Vertical West Melbourne This proposal for a mixed-use facility in the corner of Spencer street and Batman street, seeking a response to the future development in this area. The site is located in the east side of West Melbourne, it used to be the place for light industry and office buildings, nowadays this site is gradually becoming to a residential and retail mixed zone. This project reflects different symbolic areas in the West Melbourne by having different program clusters. This proposal also challenges the traditional way of designing high-rise building typology. Different from the traditional enclosed ecosystem, the entire project opens up to the public by providing the idea of ‘vertical street’. As combining both ‘the reflection of city’ and ‘vertical street’, this project creating a vertical experience of the city. Eventually, it become a stimulator for culture and exchanging ideas, different disciplines open to each other and diverse form of life can be found inside this building.

BRIEF INTERPRETATION The brief requesting several programs, such as social lounge, gym, yoga, restaurant, hotel, event hosting and office. ‘VERTICAL STREET’ Inspired from Melbourne street culture and looking into the nature of urban life, the importance of street in our urban experience speaks for itself. In this project, idea of street become the major vertical circulation. Similar to how streets were form in our city, each program shared 15 to 20 percent of space to public. Therefore, the entire building is accessed to public, but certain private program (hotel, langue etc.) still has its own boundary between its occupants and public.

‘REFLECTION OF CITY’ ‘The reflection of city’ in this project is mainly referring to the direct interpretation of urban program. The idea here is aiming to create a schematic experience echoes to mundane urban life. This not only help travelers or tourists have a general understanding of what the West Melbourne is made of, but also creating a conversation between a building and a city.

Slab: Catalytic Intervention Australia is currently struggle to firm itself as an innovative nation. The economy is charged by the commodity production of industry, fall behind by other nations which have invested in a “knowledge economy” centred around economy. The Swanston/Grattan precinct provide us with reminder of Australia’s latent potential for innovation. Consisting of student apartment, small retail business, educational institutions and a variety of small companies alongside an even smaller amount of start up businesses, this block located in between two of influential academic institutions the University of Melbourne and RMIT. This proposal for Swanston/Grattan, an inten-
tion to unite existing fragmental conditions and to increase the connectivity was formalised through insertion of an unified platform. The gigantic unified platform is inspired by Archizoom’s unbuilt project Nostop City. This project suggests a new typology that takes a slice of existed urban fabric and mixed various programs with intended redundant spaces. It then creates a lot Intersections of formal spaces and informal spaces. These intersections are where communication and innovation can be fostered.

SITE ANALYSIS A series of analyses were carried out. Looking into existed urban fabric, building structure, circulation and different occupants according to various programs.

NO-STOP CITY No-stop City is an unbuilt project by Archizoom. The drawing of this project shows an infinitely extending of grid, and space is subdivided by partial lines symbolising walls, also some natural features are inserted as interruptions. The photograph shows an endless and rather featureless space in which human lives a ‘primitive’ life. Both natural pieces and artificial products were brought in this project, showing an attempt to summarized people’s basic requirements of living. What special about this project is architects trying to express architecture as instrument of emancipation. This proposal calls for emancipating from the rhetorical forms of humanitarian socialism and rhetorical progressivism. Also it suggests occupants can freely occupy any space they want, the deliberate redundancy become a trigger for life and interactions. As a featureless space, it also represent the idea of equalisation, it frees us to be anyone in anywhere.

The existed buildings are isolated both in location and function. The essence of innovation is constantly connection between different discipline. Therefore, firstly we were trying merge all the different programs into one unified slab.
However, we found out ‘all in one’ strategy will not work in the ground level. As existed circulation is not only crucial to occupants, but also to adjacent residents and students. Therefore, the entire structure is lifted up to make full use of negative space.
As the structure is lifted, a contextual separation was created between new structure and existed. Also how the structure is supported is another problem. To solve these questions, we projecting to the existed structural core to the new structure, also the program can be informed by the existed structural grid.
To reinforce the connection between new and old, several openings were designed to allow sunlight penetration into existed public space. Most importantly, these openings also provided opportunities of visual connection within new structure and existed context.

How this ‘generator’ works is through constantly intersecting informal spaces and formal spaces, some deliberated redundant spaces can be occupied temporarily to overlapping different disciplines.

Growing Memory This project aims to implementing the idea of self commissioned architecture, propose an architectural intervention that will express, support, amplify or question continuous relationships between technical, cultural and natural systems. My site is CERES environment community where located at northeast from university of Melbourne. CERES is a non-profit education and research community that dedicated in help with urban ecology and sustainable development. My client is administrators of CERES community who aiming to creating a community-based learning place that bring economically satisfying, culturally enriching and spiritually nurturing ways of living together. Although

hey have provided great environment and facilities to connect people in the physical way, yet the spiritual connection is rather weak.
Therefore, my design focus on establishing the spiritual connection in CERES community. In this case, by study he idea of DLA (diffusion-limited aggregation), I have deeloped a modular structure that inherent natural quality o echo the theme in CERES community. Meanwhile, have also looked at some well-known precedents of connecting people in the spiritual way, most of them are using physical objects as media to store people’s memories or express people’s thoughts. Therefore, in my design, each module can be seen as container for ndividuals’ memories by store their meaningful objects.

The notion of DLA (Diffusion-Limited Aggregation) is a natural process of accretion. It starts with a seed, then a certain particle attaches with another particle, and this process will recursively running over time, to form a cluster of aggregation. This concept echoes with CERES’ culture and produces a constantly growing structure which could have infinite possibility and a life form.

SPIRITUAL CONNECTION The lacking of spiritual connection is the major problem is CERES’ community. To solve this problem, the design concept is using physical objects as reference to people’s thoughts, then connecting them together to symbolise the connection of people’s memories.

PROGRAM DESGIN By referencing to DLA system, I made few initial structural settings as origin seeds. People will get access to modules around these settings. Meanwhile, in reality, people will connect each module very randomly which is very similar to randomly moving particles in DLA system. In order to control outcome, people will more likely to connect modules to the adjacent settings, and avoid to develop structures toward path or river.

Reading Room The brief is asking for a temporary reading room for students in university campus. Immediately, there are two important design criteria came to my mind, 1) offer unique reading experience. 2) easy for assembly and disassembly. Firstly, I have found a lot of students would like to spending time to read under the tree, but this experience only happened where tree is. Therefore, I wanted to design a reading room that can echo the experience of reading under the tree, which allowing people can still experience this enjoyable feeling even without go under the tree. And the core of this project is all about idea of spark light and expendable form. Lastly, the structure can be quickly built by 4-5 students, as it all structural connections are simple mortise and tenon joints.
