Giving Our Children a Sense of Belonging I
by Jessica Dancingheart
t is in our human nature to want to be valued and be part of a community that loves and accepts us for who we are. Sometimes, in the hustle and bustle of life as we go from one task to the other, we forget we can simply and effectively show those we love that we care about them by spending quality time. Unfortunately, we extend that curiosity to strangers more than to those we live with, when we make chores and responsibilities the focus of our daily lives. On my recent trip to Israel, I happened on a mosque that the locals were entering for prayer services. I was curious and wanted to experience the spirituality of a tradition that I don’t experience in Boulder, while also wanting to be respectful. So, I entered with eagerness and trepidation. Immediately, I was
greeted by several women who helped me dress in the traditional prayer clothing. Then, they made space for me in their prayer line. One woman took me under her wings and gently modeled the words and prayer movements for me. She did not instruct, admonish or direct me as we bowed down, got up, sat on our knees and chanted. As I missed a movement, she gently tapped my hand and showed me what I needed to do. After the prayer service, the women greeted each other and me with blessings and deep genuine smiles of delight. Even though I was a stranger, I felt as though I was part of their community.

I felt like I belonged and was valued in ways that I don’t when my tasks take precedence over the quality of connection I have with people. I was deeply touched by this experience and tried to cull out what about it was so incredible. I began to wonder what I could do to extend this joyful and deep sense of belonging to people in my daily life. How can I use this experience to help myself and other parents in raising content children who know they are special and important members of the community. What came to me is this:
1
Put spending quality time with loved ones and friends at the top of the to-do list. Be as specific as you can about how this looks for each one of the special people in your life by showing genuine curiosity and interest in those things that bring them joy. As I entered the mosque, I was interested in an experience that I believed was life giving to the people who were at the prayer service. Rather than asking, “How are you? I demonstrated by my curiosity. “What gives
you joy? “What is important to you? “When do you feel most alive? “What are your dreams? Rather than only ask what happened during the day, you can join inquisitively in an activity of your child’s choice.
2
Dare to be vulnerable. As I entered the mosque, I knew very little other than what I had read in the papers and sometimes seen from the distance during my travels. I was willing to be imperfect. And just as I showed interest, I shared myself—even though there was a language barrier between me and the other women. I tried to answer questions with the very little I understood. As a parent, be willing to not know everything and to learn from your children. You can open yourself up to learning a skill or bit of wisdom from your child.
3
See others as you would a friend. Even though the news tells me that I should be afraid of traveling in Israel, and afraid of the radical people of the various faith traditions there, I was willing to go beyond the rumors and the stereotypes. As a parent, you can look for the best qualities in your child, there are plenty of
them. Let go of the few times they did something that was displeasing and treat each moment as a new one.
4
Show those you love what you like and give them the choice to do it your way or not. Through my mosque mentor’s modeling, I was excited to learn. Had she admonished me or instructed me, I may have become selfconscious or afraid. Rather, I was willing and open to learning, and I wanted to follow her lead. As a parent, you can model rather than instruct and allow for a form to evolve that is uniquely your child’s. As parents, sometimes our focus is so much on meeting our children’s material needs and helping them accomplish, as we rush about from one responsibility to the other, that we may forget to take the time to pause and be curiously present for our children,

showing them that they are very special, belong to our family and are an important part of this world. Make quality time with your children a priority, and write or call to tell me how much it is helping their and your sense of belonging and being valued.

BOULDER'S OPEN SPACE
by Dr. Oakleigh Thorne, II
I
’ve often been asked to talk about the history of Boulder’s Open Space as I remember it. In the early 1960s I was appointed by City Council to the very first Parks & Recreation Advisory Board, known as the “Park Board.” Our role was to advise City Council about matters that affected various parks, recreation, and associated land use. We first determined that there was a key acre on the west edge of town that could be the connection between Eben Fine Park and the Red Rocks. The new owners of this acre were planning to build an office building on the site. After talking with them about the importance of this acre for open space, they generously offered to give up their plans and buy some other acre in town if they could just get
The Mesa Trail was one of the areas saved by Open Space.
their original money back. I was able to buy this acre from them and hold it for one year until the City could budget the funds to buy it back from me for the same price. I then had the honor of naming it “Settler’s Park,” since the first settlers of Boulder had camped at this spot. As we had imagined back then, today there is indeed a tunnel that connects Eben Fine with Settler’s and the Red Rocks.

