KITCHEN ART PROJECTS
with Jean Martin and the Hildegard Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Jean Martin 1924-2014
T
hese lessons come from the files of artist and teacher Jean Martin. They have been compiled by the Hildegard Center in Lincoln, Nebraska where they have developed the Art Bridges program.
BLOW PAINTING
SUPPLIES/MATERIALS: r Drinking straws r Construction paper (any color), 9” x 13” or other desired sizes r Tempera Paint r Matting to finish the art work r Old shirts to cover clothing and drop cloths/ newspaper to protect surfaces
r Potatoes and carrots— sliced into quarters, wedges or cut into specific shapes such as a flower or star INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Put a small “dab” of paint on the piece of construction paper. 2 . Take the straw and position it next to the “dab” of paint. 3. Gently blow through the straw and move the paint in the direction you want it to go. 4 . Repeat this process with additional dabs of paint until you have the desired design. 5. Let your creation dry flat. 6 . Matte your “Blow Painting” and hang it.
PAINTING “TOOLS” YOU CAN FIND IN THE KITCHEN Look through the drawers and cupboards in your kitchen to come up with some great tools to create art. r Sponges can be cut into various shapes and sizes to help create art
Page 6 • www.bouldercountykids.com
r Knives can be used to create straight lines and spread paint. r Squeeze bottles are helpful in painting narrow lines and/or experimenting with different textures. r Rags and paper towels are great for spreading paint and blending. r A few drops of paint in a salad spinner can be a creative (but messy!) painting method. r Cooked spaghetti with some paint added can be sensory and be used to create art. r Rolling pins can be used to spread paint colors over paper or a canvas. r Potato mashers and slotted spatulas can be used with paint to make prints. r Plastic wrap can be used to create unique textures. r Aluminum foil can be the basis for sculptures. r Coffee filters can be used to make snowflakes, flowers, and a multitude of other crafts. Fresh Produce combined with paper and paint can also be used to create art prints: r Apples and pears—cut lengthwise in half r Bananas--cut in half r Oranges and lemons-cut crosswise in half r Corn—cut in half with a stick inserted in the end to make a handle r Bell Peppers—sliced crosswise in half with the seeds removed r Broccoli and cauliflower—separated into individual florets r Mushrooms—sliced button or any round mushrooms lengthwise in half
FINGER PAINTING WITH CHOCOLATE PUDDING
By adding enough water to a package of instant chocolate pudding to give it the consistency of finger paint, any budding artist can have an interesting (and tasty!) new medium to create art. Use whatever you have on hand to work with the “paint” to create interesting designs. The texture of the pudding leaves a 3-dimensional effect when applied to paper. This is a great activity for any age.
MODELING CLAY
Air-Hardening Clay r 2 cups baking soda r 1 cup cornstarch r 1 1⁄2 cups cold water Place ingredients in a pan and stir until smooth. Set the
pan over medium heat and stir until boiling. Break up any lumps and cook until it is the consistency of mashed potatoes. Turn out onto a plate and cover with a damp, well-wrung kitchen towel— let the mixture cool. Dust a work surface with cornstarch and knead until pliable—then you are ready to create! You can add food coloring to the clay or leave it white and paint it after it dries.
No-Cook Play Dough r 2 cups all-purpose flour r 1 cup salt r 1 cup cold water r 1 T vegetable oil (can use baby oil) Drop all the ingredients into a plastic bag and seal. Knead the ingredients together inside the bag then tip it out for modeling fun.

Kids’ Planet... with Thorne Nature Experience
RACHEL CARSON, DDT, and ME
by Dr. Oakleigh Thorne, II
I
first met Rachel Carson in 1952 when I was a graduate student in the Yale Conservation Program, which today is called Environmental Studies. I was working on my Master’s degree project. It was to raise funds to save the Sunken Forest on Fire Island, NY. This was a forest of mainly American holly trees on this barrier island off the south coast of Long Island. Dr. Richard ”Dick” Pough, the well-known bird guide author, had suggested to me that I take on this project. He gave me the names of various people and foundations to contact. One of them was John Oakes, the N.Y. Times editorial writer, who

