WELCOME Welcome to the autumn 2014 season at the Martin Harris Centre.

I am pleased to extend a warm welcome to all of our patrons this season, new visitors to the Centre and existing friends alike. You are all extremely welcome, and I am sure you will be as excited as we are when you see the diverse programme on offer. As we head into autumn and the nights draw in, join us for some spectacular performances. There’s something for everyone this season, with events spanning all genres: Classical Music; New Music; Drama; Literature; Dance and Film. Getting the season underway in September, we’re proud to welcome back drama alumnus Rob Ward with his award-winning play Away from Home, (18-19 September) which opened the 24:7 Festival in 2013 and scooped two awards. Festival season is certainly upon us at the Centre! We are thrilled to be hosting events for some of the region’s most reputable festivals: the Manchester Literature Festival (6-19 October) and the Manchester Science Festival (23 October - 2 November). We are also delighted to be hosting many of the events for Sines & Squares Festival, a new music festival (25-26 October). Our resident string quartet, the Quatuor Danel begins its tenth season at the University on 16 October. This season the quartet will enthral us with concerts featuring works by Shostakovich, Haydn, Brahms and Tchaikovsky, in addition to new works by leading composers. The autumn season includes a visit from the acclaimed performance poet John Hegley (4 October). John’s return to the Centre, which coincides with National Poetry Day 2014, will also feature an interactive poetry performance and workshop tailored for schoolchildren. In November we welcome Greg Dyke, chairman of the Football Association who will deliver the Jim Rose Lecture on ‘Tackling Discrimination: football, media and the pursuit of equality’. The ever popular Walter Carroll Lunchtime Concert Series continues with a varied and diverse programme. Lunchtime concerts take place on Thursdays and begin at 1.10pm. The concerts are free and there’s no need to book, so you can just turn up on the day and enjoy the music! These are just a few highlights from this season’s events. For details of the entire programme, please refer to the handy tear-out events guide at the back of this brochure. Tickets for the autumn 2014 season are now on sale and can be purchased by calling the Martin Harris Centre Box Office (weekdays 2-4pm) or online via Quaytickets. On a final note, thank you for your continued patience over the summer months, whilst the Centre’s foyer has undergone building works. The wait was worthwhile as we now have new revolving doors at the Bridgeford Street entrance and additional heating. We hope this will make a noticeable difference to our patrons in the foyer, particularly during the colder months. I do hope you are as pleased with the end result as we are. INTRODUCING THE MARTIN HARRIS CENTRE The Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama is a performance space situated at the heart of The University of Manchester.

The Centre opened in 2003 and is a vibrant and diverse venue. It hosts many musicians, performers and prize-winning authors. The Centre provides an excellent space for contemporary and classic theatre, music and comedy events, and hosts a reading series that has in the past featured such literary luminaries as Jeanette Winterson, Colm Tóibín, Martin Amis, Will Self and John Banville. We also present new and exciting artists who go on to become household names as well as established artists performing to sell-out audiences all over the world.

The foyer at the Martin Harris Centre makes an immediately striking impact: its use of light, open space and bold areas of colour blend with Alice Kettle’s dynamic textile artwork, Red and Blue Movement in Three, which was commissioned in 2004. In March 2011, the Centre was delighted to receive a newly commissioned textile wall hanging also by Alice Kettle; The Birth of Motives in the Clouds. These unique literature events, organised by The University’s Centre for New Writing, bring the best known contemporary writers to Manchester to discuss and read from their work. Everyone is welcome, and tickets include discounts at the Blackwell bookstall and a complimentary drink at our Literature Live wine receptions.

21st Anniversary Season 1994-2014

CNW21 YEARS

Throughout the 2014/2015 season we celebrate the Centre for New Writing’s 21st anniversary. The Centre has come a long way since launching its first creative writing course in 1994, which was set up by poet Michael Schmidt OBE FRSL and novelist Richard Francis. Today, the Centre continues to offer a range of postgraduate courses, including the recent introduction of a new Screenwriting MA programme. The course, pioneered by current Professor of Creative Writing Jeanette Winterson, will begin from September 2015, with television producer and screenwriter Russell T Davies along with playwright and screenwriter Abi Morgan set to be patrons. The 21st anniversary celebrations will continue into 2015. During the second semester of this season’s events we will host a special ‘In Conversation’ event with Michael Schmidt OBE FRSL and Richard Francis. Other events to look out for in spring 2015 will feature Jeanette Winterson, Susan Barker, Denise Riley, Rebecca Perry, Frances Leviston and Susan Stewart. Three times shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, Colm Tóibín is one of the leading English-language writers at work today. Tóibín succeeded Martin Amis as Professor at the Centre for New Writing in 2011 and returns to Manchester now to launch Nora Webster, a major new work which returns to the main character of his bestselling novel Brooklyn.

