Bigger & Better!

ABOUT THE ARTS COUNCIL

Welcome to the Arts Council Team...

Fall brought some change to the Arts T heCouncil in an effort to be more supportive of

our diverse arts community. The management of ArtsFest, our annual arts festival and fund raising event, is back in house, with Clint Starling as Events & Sponsorship Manager. He will be working year-round to cultivate our events, social media and sponsorship support. Clint is a graduate of Martin County high school and Stetson University. Recently he has been a strong advocate for the issues facing the St Lucie River having organized several rallies last summer. He is one of the co-founders of the Lounge Series, designed to be an entertaining evening for people under 35 in Stuart! We’ve also added a part-time position to focus on two of our key mission-related programs: Arts Education and the Court House Cultural Center Galleries. Jennifer Hearn is a graduate of South Fork High School and FAU, majoring in Elementary Education. She has worked with Stuart Art Supply and many of our local artists for years and is an active volunteer in a local Parent Teacher Association. So, the next time you stop by the Court House Cultural Center, please say “hi” to Jennifer and Clint. They have added a new and refreshing dynamic to our long-standing team… Karen Barnes, Elaine Keller and Judy Walker. Working together with our many volunteers and board members, we can continue the legacy we started in 1980. ane Davis Doggett, an internationally acclaimed graphic designer, is one of the pioneering women artists to have trained at the Yale School of Art and Architecture during its modernist heyday. Her colorful and comprehensive thematic graphic identity and wayfinding systems now enliven many public complexes, including 40 international airport projects — more than any other designer in the world. Doggett has received acclaim for her designs on an international scale with her work published in Italy, Japan, Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. In her later years she has returned to her artistic roots, exploring how color, geometry, and literature combine to express philosophically profound truths. Her work was recently on display at the Elliott Museum with artists Albers and Welliver. Doggett was on the founding board of directors for the Arts Council, and worked diligently to foster arts awareness in our community in the 1980’s and really, ever since. She works with the Town of Jupiter Island and their arts-related activities.

ArtsFest 2014: Osprey & Mangrove POSTERS & T-SHIRTS to feature the work of Amber Moran at ArtsFest 2014!

The artwork selected for ArtsFest tells a story about our community. This year a piece was sought that visually expressed the fragile nature of our local ecosystem and the flora and fauna that are dependant upon it. We are very excited to be working with Amber Moran, a young and flourishing local artist who is developing a following. See her and 100+ other artists at ArtsFest… and buy what inspires you!

Amber Moran:

Featured ArtsFest Artist Amber Moran said: “I am honored and excited to have been asked to be this year’s ArtsFest featured artist. I have been passionate about and inspired by both the art world and our natural environment since I was a young girl. I am motivated to show viewers our surroundings here in Florida in a different approach using watercolors and ink, whether it be related to the ocean or in the wild. In this Osprey and Mangrove piece I created for this year’s event, I wanted to simply portray a scene we all know well here on the Treasure Coast, and would make us think of home.” Amber enjoys studying marine life not only to enhance her artwork but to inspire her boys who already have a love for the ocean to also have a love for coastal conservation as they grow older. Amber lives in Stuart with her husband and two young boys.

TEN WOMEN IN ART: Personal Baggage

At the Court House Cultural Center through April 11, 2014; Gallery hours Tues-Fri 10-4, Sat 11-3; Special ArtsFest Hours, Sat/Sun 10-4

e assume it’s best to travel light. Someone has to carry the bags; someone has to store them and they can be unwieldy and hard to move around. Maybe there simply isn’t enough room for it all. If you’re packing steamer trunks full of baggage physically and metaphorically speaking that could cost you. Experience, too, can be its own kind of baggage. It is as unique as our genes, our memories, our behaviors, our capacity for humor, folly, wisdom; our latent capacities for courage, cruelty, change and selflessness; our threshold for pain, joy and outrage; our memories, our loves.

TEN WOMEN IN ART are celebrating 30 years as an organization, having had their first exhibit in 1984. Nancy Dillen, Ellen Pavlakos, and Susan Martin are founding members, so the membership has changed through the years. “We’ve met some wonderful women artists during those thirty years. We’ve celebrated successes and shared tragedies, both personal and professional. We enjoy one another’s company so much that we often find it difficult to discuss the business of the group rather than art. There is a bond, a common passion that unites us, as corny as that sounds. And producing art is a solitary activity so we welcome the shared time together,” stated Susan Martin. 1

New Public Art: Colorado Avenue, Florida Water Bird Sculptures THE CITY OF STUART is proposing a new public art installation as part of the City of Stuart’s Centennial Celebration. Along with private donations, the City has requested funding from the NEA for this project which will commission wildlife artist Geoffrey C. Smith to sculpt six (6) Florida Water Birds. The “Florida Water Bird Sculptures” will welcome residents and visitors to our beautiful waterfront community. The placement of the centerpiece sculpture in the traffic circle at the intersection of Colorado Avenue and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard will join the three districts: the traditional African American community/East Stuart Main Street, the historic Downtown and the US 1 Corridor. Stay tuned as this artistic project develops!

