olidays will be soon! Winter sports are upon us. Vacations just around the corner. We wish you and your family a wonderful holiday this year. We are dedicating this issue to our paper’s mascot, Luna. She passed away some weeks ago unexpectedly and we will miss her dearly. She was a very sweet dog, and we were happy to share her with our visits to schools and around town. Best to you all. Be good to yourself, your family and friends. We all have a lot to be grateful about. Be in touch!

ELF BULLETIN

by Betty Quiqley

H

eadline—“Child Selects New Toys Over Cardboard Box! This is good news for all of you “would-be elves out there! Have you ever wondered why children are so intrigued with the gift box and why they abandon the new shiny toy quickly in favor of a cardboard world? It is a question that is of interest to many an elf! It appears that the answer lies deeply entrenched in the possibilities. A toy that springs out of the container and opens the floodgate to endless creativity, imagination and play is more likely to withstand the timeless test of toy verses box. Interest, intrigue and versatility are other characteristics that help make a toy a contender in the hours-of-fun category. A toy that rises above the crowd is likely to be adaptable and able to support a child’s changing interests and learning style.

This holiday season, select toys that offer young children a variety of experiences wrapped into one package. The Pyramid of Play toy by Hape has nesting, stacking and sorting practice activities that can be presented one at a time or as a whole. Don’t overlook versatile toys like Count and Match from Battat or the new games Day and Night or Trucky 3 by Smart Games. These may look simple at first glance but actually offer opportunities to stack, count, match color, strings and create patterns and are adaptable to many learning styles. Little ones also enjoy toys that demonstrate cause and effect, like the Kidoozie Super Spiral

Come ride the hand-carved musical menagerie in Nederland. Great place for Parties!

Play Tower. You will be amazed as your children use their remarkable sense of wonder to connect actions to outcomes. Eyes will light up when the surprise of magnetism comes to life with Imaginets by MindWare and SmartMax construction by Smart Games. Both give a child a chance to explore the world around them while creating images and designs of the imagination. Fine-motor skill development, eye-hand coordination, vocabulary extension skills and a whole lot of just plain fun will also come from manipulation and expression with these childsize toys. The award-winning Magformers, motorized Erector Sets, ever-changing Q-BA-Maze marble runs, intriguing Snap Circuits by

Elenco, or the all-new Wud Works will stimulate the mind and generate excitement way beyond the day the present is opened!

The possibilities for play, learning, laughter, exploration, experimenting, creating and pretending are endless for an older child. The cardboard box can become a pirate ship or a beautiful castle by adding a few bits of string or tape. Toys designed to capture the attention of this age group will do the same. In fact, the kid-friendly nails, fasteners, hinges and more from Makedo reusable system are designed for kids to make just about anything from stuff found around the house. Madam Alexander are sure fill your child with whimsical moments and playful activity.

Projects like Duct Tape Bangles by Alex, Make-A Plate by Makit, Lap Loom from Harrisville Designs or the kid-size, real woodworking tools and kits by Red Box will give children a chance to create great things for themselves or fantastic gifts for

others. BIOPHILIA

Drawing by Kara Priest

by Dr. Oakleigh Thorne, II

I

want to tell you about a new word for you to learn. It’s “biophilia.” What does it mean? It is simply the idea that you are not normal unless you have regular contact with nature. You might say “of course… what’s the big deal?” The big deal is that more and more children grow up attached to computers and computer games, ipods, TV, and all kinds of indoor “techno” activities, so they have almost no contact with nature whatsoever! Richard Louv in his book Last Child in the Woods calls this condition “NND: nature deficit disorder,” or lack of contact with nature. I agree with him that this is a seri•

ous problem. His slogan is “leave no child inside!” Get them outside to play in and have direct contact with nature. I have written before about the fact that when I was a boy I was lucky to live in the country surrounded by many acres of woods, meadows, streams, and even a lake. I was indeed a “nature boy.” It helped me develop sharp powers of observation. I learned how to see, hear, smell, taste, and feel everything about the natural world. I found toads and turtles, caught fireflies, tasted wintergreen berries, felt and smelled moist moss, saw