He will be joined by Sebastian Barry, whose powerful readings have been compared to ‘revivalist meetings’ (The Guardian). Barry’s new novel The Temporary Gentleman also returns to an existing family of stories, re-introducing us to characters from his Costa Prize winner, The Secret Scripture.

Peter Blake Under Milk Wood MLF and the Dylan Thomas 100 are delighted to present a rare in-conversation with the Godfather of Pop Art. A prolific artist known for his beautiful collages, paintings and record sleeves, Sir Peter Blake is also a life-long admirer of Welsh poet and playwright Dylan Thomas. Published to mark the centenary of Dylan Thomas’s birth, Blake’s Under Milk Wood includes an impressive body of work inspired by the characters, locations, narratives and dream sequences of Thomas’s cult radio play. Created over the last three decades, the work includes portraits, watercolours and collages that lovingly imagine Thomas’s fictional village of Llaregubb. This event will be hosted by author and Dylan Thomas expert, Jeff Towns, and will feature projections of Blake’s art.

Martin Amis returns to Manchester, where he was the University’s inaugural Professor of Creative Writing 2007-11, to read from his new novel The Zone of Interest, the follow-up to Lionel Asbo, which Richard Ford described in the Guardian as “Both funny and serious, and (as always with Amis) very very on-the-money”

Nick Laird was writer fellow at the University of Manchester’s Centre for New Writing in 2011. ‘Raw but dignified, lyrical but never fussy’, according to Dave Eggers, Laird has published two novels, while his third collection of poems, Go Giants, was published last year.

Suzannah Dunn and Maria McCann The History Girls The past may be a foreign country, but it’s one we can visit through the transformative journey of the historical novel. Here two masters of the form address the intricacies of recreating past Maria McCann events. Suzannah Dunn’s tautly plotted new novel, Suzannah Dunn The May Bride, reveals a previously unexplored dimension to Jane Seymour, the most beloved of Henry VIII’s wives. The author of four bestselling historical novels, The Daily Telegraph called Dunn “a lyricist of ordinary life and ordinary people transfigured by extreme emotions.” Maria McCann’s forthcoming Ace, King, Knave is a rich novel of power, sex and chance in 1760s London, a city whose genteel civility belies the violence bubbling underneath. McCann’s first novel, As Meat Loves Salt, was described as ‘riveting’ by Lionel Shriver, and she followed it in 2009 with the well-received Wilding.

Alan Gillis is from Belfast, and teaches at The University of Edinburgh. Previously shortlisted for the TS Eliot and the Irish Times/Poetry Now Prizes, Maria Johnston describes his work as “heart-inmouth stuff; high-impact poetry that is not for the faint-hearted.” His fourth book Scapegoat will be published by The Gallery Press in October.

Allen Ginsberg described Tom Pickard as “one of the most live and true poetic voices in Great Britain.” He founded the Morden Tower readings series in Newcastle in 1963 and his Ballad of Jamie Allan (2007), a poetic “life” of the eponymous eighteenth century outlaw, won the National Book Critics Circle Award. His Collected Poems, Hoy Oot, is just out from Carcanet.

Poetry reading with Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams was the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury and the leader of the Anglican Communion around the world. Now, Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge, Williams will read from a collection of his own poetry, ‘The Poems of Rowan Williams’, a compilation of old and new poems including translations of Rilke and of several Welsh poets. Clarinetist Harry Cameron-Penny made his 20 November 2014 Purcell Room and Southbank Centre solo Harry Cameron-Penny Alissa Firsova Price debut as a Park Lane Group Artist to critical FREE acclaim. At 18, Harry was a BBC ‘Classical Star’ finalist and has worked closely with Nigel Kennedy, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Alissa Firsova comes from a distinguished family of Russian composers and won the Guardian Young Composer Competition in 2001. She is also an accomplished pianist, and made her BBC Proms debut in 2009. She joins Harry for a delightful programme including works by Debussy, A. Firsova and Brahms. A recital of French music for solo viola da gamba from the 17th century, by Hotman, de Machy, Dubuisson and Sante-Colombe, with a recent work by Philippe Hersant. The bass viol was the solo instrument of the viol family, and became extremely popular in France during the 17th century, leading to the great flowering of the virtuoso music of Marais and Forqueray in the 18th century. The 17th century composers led the way in creating the French style with charming, beautifully proportioned suites.