The next project we undertook was the purchase of Enchanted Mesa, just south of Chautauqua Park. The City of Boulder Mountain Parks, which included the famous Flatirons, had been created by Act of Congress in the early 1900s, but it did not include the mesas in front of the Flatirons. So having had Enchanted Mesa appraised for $105,000, the City decided to have a citizen’s vote for a bond issue in that amount. We had a good campaign with bumper stickers that read “Enchanted Mesa: YES!” The bond issue passed, but the owner, Kenneth Mirise, refused to sell it for that price. He had planned to build a hotel and two hundred homes on this mesa, but it was above the “Blue Line,” which had been passed in 1959 forbidding the City to supply water or sewer service above this line.
So the case went to condemnation court and the judge told the City to pay Mirise $115,000. We then had a private campaign to raise the extra $10,000 and were successful. Enchanted Mesa was purchased and saved! T h e n D r. Wa l t e r O r r Roberts came to the Park Board with a proposal to build NCAR (National Center of Atmospheric Research) on Table Mesa, the next mesa south of Enchanted Mesa. This would preserve about 500 acres of open space and only one building would be built, designed by I. M. Pei, a world-class architect. But the NCAR site was above the Blue Line. Several of us had just founded PLAN-Boulder County, a citizen’s “watchdog” group. Since the City had no funds to buy Table Mesa, we felt that Dr. Roberts’s plan was a good compromise and would save a big section of open space. So PLAN-Boulder came out in favor of a citizen’s vote to make an exception to the Blue Line and allow NCAR to be built. It passed and NCAR was built. We then decided that the next step was to pass a sales tax to buy open space. In 1910, Frederick Law Omstead Jr. had done a study
of Boulder. His father had designed Central Park in New York City. He proposed the establishment of greenbelts along Boulder Creek and around the City. We republished the Olmstead report and used it in our education campaign. Our bumper sticker said “Greenbelts, YES!” The sales tax passed! The City of Boulder Open Space Department was formed, years later to be merged with Mountain Parks. Many thousand additional acres of open space have been added since then by both the City and County of Boulder. We’re lucky to have all this land preserved as open space forever!

