TAKING THE FAMILY TO JAPAN by Jennifer Martin
J
apan is an amazing country and a great destination for families. It is on the expensive side, but you can find reasonable lodging and meals even in Tokyo. Getting there is a long journey and if you can swing business class tickets the flight will be much more comfortable. We were able to get business class from Los Angeles to Tokyo through a discount company called First Business Flights that was under $3000 per ticket. Before you go you may want to look into Japan Rail (JR) passes. They have to be ordered before you go. Check out JRPass.com. Children ages 6-11 run half-price. There are one-week, twoweek and three-week passes. They mail you a voucher and you get your passes at the rail stations and you are ready to go. Carefree Travel in Boulder took care of ours. Give yourself a few weeks to get them in time. Coach is really just as nice BOULDER

as first class seats and you can reserve seats in advance. There are some private rail areas the JR passes do not cover but are not very expensive and sometimes there are very interesting scenic rail lines. Some ferries are included along with some of the scenic loop buses so check your itinerary before you go. Supplemental tickets can usually be bought with credit cards. The bullet trains are amazingly fast and right on time. You may have difficulty reading the boards, but as long as you know the time your train leaves and the time you get off you can count on them being spot on. The trains are clean and quite comfortable. Note they only give you a minute to get off and on so be 3000 CENTER GREEN DRIVE

ready with your gear before the train stops or leaves. Hold on to your tickets! The Japanese have you show your ticket in the beginning and usually you have to show it to exit. Subways and trains have exits and you need your pass or ticket to exit. If you buy a train ticket you must show it or put it through the slot at the finish or they can charge you the price of the ticket all over again. But, if you find your ticket they will give you your money back. That will also be true on buses and some sites you might visit so just hold on to them! Many cities like Tokyo offer subway passes. Those can make your traveli n g m u c h m o r e c o n v enient. They have 24-, 48-, and 72-hour passes, which cover the Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway lines that cover over 200 stations throughout the city. This is effectively a Tokyo Tourist Pass, as a foreign passport is required to purchase it. Public transportation is well-organized and can get you most places. Taxis are expensive and Uber runs about the same price. The Airport Limo in Tokyo runs about $30 per person and will
get you to your hotel or near by as well. You can check out a shared shuttle. A very convenient service offered in many hotels and inns is shipping your bags to the next hotel. The cost is about $15 and well worth the hassle of not lugging your stuff around with you. Even with that feature you should pack light and invest in a light weight spinner. Most hotels have toothbrushes, many have pajamas or kimonos, and one hotel we stayed in had a cell phone you could borrow. Wifi is common so turn off your data and use wifi to make calls or use Whats App or Skype on your smart phone, Food in Japan is very clean and healthy generally. Small restaurants may focus on sushi and sashimi, or noodle dishes, tempura, yakitori (skewered meats), Wagyu beef which is grilled at your table, sukiyaki or hot pots which cook at your table with your choice of broth and meats and veggies. Breakfast in Japan usually consists of miso soup, grilled fish, rice, fermented soy beans, seaweed and pickled vegetables. Most hotels offer Western choices as well. Markets can be fun places to visit and many times have interesting foods to try. Be mindful of where you eat as the Japanese are very proper about food so you need to always take your garbage with you. They keep everything clean and tidy. A traditional Japanese meal can be a really fun and sometimes very expensive event but one to always remember. Most courses will consist of many dishes and varieties of Japanese delica-
cies. Book yourselves at a Ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) where you will sleep in matted rooms with futons on the floor with buckwheat pillows, enjoy Japanese baths (onsens) and the ambience of tradition. Some meals are provided right in your room. A traditional tea is also a lovely thing to experience. Ask a lot of questions on proper etiquette and you will learn some interesting things you will remember for a lifetime. When I travel, I usually use ATM for the best rate. Lawson Station had the best rates and was only about a $2 charge for about $500 in cash. Seven Elevens are also convenient but they charge quite a bit more. Make sure you have a credit card that doesn’t charge international fees and if they ask for a choice of Yen or Dollar conversion choose Yen as your credit card company will do