wrote an article about my efforts. Rachel Carson read it, called me up, and asked, “Can I help?” Walt Disney had recently made a movie of her book The Sea Around Us. She came to speak at our fundraising dinner about her book and her love of the sea.
Page 8 • www.bouldercountykids.com
We raised several thousand dollars towards saving the Sunken Forest! It was about the same time that I received a call from Ernie Brooks, director of the Old Dominion Foundation in New York City. They had approved a grant of $15,000 toward my project, but he could not give the money directly to me. It had to go to a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization. I had no idea what that was. So I immediately called Dick Pough and told him my problem. Two years earlier he and some friends from the Ecological Society had formed a nonprofit. They had just received their taxexempt status. He said that these funds could be funneled through their little
new organization to help my project. When I asked him what its name was, he said, “We’re calling it The Nature Conservancy!” Today this is one of the largest conservation organizations in the world! I was soon joined in my efforts by others who wanted to help. We were successful in saving the Sunken Forest. It later became part of the Fire Island National Seashore run by the National Park Service. Rachel Carson called me again six months later and wanted me to do a survey of what natural areas were still left along the Atlantic Coast between Maine and Florida. She had received a grant to do this work. I had to turn her down because I had already accepted an important summer job at Valley Ranch in Wyoming. Wow, that was hard for me! Less than a decade later, Rachel Carson wrote her most famous book, Silent Spring. It was how insecticides, especially DDT, were damaging many of our valuable ecosystems in the United States. As a result, we were losing some of our most important bird species, such
as the Bald Eagle (our national emblem), Osprey, and Peregrine Falcon, to name a few. When people sprayed DDT to kill various flies and bugs, some of it would get into ponds, streams, and lakes. A tiny water organism would absorb a small amount of DDT. Then a small fish would eat that organism. Then a bigger fish would eat the smaller one. The amount of DDT would increase in the fatty tissue of each fish as one went up what we call the “food chain with bigger and bigger fish. Finally when a big bird, like an eagle, would eat one of the large fish, it would get enough DDT in its body to do damage to its egg shells. They would become so soft that the eggs would break. No baby eagles would hatch! Rachel Carson died of cancer shortly after her famous book was published. She was

a great biologist and today is recognized as one of the most significant authors of her century. I feel greatly honored to have known her.

Dealing with a Vegetarian Teen by Donna Feldman, MS RDN
I
f your teenager, or preteen, announced “I’m not eating meat anymore. I’m vegetarian (or vegan),” what would be your first reaction? Panic? Irritation? You would not be alone. The last thing a busy parent of teenagers needs is yet another monkey wrench thrown into the delicate machinery of daily family life. Do you have the time and energy to quickly become an expert on vegetarian cooking and teen nutrition, while also dealing with school issues, monitoring social media usage, scheduling and driving car pools, worrying about drugs and alcohol, enforcing rules,
working, managing home finances and having a life? Do you look forward to cooking two separate meals every night? You probably don’t. While raising my own teens and counseling parents on nutrition issues for their kids, I’ve met plenty of people in that exact situation. And I’ve seen as many ways to cope as there are families.

Reactions range from complete disengagement—make yourself a PB&J for dinner every night to extreme involvement—research and write a report about all the consequences of giving up meat, along with a detailed plan on how you will make up for any nutritional deficiencies, along with recipes and meal plans. So where should you begin? You may not demand a 10-page research report, but if your teenager wants to be a vegetarian or vegan, I believe he or she should be involved in the implementation. Their decision to give up meat should not turn into another chore for Mom or Dad to deal with. That means learning about the nutritional issues involved and finding foods and recipes that are healthy and that they will eat. Protein is one important consideration. Meat and dairy foods are high protein, so vegetarians and vegans include plant protein sources like beans, nuts and whole grains in their daily diet. But, in the world of the new vegetarian teen, it could be all about soy burgers, energy bars, fake meat, plant-based “milk” and soy lattes. And that can be a problem. A teenager who gives up meat (and if vegan, dairy and eggs), left to his or her own devices
could end up eating an unbalanced and highly processed diet. This is where parents need to step in. It might be tempting to make meal planning easy and just load up on packages of soy burgers. But your teen would be missing out on the variety and health benefits of a diverse plantbased diet, full of vegetables, beans, grains, nuts, fruit, dairy and eggs. Not to mention the variety of flavors and textures that go along with all those foods. From a health standpoint, a steady diet of soy burgers isn’t that different from a steady and equally unbalanced diet of fast food cheeseburgers. Several vitamins and minerals are also of concern for vegetarian or vegan teens. Calcium is critical for bone growth, especially during growth spurts in the teen years. Dairy foods like milk, yogurt and cheese are the best natural sources. Plant milks are poor sources of calcium unless they’re fortified. Many are these days, and foods like legumes and greens are also naturally good calcium sources. Vitamin B12 may be of concern for vegans, as it’s only found in animal-sourced foods. The form of iron in meat is better absorbed than the iron salts in plant foods, but a balanced vegetarian or vegan diet can provide enough of this mineral. The good news about having a vegetarian or vegan teen: it’s an opportunity for the family to explore recipes and meals that are more plant-based. When planned
BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH properly, it’s a healthier diet for everyone. The point isn’t forced conversion to a meatless diet. Rather, you can learn about strategies for eating less meat. And keep in mind, the teenage years are for exploring, developing an identity and pushing against boundaries. Giving up meat may be a permanent change, inspired by peer pressure or concerns about the environment or animals. But it may also be temporary or sporadic. One week it’s all about vegan foods; the next week your son is guzzling milk or eating ice cream. Your vegetarian daughter may also eat chicken. My advice: as long as they’re eating good food, ignore these inconsistencies, but keep them involved with meal planning.