sentences! Perhaps the musicality of Mandarin provided fertile ground for the music/language connection. Perhaps the interaction with other children and families provided role models for communication. Or, perhaps the integration of the music with movement helped Sammy make new found connections with his body and sense of self. Whatever the Photo Courtesy of Music Together® LLC.
ammy is a two-anda-half-year-old little boy full of vigor and curiosity. At the age of seven months he was adopted from Taiwan by his Englishspeaking family and brought back to Boulder. Surrounded by Mandarin speakers in the orphanage for the first seven months of his life, Sammy showed early signs of language delays. Well into his first year in his new home, Sammy was unable to formulate words and could only communicate through hand signing and “grunting.” Despite his high level of intelligence and ability to understand the English language, Sammy became increasingly frustrated in his efforts to formulate words.
reason, Sammy’s experience is a powerful testimonial to the effect that music can have on language development. Sammy’s story is not limited to children with special needs. Many parents have experienced the ways in which their child’s language development has blossomed as a direct result of early childhood music classes. Anecdotes about children being able to sing the words to a song before being able to speak. Stories about increased attention span, listening skills, vocabulary and creativity. The list goes on and connections are being made in a playful environment. What is this powerful relationship between language
and music, and how can parents maximize this window of opportunity to its fullest? Children are born wired to be musical and to express themselves musically. From a global/human perspective, all cultures have their unique form of musical expression. From an evolutionary/biological perspective, primitive language was thought to be “sung” and gradually evolved into the spoken word. From a neurological perspective, music integrates both the left and right hemispheres of the brain. As David Lazear, author of “Seven Ways of Knowing” states “by connecting sound, movement, speech, and interaction with a musical component, it is possible to activate and integrate more of the brain than with any other educational tool.” Many parallels can be drawn between music and language reception and production. Both language and musical development involve active listening. As we are continually surrounded by extraneous sound in our environment, the ability to listen with discernment is important for both language, music and general focus. By exposing children to a variety of sound, rhythm and tonality at an early age, children learn to pay attention to and decipher their aural environment. In the spoken word, phonological awareness is a child’s ability to break down the parts of a word which is an essential pre-reading skill. In music, rhythmic and tonal patterns allow a child to break down a song into its essential parts. The parts of the word become a sentence within the context of a whole story. The parts of a rhythm or tonal pattern become a musical phrase within the context of a whole song or piece of music. Through playful experimentation with their sound and
BOULDER County Kids
voice, children of all ages can deepen their listening and expressive capabilities. Babies will begin to babble musically, toddlers will use language and music to assert their developing sense of self; preschoolers can use music and language to develop their personal expression and creativity. The production of speech requires the coordination of muscle groups, the ability to think ahead and imagine what you are going to say before saying it. By learning “self talk” (talking about what you are doing) children eventually internalize their actions and reduce impulsivity. Music slows this process down and provides a sense of rhythm and predictability. The coordination of breath involved with singing internalizes this process and provides focus and foundation. When children sing about what they are doing, they are able to make this mind/body connection in a playful way. This helps with memory, sequencing, impulse control and sense of self. Early exposure and active participation are critical for optimizing these music and language benefits. Both music and language have early critical windows of development. Listening to music is wonderful, but providing your child with opportunities to playfully experiment musically creates the most connections. These connections go beyond the notion that “music makes you smarter” or can raise test scores or academic performance. Music is truly a “language” unto itself. On a much deeper level, music is a way of knowing and experiencing beyond the spoken word. Music for music’s sake is central to appreciating these extramusical benefits. Through sound, tone, color, rhythm

THE NEW
$100 Bill

or only the fourth time in history, there will be a new $100 note that is scheduled to begin circulating on October 8, 2013. The U.S. government has recently unveiled a new $100 note, primarily as a means of combating increasingly techsavvy counterfeiters. The new security features come after more than a decade of research and development to protect our currency from being counterfeited. The new design for the $100 note retains the traditional look of U.S. currency, but the redesign has sophisticated technologies, such as a blue 3-D security ribbon and a color-changing Liberty Bell. However, the new design retains the effective portrait watermark of Benjamin Franklin, the embedded security thread, and the colorshifting numeral 100 that are present in the current note. These various security features are easy for consumers and merchants to authenticate and more difficult for counterfeiters to replicate. The blue 3-D security ribbon on the front of the new $100 note contains images

of bells and 100s that move and change from one to the other as you tilt the note. Additionally, the ribbon is woven into the paper, not printed on it. The bell in the inkwell on the front of the note changes color from copper to green when the note is tilted, an effect that makes it seem to appear and disappear within the copper inkwell. To ensure a seamless introduction of the new $100 note into the financial system, the U.S. Treasury will continue global public education of retailers, financial institutions and industry organizations, to ensure that consum-

ers and merchants are aware of the new security features. Consumers and businesses will not have to trade in older $100 notes for new ones. Current and older designs of Federal Reserve Notes remain legal tender and will not be recalled, demonetized, or devalued. “For 145 years, the men and women of the United States Secret Service have worked diligently to protect the integrity of U.S. currency from counterfeiters,” said Secret Service Director Mark Sullivan. “During that time, our agency has evolved to keep pace with the advanced methodologies employed by the criminals we pursue. What has remained constant in combating counterfeiting, however, is the effectiveness of consumer education initiatives that urge merchants and customers to examine the security features on the notes they receive.” Although less than 1/100th of one percent of the value of all U.S. currency in circulation is reported counterfeit, the $100 note is the most