beautiful sunsets, listened to bird songs, and found their nests. This gave me a very special sensitivity that I otherwise would not have had. As Louv points out, with many children who have been identified with such problems as ADD, ADHD, or mild autism, these symptoms often disappear completely when kids are allowed to play outside in nature. Nature has all sorts of special healing qualities. Boulder County has many opportunities to experience nature: from neighborhood parks, to open spaces, to vast wilderness areas. We should appreciate and enjoy all that we have near and around us here. The famous biologist, E. O. Wilson of Harvard and my friend Stephen Kellert of Yale edited an entire book called Biophilia. More recently Kellert and Louv have written about biophilic design. This is a very important concept. It points out that we need to bring nature much more into all our urban and suburban architecture and development. Wherever we live, we need to bring nature closer to us in as many ways

as possible. Instead of a big manicured lawn, we can plant trees, bushes, shrubs, and wild plants that attract birds and other wildlife. At our Thorne Nature Experience headquarters in east Boulder, we are surrounded by native bushes and trees. We look out at Sombrero Marsh, a natural wetland. Right next to our building, we even have a “mini-wetland” that was donated to us by Mike Woods. It has a pump that circulates water, so that we have a waterfall and a small stream that feeds into a pond the size of a big dining room table. We have planted and allowed bulrushes, cattails, and other wild plants to grow in and around the pond. Its bottom is rich with decayed vegetation that has allowed a whole variety of insects to live, such as dragonfly and damselfly nymphs, water beetles, and back-swimmer bugs. This is indeed biophilic design! So you’ve learned a new word and all about it. From now on, always be aware of how important nature is to you!

Dr. Thorne is founder and honorary president of Thorne Nature Experience (formerly Thorne Ecological Institute) in Boulder. They have helped “connect youth to nature” for 58 years. For information about their classes for kids, please check www.thornenature.org or e-mail info@thornenature.org or call (303) 499-3647.

The Importance of Education

B

...or your kids may never move out

by J. J. Martin

arack Obama and Mitt Romney may seem to disagree on most things, but they do agree one important issue. Education is important. Recent studies show that the education level that one achieves has a direct correlation to income. Most parents want to see their children prosper and take care of themselves when they are old enough. Making sure that your children get the most out of our education system takes some planning and thought these days. Doing well in school can certainly help with a leg up on scholarships and financial aid along with educational opportunities. With the rising expense of college, many

students are going to community colleges for the first two years to transfer credits for a much lower cost. The debt load on parents and students these days can be overwhelming and there is nothing that says it won’t get worse.

Saving early can make all the difference in the world in paying for an education. Also, spending money on tutoring can be a good investment to up your grades. According to the online blog at Fundmasteryblog. com, from 1993 to 2008,

“Those who did not finish high school have an unemployment rate of 8.1%. Yikes. That is tough. High school graduates have 4.7% unemployment, which is quite a bit lower, but college graduates only have 2.3% unemployment.” We are not as bad off as many other countries. Greece has 25% unemployment, and Spain has 24%. Many Eastern European and African countries have much higher rates than that. Some of the best rates are in Vietnam, Cambodia and Singapore. Switzerland looks like the best of the European countries running at 2.8% unemployment but to move there you have to have a lot of cash in the bank or a pro-

Connecting America through Coins

by Steve Carr

C

onnecting America through Coins. The year 2012 marks several major milestones in the history of American money! We celebrate our coinage and currency and the part they played in Making American History.

The United States Mint was established by an Act of Congress on April 2, 1792. Congressional legislation creates a national mint “at the seat of the government of the United States,” and

regulates coinage. It authorizes the Mint to make coins of gold (Eagles, Half Eagles and Quarter Eagles), silver (Dollars, Half Dollars, Quarter Dollars, Dimes, and Half Dimes), and copper

(Cents and Half Cents). The Act also authorizes the president to construct buildings in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Mint was the first federal building erected under the Constitution.