Avery’s Avid-Reader Corner Review by Avery Katz, age 18
Howard Hughes: The Secret Life Author: Charles Higham Publisher: G.P. Putnam’s Sons Price: $7.99 (Google Play), $23.10 (Amazon.com) Ages: 14+ Summary: Higham’s book details the life of one of the
most major contributors to aviation in the 20th century. A self-made man, Howard Hughes was a successful filmmaker, inventor, entrepreneur, engineer and aviator. His accomplishments before entering aviation were many. He was creating popular films in his early 20s, and saw heavy involvement in both business and real-estate. By 1939, at just 34, Hughes had already test flown the Hughes H1, D2, and XF 11. All were part of his own aircraft production company, Hughes Aircraft. Furthermore, he would go on to purchase TWA airlines, only adding to an already impressive legacy in the industry. All of this success was not without its struggles, however. It was common knowledge that Hughes had become less public as he aged. Many attributed this to worsening obsessive compulsive disorder and other physical stresses. However, Hughes never let the challenges stop him. He always seemed to push through and emerge the victor despite the toll of a situation, and his legacy certainly displays that. Overall, this book will give you an in-depth analysis of the man many thought they knew, despite the secret life which he led behind closed doors. The reading level for this story in reality lies somewhere in the 11-12 range as it pertains to difficulty. I only list 14 and up as some slightly more mature topics such as mental illness do appear in the story. Otherwise, it is a great read, and shows that even when challenges present themselves, a positive legacy can still be left if proper dedication is given to success. What I Liked About the Book: As a future pilot and
somebody who spent a great deal of his time interested in aviation throughout my childhood, The Aviator, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes, was a movie which stood out to me at the time of its release. It was quite a spectacle to witness the story of a man who test flew so many aircraft such as the H1 Racer, XF 11, and Hercules H4 all at a time in which developments were being made in aviation left and right. This book gives young aviation enthusiasts who may have already seen the film a chance to learn more about the man portrayed on screen.

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS Setting Your Child up for Success in Sports by Tatum Oman

ports can be amazing for children. Along with the physical attributes, sports can help increase self confidence, communication and cooperation skills, and lower anxiety. If in the wrong sport, negative affects can occur as well. A question that I am asked sometimes is what sport would be a good fit for my child? Is s/he ready for a team sport? Is it okay to quit a sport and try something new? This article will be based on the emotional/feeling side of an individual and is meant to help brain storming.
gymnastics. Some team sports include lacrosse, soccer, basketball, cheerleading, football, hockey, and softball/ baseball.
Individual sport or team sport?
There are many things to consider when choosing a sport for your child. Your child first and foremost must have a desire to play a sport. There are many sports to choose from. To begin with,

