Intern Researcher As a member of a small research team, I conducted applied design research by developing algorithmic design systems in python and Java code focused on the production of new design proposals for architecture and public art. I worked to resolve complex geometric and architectural problems through digital modelling, drawings, and physical prototypes. Lab technician As main responsible of the lab I was in charge of servicing and running laser cutters, cnc milling machines, 3d printers, and of giving assistance to students. Junior Architect/Designer As a junior architect in the design department, I was primarily responsible for production of preliminary 3D studies, graphic material, physical models and computational research through parametric modelling. I also worked as a lead designer on two small private projects and developed technical drawings in collaboration with production department and environmental design team. Tianjin International Airport, China
The area for the new Tianjin International Airport is located in the Tianjin Binhai New Area, 40 km from the city centre and 150 km from Beijing. This area has been identified as the engine of the next Chinese development. The new terminal will be built on the site currently occupied by the Tianjin Tanggu Airport, and has to have 24 gates, 2 landing/take-off runways 02/20 3,600 m x 45 m, a parking area with 5,000 covered and 3000 uncovered parking spaces. The entrance to the Terminal is on the 3rd floor, at a height of 14.50 m. The separation of flows occurs through a division on different levels, adopting ground and first floors for arrivals and second, third and fourth floors for departures.
Since multilevel terminals are by their nature more complex, the objective of the design is to establish efficient patterns of flows and ensure a certain sense of orientation. A multiple levels terminal reduces the distances for travellers and allows a direct access to the aircraft from the upper floor. Through insulation analysis it is possible to run a preliminary study on the geometry in order to assess energy performance and to design a parametric responsive skin according to the values of solar radiation. Photovoltaic panels placed on the roof vary their size depending on the solar radiation in a direct proportional way: it is maximum for the highest values and minimum for lowest values.

Al Rashid Tower is a multifaceted project located in the middle of Downtown Dubai. It consists of a residential high rise building with 32 levels of serviced apartments and 4 levels of podium. The tower hosts 160 units and offers views on the Burj Khalifa to the north-west and on the artificial lakes to the south-east.

The rooftop hosts a big pool which is shared among the residences and from where panoramic view is 360째 degrees. The podium sits under the serviced apartments and offers a range of amenities and services. These include a spa, health and well-being centre, a sports centre, retail outlets, restaurants, a club and a lounge.

FIRST AVENUE MALL
Retail mall, Motor City, Dubai - UAE
Complementing the open environs of Dubai Motor City with a walk-through design, First Avenue Mall serves as the social centre and retail hub for the entire community. Adjacent to the development’s main pedestrian and vehicular thoroughfares, the mall offers a rich variety of outdoor and indoor spaces with a mix of retail and dining areas. Its architecture – a series of stepped and curving plazas – blends in seamlessly with existing buildings and the surrounding
landscape and contributes to the natural shading of the main promenade. In addition to 39 retail outlets, there are 15 restaurants and cafés and a multiplex cinema with 10 screens. All these functions are distributed across the mall’s ground and first floors, with the basement level offering ample car parking. A 150-key hotel is distributed across two upper levels and includes rooms facing the motorbike track next to the mall.

Situated within the lively master-planned Dubai Motor City development, the building hosts a variety of residential units including duplexes as well as stylish smaller apartments. The flats are arranged over six floors and are alternated with large common terraces for public use. The complex also hosts two outdoor swimming pools, a playground area, a gym with indoor swimming pool.

AL-WASL ROAD EXTENSION

The project is a proposal for Al Wasl Road extension. The area is a small portion of one of the main arterial roads in Dubai that crosses the city from north to south. The intervention is part of a bigger programme which tries to provide the city with green and pedestrian zones combined with cycling lanes. The project is almost entirely under the ground level with
slightly undulating pedestrian paths that intersect around a mixed use low building. The lowest level is partially occupied by parking spaces - accessible from the two extremities of the building - services and shops. The second floor includes cafĂŠs, restaurants and open spaces conveniently shaded to avoid solar heating during warm seasons.

Occupying a prestigious location in Dubai’s TECOM district, The Centre overlooks Sheikh Zayed Road – taking inspiration from this busy thoroughfare’s energy, zest and vibrancy. Stylish commercial units and retail showrooms enjoy uncluttered views
of the surrounding areas. The two main frontages that face the street offer an excellent retail location, and host a variety of shopping outlets. The upper floors of the complex host four big offices each for a total of 5000 sqm.