The $100 bill is the largest denomination that has been printed since July 13, 1969, when the denominations of $500, $1000, $5000, and $10000 were retired? ello. My name is Isabella Martinez. This year I will be a freshman to Boulder High School. The weather will begin to cool, and magical winds will bring gold, maroon, and dark-colored leaves to the solid ground. New produce is slowly growing, and colorful new sprouts are coming up through the soil. Farmers are still working very hard. It is the season of fall. I will be sharing with you how different organic food businesses go through a typical day and bring the harvest to town for us to enjoy. The Boulder Farmers Market is a group of sellers of all kinds of organic produce. It runs from the beginning of the hot summer all the way into November. The market is located in Boulder on 13th Street between Arapahoe and Canyon and is an excellent place to spend your Wednesday nights, from 4 to 9 pm, or Saturdays, from
Max Alexander, Isabella and Ana Figel shopping at the Boulder Farmer’s Market.
8 am to 2 pm. Longmont also has its markets on Saturdays from 8 am to 1 pm at the county fair grounds at Nelson and Hover Streets. In Boulder, I stopped at a booth with cold-pressed juice called Pressery. There I talked to Mimi, who explained that fruits and vegetables and even nuts are coldpressed daily. There are two pounds of natural product in each small 16-oz bottle. She described the market as high
Page 16 • Bouldercountykids.com
energy and said that meeting people and selling is one of her favorite parts. I then went to Papusas. They are a local vender that sells their yummy food in various places. There, my friends Ana Figel and Max Alexander joined me and we talked to the staff in Spanish as they cooked the Papusas. We talked to Franklin, who told us that it is nice to work there, and it is all organic. He likes cooking and also makes lemonade to sell to the community. Another business I encountered was a pie-making business called My Mom’s Pie. Boulder County Kids did a story on them a couple of issues ago. They explained that they make up to 1,000 pies a week, and Jimmy, an employee, stated, “In one word, I would describe my day as insanity.” There is so much work, and they do the best they can to order healthy produce for their tasty glu-
ten-free and regular pies of all kinds. I then went to an organic produce stand named Cure Organic Farm. Here the vegetables were lined up and organized and I had the chance to talk to Maggie. She says they wake up at around 5 to 6 o’clock in the morning and harvest their veggies and produce. After they load up their truck, they drive 20 minutes into Boulder. Maggie says, “I LOVE the farmers market. Each day is different and so exciting.” The farmers market also has products from animals. I interviewed people from the Windsor Dairy. They wake up early in the morning and pick up the cheese, cut it, wrap it, label it and drive one hour to the market. I talked to a lady named Sharon from Colorado Extension who was explaining Pollinator Week. I learned about pollination and how honeybees are not the only pollinators out there. There are hummingbirds, some insects, and many other species that have that ability. She told me about making things for the bees to live in. While I was walking I heard guitar strums and saw people singing about recycling, reusing, and reducing. The Farmer’s Market is an excellent place for all types of people to enjoy tasty food and learn important things. There is a wonderful variety of food, from dairy to snap peas. The people there are as diverse as the produce, but each person I spoke with said that they all feel one with the community and try to support each other any way they can.

