2024. This is great news for Venezuelans and due to this extension, the Employment Authorization for all Venezuelans who have TPS is auto extended through September 9, 2023. We encourage all Venezuelans to apply timely and take advantage of this extension. The deadline to apply for TPS registration is November 7, 2022.

The country conditions in Venezuela continue to deteriorate. As a result, we have seen a rising number of Venezuelans encountered at our border over the past two years, and that number has surged in the last few months. As of August, of this year, the Venezuelans are the 2nd largest group to enter the U.S. Southern border (after Mexicans), surpassing the numbers of Guatemalans and Hondurans. To address the overwhelming issue at the border the USCIS has

implemented a new Process for Venezuelans. On October 12, 2022, the Department of Homeland Security “DHS” announced joint actions with Mexico to reduce the number of people arriving at the Southwest border and create a more orderly and safe process for people fleeing the humanitarian and economic crisis in Venezuela.

USCIS began implementing this new process on Oct. 18, 2022. The Process for Venezuelans mirrors very closely the United for Ukraine Program that DHS implemented earlier this year, and it is meant to provide a lawful and streamlined way for nationals of Venezuela, who are outside the United States and lacking U.S. entry documents, to come to the United States.

Through a fully online and free process, individuals can be considered, on a caseby-case basis, for advance authorization to travel to the United States and seek a temporary period of parole for up to two years.

The Process is also meant to deter Venezuelans from travelling to Mexico to pursue entry into the United States illegally. The DHS has made it clear that Venezuelans who enter the United States between ports of entry, without authorization, will be returned to Mexico and will not be eligible for the program.

In order to be eligible for the New Process, Venezuelans must:

• have a supporter in the United States who will provide financial and other support;

• Pass rigorous biometric and biographic national security and public safety screening and vetting; and

• complete vaccinations and other public health requirements.

Venezuelans are ineligible if they:

• have been ordered removed from the United States in the previous five years;

• have crossed without authorization between ports of entry after the date of anouncement;

• have irregularly entered Mexico or Panama after the date of announcement, or are a permanent resident or dual national of any country other than Venezuela, or currently hold refugee status in any country; or

• have not completed vaccinations and other public health requirements.

Similarly, to the United for Ukraine Program, any U.S.-based individual with lawful status, including representatives of businesses or other organizations or entities, can support a potential beneficiary from Venezuela. A supporter must prove that they have the means to provide financial and other support for the beneficiary, and must file the Form I-134, Declaration of Financial Support, to commence the process.

Venezuelans can’t apply, unless the supporter in the United States has filed this form and has committed to financial support. Venezuelans approved via this process will be authorized to travel to the United States, and once in the United States, they will be eligible to apply for work authorization for 2 years.

While the New Process seems promising, more needs to be done to assist the Venezuelans. Asylum as we know is a very lengthy and complicated process, with thousands of Venezuelans currently waiting for their chance at an interview appointment by the asylum office, or for a hearing date before an immigration Judge to tell their story. DED and TPS programs and the new Process for Venezuelans, while beneficial, are temporary in nature. We need a more permanent solution for Venezuelans and for all the immigrants who flee their countries due to despair, and who call this country home. Our government needs to commit once and for all and Congress must pass a long overdue immigration reform.
