It’s absurd, absurd and a terrible plight that poor city birds don’t know daytime from night tweeting and twittering perched exhausted in trees they keep singing and singing trying to hide in the leaves their songs keep on coming all through the night as they mix up and muddle up lamplight with sunlight

News about Town... T

he Carousel Gears Up for New Summer Hours! It will increase days of operation during the rest of the summer. The Carousel of Happiness is a 501(c)3 nonprofit whose mission is to inspire happiness, well-being and service to others through stories and experiences. Almost 1 million riders have found joy since the Carousel opened in 2010 and they are thrilled to be celebrating their 10th anniversary. For the remainder of the summer, the Carousel will be open Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays from 10 am to 6 pm. Ride tickets will still cost only $2. The Carousel can also be reserved for groups of up to 9 people, call 303.258.3457 for availability and additional details. The Carousel continues to implement health protocols for the safety of visitors. Chief among these protocols is that all riders, ages 3 and up, are required to wear face masks. Disposable masks are available for purchase at the ticket counter, if needed. Additional cleaning and sanitizing is done throughout the Carousel facility for the protection of visitors, with high-touch surfaces on the carousel being sanitized every two hours. Riders are provided with hand sanitizer before and after riding, and sanitizer is also available

in the gift shop. Employee health is monitored with daily temperature checks and visitors are asked to stay home if they believe they are ill. A one-way traffic flow also has been established. After purchasing tickets outside at the front window, visitors are directed to the back patio where they will enter the Carousel house when their group is called. The number of visitors allowed to ride the Carousel is limited to 9 at a time, per Colorado’s statewide limit on gatherings. Riders are socially distanced through the use of empty rows between people in different households. After riding, visitors exit through the re-configured gift shop to allow the next group of riders to enter. The Carousel’s second-floor, including the party room, is off limits to visitors at this time. However, the Story Catcher recording booth is accessible by scheduled appointment. The Carousel’s operational plans are approved under state, county and local rules. Check out their website at www.carouselofhappiness. org or call (303) 258-3457 for more information.

rtWalk Strongmont to offer local artists a much needed venue as in-person markets are forced to cancel. Hosted by Coy Ink/Amanda Maldonado in partnership with ArtWalk Longmont, The Firehouse Art Center, and Downtown Longmont, the ArtWalk Strongmont Virtual Market series was created to show how our local artist community is #Strongmont through it all! Due to COVID-19, art fairs and markets are being cancelled. Artists are losing their ability to reach their patrons on a personal level. This Virtual Market comes to the rescue! Going beyond a typical online shop, the ArtWalk Strongmont markets are a dynamic and interactive portal to each artist’s live event. Viewers are invited to visit each artist’s studio to watch them create art LIVE, as well as purchase from their online shop, all from the comfort and safety of their home. Open to artists of all types, crafters, performers, makers. If you have any questions, please contact Amanda Maldonado (amlineberry@ gmail.com). The upcoming date is August 22nd from 11 am to 2 pm. Although vendors and artists must be from Colorado, the market is open for shopping around the world. ro w i n g G a rd e n s Farm Gala is celebrating its 21st anniversary virtually this year. We are bringing together four restaurants that have been longtime partners and friends of ours: Blackbelly, Leaf, Mateo, and River and Woods for a delicious farm to table experience from home. Guests will enjoy their choice of dinner from one of these restaurants and join us virtually to participate in a silent auction, cocktail demonstration, and a live program from our farm with a very special announcement. This year’s gala will put a wide spotlight on all of our programs at Growing Gardens that have all had to drastically adapt this year to allow us to continue to serve our community. All proceeds raised from the event will benefit Growing Gardens’ education and food donation programs for children, teens, adults, seniors, and those with differing abilities. A portions of ticket sales will also go back to our restaurant partners to support them during this time. We look forward to seeing you on August 29th! We thank you for your continued support throughout the years and helping us continue our important work into the future. Check out growinggardens.org/21st-annualfarm-gala/ to purchase tickets

N

ew guidances have been released to help local public health agencies and schools navigate openings for the Fall 2020 school year. Districts will continue to work with local public health agencies on school plans appropriate for their communities The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, in collaboration with the Colorado Department of Education, released new guidance for the fall opening of schools. The guidance will help local public health agencies work with districts and schools to ensure the safest learning environment possible during the COVID-19 pandemic. The guidance provides specific recommendations schools should consider based on the level of COVID-19 in their communities. Additionally, the guidance has age-group specific recommendations on maskwearing, physical distancing, and keeping students in cohorts. The guidelines are based on current evidence that suggests the risk of COVID-19 transmission between younger children and from younger children to adults is low, so preschools and elementary schools have different guidelines than middle schools and high schools. Executive or Public Health orders can supersede the guidance. Local public health agencies, local governments, school districts, BOCES, and charters can choose to enact stricter guidance than the state. Except where there is a public health order or other legal requirement, these are recommendations and best practices for local public health agencies to consider

as they advise the school districts in their area. Please check the link above for more information.