BOULDER County Kids 5 Tips to a Happy Healthy Harvest 4. Ground
A
by Sue Van Raes
hh, fall, the season of harvest, a time to go inward, reflect and gather. This time of year nature contracts, our abundant harvest begins to turn to preparation and storage for the winter, and we follow the energies of nature by listening inward, planning for our darker days and nights, and preparing for the upcoming stillness of winter. Our sense of smell is heightened, and our appetite is stimulated by the fragrance of our warming foods. Our bodies want to release and let go of sadness and grief that is stored in our lungs. This time of cleansing is about releasing, letting go and strengthening our bodies for the colder days. Fall cleansing brings us a deep sense of our truths and our connection to our bodies, our homes and our communities. Fall is one of the most colorful and abundant seasons of the year. The heat of the summer has ceased, and we see the yellow hue in the sky, as the sun hits the pumpkin fields and tall grass each afternoon. I love walking around the farmers market at this time of year, because in the fall beauty, each booth is peaking with its fullness, each farmer has been able to see his/her year to full abundance and fruition. The air cools, the cooking creativity begins and we celebrate the harvest. There are many ways to connect
with the season of autumn. Children love to run through the corn maize and carve their pumpkins. Adults often find themselves wanting to cook delicious fall soups and apple pies. For thousands of years we have come together over delicious fall feasts connecting with our families and communities. Here are a few fall tips you can play with this year to sync up with the season and align yourselves with the beauty of the harvest.
1. Gather
The wealth of gorgeous foods in their fullest expression is something to notice this fall. The colors are bright and warming to the soul. Our natural tendency is to gather the goods for the cold and dark winter to come. Saving seeds for the following spring, storing root vegetables to make into yummy crock-pot meals and canning some of fall’s delights make for fun family projects.
2. Transform
As the leaves fall to the ground in their bright orange and reds, there is a sense of letting go to acknowledge. Autumn is the time of transformation between the growth of summer and the dormancy of winter. Things are winding down, and once
Page 20 • Bouldercountykids.com
the harvest is complete, there is an opportunity to follow the inward flow to selfinquiry and discovery. If you have something to let go of, autumn is a perfect time to initiate this process.
3. Breathe
Fall is known as the season associated with the lungs in Chinese medicine. Often a time when children come home from school with upper respiratory coughs and weakness as the weather changes. It is important to strengthen the lungs in the fall. This can be done is a variety of ways, but here are a few of my favorites: Make sure you and your family exercise regularly. Pump the lungs often, so they are strong and cleansed with rigorous life-giving breath. Many foods in the fall are known to support the lungs. Root vegetables, such as onions, leeks and ginger, are supportive to the lungs. Fruits, such as apples and pears, care for the lung tissue as well. Eating with the season is a perfect way to create healthy lungs. Keep warm. As the cooler nights come rolling in, make sure you are dressed for the season NOT the day. Keep those lungs warm and cozy, and you will naturally boost your immune system.
As you watch the leaves falling from the trees becoming the earth‘s nutrients for next year’s plantings, it is more obvious that fall has the energetics that flow downward and inward (as opposed the upward and outward energetics in the spring). What are the aspects of your life that ground you and your family? Make a list and practice these grounding activities regularly in the fall. It is a nice time to take long walks in the colorful forest and feel the leaves crunching under your feet. Consider collecting nuts, pinecones and fall treasures for an altar or a fairy garden with your children. These small autumn rituals and habits help us harmonize ourselves with autumn. It is natural to sleep more, rest more and begin to tune more inward toward introspection and healing.
5. Celebrate
Lush sunflowers, tucked in with the plump orange pumpkins are an abundance to celebrate. The colors, foods and celebrations of fall are in full abundance. There is much gratitude to be observed in the beauty of the harvest. Set a seasonal outdoor table, rich with a cornucopia of color and nature’s gifts to warm the heart of any celebration. Share a gratitude blessing before your meals, as it promotes health and happiness. Light a bonfire to take away the chill of the evening and join in a circle of friends celebrating fall in its glory. Take it in! The abundance is around you and within you. Your only job is to notice and appreciate its radiance.