Rawdhat Residential and commercial Building is part of a large-scale urban plan close to the Al Bateen Executive Airport in Abu Dhabi. The scheme brings together numerous and different residential units, animated at ground level by shops, restaurants and a range of civic spaces at the service of the entire new quarter.
The complex is oriented to minimise solar gains and maximise views toward the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. The regular shape of the main building is interrupted to create multiple visual connections with the city and increase cross natural ventilation, while blocking the view toward the near airport.

Urban Requalification in Incisa Valdarno - Italy
The project for the new multifunctional area closed to the Incisa Railway Station comes from the study of the site and especially from its relationship with the railroad. The convergence in the site of urban, architectural, infrastructural and environmental elements and characters is the paradigm of Italian small urban realities and creates a multitude of factors to evaluate. The station reinforces its role of city gate and generates a new complex which reverses the character of margin, of urban rear, of introverted space. The site becomes a hinge between the town and the region through a functional mixer that fosters relationships and exchanges between different users.
The station area is a new identity for a main entrance to the city, a place that offers a wide variety of services that make it active and safe 24 hours a day. The pedestrian movement is the common element: the intersection of different traffic systems is minimized to optimize pedestrian accessibility to all facilities. All main functions are concentrated in the square in front of the station and make it an accessible space at any time of the day. In addition to the youth hostel, there is the access to the car park as well as two working poles, a dining area and a lounge. The farthest area from the main square is destined to the residences and features an outdoor space that works like a court.

A NEW IDENTITY FOR PONTEDERA
Valdera Railway Infrastructure, Pontedera - Italy
The project was proposed by the engineering company Ferrovie Toscane srl to promote the design and the construction of the Porto Ferroviario of Valdera (PFV). The project includes a railway junction complex in the town of Pontedera with three new railway lines: the new rail connection to the Port of Livorno, the new line Lucca-Pontedera, the new Valdera spine for the connections to Volterra. The spillway of Pontedera represents an ideal track to lay a line of rails which permits to reach briefly Livorno and Florence. The aim was to transform the barrier into an opportunity to design the city, creating a new urban centre. The redevelopment project includes an Exhibition Park located between the two most important industrial

areas of the city, Piaggio and the pole of Gello, where industrial and agricultural companies of the area will be able to show their own products. The project defines a new elevated rail infrastructure to ensure a continuous permeability on the ground floor. The transportation system is integrated with a tram track that can hugely increase the number of potential costumers and the efficiency of the railway system. This new urban idea is porous and allows an exchange between the two parts of the city. Green areas create paths for outdoor exhibitions and become important meeting points for the community and for events.

This work investigates CNC milling techniques and their potential ability to receive and send real time feedback from and to an agent based code. Working with variables such as rotation, alignment, trail attraction, and separation, an understanding of agent interrelations, motions, and navigations was achieved. Live feedback testing required the recalibration of previously developed agent behaviours. Through introduction of sensor feedback (a photo-sensor), the influence of agent behaviour began either subside or override sensor values.
When considering the milling process, the introduction of feedback loop attempts to disrupt the typical stream of digital information, whether it be G-Code or RML language, and use actions in progress to shape the final outcome. Through the introduction of photo sensor,s the machine is able to respond to varying conditions across the material. This information is sent back to the computer and read again by the CNC, thus closing the responsive loop.

MinusPlus investigates the use of multi-copters (UAVs) to continuously 3d print and reconfigure a temporal architecture that adapts, learning from people’s behavioural feedback. The research employs reversible light-weight materials of low melting-point that are easily 3d printed, re-melted and re-printed by UAVs. Bottom-up swarm building strategies are utilised to enable real-time design solutions to emerge from individual and collective flight behaviours. The research explores material behaviour, flight control and swarm collaboration through both physical and digital experiments. Beeswax and tethered UAV printing hardware were developed for indoor testing, while light-weight metal alloys were utilised for outdoor printing. Both materials demonstrated a low-melting point and controllable phase changing properties that enabled the strategic employment of dripping for structural reinforcement and bonding when desirable. Several flight control systems were developed that enabled 3d printing trajectories to incorporate micro-movements that

harnessed the mechanical capabilities of the multi-copters through scripted manoeuvres along with real-time autonomous decision-making utilising on-board and off-board computer-vision feedback. Minusplus’ design proposal explores the Southbank area of the Thames River in London as a test-bed for a continuously changing public space where aerial 3d printed construction could adapt and reconfigure the site’s multi-level outdoor spaces that comprise of a mixture of podiums, esplanades, walls, green spaces and pathways. The project aims to transform the existing spaces of the site to into a continuously changing architectural environment that allows for construction and deconstruction over time in relation to human behaviours and events. Human occupation and use of the site will inform an adaptive learning construction algorithm that will aim to remove under-utilised or problematic constructions whilst enhancing or repeating well-received building activities.