BOULDER COUNTY KIDS
a better job on the conversion rate. Not all restaurants take credit cards so always have some cash with you. 100 yen coins come in handy for bottled water or snacks in vending machines. They are EVERYWHERE! While you are in Japan it is important to see some of the Shinto shrines and Buddhist Temples. They are an interesting experience. We were lucky enough to see a Shinto wedding and it was truly an interesting event. Gardens are another place to make time for. Many businessmen and locals take a little time out to relax and enjoy the beauty and serenity of these gardens. When we were in Toyko, we went to the Mori Building Digital Art Museum. Your kids will marvel at the technology of digital imagery. Spend a few hours there, you will love it. The train ride to the area is quite fun as well as you circle around the har-
bor area. Check out borderless.teamlab.art. It is totally cool. Order your tickets in advance to avoid long lines. Another fun thing in Tokyo are the hedgehog cafes. Pets are not common in Tokyo as it is such a large city and space is limited. They also have cats and puppies and you pay by the hour. Presents! Be prepared to be wowed by presents from the Japanese. They love presents
and they love giving things. They are very generous in nature and very polite. They love nice wrapping and you don’t have to spend a lot but try and make the package special for them. I really encourage you and your family to go to Japan. There is so much to do and so much to see and so much to learn.

Dragonflies
by Dr. Oakleigh Thorne, II
like dragonflies! I remember as a little boy how I would watch them darting back and forth over the lake where I grew up on Long Island, New York. Many years later, I used the drawing of the dragonfly shown in the picture as a trademark for our Thorne Natural Science School, which is now just simply called Thorne Summer Camp. This happened ten years ago when we changed our organization’s name from Thorne Ecological Institute to Thorne Nature Experience and adopted a new logo. Now my daughter Sarah uses the same dragonfly drawing for her Science Kids program in northern Wyoming. Dragonflies are insects of the order Odonata. They have four transparent wings
with black veins. The wings stick straight out in flight and when they come to rest on a plant of sprig, unlike the more delicate damselflies that fold their wings over their backs when at rest. Dragonflies are strong flyers. They are also predators, which means they prey on and eat other insects, such as gnats, midges, and mosquitoes. Sometimes they catch and eat larger insects, like butterflies, moths, damselflies, and even smaller dragonflies. A dragonfly may eat up to a fifth of its body weight in one day. They are efficient hunters so they are able to catch up to 95% of the prey that they chase. Dragonflies and relative species are an ancient group. Fossils of very large dragonflies have been found
Page 8 • www.bouldercountykids.com
that had wingspans up to 30 inches! These lived about 325 million years ago and their fossils are found in Upper Carboniferous rocks. Today there are about 3000 species of dragonflies. Some are brightly colored. Many have brilliant iridescent colors. Most live in the tropics. There are fewer in the temperate zone where Boulder County is located. In general, the loss of wetland habitats around the world due to human developments have threatened dragonfly populations. Also the use of pesticides can be toxic to dragonflies, especially when they eat other insects that have been sprayed. Dragonflies have relatively large heads with very short antenna and two amazing compound eyes made up of many thousand units called ommatidia. They also have three simple eyes called ocelli. They have biting mouthparts that are ideal for catching prey. The aquatic (underwater) larval stage of the dragonfly is called a nymph or naiad. The nymphs are also voracious predators. They eat almost any living thing smaller than they are, like bloodworms, tadpoles, and small fish. They stay in the nymph stage for several years, liv-
ing in fresh water. When they eventually come out of the water and have wings, as adults able to fly, they may live only a few days or weeks during which time they mate and lay eggs. When these hatch, they become small nymphs that moult many times as they grow. Images of dragonflies are often used in jewellery designs. For some Native American tribes, dragonflies are a sign of swiftness and activity. They represent pure water to the Navajo. Their images are used in Hopi rock art, in Zuni pottery, and Pueblo necklaces. Find a local pond or swamp where you can observe dragonflies during the summer months. Crestview Elementary School in Boulder has a natural area called Habitat where I often go to watch dragonflies. I usually see three or four different kinds. I hope you will learn to enjoy watching these beautiful creatures as I have.