WHAT DO I DO NOW, ROMONA? Romona Scholder, M.A., RNCS Psychotherapist
Q
. My 15-year-old daughter decided to tell me she has been cutting and she wanted to show me. It is a complete shock to see your kid’s arms and legs with red cuts all over them. She said she did it two years ago and then felt the need to do it again because she is so sad. She is very social, seems to have friends, but says she pretends to be happy. Yes, she is going to therapy. Is there anything more I should be doing? Signed concerned mother.
A
. There are no onesize-fits-all answers to questions about adolescents and cutting. This is a serious issue and needs to be treated as such. I’m very sorry that you and your daughter have to confront this problem. Some people cut to relieve anxiety; others to self-punish; and still others to get attention in the only way that works for them. These youngsters do not usually intend to commit suicide or to seriously injure themselves, but it can happen if the cut is too deep or too close to an artery. One suggestion I have would be to
start family therapy in addition to your daughter’s personal work. I would suggest another therapist whose specialty is working with families. When a child or adolescent acts out, it is often a reflection of unresolved family issues. Children act these things out often to their own detriment. Your daughter is a member of a larger unit. Her pain and dysfunction can be better understood within the context of the family as well as through her individual therapy.
Q
. I am wondering if generations have psychological trends. It seems this upcoming generation cares nothing of manners and is very introspective with little or no social graces. I can see a natural evolution in culture but do generations think differently? Signed curious person.
A
. Yes, generations are different and have different priorities. I’m a member of the Silent Generation, the one before the Baby Boomers who precede Generation X, who are the parents of the Millenials. While there are basic principles that remain the same, such as parents love their children, how they show this love is different. For example if a Baby Boomers child’s school needs improvement, the Boomer would likely roll up his or her sleeves, pitch in and fix the problem. A Gen-X parent in response to the same problem would move
Page 22 • Bouldercountykids.com
the child to a better school. Our differences are molded by the world in which we were raised and the attitudes of our parents as well as society. Parents who lived through the depression of 1929 raised me. That affected how they taught me to think about work and money. The 1950s were a time of prosperity that influenced Baby Boomers to have different attitudes and expectations. I’ve always found it helpful to think that younger generations are going to need different strengths to cope with the world in which they will find themselves.
Q
. My husband wants us to do a staycation this summer. He thinks there is too much to do on the house and wants to save money. I think he is either too stressed out or too cheap to take a vacation. My question is if this is healthy or not? The Europeans many times take six weeks and really get away for the summer. I am thinking that getting away is a good idea for everyone. What do you think as a therapist? Signed mother of two.
A
. My definition of a staycation is not staying home and working on the house. A staycation usually means that you vacation at or close to home. You should plan to have adventures, go hiking or simply play tourist. I suppose you could visit a nearby museum or go to an art
show or maybe the zoo. How about picnics and movies or camping with the kids in the backyard; turn the phone off, don’t answer e-mails and sleep in. Doesn’t that sound like fun? Think of it as a time to put family first. This kind of vacation is not easy, and you have to have plenty of planning in place. I suspect that this is not a vacation for Mom. Most people find that going someplace else is more conducive to kicking back and letting go. All of our electric gadgets, like tablets and smart phones, conspire to counteract our attempts to achieve this blissful state. I remember being on a boat years ago off the coast of Honduras. I was scuba diving at the time. This boat had no newspapers, no TV and ship-to-shore radio for emergencies only. The state of mind was lovely and hard to achieve on a staycation.