QUATUOR DANEL The University of Manchester’s internationally renowned resident string quartet. The Quatuor Danel’s tenth season at the University features eight quartets by Shostakovich, alongside beloved Austro-German favourites by Haydn, Schubert, Schumann and Brahms, passionate masterpieces from Eastern Europe by Borodin, Tchaikovsky, Smetana, Janáček and Enescu, and new works by leading composers from France and Taiwan as well as the University’s own Camden Reeves. The Quatuor Danel’s tenth year at the University opens with a reminder of the infancy of the string quartet medium from Haydn’s first opus, composed in 1762, followed by the first of eight Shostakovich quartets in the season – a profound and stirring Soviet masterpiece featuring a blistering furioso Scherzo. NEW MUSIC Sines & Squares Festival Analogue Electronics and Modular Synthesis “Sines & Squares” is one of UK’s first festivals and concert series celebrating the recent resurgence of analogue and modular synthesizers. It will feature some of the most renown UK and international performers, composers, lecturers and designers working with Buchla, Serge, Eurorack, Hordijk and EMS modular systems. A novel workshop from Tom Bugs of Bugbrand will introduce attendees to how to build their own analogue synthesizer/processor. The event will feature concerts of live modular free improvisation, fixed media compositions rooted in modular synthesis, theoretical “patchbay sessions” with papers and presentations focused on modular synthesis.

“New and Selected Potatoes” To celebrate his French roots and the early music tradition of the University’s music undergraduates, poet and performer John Hegley will perform pieces inspired by the grumpy, but brilliant Baroque composer and theorist Jean-Philippe Rameau. Hungry: A play about food, nutrition and obesity Food and the way we produce food are at the heart of the social, environmental issues and health challenges we face today. There is a global nutrition crisis with a dual problem of hunger and obesity. There is an increasing recognition that what and how people eat is intrinsically linked to factors such as poverty and wellbeing. Hungry by Sarah Daniels is a filmed performance of Y Touring Theatre Company’s most recent play. It is a contemporary drama with humour, which tells the story of two very different UK families whose lives are interlinked, exploring the themes of under nutrition, diabetes, obesity and the recent debate around sugary drinks. Susanna is a lawyer in the process of making a fortune representing a global fizzy drinks company, whilst Ruby is her cleaner whose family depends on food banks. Sarah Daniels is a popular and critically acclaimed writer and has had two collections of her plays published by Methuen. There will be a Q & A session with the play’s director Nigel Townsend and others after the performance to discuss the issues raised. Jim Rose Lecture with Greg Dyke (Chairman of the Football Association)

The annual Jim Rose Lecture is an evening devoted to the work and memory of Jim Rose, co-founder of the Runnymede Trust in 1968. From then until his death in 1999, Jim Rose’s contribution and devotion to racial justice and civil rights was unwavering and unbroken. The Runnymede Trust established the Jim Rose Lecture to mark his enduring legacy and to continue the struggle for racial justice. This year’s Jim Rose Lecture is titled ‘Tackling Discrimination: football, media and the pursuit of equality’ and will be delivered by Football Association Chairman Greg Dyke. About the speaker: Greg Dyke became the Independent Chairman of The Football Association in July 2013. He enjoyed a long and distinguished career in journalism and broadcasting, most notably rising to become Director General of the BBC having also been Managing Director of London Weekend Television and Chairman of ITV Sport. He is also Chairman of both the British Film Institute and Europe’s largest theatre group, ATG. The event has been organised by The Runnymede Trust in collaboration with the School of Social Sciences at the University of Manchester. There are a range of facilities within the Martin Harris Centre for disabled patrons. The Martin Harris Centre is fully accessible.

Booking tickets Tickets for our events can be purchased directly from the Martin Harris Centre box office during opening times. Tickets purchased in this way are not subject to either a booking fee or a postage fee. Alternatively tickets can be purchased from the Centre’s sales agent Quaytickets. Please note that tickets bought from Quaytickets will be subject to a booking fee and also a non-refundable postage fee. The booking fee charged by Quaytickets is 10% of the face value of the ticket (minimum £1.25 per ticket). • Tickets can be ordered in advance from the box office in person, by telephone or by post, and can be paid for by cheque or debit/credit card. Please make cheques payable to ‘The University of Manchester’. • The box office will only hold unpaid for tickets for up to 4 working days from the time of booking. Unpaid tickets cannot be reserved on the 4 days preceding a performance or event.

Café Arts based in the foyer of the Martin Harris Centre, serves coffee, teas, cold drinks and light refreshments. The café is open from 9.00am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday and is also open for weekend and evening events. To save time during the interval you can preorder your drinks at Café Arts. Adopt-a-Seat If you enjoy our concerts why not Adopt-a-Seat? You can adopt your favourite seat in your name, or seats named for family and friends, to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, to commemorate a graduation or other milestone, or as a way of remembering a departed loved one. Some seats have already been adopted in this way, others to acknowledge favourite composers. The choice is yours. Terms and Conditions Tickets are sold subject to the right of the Management to change performers and/ or programme content due to unforeseen circumstances. All content of this document is correct at the time of going to press, however, we reserve the right to make such changes without notice if necessary. Credit card payments may be taken over the telephone. University policy dictates that we cannot accept credit card details by email or post. We regret that we can not exchange or refund tickets. All ticket exchanges are at the discretion of the Front of House Manager. Please examine your tickets at the time of purchase to ensure that all details are correct. When processing your booking, Box Office staff will ask for your contact details. This information may be used to keep you informed of forthcoming events at the Martin Harris Centre with your agreement.