WHAT DO I DO NOW, ROMONA?
Romona Scholder, M.A., RNCS Psychotherapist
Q
My husband is leaving me. I am concerned about the children and don’t want them to have abandonment issues. They are girls ages 10 and 12 and I know this is going to be very hard on them. Their father is planning on moving out of state. Is there anything I can do to help them cope with an absent father? Signed future divorcee.
A
I’m sorry your family is going through a divorce. This is difficult under the best of circumstances. In addition to helping your children navigate the changes a divorce causes, you have the added problem of a long distance relationship with their father. Let’s talk about the divorce first. It’s important that you treat your spouse in a respectful way in front of the children. Do not be angry or accusatory toward him. Simply state your wishes calmly. Speak with him about the necessity of providing a safe and secure environment for the children devoid of any acrimony. Explain to the children that the relationship between the two of you has not been good for a while. (They probably already know that.) That you’ve tried to make it better but you’ve decided that it’s not possible. Be sure
they know that you both love them very much and that the divorce is not their fault. Your children need to be protected from conversations and comments about legal proceedings and financial arrangements. Say only nice or neutral things about your spouse or say nothing at all. I recently saw a previous patient that I’d helped through a divorce a long time ago. He thanked me for insisting that he not tell his children about their mother’s failings. He said that his children who are now adults have thanked him for his restraint. Don’t use your children as informants or weapons in the divorce battle. They shouldn’t have to choose sides. Listen to them. Encourage them to talk about their feelings and fears. You have the added task of helping them maintain a long distance relationship with their father. In order for them to deal with possible feelings of abandonment, it’s important to maintain connection. We are lucky that they are children in a digital age and will be able to Skype or phone every day. Encourage them to talk about everyday things like what happened at school or baseball practice or buying a new dress. He needs to pay attention to them daily as he would if he was still living with you. By talking to your children, you may be able to correct misunderstandings and allay fears while they are still manageable. My friend’s daughter was going to spend the summer with her Dad and was worried that her Mom was going to sell her bed! This was obviously a symbol of her fear that her Mom was going to stop loving her. We have ways to maintain daily contact, even from a
distance. As adults, we may have to lead the conversation with appropriate questions and not rely on the child to converse. Ask them about their feelings and fears and worries. There are adjustments that will have to be made as time goes on. The ability to adapt will determine the success of this new stage in life.
Q
Is stuttering a psychological disorder? My cousin had it as a child and she got over it and doesn’t stutter at all as an adult. Signed curious.
A
The causes of stuttering are murky at best. We know that stuttering will always cause anxiety and anxiety can aggravate stuttering. Small children will often stutter because their thoughts are going faster than their command of language can accommodate. There may also be a preexisting physical problem in the brain that caused the initial stuttering, which was then complicated by anxiety and social phobia. In our society we identify and single out people who don’t fit the social norm. We tease them, we laugh at and deride them, which in the case of someone who stutters, only serves to increase the anxiety with predictable results. Stutterers do not stutter while singing, which seems to indicate that different parts of the brain control each function. One of the treatments involves making speech more like singing, to use a different part of the brain. In tradition, Moses was apparently a stutterer. The anxiety caused by being abandoned by his mother and being raised among strangers,
set the stage for his affliction. Stuttering also runs in families which points to a genetic component in the brain. Speech therapy is helpful especially when the child is young. Providing a calm environment and not interrupting or finishing sentences for him is essential. Allowing them to slow down and not rush their speech can also help. Patience is imperative.
Q
We lost our father a few years ago. I am finding that my mother who lives alone is hoarding food. I would say the 90% of it goes bad and she continues to pack her refrigerator with massive amounts of food. I am trying to figure out a way to help her with this. Signed concerned daughter
A
Food hoarding is common among the e l d e r l y. T h e y a r e accustomed to buying larger and therefore cheaper quantities of food for their families and they are loathe to throwing food away unnecessarily. I imagine that having plenty of food on hand makes them feel secure in case of emergency such as not having a ride to the grocery store for a few days. There are many underlying reasons for this behavior. When they have a meal at a restaurant, because of diminished appetite they may take half of it home. They’re already appalled at the cost of the meal, so they ask for a doggie bag and the remains are put in their refrigerators and then often forgotten. Then food poisoning occurs and they end up in the ER.

