We have a particularly exciting and diverse programme planned for the autumn season. The Centre is delighted to host to some of the most well respected orchestras and musicians, performers, prize-winning novelists, poets and comedians. The season gets off to an exciting start in August when the Manchester Pride festival presents a series of lunchtime recitals by LGBT composers past and present. Spearheading our music programme for the season ahead once again are the Quatuor Danel who we can rely on to supply spellbinding musicality and breathtaking virtuosity! We welcome Psappha, one of the UK’s leading new music ensembles, who have recently been appointed as The University of Manchester’s Contemporary Ensemble in Residence. This marks a significant development in the long-standing relationship between the two organisations. We also welcome back the popular Creative Writing Literature Live Reading Series featuring many high profile authors, including a visit from Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney in October. Also in October we are pleased to be hosting, drama alumnus, Ade Edmundson and The Bad Shepherds who are renowned for playing punk songs on folk instruments. These are just a few highlights from this season’s exceptional programme. Introducing The Martin Harris Centre

The Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama is a performance space situated at the heart of the oldest part of the University. Kshitij (unlimited horizon)

The Centre incorporates a 350-seat concert hall, a 150-seat studio theatre and an electroacoustic music studio. The foyer makes an immediately striking impact: its use of light, open space and bold areas of colour blend with Alice Kettle’s dynamic textile artwork, Red and Blue Movement in Three. In September we unveil a newly commissioned piece of work between the Drama department and the Centre - Kshitij (unlimited horizon) - by contemporary abstract artist Shameela Hussain.

About the artist: Shameela Hussain is a contemporary abstract artist based in West Yorkshire, UK. Shameela is a graduate from the University of Huddersfield with a BA (honours) degree in Fine Art in 2006 “Art has been my life passion. Since graduating I have continued my practice as an artist working from my studio in West Yorkshire.” Shameela’s roots lie in Asia and her cultural background has a huge impact in her paintings. The vibrancy, the colours, the festive atmosphere and the rich heritage of India and Pakistan influence the approach to her paintings.

The Centre hosts many musicians, performers and prize-winning authors. It provides an excellent space for contemporary and classic theatre, music and comedy events, and holds a reading series that has in the past featured such literary luminaries as Martin Amis, Will Self, John Banville and Clive James. We also present new and exciting artists who go on to become household names as well as established artists performing to sell-out audiences all over the world.

Within her work colour is an important factor, through the use of colour her aim is to express feelings and emotions. She strongly believes that colour is subjectively Kshitij (unlimited horizon) by Shameela Hussain powerful enough to describe and represent human emotions, forming the ability to visually communicate. The painting was created using washes of colour building up the layers with acrylic paint and gold leaf was used to represent elements of the structure of the building. “My inspiration for creating the painting came from the diverse people who use the building and the influence of music and rhythm within that space.” says Shameela.

So please come along, and discover why the Martin Harris Centre is attracting attention as an important arts venue throughout the North West.

Guardian Book Club event with Howard Jacobson

Celebrated novelist Howard Jacobson will be the featured author for this Guardian Book Club event, and will discuss his ninth novel, Kalooki Nights.

Hosted by John Mullan, professor of English at University College London, the Guardian’s Book Club examines a book a month, via a weekly column in the Guardian Review, a live Q&A session with the author, and a blog-discussion of the featured novel.

Flesh and Blood won the National Book Critics Circle Prize in 1987, Repair was awarded the 2000 Pulitzer Prize, and The Singing won the National Book Award for 2003. He has also been awarded the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, the PEN Voelker Career Achievement Award in Poetry for 1998; a Guggenheim Fellowship, two NEA grants, the Berlin Prize of the American Academy in Berlin, a Lila Wallace Fellowship, and prizes from PEN and the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

C.K. Williams was born in New Jersey in 1936, and lives in Normandy, France. He has published ten books, including New & Selected Poems (1995), The Vigil (1997), Repair (1999) and The Singing (2003) – all four of these were Poetry Book Society Recommendations – followed by Collected Poems (2006) and his latest collection, Wait (2010).

The Centre for New Writing presents a rare opportunity to hear the Nobel Laureate speak about his life and work. Seamus Heaney was born in County Derry in Northern Ireland. Death of a Naturalist, his first collection of poems, appeared in 1966 and since then he has published poetry, criticism and translations including Beowulf (1999) - which have established him as one of the leading poets now at work. In 1995 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. District and Circle (2006) was awarded the T. S. Eliot Prize in 2006. Stepping Stones, a book of interviews conducted by Dennis O’Driscoll, appeared in 2008. In 2009 he received the David Cohen Prize for Literature. This reading celebrates the launch of Heaney’s twelfth collection of poems Human Chain.

Trevor Byrne Trevor Byrne was born in Dublin in 1981. His first novel, Ghosts & Lightning, was published in 2009 by Canongate in the UK and Doubleday in the US, and made the books of the year list for the Guardian and the Irish Times. Byrne has taught Creative Writing at the Dublin Writers’ Centre, the University of Glamorgan, and with Roddy Doyle at the Fighting Words centre. He’s an avid fan of professional wrestling and hates - hates - onions.