August 29, 2012, marked the sesquicentennial anniversary of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP). Since 1862, the BEP has been entrusted with the mission of manufacturing the nation’s currency. They have established a remarkable legacy of pride, craftsmanship, and innovation over the past 150 years, making this organization the premier leader in banknote production. The BEP has achieved significant milestones in currency design and production most recently with the integration of color and cuttingedge security technology. Today, the BEP develops and produces currency notes that are trusted and used worldwide. There are more than 1 trillion notes in circulation, two-thirds of which are overseas.

As part of this celebration, the United States Mint and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing—the sole producers of our Nation’s legal tender coins and paper currency—have collaborated to offer the Making American History Coin and Currency Set. The set, which marks the United States Mint’s 220th anniversary and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing’s 150th anniversary, includes one 2012 American Eagle Silver Proof Coin and one Series 2009 $5 note. The 2012 American Eagle Silver Proof Coin honors the artistry and design of our nation’s coins and the heritage of coin production at the United States Mint at San Francisco. It bears the “S” mint mark, representing its minting at the United States Mint at San Francisco. The Series 2009 $5 note commemorates the Bureau of Engraving and Printing’s century-and-a-half of service with a serial number beginning with “150.”

US Mint Tours

The United States Denver Mint offers tours. Touring the United States Mint is a fascinating experience for those of all ages and one that will be remembered for a lifetime. Tours cover both the present state of coin manufacturing as well as the history of the Mint. You can learn about the craftsmanship required at all stages of the minting process, from the original designs and sculptures to the actual striking of the coins.

Fun Facts

1. “Clipping is not just an offense in football... Before coins were made by machines, they weren’t perfectly round. They also didn’t have reeded (grooved) edges. This made it easy for people to shave off pieces of precious metal. After “clipping a coin this way, people then illegally spent the coin for its original value. Some people were even put to death for this crime in 17th-century London.

2. Five-cent coins minted from 1942 to 1945 aren’t nickels... Why? Because they don’t have any nickel in them! During that time, the United States Mint used a special wartime alloy instead—copper (56%), silver (35%), and manganese (9%). That way all the saved nickel could be used in the war effort.

4. Rain or shine, you can visit the Philadelphia Mint. That wasn’t always true... Back in 1825, you couldn’t visit when it was raining. The following is from the official rules and regulations that were adopted that year: “Visitors may be admitted by permission of an officer to see the various operations of the Mint on all working days except Saturdays and rainy days. 5. Nickels, dimes, and quarters are pickled before they’re minted...It might sound strange, but the blanks used to make these coins really are pickled. They’re not soaked in vinegar, though, like the pickled cucumbers you get on hamburgers. Instead, these copper-nickel blanks are soaked in a special chemical solution. This “pickling washes and polishes the blanks. To obtain more information, contact or stop by Boulder Valley Credit Union. There is no cost, no obligation, and the benefits can be invaluable. 3. The whole country makes money when the Mint makes money...Why? The answer is “seigniorage—the difference between the cost of making a coin and its face value. (For example, it costs only a few cents to make a quarter, yet its face value is 25 cents.) This profit runs the Mint and puts extra funds into the country’s Treasury— funds then spent on education, health care, defense, and other services for the nation.

ello, my name is Isabella Martinez. As we move into winter, the air becomes crisper, and the days begin to get shorter. Many crops have withered and have done their duty for the year. A few vegetables, like winter squash, pumpkins, and garlic thrive in the garden. Winter is the perfect time for relaxing with a warm cup of tea and reading wonderful written words. As I write this article, I enjoy a cup of mint tea from leaves of beauty that I had collected over the summer along with a cup of warming squash soup. Crops provide food for us, and they all come in such beautiful shapes and sizes. To remember the crops during the winter, I write about them, creating a garden of words. There are many creative types of writing styles. A simple poem that

can be very vivid in one’s eyes is called a haiku. This type of poem originated in Japan. These can be written easily. Haikus can be written many ways, but the most common one follows a five syllable, 7 syllable, and 5 syllable pattern. In the winter, along with resting and reading, it is very important to be active. There are so many fun activities to do. In Boulder, we are especially lucky because we have the mountains. I love to ice-skate, ski, snowshoe, and of course, to sled. Being active helps one to be healthy and fit. Exercising is always good, but be sure to stop life sometimes and appreciate the