SLEEP
by Kimberly Slonaker, MD
I
t’s that time of year again – back to school. And that means getting your little (or big) ones back on a regular sleep schedule. A careful transition back to earlier bed and wake times for school-aged kids, as well as good sleep hygiene practices, will help everyone in your house get some solid shut-eye so everyone wakes up rested and ready to learn and play. GETTING BACK TO A NORMAL BEDTIME Gone are the lazy days of summer where you can stay up all night and snooze until noon. Help ease your children’s transition back to an earlier bedtime starting a couple weeks before the first day of school. Move bedtime and wake time up by half an hour every 2-3 days until you get to your target times. HOW MUCH SLEEP DOES MY KID NEED? Knowing this will help you determine what exactly those target times should be. As with most things, sleep times also vary with age. Below is a list of how much sleep per day children should be getting on average: • Preschoolers (3-5 years old): 10-13 hours (including naps). • Grade Schoolers (6-12 years old): 9-12 hours.
• Teens (13-18 years old): 8-10 hours. UH OH, THEY’RE NOT GETTING ENOUGH A lot of us don’t get the recommended amount of sleep per night because so many things get in the way. But children’s brains are developing at an incredible rate, and we know sleep is a vital component of this growth. Regular sleep is imperative f o r l e a r n i n g , m e m o r y, concentration, a healthy immune system (cold and flu season is coming!), staving off obesity, and preventing behavioral and mental health problems. All of this translates into happier, healthier children who perform to the best of their ability in school and sets the stage for transitioning into amazing adults. HOW DO I HELP THEM GET MORE AND BETTER SLEEP? Keeping up healthy sleep habits night after night is the key to getting regular, adequate sleep: • Make sleep a priority. I know firsthand how so many obligations can pull you and your children away from a regular bedtime. But
Page 14 • www.bouldercountykids.com
sleep is just as important as a healthy diet and exercise to your child’s well-being, so put it right up there as a valid priority. • Stick to a routine. Keep bedtime, wake time, meal times and nap time (for the younger ones) about the same every day—including weekends. Of course there will be some variability, but try to keep it to a minimum. Children thrive on routine. • Be active during the day. Physical activity and getting outside do wonders for sleep. • Turn off those screens. Did you know that the blue light from screens such as phones, tablets, and TVs sends a signal to the wake center in your brain telling it that it’s daytime? It affects production of melatonin (the hormone that tells your body to sleep) more than other forms of light. Make sure your child is turning off their screens at least one hour before bed to give your child a chance to shut that wake center down. That means no phones in bed. • Make the bedroom conducive to sleep. Keep the lights dim before bed and the room as dark as possible overnight. Keep the house quiet after a certain hour. Black-out curtains and white noise machines are great tools. • Establish a bedtime
routine. Come up with a brief, soothing bedtime routine to help signal the mind that it’s time to wind down – for example: bath/ shower, brush teeth, quiet talk with mom or dad, short book, bed. Guided meditation (for the older ones) and breathing exercises can be invaluable in getting the mind to calm – there are several apps and YouTube videos out there, find which one works for you (the only exception to the no-phone-in-bed rule). • Be on alert for sleep problems. Frequent snoring, loud mouth breathing, and apneas (pauses in breathing while sleeping) signal a possible medical problem and poor quality sleep. Talk to your doctor if you notice any of these symptoms. STILL HAVE QUESTIONS OR PROBLEMS? If you find your family still struggling through sleep issues, first know that you are not alone—this is a very common problem. Second, there are many resources out there that address childhood sleep problems. The AAP has great tips at www.healthychildren. org/English/healthy-living/ sleep/Pages/default.aspx. And of course, your pediatrician or family provider is always there to help. Good luck getting back into the swing of things this school year, and sweet dreams! Be At Home in the World by Jen Rodehaver
n June 27th 1989, a young man from Sweden became the first au pair to travel to this country through Cultural Care au Pair. Since then, over 100,000 young foreigners (between the ages of 18 – 26) have spent twelve to twenty four months living with an American family through this cultural exchange program approved by the U.S. State Department. Some come for a gap year adventure. Others want to take college level classes and improve their English. Most want to explore this huge country with its diverse geography and culture. Imagine visiting Rocky Mountain National Park and Las Vegas in the same month! One desire is common among the individuals who jump through numerous hoops to qualify for this unique opportunity; the chance to become part of another family. Here in Boulder County there are currently 80 au pairs representing 18 countries enjoying the experience that is the Colorado lifestyle. Many have never seen snow, never traveled outside their o w n c o u n t r y, w o u l d n ’t recognize a raccoon, and are unfamiliar with certain kitchen appliances. What they bring to their host families is not easy to describe. Of course, they share their language and holidays but these are the