Recipe for a Cool Summer by Betty Quiqley
T
ake one
hot August day, add sand, water and bubbles, stir in a bit of curiosity and a dash of giggles to create some really “cool” summer fun! These fantastic, open-ended sensory activities will fill hours with play, skill development, creativity and experimenting.
To create the perfect sand and water play environment you can use a delightful water table like the Sights and Sound Splash Table by Kidoozie, everyday plastic storage bins or old pots and pans. You can make room on the porch, deck or patio or even create a special spot for water and sand play in the
garden in your backyard. Once you have decided on the spot and have selected a container, just add some water to stir up the magic. To add some interest, you might toss in a few great water play toys from the recycling bin or kitchen drawers. Plastic measuring cups, spoons, water bottles and even empty pill bottles make good vessels for exploring the properties of water. Pouring and filling, using these containers or toys like Stacking Faces by ELC or Stacking Cups by Green Toys, can demonstrate the concepts of empty and full, more and less, and even help develop math skill like adding and fractions. With sponges and water the principles of absorption or concepts of wet and dry are at your child’s fingertips, or by adding a variety of small objects he or she can even test and predict what items might float or sink. Curiosity leads to learning and great feats of the imagination.
You never know when water play might turn into a science laboratory, a stage for life skills or a medium for
Page 24 • Bouldercountykids.com
storytelling. It might become a toy car wash or even a bath for the dog. By adding the water toys mentioned above and fun play things like Dirty Dogs by Alex or the Fish & Splish Boat and Fishing Gear by “B” toys, water play will take you and your child to a whole new dimension!
You can add yet another dimension by bringing sand play into the mix. Rivers will form, motes protecting great sand castles will emerge, sunken treasure will abound and strange land rovers will discover craters in the surface of the moon. There is no end to the creativity and discovery that will occur. Sand is sure to elevate the interest and play value of the experience and can evoke a sense of wonder, wet or dry. It encourages exploration of textures, material properties, shape and design. With a tub full of sand and a big bucket jam-packed with sifters, sand mills, trucks, molds and scoops like those in the Sand Mill Dump Truck Set by Kidoozie, kids will have everything they need to be ready for action in the sand pile. The sensory and play experiences provided by sand and water play are important for brain development. All of the senses: touching, smell-
ing, hearing, seeing, and even tasting are stimulated when children dive into sand and water activities.
Sensory exploration, experimenting and games of pretend can be offered not only with sand and water but also with tubs full of dried beans, rice, dry or cooked pasta, popcorn salt, pinecones, Instant Snow by Be Amazing or even through play with bubbles. For some instant fun, add dish soap to a tub of water and ta da! Tiny bubbles right before your eyes. Stir it fast and a frothy foam will appear. Wipe the foam off of the bubble liquid surface (note—foam breaks big bubbles), blow into the mixture through a straw, and big bubbles will form. Did you know bubbles are pockets of air with a liquid skin? They pop when they evaporate or if they touch something dry. Bottles of bubbles like those by Pustefix or Fubbles have special ingredients, like glycerin, to make them elastic and long lasting. Bubbles bring great joy and plenty of giggles! Bubble blowers like Magic Bubble Bear, or Pop Up Bubbles by Little Kids are nice, because the blower literally pops up from the bottle when you squeeze. The Bubble Tumbler and Bubble Machine by Little Kids help kids explore the wonder of bubbles, without spills!
BOULDER County Kids
You can make a great bubble solution with this simple tried-and-true recipe.
1 gallon warm water 1 ¼ cups Dawn Dish Soap (or Ultra Joy) 2 tbsp. Glycerin Put the warm water in an empty one-gallon milk jug, leaving room at the top for the soap and glycerin. Add the soap and glycerin to the water. For best results, let the mixture sit over night. (Note: altitude, humidity and temperature affect bubble solution.) Divorce and Relocating With Children by Jim Margulis, Esq.
I
n this fast-paced, everchanging world we live in, circumstances often times warrant a relocation to another city. There are many reasons why a relocation may become necessary: a new job opportunity, a family issue, financial circumstances, a new relationship, or perhaps just a change in environment or desire for a geographical cure. Relocation is challenging, and when children are involved, there is a specific process a parent must follow in order to be able to relocate. In Colorado, a parent who

ing party is objecting to the proposed relocation;
∆ The history and quality
of each party’s relationship with the child;
∆ The educational oppor-
tunities for the child at the existing location and the proposed new location; desires to relocate must notify the other party in writing of their request to relocate, the location where you plan to relocate, the reason for

relocation, and a proposed parenting plan relative to the new location. It is best to send this written request prior to filing a Motion to Relocate Minor Children with the Court, though you are allowed to send it after you file the motion. However, you need to send it as soon as possible. Relocating with children requires advance planning. It can take several months to obtain a hearing on the issue of relocation. If the other parent receives the written request to relocate and agrees to the attached parenting plan, you do not have to proceed with the hearing. You merely file a stipulation of the agreed upon relocation and parenting plan with the court. It is rare when a parent agrees to a relocation, for obvious reasons. The factors Colorado courts examine in making a relocation decision are as follows:
∆ The reasons the party
wishes to relocate;
∆
The presence or absence of extended family at the existing location and the proposed new location;
∆ Any advantages of the
child remaining with the primary caregiver;
∆ The anticipated impact
of the move on the child;
∆ Whether the court will
be able to fashion a reasonable parenting time schedule if the change requested is permitted;
∆
Any other relevant factors bearing on the best interest of the children. Mr. Margulis is a Boulder County attorney and a member of the Boulder County Bar Association.