To stay healthy, make sure to wash your hands frequently, especially after you are out in places with many people. A humidifier is also good to have in your house because winters in Colorado can be extremely dry. Moisturizer is another way to help hydrate your body. I hope that each of you has a wonderful winter with words of beauty and warmth.

oundaries form that invisible line where one person ends and another begins. They are ever-shifting. Sometimes people dance close to one another, and then they drift apart as the natural course of life. When a child is conceived, the child is the result of the union of two people coming together. As it develops in utero, it is part of its mother. When it is born, it is dependent on its parents and others for survival, yet it is a distinct and separate being. As parents, it is hard for some of us to see our children as distinct and separate beings. We see them as reflections of ourselves. We are attached to giving them the best possible lives that we can. Yet, there are so many parts of their being that are beyond our control. The sooner we realize that, the more healthy a sense of self and interdependence our children can have. We sometimes think we know more about what is right for them, what they like and dislike, and how they are than they do, and some of us even try to anticipate and meet their needs beyond the point when they can do so for themselves. Yes, we have more life experience and know more facts about life than they do, but they are the ultimate authority on themselves and the ones responsible for figuring out how to live their own best lives. So many times, I hear par-

ents talk for their children, as though their kids are invisible, or I watch as adults ask parents how their kids are—even when the kids are there and can speak for themselves. It happens in doctors’ offices, in social situations, at schools. I am blown away, when I see this very small way that a child is not being seen and honored as a separate being having innate wisdom and abilities. You may wonder, so what? The so what of it is that our kids end up not knowing their limits, what is right or wrong for them, or their own truths. We teach them that others know more about who and how they are than they do and that in certain situations where they are older or more experienced they could possibly know more about the who and how of others. In other words, they have poor boundaries. This can lead to poor self-esteem and an erosion of their self-knowing, selftrust and intuition. They will pay more attention on pleasing others and taking care of others than taking care of themselves. In this way, they can end up becoming very susceptible to peer pressure, because, after all, in essence, we have taught them that others know them and what is best for them more than they do, and that they need to anticipate and take care of the needs of those they care about.

Another “so what” is that we can lose ourselves in our kids. We can easily become enmeshed in their lives— parents whose well-being becomes directly linked to how their children do. This is a huge misplaced responsibility to thrust on a child. As parents, it is our responsibility to live full lives and get fulfillment in activities that are meaningful beyond our children. It is our children’s responsibilities to develop into healthy, happy, strong members of the community who take care of themselves and make positive contributions to society by finding what is meaningful and fulfilling for themselves. If you notice that you sometimes slip into this blurred boundary place, it is not the end of the world. You can pause and begin to focus on getting to know yourself more and then getting to know your child and what gets your child excited and

engaged. This can take the form of dialogue or quietly sitting in each other’s company and observing. As you learn, foster the individuality by participating in activities that are interesting to you, to your child, and jointly to your family. You don’t have to drag your child to your activities or force yourself to go to theirs. You can make it a choice to show interest in each other. You can find activities where your interests meet and spend time on those. You can allow your child to have his opinions, as antithetical as they might be to what you believe, by showing a curiosity and interest in how they came to their opinion. Who knows, you may learn something new while having the added bonus of getting to really know your child. Title:

The Captain’s Daughter

Author: Alexander Pushkin Published: 1836 Ages: 12 and up Price: $12.50+ shipping (Amazon.com)