fter careful deliberation and discussions with local municipalities and community partners, it was decided to move the Boulder Creek Festival to July 31st through August 2nd. Team Player Productions, along with the City of Boulder, have worked together closely to choose a new date for the festival due to the ongoing situation surrounding Coronavirus (COVID-19). The top priority is the health and safety of guests, volunteers, community partners, vendors, and staff. The Boulder Creek Festival is a community tradition we will keep alive, regardless of the weekend it falls on. To continue to support these small businesses and partners, we have launched the Virtual Marketplace on our website which features all festival vendors, many of which have capabilities for online shopping. The Boulder Creek Fest is a wonderful platform for the local business community; help us show support as Boulder bounces back from this unprecedented time. Please continue to support our small businesses and we can keep the spirit of the event alive until we can all celebrate together.

“A

Safe Return to Early Child Care During COVID-19”, a free webinar, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm on Thursday, September 10, via Zoom. Parents and caregivers are

encouraged to join this webinar to gain more information and a better understanding of how early child care safety is being handled in Colorado during the COVID-19 crisis. The webinar will feature a discussion and Q&A about the strict public health precautions and safety measures local early child care centers are following to keep their children, families, and staff safe and healthy. Early child care centers have continued to respond to the essential need for child care throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Enrolling their children in child care right now can be a challenging decision for parents in need of child care. Sharing 20+ years as a teacher and director in early child care, YWCA Boulder County Director, ECE & Family Resources, Kate Hise, will share helpful information for parents exploring what to consider when enrolling infants, toddlers and pre-school aged students in child care. Persimmon Early Learning of the YWCA (formerly Children’s Alley) reopened its doors in May to ensure parents had a safe, affordable, and high-quality program for their children. Working closely with local and state health officials, YWCA Boulder County and other centers are taking stringent precautions to protect the children and families using their services. To date, the YWCA Boulder County has remained open without any COVID-19 cases. The webinar is free, and registration is required: https://bit.ly/3lAm0k5.

USDA extends free meals for all children this fall. Students can receive meals regardless of their eligibility DENVER - All children

will be able to receive nutritious meals at no charge this fall at participating school sites regardless of their eligibility status. Normally, during the school year, students receive free or reduced priced meals if they qualify based on household income or other eligibility categories. However, on Monday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture extended the option for child nutrition program sponsors to operate the Summer Food Service Program and Seamless Summer Option through as late as Dec. 31, 2020, dependent on available funding. This allows schools to offer nutritious meals to all children at no charge this fall. For more information, visit the CDE School Nutrition webpage or contact summermealprogram@cde.state. co.us.

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS The Puzzle of Learning Difficulties by Cynthia Johnson, PhD, NCSP

Let’s take a look at each area of functioning that may be assessed to see what types of information is gathered:

A

s many parents were increasingly involved with their children’s education during online schooling related to COVID19, some may have seen and experienced what they have had an inkling about for some time; their child is truly struggling with reading, writing or math efforts, or perhaps with attention or impulsivity, or maybe all of the above. If this is the case, it is important to get this figured out at the very beginning of the school year, as there is lag time between determining the best course of action, and actual implementation in a school setting. Help for students is available even if online learning is still happening in your child’s school due to COVID-19. If you’ve seen that your child is struggling, you may be asking, “What do I do now?” For parents in the situation, the next step is to get more specific information about which targeted areas and processes are most affected and causing difficulty for your child. Finding out your child’s specific areas of strengths and weaknesses is imperative; knowing areas of weakness provides explicit information regarding specific support needed while knowing areas of strengths helps to tailor interventions accordingly. The best way to find your child’s areas of strength and weakness

is through comprehensive evaluation with a qualified professional. Psychologists are trained to assess cognitive abilities, academic skills, phonological processing, language, memory/executive function and the social/ behavioral/emotional development of your child or adolescent. They then provide necessary interventions to help your child succeed.

WHAT IS THE OVERALL EVALUATION PROCESS LIKE?

Evaluations typically include a clinical interview where family, medical, social, and educational history is discussed. The interview culminates with diagnostic questions, where the psychologist and family know exactly what information is needed and the areas that need to be assessed. Following the interview, there are typically multiple assessment sessions where specific scientificallybased measures are administered. They include hands-on individual activities for the student, and rating scales to be completed by the child, parents and teacher. The

Page 20 • www.bouldercountykids.com

psychologist then creates a comprehensive report detailing assessment results and recommended interventions. All this information is then explained with the parents and child (if age-appropriate) during an in-depth feedback session.