Title:
The House on Mango Street
Author: Sandra Cisneros Ages: 12 and up Price: $4.86+ shipping (Amazon.com)
Avery’s Avid-Reader Corner Review by Avery Katz, age 16
Summary: Esperanza, a young girl living in a relatively poor and cramped community has dreams, hopes, and plans.
These are symbolized by her family’s house, the House on Mango Street. Esperanza looks at the house on Mango Street as simply a house she lives in with her family, and other than this, she makes it clear that there is no deeper connection. When she was younger and constantly on the move from apartment to apartment, her parents promised her a real home with a green yard, real stairs, and running water with pipes that worked. This is the primary reason she dislikes the house on Mango Street. Its sad appearance and cramped quarters are completely contrary to the idealistic home she always wanted. However, Esperanza discovers that a home isn’t everything in life. Sometimes what matters more are your family, your friends, and simply doing the things you love. The story is communicated to the reader through a series of vignettes (a short impressionistic scene that focuses on one moment or gives a trenchant impression about a character, idea, setting, or object).
What I liked About the Book: There are many reasons for liking this book, but the first is the unique way in
which it is told; through a series of vignettes. Instead of blending the entire story together, this really helps the reader to focus on important snapshots in time which will be relative in the big picture. Next, the story helps to teach a reader many life lessons. For instance, we shouldn’t always be materialistic. Sometimes, it’s things such as family that truly matter in life. Lastly, what is incredible about this book is the fact that it is based on a true story (the life story of the author). Bottom line, Sandra Cisneros’s amazing story will show readers how to make something out of nothing in a creative and enjoyable fashion.

Health Care Directory BACK TO SCHOOLHealth Tips
Top 10 Ways to Stay Healthy 1. Get plenty of rest. Most kids need at least 10-12 hours of sleep per night to keep their immune systems strong. As days get shorter it is important to move back the bedtime as well. 2. Decrease sugar consumption. Sugar decreases the immune system function. As school snacks increase, try and make sure they are healthy and nutritious and perhaps protein based in order to sustain energy throughout the day and increase learning ability. As the fall holidays increase, be mindful of the increasing influx of sugary treats and try to set limits and maintain healthy eat habits. 3. Wash your hands, using friction for 20 seconds or as long as it takes to sing “Happy Birthday”, SLOWLY. 4. Teach your kids to sneeze into your arm crux to prevent the spread of germs. 5. Outdoor exercise everyday. You must have the appropriate SPF on you and your kids skin but it is important not to underestimate the power of even a few minutes of sun and natural light every day. Sunlight affects moods positively and is a natural anti-depressant. 6. During colder weather always wear a hat and scarf. It will protect the “wind gate” behind the neck and keep you warmer and healthier throughout the winter months. 7. Keep an herbal pharmacy on hand to use at the first signs of a cold. Talk to an herbalist or licensed acupuncturist to find out what you should stock up on. Some herbs can really help if taken in the early stages. 8. Eat lots of apples (and other seasonal fruits and veggies). Apples have been shown to strengthen your immune system by giving you a boost of Vitamin C and phytonutrients. Try for for 2-3 servings per day. 9. Add Humidifiers to the home. Fall dryness contributes to colds and flus that can develop during this time of year. Adding moisture to the home can help combat sinus and respiratory infections that can develop during the fall. Using a net pot can also useful. 10. Be proactive about preventing ear infections. Warm up garlic oil to body temp and add a dropper full to each ear canal. Ear candling can also be a solution for good ear health.
