We have a particularly exciting and diverse programme planned for the autumn season. The Centre is delighted to host to some of the most well respected orchestras and musicians, performers, prize-winning novelists, poets and comedians. The season gets off to an exciting start in August when the Manchester Pride festival presents a series of lunchtime recitals by LGBT composers past and present. Spearheading our music programme for the season ahead once again are the Quatuor Danel who we can rely on to supply spellbinding musicality and breathtaking virtuosity! We welcome Psappha, one of the UK’s leading new music ensembles, who have recently been appointed as The University of Manchester’s Contemporary Ensemble in Residence. This marks a significant development in the long-standing relationship between the two organisations. We also welcome back the popular Creative Writing Literature Live Reading Series featuring many high profile authors, including a visit from Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney in October. Also in October we are pleased to be hosting, drama alumnus, Ade Edmundson and The Bad Shepherds who are renowned for playing punk songs on folk instruments. These are just a few highlights from this season’s exceptional programme. Don’t forget, to keep up to date with the latest news and events at the Martin Harris Centre, visit our website at www.manchester.ac.uk/martinharriscentre. Introducing The Martin Harris Centre
The Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama is a performance space situated at the heart of the oldest part of the University. Kshitij (unlimited horizon)
The Centre incorporates a 350-seat concert hall, a 150-seat studio theatre and an electroacoustic music studio. The foyer makes an immediately striking impact: its use of light, open space and bold areas of colour blend with Alice Kettle’s dynamic textile artwork, Red and Blue Movement in Three. In September we unveil a newly commissioned piece of work between the Drama department and the Centre - Kshitij (unlimited horizon) - by contemporary abstract artist Shameela Hussain.
About the artist: Shameela Hussain is a contemporary abstract artist based in West Yorkshire, UK. Shameela is a graduate from the University of Huddersfield with a BA (honours) degree in Fine Art in 2006 “Art has been my life passion. Since graduating I have continued my practice as an artist working from my studio in West Yorkshire.” Shameela’s roots lie in Asia and her cultural background has a huge impact in her paintings. The vibrancy, the colours, the festive atmosphere and the rich heritage of India and Pakistan influence the approach to her paintings.
350-seat Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall
150-seat John Thaw Studio Theatre
The Centre hosts many musicians, performers and prize-winning authors. It provides an excellent space for contemporary and classic theatre, music and comedy events, and holds a reading series that has in the past featured such literary luminaries as Martin Amis, Will Self, John Banville and Clive James. We also present new and exciting artists who go on to become household names as well as established artists performing to sell-out audiences all over the world.
Within her work colour is an important factor, through the use of colour her aim is to express feelings and emotions. She strongly believes that colour is subjectively Kshitij (unlimited horizon) by Shameela Hussain powerful enough to describe and represent human emotions, forming the ability to visually communicate. The painting was created using washes of colour building up the layers with acrylic paint and gold leaf was used to represent elements of the structure of the building. “My inspiration for creating the painting came from the diverse people who use the building and the influence of music and rhythm within that space.” says Shameela.
So please come along, and discover why the Martin Harris Centre is attracting attention as an important arts venue throughout the North West.
“ The Martin Harris Centre is a fantastic venue which we would highly recommend! Our conference took place in the Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall which is a brilliant space - a good size, excellent acoustics and very versatile. All the centre’s staff are also extremely friendly, helpful and efficient - a joy to work with! “ Charlotte Walker British Red Cross

Manchester University Music Society (MUMS) Each year the music society attracts approximately 500 members from every corner of The University of Manchester - undergraduate, postgraduate and staff. The main priority of the society is to provide its members with a large variety of performing opportunities to suit their standard, commitment and tastes. One of the foremost composers of our time, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies is the patron of the Manchester University Music Society. He has made a significant contribution to musical history through his wide-ranging and prolific output, and was appointed Master of the Queen’s Music in March 2004. MUMS members have had their high standard of music making publicly recognised throughout the world. The flagship Symphony Orchestra is at the heart of the Society, touring Bulgaria in September 2009 and reaching the final of the respected SymphUni competition in April 2008. MUWO, the Manchester University Wind Orchestra, won a gold award at the National Concert Band Festival Final in 2008 and continue to impress audiences with their playing skills. Ad Solem, the University’s official chamber choir, travelled to Poland in January and have performed at wellknown venues in and around Manchester. Estival – Manchester’s Biggest Classical Music Festival – which takes place in the final week of each academic year, is always a great celebration of music, the end of exams and the beginning of summer! The programme will include two new works by advanced composers from the University of Manchester.

