Practical Ways to Prevent Varicose Veins From Getting Worse

Varicose veins are blood vessels that have become abnormally large and twisted. They can happen in any part of your body, but the veins that are commonly affected are the ones that are located in your legs and feet. They are not uncommon especially among adults. In fact 60 percent of grown ups have some form of warped blood vessels in them.

Anyone is susceptible to varicose veins, but the most prone to this disease are the ones who stay standing for long periods, such as teachers, nurses, and sales ladies of department stores. Women are also twice as likely to develop varicose veins as men, but there are other factors that can lead to their formation, such as:

Age - Aging can cause wear and tear on the valves of the blood vessel. These organs work to regulate blood flow, but years of constant action take their toll on these valves which eventually allow some blood to find its way back into the veins instead of having them flow up into the heart.

Sex - Women are more prone to varicose veins than men especially when hormonal changes occur during pregnancy or in the pre-menstrual and menopausal stage.

Heredity - If varicose veins run in your family, you will have a good chance of getting the disease.

Obesity - Obese and overweight people tend to have a higher risk of varicose veins because their weight puts more pressure on their veins.

1. Avoid standing for long periods.

If you are engaged in a job that requires you to spend long hours on your feet, you should be able to take a break to give your legs and feet time to rest. During the break, try to sit with your legs raised at the same level as your heart. Avoid crossing your legs when you sit.

2. Move your legs to allow blood to flow through your veins.

Good circulation plays a big role in the prevention of varicose veins.

3. Maintain a healthy weight.

Being obese or overweight reduces your body's ability to circulate blood efficiently in your body. Poor circulation increases the pressure on your veins and reduces their capacity to supply blood to the heart. The veins in your legs are especially affected because they are located at the lowest level of your body.
