Falling Water
LIST OF WORKS
Having experienced some of the world’s harshest landscapes, I have often chosen to paint locations where elements collide – where the ocean meets the rugged rock of coastline, the mountains melt into surging seas, or rivers carve their paths through ancient gorges.
Cascade, 2019, acrylic on canvas, 182 x 182 cm
These intersections of water and land have been my main preoccupation for many years. In my current exhibition, Falling Water, I have turned to those landscape features in which these elements are perhaps most entwined – waterfalls.
Downrush, 2021, acrylic on canvas, 101 x 101 cm
Outpouring, 2021, acrylic on canvas, 137 x 137 cm Head Water, 2021, acrylic on canvas, 137 x 137 cm
Overflow, 2021, acrylic on canvas, 167 x 167 cm Moving Water, 2021, acrylic on canvas, 152 x 213 cm
These paintings are the direct result of my response and wonder at the ever-changing, random, sometimes violent, yet often ethereally beautiful, nature of waterfalls. By presenting paintings that reflect the diversity and drama of different locations I have explored within Australia and New Zealand, I have endeavoured to create – and hope to stimulate – a connection to a larger experience, one that is immersive and energizing and that engages your senses through memory and imagination. Water shapes and forms our planet by its presence and by its absence – its importance in our lives is unquestionable. I hope that these paintings stimulate a greater awareness of the value of the natural world and a desire to protect it.