Helmut Lachenmann at 75: Inward Beauty
Listening to music by Helmut Lachenmann can be likened to forgetting everything you thought you knew about music and hearing late Beethoven for the first time. His music has been described as some of the most intimate ever written, and his sonic imagination blows wide open preconceptions as to what musical instruments and the human voice are capable of. Come and join us as we celebrate the music of this remarkable composer on the day before his 75th birthday. Lachenmann Student composers Ben McKee

Ade Edmundson & The Bad Shepherds
Adrian Edmondson and The Bad Shepherds (pictured, top right) play punk songs on folk instruments. Not as a gag, but because they really like the noise. They think the songs are better than people remember. They love folk instruments. It works. They do songs by The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Stranglers, The Jam, Sham 69, The Undertones, The Ramones, The Buzzcocks, The Specials, Talking Heads, Squeeze and others, even Kraftwerk! Alright, they’re not all punk, but they come from roughly the same era. They’ve mostly given the songs a kind of Celtic feel, and they’ve stuck in the odd reel and jig here and there. But occasionally they just thrash! They’ve always thought the excitement of a reel taking off is the nearest thing to the excitement of watching punk live in the 70’s.

Rutherford’s Lights: an Adventure in Sound and Science – Edward Cowie Richard Casey - piano
Edward Cowie
Imagine a ‘light show’ in sound! Conjure the possibility of all those black and white keys being transformed into all the colours and effects of a rainbow; of water and light shattering and of making a piano sound iridescent. From start to finish, Rutherford’s Lights is music that does just that and more! This concert forms part of the Manchester Science Festival which is an annual nine-day, multi-venue festival. It is Manchester’s premier event for public engagement with science and engineering, promoting the region’s rich heritage of past scientific achievements and endeavours.

Got an hour to spare? Fancy laughing so much your face will ache? Then get down to this event! Full of fun and antics featuring Kelly J Roberts as your compare, with comedy from Kooky Babooshka, Tim Bradbury and headline act Lewis Costello. Seventeen year old stand-up comic Lewis Costello is Ed Byrne’s support act and a writer on Russell Howard’s Good News. He left his year long tenure on BBC Radio Lancashire to focus on standup and after gigging with comedy legends from Johnny Vegas and Brendon Burns to Simon Munnery and Mark Steel, he began touring his first solo show, ‘Neapolitan Ice Cream’, calling in at the Edinburgh Fringe and the Latitude Festival. Music from Flux Ache. ‘Kelly J Roberts, a confident, brash comedian’, City Life 2009

Kate Walsh – the Brighton based singer songwriter whose unsigned, home-made album ‘Tim’s House’ was an iTunes sensation in 2007 (knocking Take That off the number 1 spot) - recently released her brand new album Light & Dark.
Calling Kate Walsh a singer songwriter is like saying Van Gogh was a cartoonist. Kate is, er, different. A 26-year-old from a sailing town in Essex who’s been likened to Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush and Jane Austen, she’s ferociously independent…in every sense. And when she sits down to write a song you’d better lock up your hearts for you instantly become Kate’s close personal confidante as she bares her soul with shocking candour. Kate Walsh is warm, funny and likeably self-deprecating, fully recognising the self-indulgent nature of the confessional songwriter’s art.
FREE but advance booking is essential. To book your ticket, please contact: • The MHC box office. (there is no booking charge) • Quaytickets. (bookings are subject to a 95p postage charge)