HOW DOES EVALUATION WORK?

Evaluation is like assembling pieces of a puzzle. The assessments measure many areas of student functioning (i.e. cognitive, academic, executive function, language, motor, social/behavioral/ emotional). Each area is a piece of the puzzle. Once all necessary areas are assessed (according to the diagnostic questions determined in the interview), the psychologist “assembles the puzzle” and uses this information to identify how to help the student succeed.

Cognitive Functioning: measures the ability to process different types of information such as verbal comprehension (how the individual understands verbal information they encounter), visual-spatial abilities (how the individual integrates what they see with the world around them), nonverbal reasoning abilities, short-term memory and processing speed (the ability to quickly and efficiently process simple information). The results show a pattern of strengths and weaknesses that illustrates a pattern of learning. Academic Functioning: measures skill levels in reading, math, and written expression. Reading measures look at decoding (the ability to sounds out and identify words), oral reading fluency and reading comprehension. Math measures typically look at math problem solving such as untimed basic skills (counting, identifying shapes, etc.), and everyday applications of mathematics (time, money, word problems, etc.), geometry, and algebra. Numerical operations, such as untimed word problems, basic operations with integers, geometry, algebra, and calculus are also assessed. Math fluency includes timed tests of addition, subtraction & multiplication (if age appropriate). Measures of written expression include sentence and paragraph writing along with spelling.

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS ment results regarding student strengths/weaknesses are discussed, with a detailed look at areas of difficulty. Individually tailored recommendations for home and school are also discussed.

Phonological Processing: Defined as the detection and processing of speech sounds, phonological processing includes three areas. First, phonological awareness looks at how a student understands the sound/structure of oral language. Second, phonological memory involves the ability to recall sounds, syllables, and words. Third, phonological access looks at the speed that the student can name objects, colors, digits, and letters. In sum, phonological processing is the building blocks of reading.

Executive Function: Measures attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. It also looks at the student’s ability to regulate behavior, emotions, and thought processes. These measures include parent & teacher feedback. In-depth memory can also be assessed if necessary. These measures look at the student’s short-and longer-term memory, along with visual and auditory memory.

Language Development: Measures basic core lan guage, receptive language (the ability to understand spoken language), expressive language (the ability to use words to express oneself), language content (vocabu lary and word knowledge), and language memory (memory-dependent language tasks such as following directions). Motor Development: Measures fine and gross motor coordination skills necessary for school performance. Emotional/Social/ Behavioral Development: Checks for problems related to the diagnostic questions being assessed. It includes parent and teacher feedback. At the completion of the assessment sessions, the psychologist compiles all the information to get an overall view of student functioning. It’s the “assembling pieces of the puzzle” step, as the psychologist sees how all areas of functioning are working together or not. For instance, if a student has well-developed verbal comprehension abilities, are his or her reading skills well-developed as well? The psychologist then writes a comprehen sive report detailing all the information found. During the feedback session, assess-

Re c omme nda tions f or school are implemented in coordination with parents, teachers, support staff and the student. All individuals involved should decide on the need for a learning plan if necessary. There are two main types of learning plans for students with learning challenges. A 504 plan is a simple plan that typically involves accommodations for student learning. Accommodations are things that change how a student learns (i.e. help with notetaking, extra time to complete assignments and tests). An Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is more complex, and may involve modifications to the student curricula. Modifications are things that changes what students may learn (i.e. doing fewer problems to show mastery, alternate formats such as speaking rather than writing reports). It is important that students are taught the effective use of these interventions. Assistive technology is typically very helpful for students with reading and writing difficulties.

to prepare the child or adolescent. Prior to the day of testing, explain to younger children that they will be completing many activities (try not to use the word ‘test’), some which are simple and some that are a bit more challenging. If the student is on any medication, use on testing days will be discussed beforehand. On assessment days, it is important that the student is well-rested and has had a nutritious meal. For younger children, bring snacks as breaks will be taken. Clinicians are trained to work with students with a variety of temperaments. It is important to help make students feel comfortable and successful. We want them to be able to do their best!

hen the COVID-19 virus hit the United States this year and in mid-March we were told to work from home, it was interesting to see how nature went on as usual as if nothing had ever happened. As always, the male Red-winged Blackbirds set up their territories around Sombrero Marsh, just west of the Thorne Nature Experience office. Their song sounds like my first name: “Oak-alee,” loud and clear! When I hear it, I know that spring is finally here. I’ve been able to go out to Sombrero Marsh every day and it was fun to see the spring migration of ducks during March and April. There were a lot of Northern Shovelers and Gadwall. I

Dr. Thorne holding a male Red-winged Blackbird.

