PRECIOUS LITTLE 2022 The last little while has afforded us all opportunities that come with isolation…to dream of happier times and places. During my time to dream, I became the grateful recipient of Aunty Meg’s mink jacket. Throughout my life I have somehow acquired a couple of friends’ fur coats and mink stoles, the first when I was just fifteen – a neighbour called Mrs McDonald passed away and her daughter passed it on to me. These gifts are largely due to the changes that have occurred in our thinking about the fashion fur trade – my friends who have had these incredible pieces bestowed upon them by their elderly aunts and mothers have been unable to keep, like or wear these garments, and they have come to me very generously with comments such as “I thought you’d like this” or “you’ll know what to do with it”. Seventy years ago Aunty Meg’s jacket was the height of fashion for Sydney ladies, though never really quite right for our climate. I think Mrs McDonald’s mink stole was equally as chic and may have been slightly more wearable. In the absence of a destination, I embarked upon a journey through time in my studio with these long cared for garments. Removing the stitches revealed secret layers of linings, running tacks, beautiful ruched silk trims, hand written measurements, strange insignias and decorative pockets. In some cases a hundred years of treasured heirloom was being unpicked and re-valued. More recent garments lack the durability, fine craftsmanship and frankly, the muse. Back in the days of real travel, I spent some months in Alaska where fur garments move in a vastly different realm of service. The furrier holds skills that are greatly valued and often passed down within a family. I learned a little about fur cutting and sewing from them, and it has been my delight to dream back to a time when trappers risked everything mid-winter for the furriers, and in turn for the fur garments to be tanned and produced into life-saving protective garb. Alaskan fur takes the Wild West to the far north and into Russian culture. I spent my time in the seaports and noticed that women’s work has undergone some of the changes over time too. Fishing, hunting, childbearing, ceremony and dance are all precious aspects of life, but the dance has changed a little these days. Precious Little is an exhibition of work that required me to sit still and draw on old materials, skills and memories. I owe my thanks to my mother Maureen for the experience I had as a child, slipping quietly into her wardrobe nestling into her mink stole, feeling at once its ice cool satin, then warm soft fur. Thanks also to Miss Davis, for welcoming me in her residence in Alaska; to Mike Matney in Wrangell Trading Post for sharing his knowledge; to Aunty Meg & Mrs McDonald for being stylish generous women; and to Aunty Anne, for encouraging this spark in me.