obvious contributions. More subtle is the exchange of perceptions, attitudes, expectations, political views, and communication styles. Host families learn how Americans are perceived in other countries. Parents with younger children discover how child rearing practices vary in other cultures. The au pair learns valuable lessons in getting along in a new household and community. Most need to stretch outside their comfort zone and do so by volunteering their time to local organizations and serving as mentors to newly arrived au pairs. One Dutch au pair jumped in recently to help a neighbor’s scout troop create a display about The Netherlands. Aside from increased cultural awareness, there are many benefits to the hosting experience. The parents gain an experienced caregiver for their children. The babies and children learn to build trust with an adult outside their traditional family unit. The natural outcome is mutual respect and essential skill building for life. When the time is up, many host families will keep in touch with their au pairs through Skype and in person visits. One local family is determined to host only Brazilian au pairs because their three children, normally picky eaters, enjoy the food prepared by the au pair. Another mom of infant twins and a preschooler had described life before the arrival of their first au pair as “barely treading water”. One year later, she and her husband have quality time to spend with each child and with each other. Their children are old enough
now to anticipate the arrival of their next au pair and understand the role she will play in their lives. “Be at Home in the World” is the motto of this program—an appropriate goal for all of us no matter where we live.

Taylor’s Blog FEAR
by Taylor Cannon
F
ear is a jagged double-edged sword. It has the power to stymie our efforts to achieve our most treasured dreams and goals. It’s also a potent, albeit imperfect, motivator. Although most of us don’t want our children to be anxiety-ridden, fearful creatures, it’s worthwhile to acknowledge the value that fear does have in our lives. It keeps us from making rash decisions, from living recklessly and taking what we have for granted. But fear must be acknowledged and kept in check in order for us to live whole-hearted, fulfilling lives. Most of us have learned this stuff by the time we reach adulthood. But how can we raise our families in compassionate courage, and pass those lessons on through the generations? I think it starts with truly understanding what it means to live courageously at a fundamental level. Many people perceive courage as having no fear at all, but the dictionary definition of the word actually describes the act of overcoming a very present fear. And any number of deeds can constitute courage. Courage is the guts that it takes to stand up to a superior for something you know in your gut is right, and it is in the deep breath you take
before you choose to jump from the high dive despite the fact that heights terrify you. It’s not particularly impressive to do any of these things if you hadn’t felt fear to begin with, but the ability to effectively quiet that doubtful voice in the back of your mind, even for a moment, is what’s at once so challenging and gratifying. The urge to shield our kids from discomfort, adversity and any harm is inarguably a natural and, in many ways, useful instinct. But in doing so, we deprive them of the essential experience of brushing themselves off and getting back up again on their own. If you’ve ever ridden a horse, you’re probably familiar with the age-old equestrian rule that a fallen rider (unless he or she is in need of medical attention) is expected to get right back up and on her horse in order to prevent the shock of what just happened to blossom into a looming, destructive fear. A child who does not believe in her own ability to care for herself in the aftermath of an accident or a crisis is
Page 16 • www.bouldercountykids.com
one who will live in fear of something terrible happening—because she can’t imagine how she’ll recover from it when it does. And here’s the thing: terrible things do happen. They happen to all of us, even if we make our beds every morning and say our prayers every night. The first-hand knowledge that we can handle it when these terrible things do eventually take place, right there in our front yards, is one of the most essential lessons we can learn on the path to living a full life. To kids, all sorts of things seem scary that are simply a part of life for adults. Your son might think it’s unthinkable to try a new food for fear of enduring the discomfort of an icky taste. If he’s never dealt with that situation before, how is he to know that such a feeling will pass and won’t actually hurt him? The only cure for that is to take a taste of everything and talk about the fact that it’s no big deal if you don’t like something; you just move on to something else and try tasting it again in a year or
