QUATUOR DANEL The University of Manchester’s internationally renowned resident string quartet.
Season 2016-2017
Amazing classical music concert. Quatuor Danel plays all of this music magnificently. David Hurwitz, Classics Today
QUATUOR DANEL The University of Manchester’s internationally renowned resident string quartet.
Season 2016-2017 Manchester’s most adventurous chamber music season – the Quatuor Danel’s twelfth at the University – offers a feast for lovers of Beethoven and contemporary music. The Quartet teams up with Psappha for Harrison Birtwistle’s colossal and rarely performed Pulse Shadows, together with three pieces by American minimalist Morton Feldman. Passionate renewals of the medium from the University’s own Camden Reeves and Philip Grange measure up against five Beethoven quartets, themselves programmed alongside such emulators as Eisler, Lekeu, Shostakovich and Tanaka, and the spectacular Piano Quintet by Sergey Taneyev. And there’s still room for Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Dvořák, Fauré and the Danels’ perennial favourite, Weinberg… All concerts take place in the Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall. The Thursday lunchtime concerts are part of the Walter Carroll Lunchtime Concert Series, which is supported by the Ida Carroll Trust.
Lunchtime Concert Hanns Eisler Beethoven
String Quartet (1938) Quartet in E flat, Op. 74 (‘The Harp’)
Two quartets composed under fraught circumstances: Hanns Eisler’s tragic two-movement Quartet immediately reflects the tensions of pre-war fascism, while Beethoven’s masterful ‘Harp’ Quartet reacts with transcendent radiance to the French invasion of Vienna. Followed at 2.30pm by Quatuor Danel Seminar: ‘Open Season’. The Quatuor Danel and Prof. David Fanning introduce the 2016-17 repertoire, with thoughts on programme-planning and performance issues.
Evening Concert Camden Reeves Tchaikovsky
Quartet No. 3 (2015) Quartet No. 3 in E flat minor, Op. 30
Venue Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall Time & Date 1.10pm, Thursday 6 October 2016 Price FREE
Venue Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall
Two third quartets, each 40 minutes long, but from different worlds: Camden Reeves’s virtuosic exploration of time and chaos, juxtaposed with Tchaikovsky’s sorrowful memorial for his violinist colleague at the Moscow Conservatoire, Ferdinand Laub.
Time & Date 7.30pm, Friday 7 October 2016
Lunchtime Concert
Venue Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall
Shostakovich Beethoven
Quartet No. 11 in F minor, Op. 122 Quartet in F minor, Op. 95 (‘Quartetto serioso’)
Two highly compressed quartets in a key ideally suited to dark, oppressive moods: Shostakovich’s cryptic seven-movement Eleventh precedes the most concentrated of Beethoven’s middle-period quartets, which ultimately finds its way to hard-won victory. Followed at 2.30pm by Quatuor Danel Seminar: ‘Masters of Composition 1’. The University’s MusM composers showcase their compositional etudes.

Quatuor Danel
Evening Concert with Richard Whalley (piano) Dvořák Philip Grange Fauré
Quartet No. 12 in F major, Op. 96 (‘American’) Ghosts of Great Violence Piano Quintet No. 2 in C minor, Op. 115
Philip Grange’s searing elegy for the victims of the Battle of the Somme (which ended on 18 November 1916) is framed by the sunniest of all string quartets and a lively yet autumnal piano quintet in which the Danels are joined by the University’s composer/pianist Richard Whalley.
Lunchtime Concert with Michelle Assay (piano) Mozart Nicolas Bacri Mozart Schnittke
Sonata for Violin and Piano in E minor, K. 304 Sonata Breve, for Solo Violin, Op. 45 (‘Sonatina in omaggio a Mozart’) Duo for Violin and Viola in G, K. 423 ‘Moz-art’ for Two Violins, after Mozart K. 416d
Members of the Quatuor Danel, joined by pianist Michelle Assay, in a programme of Mozart and his distant admirers: two of his most genial chamber works, followed by hommages from a prolific Frenchman and from the Russian often considered the true heir to Shostakovich.

Evening Concert Weinberg Beethoven
Quartet No. 4 in E flat, Op. 20 Quartet in E flat, Op. 127
Two imposing quartets in E flat: Weinberg’s breakthrough to full maturity with a work of classical symphonic proportions, and Beethoven’s return to quartet writing after a 14-year break, inaugurating the great series of what we now know as his ‘late’ quartets.

Lunchtime Concert Karen Tanaka Beethoven
‘At the Grave of Beethoven’ (1999) Quartet in D, Op. 18 No. 3
Though numbered third, Beethoven’s D major quartet was in fact the first he had composed. Its arch-shaped opening bars in turn form the basis for the tribute by Japanese composer Karen Tanaka, written in 1999 for the bicentenary of Beethoven’s Op. 18. Please note that there will not be a public workshop following this lunchtime concert.

Venue Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall
The Quatuor Danel teams up with the University’s ensemble-in-residence for Birtwistle’s contemporary classic – nine settings of the poetry of Paul Celan interwoven with nine movements for quartet – preceded by the quietest American music that helped Birtwistle discover his voice.
Time & Date 7.30pm, Friday 10 March 2017
Lunchtime Concert
Venue Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall
Lekeu Beethoven
‘Molto adagio’ Quartet in E flat, Op. 18, No. 6
The most adventurous of Beethoven’s early quartets is famous for its finale introduction, entitled ‘La Malinconia’; what better pairing, then, than Guillaume Lekeu’s 1887 quartet movement inspired by the Biblical text: ‘My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death’? Followed at 2.30pm by Quatuor Danel Seminar: ‘Doctors and Philosophers of Composition’. A workshop of new music by the University’s doctoral students.
Evening Concert with David Fanning (piano) Beethoven Taneyev
Quartet in F, Op. 59 No. 1 (‘Razumovsky’) Piano Quintet in G minor, Op. 25
The first of Beethoven’s three mid-period quartets for the Russian ambassador in Vienna, with a Russian folk-theme ingeniously worked into the finale; and the mightiest of Russian piano quintets, emulating Beethoven and Brahms, with David Fanning in the daunting piano part.