Avery’s Avid-Reader Corner Review by Avery Katz, age 15

Summary: In the story, The Captain’s Daughter, by Alexander Pushkin, the story of a young man named Pyotr is told. Pyotr is a teenager

living in Russia during the late 1880s. Once he turns 17, his father decides that it is time for him to join the country’s military and sends a letter to the Russian army, recommending that he serve at the Belogorsky Fortress under Captain Ivan Mironov, the man who trained Pyotr’s father many years before. Then, just days later, Pyotr’s journey begins. He sets off with his servant, Saveylich, and with his eyes set on the horizon, Pyotr has high hopes for the future. But they don’t last for long. On the way to Belogorsky Fortress, Pyotr and his servant are trapped in a blizzard and come very close to dying from cold temperatures and starvation. However, they are saved by a local guide who makes sure they find their way to the nearest inn and come out of the experience unharmed. Following this, Pyotr finally arrives at the Belogorsky Fortress, and from this point on the book is full of nonstop action. Pyotr has his camp taken over by rebels, is nearly put to death twice, meets the woman of his dreams, and in one of the most intense scenes of the book, is interrogated by the imperial Russian army. The only question left is, after all these near-death experiences, is Pyotr able to come out of it all alive?

What I liked About the Book:

One of the reasons that I like this book is because I respected the author for writing it. During the time period when this book was written, there were sensors within the country of Russia whose job was to read literature and if it in any way suggested rebellion against the current government or contained ideas that the government found to be negative, the author could face severe penalties or in some cases even be put to death. However, Pushkin didn’t care, he risked his life in order to ensure that his ideas would get put out there through the story.

KIDs’ Health

Boosting Your Kids’ Immunity for Winter

H

by JoHannah Reilly, ND, LAc

ere are great ways to strengthen your child’s immune system and prevent them from catching every cold and flu that goes around the classroom or playgroup. When they do get sick, we can help our kids be so healthy that they can fight off these bugs quickly and efficiently. Three broad categories can help parents to model a lifestyle that includes healthy habits, good nutrition, and immuneboosting supplements.

HEALTHY HABITS

S l e e p — Yo u r i m m u n e system works when you are sleeping. Recently my eightyear-old daughter, Eleanor, had a fever, and she slept for 13 hours. Her fever broke, and she woke up feeling great. When children are sick, they need to lie down and rest, even if they don’t sleep, laying low with quiet activities or bed rest is a great way to allow the immune system to do its job. Getting to bed early and sleeping in when they are sick is crucial to their recovery. Developing a good sleep routine for your children ensures that they get the rest they need to grow strong bodies and minds. Babies and toddlers need a good 12 hours of sleep, grade school children need 10 to 12 hours of sleep, and teens need 8 to

10 hours, or maybe 12! Our busy lives keep us up late at night and up early in the morning. I know that I start putting my daughter to bed well before I expect her to fall asleep. We need time to get into pajamas, talk about our day or about plans for the next day- without getting too excited, brush teeth and potty, read our book, and then settle down to sleep with a lullaby. This takes time, and this ritual has been one of the highlights for me as a parent. I love to recount the day and hear what was special for her and have that quiet time. I have heard that this will change as she gets older, but I hope it doesn’t change too soon. Basic Hygiene—Reducing the exposure to germs by sneezing into the elbow is something Eleanor learned in preschool. Fantastic. Now I do that when I sneeze, too. Washing their hands washes germs away, especially when children are touching things in public like grocery carts, doorknobs, and every imaginable surface. Telling your child to avoid sharing water bottles with friends and keeping those fingers out of their mouth is important, too. It can be a simple conversation to explain this to your child, even if you have to repeat it frequently. C o v e r u p — We a r i n g appropriate clothes for the weather can be tricky

Page 20 • Bouldercountykids.com

in Colorado, where it can be cold in the morning and warm in the afternoon. I encourage kids to wear warm clothes, a hat, and coats when it is chilly. Eleanor likes to pack shorts and a lighter shirt for later in the day if it gets warm enough. That works for me, and she can be more comfortable throughout the day. During the winter, I frequently see young people walking to school on cold mornings without a coat on. I am always shocked. They may be warm later in the day, but I doubt they are warm on that morning walk. Protecting the body from cold, wet weather and from the wind is the first line of immune defense. Don’t Cover up Feelings—Setting aside time to really talk to your children in a safe and open environment is important for a healthy body and mind. Children of all ages need to talk about their feelings, about how they are doing in school, about what happened on the playground, about their friends, or about a bully. Our kids don’t want to disappoint us. They want us to think that they are OK. Providing time to really let them talk and really listening to their concerns, comments, jokes, and stories is powerful medicine.