two. When I was a child, I went through a period of time when I couldn’t shake the feeling that each night, there was a witch peering into my bedroom window. In order to sleep again at night, I had to take a walk out to the back yard with my patient dad to see for myself that all that the lightning bugs were doing was watching me sleep. I still remember how terrifying it was for me to step out onto the darkened lawn, even with the support and encouragement of my dad, and how much better I felt once I’d seen for myself that the dark wasn’t, in fact, hiding anything that I couldn’t face. And here’s the best news of all: courageousness breeds even more courageousness. Each time a child conquers a fear, he gains confidence in his ability to do so again. He also learns that it’s worth it to muster the gumption to do something even if it’s uncomfortable and scary, if it’s something he knows to be right.

Dirty Money by Jennifer Martin
n my recent trip to Japan, I noticed how clean the paper money was there. All the bills were crisp and clean and never seemed to be creased or folded. It made me think about money around the world and look at what I found out! According to Scientific America, “studies have piled up in recent years describing exactly how filthy—specifically how bacteria-laden our dollars and cents can be. Fecal bacteria and other pathogens may have hitched a ride from someone’s hands, nose or apron onto our cash. And yeast or mold might have taken hold, too. The result could be a durable risk to our health whenever our money changes hands. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which can cause life-threatening blood infections, can survive on our currency. The rogues’ gallery of pathogens isolated from bank notes or coins also includes: Escherichia coli (which can cause bloody diarrhea and sometimes even kidney failure or death) and Pseudonomnas aeruoginosa (which causes urinary tract and respiratory system infections). The composition of our bank notes is especially concerning—more so than that of our copper-laden coinage, which appears to be less hospitable to bacteria. U.S. notes, made from a blend of 75% cotton and 25% linen, may be more attractive to bacteria than other countries’ currency. Polymer-based bank notes used in Australia and Canada have been found to be “cleaner,” meaning more resistant to dirt and bac-
O
teria, than cotton-based ones. According to The Southern Medical Journal, studies conducted on the state of our one-dollar bills found a staggering 94% of the bills they tested contained pathogenic, or potentially pathogenic, organisms. In other words, almost every one-dollar bill you touch contains a bacterium, virus, or microorganism that causes disease. Since lower denominations of paper money are handled more often, you are more likely to find dirty money with $1 to $20 bills. The average lifespan of a coin is around 30 years, but can still be in circulation 50+ years. They never get cleaned. Paper money can reportedly carry more germs than a household toilet. And bills are a hospitable environment for gross microbes: viruses and bacteria can live on most surfaces for about 48 hours, but paper money can reportedly transport a live flu virus for up to 17 days. On that note, your cellular device is 10 times dirtier than the average toilet. Your keyboard is anywhere up to 200 times more filthy than your toilet seat. Your carpet holds a lot of germs—4000 times that of a toilet. Paper currency and coins may be a public health risk when associated with the simultaneous handling of food and could lead to the spread of nosocomial infec-
tions. Bank notes recovered from hospitals may be highly contaminated by Staphylococcus aureus. Results demonstrated that 92% of the bills were positive for cocaine. Unfortunately, there is really no good way to clean paper money. The Brown Palace in Denver used to wash your change way back when. You can run your paper money through the washing machine in your pants pocket, and then let it
air dry. Banks shred washed money. It’s recommended you wash your hands regularly, and use hand sanitizers made with witch hazel or tea tree oil. Don’t lick your fingers to count money, as that can obviously have nasty results. You should also avoid touching money and then eating food with your hands, but as that is something that happens often (restaurants, bars, food carts, football games) you should carry a pocket hand sanitizer and apply that before you eat. Also, don’t put money in your mouth, not even for a bet, and don’t put your hands near your mouth after touching money. Handle your money wisely; your health could be at risk.

