“The two characters in this painting come from the Australian illustrations and paintings that thrilled me as a child and teenager - the slightly creepy and alluring Snugglepot and Cuddlepie by May Gibbs and the impossibly serpentine and voluptuous female creatures of Norman Lindsay’s paintings. Both represent a complex position in Australian iconography.
The two images ´the Banksia man’ (Gibbs) and main prize from Buccaneers reward (Lindsay, c. 1940) have been part of a collection of well used images I keep in the studio and throw together with other imagery to see what the process of painting them delivers. This is the first time I’ve put these two together but in doing so, it seems they’ve already met.”