GOOD NUTRITION

Food—Nutrition is a huge subject, which I will address

briefly here. The food we eat and serve our children can affect every aspect of their well-being and has major importance for their immune systems. Some clear ways to approach a healthy diet can be addressed in a nutshell— FIRST of all, don’t feed your children too many sweets, refined, or processed foods. These foods cause low blood sugar, reducing your child’s focus and compromising their immune system by the loss of important minerals. Emphasize healthy whole foods that have more nutritional value. SECONDLY, be sure to provide plenty of protein in their meals. Proteins promote the growth of the immune system. THIRDLY, be sure to provide plenty of colorful fruits and vegetables. These foods are full of vitamins and minerals. Fluids—We are over 70% water, and keeping hydrated is the mantra in Colorado with our high altitude and dry climate. I gauge how hydrated Eleanor is by keeping an eye on her lips. When they look dry or start looking chapped, I know that she has not been drinking enough water, even though she takes her water bottle to school, playdates, and so on. You can check your own level of hydration by pinching the skin on the back of your hand. If it goes right back into place you are good, if it stays pinched or is slow to go back, you are dehydrated. Drinking water is important, but adding electrolytes to our kids’ drinks allows their bodiesto better hold on to that fluid. Electrolyte drinks and powders that you add to drinks are readily available. You can also just add a

splash of juice to their class of water, or in a pinch, add a pinch of salt.

CLASSIC IMMUNE SUPPLEMENTS

Vitamin C—Nobel Prize winner Dr. Linus Pauling, did the early research on vitamin C and was a huge proponent of supplementing with this water-soluble vitamin. He initially suggested that adults take 3 grams (3000 milligrams) per day and later decided that adults should take 6 grams a day. That may sound like a lot to take, but humans are one of the only mammals, along with guinea pigs, that do not produce vitamin C in their own body. Vitamin C helps the immune system, increases interferon production, supports the adrenal glands, strengthens tissue, improves the absorption of iron, and is a potent antioxidant. The adult body can only absorb 1 gram an hour, so parents, don’t take more than 1 gram at a time. To discover your tolerance level for vitamin C, increase your dose 1 gram a day until you get loose stool, then cut back 1 gram, and you should be at the level your body functions best. You can see how children tolerate vitamin C by starting with very small doses. Try 50 mgs, 100 mgs, or 500 mgs (1/2 gram), depending on their size and age. If 50 mgs causes loose stool, wait a few days for normal stool then try 25 mgs and see how they tolerate that dose. Finding a dose that works for your child will greatly improve their immune status. Vitamin C is also available in citrus fruit. Vitamin A—Finding a good multiple for children that has vitamin A should cover their need for this fat soluble vitamin, which is found in various meats and cod liver oil. The water-soluble form is beta-caroteen and can be found in carrots and

BOULDER County Kids

other vegetables. The watersoluble form is converted in the body to the fat-soluble form that we know as vitamin A. It is good for the mucus membranes–the tissue that lines the sinuses and lungs the mouth and digestive tract. The mouth and nose are the first line of defense against germs and viruses entering the body. Vitamin A also supports liver function and is especially important for healthy eyes. Zinc—This mineral is relatively hard to get from food sources—with the highest concentration of zinc in oysters and walnuts. Giving your child a multiple vitamin with zinc should cover their requirement for it. You can us zinc lozenges to bump up their sinc level when children are sick. Zinc is crucial for a healthy immune system, to make growth hormone, ensure proper liver and adrenal gland function, and for men, zinc nourishes the prostate gland. In conclusion, a lot of what I have said about improving the immune system is common sense. Don’t let your children stand in the cold rain without a raincoat. Put your children to bed at a reasonable time. Feed them healthy food and engage them in conversations about their feelings. Sometimes we just need a reminder, and certainly our children do. WHAT DO I DO NOW, ROMONA? Romona Scholder, M.A., RNCS Psychotherapist

Q

. How do I know if my family is happy? Is there any way to measure happiness?