n my last column on the sanctity of childhood, I offered the suggestion of reducing screen time. I did so because face-toface interaction is being replaced by screen time, for both adults and children. According to the first quarter 2016 Nielsen Company Report, the average adult in America was consuming 10 hours and 39 minutes of media a day, a rise of one hour since the same period in 2015. In October of 2017, NPR reported that screen
time was also on an uptick for children. From what

I understand, the increased screen time negatively effects brain development in children, and overall health and well-being for both adults and children. If that screen time were to be reduced and replaced by positive face-to-face interactions, children would benefit, as would your bond with your child. A direct correlation has been shown to exist between brain development and the number and quality of face-to-face interactions a child has. The more adults sing, talk, play, read aloud to and otherwise lovingly interact with their children, the greater their children’s language and brain development, and their social-emotional health. After having read about the above effects of screen time on you and your children, if you are inspired to reduce your screen time or change any other habit. I offer this BEST personal decision guide:
you feel and what you gain and lose because of your habit. Take on the role of observer, as though you are watching yourself like you would a movie character. For example, when you consume media, you may be noticing that you feel lonely, tired, frustrated, overwhelmed, bored, curious, excited, or stressed. What you might be getting is connection, rest and relaxation, pleasure, a sense of accomplishment or mastery, and/or stimulation. What you might feel afterward is empty, tired, frustrated, happy, pleased, and the cost may be time lost, face-to-face connection, reduced productivity, loss of meaning and purpose, and lost sleep.
E
valuate, “Is it worth it?” You may very well decide, absolutely yes. Or, it is a little but I want a middle ground. Or, it is not at all worth what I am losing by engaging in the habit.
S
elect what you would like to do, rather than what you think you should do. Choosing change is more powerful and sustainable than guilting, shaming or “shoulding” yourself to change.
T
ake tiny steps with support from community, if you choose to make change. It is rare that a radical change of habit can be sustained. You are better off taking small steps that will actually meet the needs you are and are not meeting with your habit, as you replace it. So for exam-
BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH ple, if you notice that you are feeling tired and trying to meet a need for rest and relaxation by being behind the screen, AND are losing sleep hours, then you might want to take the step of reducing your consumption of media by 5 minutes every few days. Over time those 5 minutes will add up. Share and celebrate your changes with select members of your community who would be encouraging and understanding yet help you hold yourself accountable because they believe in your capacity to change. Such sharing will help create a circle of care for you as you struggle, and reinforcement and witnessing as you make the changes. In summary, if you are wanting to change a habit, take the BEST approach for yourself: Be curious about how the habit is effecting you; Evaluate how much of
the habit is worth keeping; Select for yourself whether you want to make changes; and, if you decide to make changes, Take tiny steps to make the changes with support from your community. What is an au pair?
An au pair is an educated young person from abroad who lives with you in your home for up to two years, cares for your children and becomes a part of your family. Flexibility An au pair can provide up to 45 hours per week of childcare on a schedule you decide, including early morning, evening and weekend coverage.
Trust Because an au pair lives in your home, mutual trust develops more quickly than with a daycare provider or nanny.
Culture Au pairs come from many countries all over the world and can share their language and culture with your family, fostering a sense of curiosity and global perspective.

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS IMAGINE A SCHOOL YOU’LL WANT TO COME TO EVERY DAY.
At WATERSHED, students learn by going off campus, working with experts, and creating solutions to real-world problems. Instead of memorizing answers for standardized tests, they might learn economics by starting a small business or master algebra by solving an engineering problem. At Watershed, students learn with a purpose. Along the way, they’re part of a close-knit community that allows them to be who they are. It’s no wonder they love coming to school every day.