Enhancing Arts Education:

Through Plein Air Day

T

his third annual event for advanced high school art students is an intensive program with local, professional artists. By taking students into field to study, as so many our most admired artists in history have, they are following in the footsteps of these grand masters. The Pine School, Clark Advanced Learning Center, Martin County, South Fork and Jensen Beach high schools will in total bring 75 students to this full-day program. Supported with funds from Target and the “State of the Arts” license plate program, this year’s program takes place with our location hosts at Sunlight Ranches and the FL TRAC Tying the arts education program to our “Inside Track” exhibition enables this education program to spread its wings and take on new meaning for the students and artists, alike. Additional inkind support and product discounts further the reach of our program with credit to Stuart Art Supply.

The Arts Council thanks and recognizes our teaching artists, volunteers and teachers who support this learning opportunity. Teaching Artists: Lynne Barletta (pastels), Tom Winter (photography), Pamela Hoke (acrylics), Susana Cremin (watercolor), and Tom Prestopnik (drawing). Volunteers: Sally Browning-Pearson, Kendra Deltano, Jane Wheeler, Debra Alessandra, Roni Bartolini, and Vera Mangold. Teachers: Maria Miele (Pine); John Stiles (Clark); Daniel Gorostiaga and Tracy Canada (JBHS); Tami Conrad and Shelby Power (SFHS); and Sharon Hagin, Brian Johnson and Gary Deaton (MCHS).

Following Frances Langford’s long standing philanthropic support of our community, the Frances Langford Foundation has invested in many of the same organizations that she funded during her lifetime, such as Florida Oceanographic Society, United Way of Martin County and Martin Memorial Hospital. Her legacy has been carried forward by the trustees of the Frances Langford Foundation, Evans Crary and John Turner, with gifts to the Elliott Museum campaign, Florida Arts & Dance Company, and the Arts Council among others. Ms. Langford’s career included acting and singing in more than 30 films.

Terry Barber

Francine Beckstead

Nominated by Doug Jewett Since Terry Barber established his home in Martin County in 2009, he has been a driving force for the arts. Founder of Artists for a Cause, Terry has brought artists of all genres together in various community events. Whether performing opera, jazz or popular favorites, he breathes new life into everything he sings; what the Los Angeles Times calls “performances of great vitality and verve.”

Nominated by Maureen Gawel Francine Beckstead has volunteered with the Barn Theatre for 14 years. She dedicates countless hours to the Barn, managing the theater, helping with shows, putting on fundraisers, even making food for events. I’ve worked with Francine for 3 years now and am amazed and humbled by her dedication. Few people demonstrate the dedication to the arts that Francine does.

Upon retirement to Martin County, FL she immediately immersed herself in the art community. Jane, painting under the name “Ejan”, has garnered many awards and exhibited in numerous juried shows. Jane is best known for her three dimensional palette knife paintings of birds.

Spencer Ballantyne

Nominated by Marcus Rabb I have had the absolute pleasure of knowing and working with this young man for the last 8 years at the Pine School. Spencer has been an incredible role model for the hundreds of students he has grown up around during his school career. He’s seen his share of leading roles, studied dance, voice and piano, and never ceases to amaze audiences with his positive energy and professionalism.

Student Performing Artist

Christina Perez

Nominated by Gary Deaton Christina is an exceptional artist. She is currently working on her second level Advanced Placement Art course and is a role model to the other AP art students. She has won multiple awards at art shows and was awarded the most outstanding MCHS Art Student for 2012-13. She is a young woman of exemplary character who has worked for the arts and in volunteer and leadership activities.

Student Visual Artist

Kevin Paul

Nominated by Terry Barber Kevin Paul is more than just a triple threat. With exceptional skills as an actor, singer, dancer, pianist and guitarist, I cannot recommend him more highly. President of the Artists 4 A Cause club at the Pine School, Kevin pioneered our “share arts” program, leading peer artists as they connected with youth in an at-risk community. He is committed, enthusiastic, genuine, and warm-hearted.

Student Performing Artist

Amanda Wind

Nominated by Daniel Gorostiaga I came to know Amanda two years ago when she took one of my classes. Amanda showed great interest in various artists she had not heard of before, and was quick to apply new concepts to her evolving artworks. At the end of this course, Amanda created one final work, “Point of Gravity”, which was purchased by the Elliot Museum.

a great example of how we, at the Arts Council, try to tie the arts together with our greater community,” noted Nancy Turrell, Executive Director at The Arts Council of Martin County. Several pieces sold during the course of the exhibition as well as Anthony Alonso’s fine art books. Our partnership with Florida Thoroughbred Rehabilitation and Adoptive Care Center brought in many people from the ranches of western Martin County. Florida TRAC received a generous donation from sculptor, Mindy Colton, to assist them in their efforts to care for aging thoroughbreds. At the Winner’s Circle Dinner donated and sponsored by Diamonds by Terry, in support of the equestrian themed exhibition “Inside Track”, the highlight of the evening was when Mary Alonso pulled out Jane Koppe’s (mother of Kadee Alonso)number and she won the beautiful pendant, created by Terry Rieger. According to the family, this pendant has now become an Alonso family heirloom and will be treasured by all. Thomas Winter