Evie Wyld Evie Wyld grew up in London and Western Australia. Her first novel After the Fire, a Still Small Voice was published by Jonathan Cape/ Random House, Random House Australia and Random House US in 2009. She lives and works as a bookseller in South London, and is at work on her second novel.

Craig Raine Craig Raine was born in 1944 and educated at Exeter College, Oxford. His works include a number of poetry collections: The Onion, Memory (1978), A Martian Sends a Postcard Home (1979), A Free Translation (1981), Rich (1984), History: The Home Movie (1994), and Clay. Manchester University Music Society (MUMS) Each year the music society attracts approximately 500 members from every corner of The University of Manchester - undergraduate, postgraduate and staff. The main priority of the society is to provide its members with a large variety of performing opportunities to suit their standard, commitment and tastes. One of the foremost composers of our time, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies is the patron of the Manchester University Music Society. He has made a significant contribution to musical history through his wide-ranging and prolific output, and was appointed Master of the Queen’s Music in March 2004. MUMS members have had their high standard of music making publicly recognised throughout the world. The flagship Symphony Orchestra is at the heart of the Society, touring Bulgaria in September 2009 and reaching the final of the respected SymphUni competition in April 2008. MUWO, the Manchester University Wind Orchestra, won a gold award at the National Concert Band Festival Final in 2008 and continue to impress audiences with their playing skills. Ad Solem, the University’s official chamber choir, travelled to Poland in January and have performed at wellknown venues in and around Manchester. Estival – Manchester’s Biggest Classical Music Festival – which takes place in the final week of each academic year, is always a great celebration of music, the end of exams and the beginning of summer! The first performance for almost 50 years of a neglected gem from Weinberg, plus the dynamic concentration of mature Hindemith.

The traditional music and dance of the Central Asian Uyghurs: thrilling vocals are accompanied by long-necked lutes, spike fiddle and frame drum. This easternmost example of maqam, with its ‘limping’ rhythms and ecstatic poetry, is deeply imbued with the Sufi ethos.

The repertoire of Black Voices, the UK’s première female a cappella group, has something for everyone. They cleverly weave traditional songs from Africa and the Caribbean with very new and popular styles. Inspirational and uplifting, they continue to celebrate the power of the human voice.

Sonata in C major Op. 102 No.1 Three Little Pieces Op.11 Sonata (1948)

Beethoven’s C-major Sonata can be seen as the first of his late period works, whilst Carter’s Sonata of 1948 introduces the rhythmic complexities that would become the hallmark of the composer’s mature style. These frame Webern’s Three Little Pieces, which concentrate expression and drama into the tiniest of spaces.

The unflinching modernism of Aleksandr Mosolov’s first string quartet (1926) meant that it was never performed within his lifetime. The first quartet of Boris Tishchenko was written as he graduated from the composition class of Galina Ustvolskaya in 1957. Followed at 2.30pm by Seminar: Prof. Barry Cooper tells us the fascinating story of the genesis of Beethoven’s Op. 131 String Quartet.

Quatuor Danel Season 2010/11 The University of Manchester’s internationally renowned resident string quartet For its sixth season at the University of Manchester, our international superstar ensemble offers a white-knuckle ride through the greatest, the boldest and the newest of the string quartet repertoire, spiced with solos, duets and quintets. Adrian Edmondson and The Bad Shepherds (pictured, top right) play punk songs on folk instruments. Not as a gag, but because they really like the noise. They think the songs are better than people remember. They love folk instruments. It works. They do songs by The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Stranglers, The Jam, Sham 69, The Undertones, The Ramones, The Buzzcocks, The Specials, Talking Heads, Squeeze and others, even Kraftwerk! Alright, they’re not all punk, but they come from roughly the same era. They’ve mostly given the songs a kind of Celtic feel, and they’ve stuck in the odd reel and jig here and there. But occasionally they just thrash! They’ve always thought the excitement of a reel taking off is the nearest thing to the excitement of watching punk live in the 70’s.

The Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama is situated behind the Manchester Museum, which is located on Oxford Road. It is approximately 1 mile south of the city centre. There are 2 entrances to the building, one on Bridgeford Street, the other on Coupland Street. Please note that there is pedestrian access only to both of these streets. The Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall and the John Thaw Studio Theatre can both be found within the Martin Harris Centre.

Car Parking: Car parking is available in the multistory car park off Booth Street West, opposite the Royal Northen College of Music. Please note that there is no vehicle access to the Martin Harris Centre from either Bridgeford Street or Coupland Street.

There are a range of facilities within the Martin Harris Centre for disabled patrons. The Martin Harris Centre is fully accessible.

There is one manually operated wheelchair available by prior arrangement. Patrons requiring wheelchair access to concerts and events are asked to inform the box office at the time of booking. The box office has a low level counter and there are disabled toilet facilities available on the ground floor. There are parking spaces available for blue badge holders in the multi-story car park. If parking is required closer to the building, this can be arranged in advance. Please contact the box office.