team vs. individual is a big question. Is your child easily distracted? Does your child exhibit extreme anxiety or high frustration in life (s/he may seem to not have triggers and explode spontaneously, cry easily)? If you said yes to any of these, an individual sport is advised to start with and depending on the child possibly the only type sports s/he ever does. Individual sports allow more one-on-one attention encouraging focus. Some of those sports involve individuals playing solo but can affect a team. In these sports, children can learn some of the same social lessons that they learn from team sports. A few can also lead to a small team within a team, for instance a relay track team which would be an easier transition to a bigger team sport if that is a desired goal of the child’s. The child needs to be able to build their self confidence and lower anxiety prior to playing on a team sport so to be more successful. Being successful individually is one way to help build his/her self confidence. Examples of individual sports: martial arts (*there are many kinds, look into before committing), tennis, climbing, cycling, track, archery, skiing, swimming,
Which sport do we choose? Physical Requirements
Once you have figured out if your child would most likely would be successful in an individual sport or team, the next step is which one exactly. Certain sports require more hand-eye coordination like tennis, basketball and hockey while others require more balance like soccer. Softball/baseball requires a lot of focus to name another. Take into account their body size as well; smaller bodied children may have an easier time in lacrosse vs. football where a smaller child may be knocked around easier. A child will have more success if s/he obtains the requirements first. It is worth researching what is needed prior to making a commitment to that sport. It is not to say your child cannot improve in the sport and likely will especially if placed correctly and the right amount of praise and encouragement is given. Time Committment
Different sports require d i ff e r e n t t i m e c o m m i t ments as well. Is your child an introvert, needing more alone time after school to help stay grounded? What is
your child’s schedule currently like? Busy or have a lot of time to fill because restless? Some sports meet once a week while others meet 5 to 6 times a week. Also, is your child active in life currently so it would not be a big change to be in a physically demanding sport like football?
How can I help my child’s self confidence and success?
S o y o u h a v e i t n a rrowed down and your child is signed up for their sport. How can you help your child be successful, have fun, and increase their self confidence? With a mix of encouragement and constructive criticism. Timing is Huge here. When your child is proud of themselves, let them be proud. After a game, it is not the time for constructive criticism. It is the time for praise and encouragement. Examples: Good job! You rocked it! I saw you make that goal, way to go! You should be proud of yourself! Constructive Criticism
It is hard at times to not say something right away, however, your child will hear you more if you wait. If your child asks you for immediate feedback, let them know how proud you are and that s/he should be proud as well. To give you time to think about it and you can talk later on. Ask them what do they think? They may know the answer and ask for specific help. If help is not asked for but you really want to help them, a few days later when practicing, work into the play what s/he needs help with. If focus is a concern, there are exercises that can help learn this skill. And it will not necessarily involve the field or court. Sports can truly build up a

child and enhance their life; however, if not chosen wisely a sport can hinder a child as well. If a child makes a commitment to a team and then wants to quit mid-season, have your child at least sit on the bench so to support the team for that season. Explore with your child why the desire to quit if at end of the season and not wanting to go back. Is it something that can be worked on like dexterity or coordination? Or are they wanting to try something new and explore their happiness within something else? Just as an adult, a child discovers their passions in experiencing. Let’s help them to have amazing experiences.

My wife worries all the time. Sometimes she will cancel events just because she is too worried about things going wrong. I know it is something from her childhood because her mother said she has

Excessive worrying is also known as Chronic Anxiety. Anxiety is not good for our health, physically, mentally or emotionally. Some people believe their anxiety/worrying keeps them safe or keeps bad things from happening. In fact, it does neither. That could be thought of as “magical thinking.” Somehow one’s thoughts alone can
control the outside world. I can “think” events to happen or not. This does not work except coincidently. Chronic anxiety often starts in childhood and raises one’s “anxiety set point” for life. We speak of people being “high strung” as though they were the strings of a violin wound too tight. This is a condition that needs therapy and medication management with antidepressants. They have been found to control anxiety very well. They help to lower the anxiety set point and may help your wife contain her worrying. People with an anxiety disorder do not have the ability to relax and trust in the belief that everything will be all right. We control what we can and give the rest over to the powers that be.

Recently an old high school buddy of 50 years ago came to visit my friend for a week. My friend was worried that his buddy would prove offensive to his wife, as his buddy was often opinionated and “crass” But my friend’s wife was up to the task at hand. She engaged the old high
school buddy with wit and humor. They went on to have a fun week of seeing the sights in their town. She was what we used to call a “good sport.” Are women just better at that than men? Are we more adaptable or adjustable or just more willing to put up with someone because he is our husband’s old friend? Or does this not necessarily hold true. Please don’t give up your friends for the sake of your husband or even your marriage. Doing so will mean that you will disappear and that his desires are more important than yours. After years of being eroded, you will no longer recognize yourself. This is about the art of compromise. How can a marriage survive without give and take? If your husband is averse to going to couple’s counseling, perhaps there are marriage or interpersonal relationship classes in your church or elsewhere in your town. They are often less intimidating than couple’s counseling. It’s a good place to start. You might also consider beginning individual therapy yourself.