Signed curious father.

A

. Years ago I taught in a school of nursing here in Santa Fe. One of my courses was titled Mental Health in Nursing. We had only a couple of psychiatrists in town at that time and the most recent arrival was Dr. John from the Jung Institute in San Francisco. I asked him to speak to my students about mental health issues, such as happiness, and he told them, “Life is not happy. Life is a series of happy moments, and mental health is the ability to enjoy them when they come along.” There seems to be an increasing feeling in our society that full-time, all-encompassing happiness is desirable and in fact our right. In our constitution, we are guaranteed the right to pursue happiness, not that we achieve it. But how can you tell if your family is happy, and is the happiness of the right sort? Is it simply because they talked you into buying them the latest electronic or shoes, or whatever? Perhaps

that is the most important part of this question. What is the right sort of happiness in our world at this time? There is no completely correct answer, but it’s a question we should all be asking ourselves. The closeness of a family is one of life’s great gifts. Is your family close? Do they enjoy one another and are they there for one another, in time of need? I think that the ability to relate is essential for happiness within a family and later for children with families of their own. But as I’ve said, it all depends on the way you measure happiness, money, love, or shoes?

Q

. My 13-year-old daughter has been wearing too much makeup at school. Even her friends are commenting that it is too much. Is this a sign of low self-esteem?

Signed concerned mother.

A

. Sometimes I think that the majority of teenaged girls suffer from low self-esteem. Hormones are changing, skin is oily and prone to pimples, and worse. Girls can hide behind makeup as though it were a mask. At the same time, it’s a sign of being grown-up in adolescence. I realize that your daughter is wearing too much makeup, but please don’t overreact. It might make matters worse. Perhaps a visit to a department store she likes, where she could have a makeover with someone young and hip? That might give her instruc-

Page 22 • Bouldercountykids.com

tion in a more appropriate makeup regime. In addition, you could address the problem of low self-esteem. I know that I must sound like a broken record, but there’s always therapy. Therapy is not always about illness but can address issues of self-understanding and personal growth. A younger therapist might be especially appropriate. Encourage her in the personal pursuits that interest her. Who knows? She might become the next head of makeup for Warner Brothers!

Q

. I have had the same therapist for the last two years, and I just don’t feel like we are getting anywhere. Do I need to find another therapist, or is it just me?

Signed frustrated mother.

A

. If you’ve been seeing the same therapist for two years and you feel stalled, you need to discuss this with her/him. Sometimes it does mean you need to move on, but it is more often resistance. Resistance is a defense against going deeper and asking the really tough questions. Therapy is often hard work, and the work is overcoming resistance. It feels like that’s what you describe as “not getting anywhere.” Pay more attention to your dreams and to what you don’t want to talk about rather than what you do. We can all chatter on about what happened during the past week, but what

did you think about? What’s been on your mind? Flashes of memory that show up as you’re driving to work, connections between then and now. What does this remind you of? It’s a richer life when you look with a broader vision that encompasses more than just the moment. I know that sounds like a contradiction when we constantly hear about living in the moment. Enlarge your moment to include the entirety of who you are, have been, and hope to be, while living in the moment. Sometimes keeping a journal of your thoughts helps in the therapeutic process. Not a journal of external events but a journal of your internal dialogue. Have you heard of “morning pages”? It consists of writing for a half hour every morning, whatever comes out of the end of your pen. Give your unconscious a chance to communicate with you. It will help in your therapy and help you get unstuck.

Make Your Own Calcium Take one raw, fertile egg (you can get them at Vitamin Cottage). Wash well. Take the juice of three lemons or so and cover the egg in a jar or glass. Cover the top with plastic wrap or lid and let it sit in the refrigerator for two to three days, (until the outside of the egg becomes soft.) Strain the liquid and store in a jar with a lid. It will come out milky white and is a wonderful and economical way to get your calcium supplements. Take a tablespoon a day and make as needed, (about every one to two weeks.) Note: Your body will easily absorb this and will not produce kidney stones.