any Gen X-ers and Millennials are suffering from stress, and their stress bleeds out onto their children. Unfortunately, they and their children are using unhealthy stress management tools like watching two or more hours of movies or TV a day, surfing the Internet, overeating, self-medicating with alcohol or other drugs, smoking, taking prescription anti-anxiety drugs, and napping and sleeping more than they need. These coping mechanisms beget more stress in the longterm. Our children are suffering. According to the 2011 Hea l t h y Ki d s Colorado Survey, 24.3 percent of high school students in Colorado reported feeling sad everyday for two weeks or more to the point that their daily activities were effected, 14.5 seriously considered suicide, and 6.6 percent attempted suicide one or more times. Unfortunately, many people try to reason with the children or adults who are suffering from stress. The reality is that we need to follow the three Rs—regulate, relate, then reason. Many of you when reading this will get what I am saying about how reasoning is futile: “Never in the history of calming down has anyone ever calmed down by being told to calm down.” So what does it mean to regulate, relate and then reason? What happens in the brain when people, young and old, are stressed is that
their amygdala or “lizard” brain is activated. They feel fear and become reactive. They are unable to focus. Their thinking is unreasonable. They are basically in survival model. They are not available to be reasoned with or engaged intellectually. To help anybody who is stressed, including children, get out of survival mode, once you meet their physical needs for nutritious food, a safe comfortable predictable environment, sleep, a vibrant and supportive community with healthy relationships, several techniques can be used to regulate the nervous system: 1) orientation to the present moment. This is similar to the concept of distraction used by some parents to calm their children, and it is very specific in that the change in focus is deliberate to bring into awareness what is actually going on by encouraging the stressed person to name colors and objects, and sense textures, smells and sounds; 2) instead of punishing and breaking off connection, move in and offer presence and safe touch to the extent that it is welcomed by the child or adult who is dis-regulated; 3) model rhythmic deep breath. Deep breath slows the heart rate, gets more oxygen to the brain, and calms people; 4) try to calm yourself down using one of the above methods. As humans, because we have what are called mir-
ror neurons, we are very affected by the psychological state of one another. Do you ever notice how your emotional state can be affected by somebody else’s? It works both ways. As people become regulated, their breathing becomes deeper, their muscles relax, the tension in their face melts, and you can begin to relate. As you relate, don’t try to control them, rather engage them in conversation or non-verbal communication. Offer understanding and compassion in the form of guessing what they may need with the desire to connect, not to change or manipulate them into a different emotional or mental state. Show interest in them. Relating can also be used as a way to regulate, if you are coming from a regulated place. As you regulate and relate, you will notice that the discussion can become more creative and “reasoned”—like a cloud has been lifted. Next time you are stressed out or are with somebody
who is, don’t tell them to calm down, instead regulate, relate and then reason. Of course, it is optimal to be proactive and take good care of yourself and your children by eliminating undue stress—by sleeping enough, eating nutritious food, connecting with nature, having a strong vibrant community with healthy face-toface interactions, exercising, having a safe warm physical environment, and creating routines. And in your community, if you know of people who are stretched very thin, help them by offering what you can of the above. ouisville-based registered dietitian Donna P. Feldman, MS RDN, has published Feed Your Vegetarian Teen, for parents of teens who decide to give up meat. There are many reasons for teens to experiment with diet changes: peer pressure, concern about animal welfare, concern about the environment and personal health and weight. Vegetarian and vegan diets are a popular choice in Boulder County. Parents may see this as yet another parenting chore to make life with teenagers even more complicated. “Feed Your Vegetarian Teen” gives parents the tools to understand nutrition and health implications of a meatless diet. The book includes basic nutrition information for vegan or vegetarian teens, and information about the benefits of plant-based diets for health and the environment. Recipes use high protein foods—from meat to tofu—as condiments,
so everyone can share one meal, adding the protein food of their choice. The book is available on Amazon for $11.95 paperback, or Kindle version for $3.99, and it is available at The Boulder Bookstore in the Vegetarian Cooking section. For more information check out www. I owe so much to the amazing teachers who have been involved with our school and I know that we all will continue our journey in sharing our love of these most magical years of early childhood. As we sing everyday at our school…“la la this away, la la that away, la la this away, here we go….” Deep thanks to all of you for your kindness and support that made our school so special. And many thanks to Boulder County Kids for their dedication to sharing and caring for our community with their great publication. With love, Mindy Upton.
BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH FINANCIAL WHEN SHOULD KIDS START LEARNING TO SAVE MONEY?
T
by Steve Carr
he answer is simple: As soon as possible! Experts concur that there is no such thing as starting too early when it comes to learning to save. While it’s obvious that a 3-year-old is not going to understand portfolio management or know what a money market account is, toddlers begin to learn about controlling their behavior, sharing, making better choices, etc. So go ahead and introduce the savings concept. In fact, it is generally easier to teach the value of savings with younger children than with teenagers or college-bound students. In most cases, younger children actually respond better because savings can be fun, (such as putting coins in a savings bank and watching their money grow), or observing Mommy and Daddy discussing saving and spending decisions. In addition, they have far less peer pressure to spend money, and parents can help guide and reward them to make savings a habit early on. Further, when kids are young, it is also easy to integrate learning about savings into their daily lives. For example, when reading Winnie the Pooh to them,
interject… “Notice that how Winnie the Pooh loves to eat honey, but still tries to save some honey for blustery days ahead? Well, just like Winnie, it is important for us as a family to not buy everything we want. Instead, we can take that money and put it in our savings for another day for when times are not so good.” As time goes by, reinforcement is critical! Remind them, over the past years when you wanted all of those new toys like puzzles, dolls, action figures, and so on. Well, instead of buying those things, we put that money into your own savings account which has now grown to $535.95. With your continued help, we hope that balance will continue to grow, so when you get older, you will have enough money to purchase your first used car instead of financing it, since financing makes a car cost even more. This helps to
“Compounding interest is the most powerful force in the Universe” – Albert Einstein
illustrate how saving money today [instead of spending it] will be there for them later in life to buy even bigger, more meaningful things. Also, taking them to the financial institution to actually make their own deposits can further their learning and make savings a habit. Time is of the essence. The earlier one starts to save money, the more time it has to earn compound interest and double in value. Compounding interest simply means, earned interest also earns interest, and that extra amount begins to grow exponentially. The Rule of 72 is a formula to estimate how many years it takes for an investment to double. Divide the average annual interest rate into 72. The answer is the number of years. More importantly, consider that an extra 10 to 12 years of portfolio growth can double the size of a nest egg due to how compounding interest and the Rule of 72 can work for you. Small savings adds up over the years and for example, regular deposits at a young age can accumulate up to a million dollars or more. And the extra 10 to 12 years can make a $½ million become $1 million, or $2 million become $4 million, etc.
If your children are older, it still is never too late to help them learn the importance of saving and help them start budgeting money. For example, before they need a new computer or cell phone, explain to them that it is better to save money to help pay for these types of things. Take time to help them develop their own short and longterm goals. This will show them how saving money today will help them attain more expensive items they want (delayed gratification) like a new computer or cell phone. Give them opportunities to earn money by helping you around the house; it’s a win-win situation! And finally, how much should one save? As you can see, savings is not only important, but is very powerful to help improve the quality of life. Experts say 10%. While this is a good rule of thumb, work on stretching that to more when you can. Find ways to trim spending money and earn extra money. Take those dollars and sock them away. Those extra savings today will help make your future so much brighter. Happy $avings! Steve Carr is the Business Development Consultant at Premier Members Credit Union. Mountain Peak is an independent, nonsectarian school that focuses on educating the whole child. Recently voted Longmont’s #1 private school. We recognize that each child is unique, therefore our teachers are empowered to individualize curriculum based on each child’s developmental stage. We offer learning experiences that reach beyond the core academic areas beginning at the preschool level. We strive for excellence by nurturing each child’s intellect, curiosity, and social growth. And because studies have shown that large class sizes adversely affect learning, we are committed to keeping our classes small (15-16 maximum for 1st-6th grades, 10-12 for preschool & Kindergarten). Come and discover what “true” individualized curriculum is. Before/after-school care available. We offer art, music, French, daily PE, Coding and STEM. Our philosophy incorporates the best thoughts on education over the centuries, our methods whisper of the past while remaining the best preparation for the future; our students are not told what to think; they are taught how to think for themselves; our community thrives on family activities and shared values; our academic pursuits are worthy of thoughtful conversation and guided practice.