also saw Green-winged and Cinnamon Teal. I even saw some Wilson’s Phalaropes. These are small robin-sized birds that swim like a duck on the surface of the water. Later in the spring I started to hear Meadowlarks and Chorus Frogs. When a bunch of Chorus Frogs start to

Page 22 • www.bouldercountykids.com

sound off, it indeed makes a chorus! Their call sounds like running your fingernail along a comb. In March, when the first stay-at-home orders came out, there was much less car traffic in Boulder. As a result, we had some unusual wildlife coming into town from the foothills. There were three Mountain Lions seen in North Boulder. Where I live at Spruce and 21st Streets, we had a flock of Cassin’s Finches for the first time in many years. The end of April and early May marked the arrival of Common Grackles, Mourning Doves, Say’s Phoebes, and various kinds of swallows. We have a dozen nesting boxes at our Thorne office and these are mainly occupied by Tree Swallows.

We also had a pair of nesting American Robins this year. As I have mentioned before in other articles, we have a Federally-licensed bird banding station at Thorne Nature Experience. Besides blackbirds, grackles, and doves, we usually catch and band a few Brownheaded Cowbirds and House Finches. At the end of June I was able to band nineteen baby Tree Swallows in our nesting boxes! They were well feathered-out and almost ready to fly. My favorite bird is the Cliff Swallow. We usually band several hundred of them each year with my bird banding class, which was unfortunately cancelled this year because of the virus. This made me very sad. Cliff Swallows are amazing birds. They nest in colonies with one nest next to the other, made of small balls of mud mixed with saliva. In the wild they nest under sandstone cliffs, but they also nest under humanmade bridges and road culverts (where a stream goes under a street or highway). Cliff Swallows have a square tail, a buffy-colored rump, and a light crescent moon on their forehead. All swallows feed on flying insects, such as mosquitoes and gnats, so they migrate south in our winter because they need to be where there is “perpetu-

al summer” with plenty of their flying-insect food. Cliff Swallows migrate all the way to Brazil and Argentina in South America! We also have many Barn Swallows here in the summertime. They have a forked tail and rusty-colored breast and belly. You will often see them flying through traffic intersections, dodging cars, and feeding on flying insects that somehow are attracted to these areas. One theory is that mosquitoes are attracted to these intersections by the CO2 (Carbon dioxide) from the cars that are stopped at the traffic lights. During this difficult time, I hope you are getting outside for fresh air, exercise, and the enjoyment of nature. Will we ever get back to some kind of “normal?” I hope so. At least nature is always there for us!

WHAT DO I DO NOW, ROMONA?

Romona Scholder, M.A., RNCS Psychotherapist

n support of the “Black Lives Matter” movement, I decided to ask my friend, Iris, to write about her experience as a child growing up in the South. I also asked her to include her thoughts on raising an antiracist child in our society. She is an artist as well as a nurse, and is the author of a blog, “A Different Terrain.” --Romona Scholder

A Different Terrain

A

IRIS

s a child growing up in the South my neighborhood consisted of other little children like me. We were all black and lived in a tight-knit community where everyone knew everyone else. All of us had several neighbor mothers who provided several eyes on

us all. I grew up in comfort and safety. All of my world was black. My doctor, dentist and even my Santa Claus. I never wondered about race and, of course, I saw white people on television but in my mind that was another world. One very far away. I was 4 when a little white girl came to play in our neighborhood. I had never seen a white child up close and personal and naturally I was curious. I marveled at the softness of her hair but one thing amazed me over anything else was the color of her skin especially her legs. According to my mother, I was mortified and very concerned that something was wrong with the little girl. It was at that time my mother sat with me explaining there was nothing wrong with her, that she had been born that way and that her skin was her normal color. I was intrigued and wanted to know all about her. Every day she would come to play and after a while her uniqueness wore off and she was just my friend like everybody else. I think back on that day when my mama sat me down to talk to me. I had to learn about race at a young age. I learned about the good but I also had to learn about the bad. I was 5 when riding with my daddy one summer evening we passed the local skating rink. I had always wanted to skate there but daddy said it was not allowed. It was that night that the Ku Klux Klan was holding a rally. Mesmerized at the sight of a burning cross and many men dressed in white sheets it never entered my mind the significance of such a sighting. I knew from my father ’s behavior that something was very

wrong. It was that night that I had to learn the bad side of race. I had to hear that I was not allowed to skate there because I was brown. I had to learn the history of those men in sheets and what it all meant. Even though it was ugly, I had to be told for my very survival. I was young but I heard and I saw. As parents, we owe it to ourselves and our children to have honest conversations. Children are highly sensitive and it has been shown they are aware of differences as young as 4 months of age. A culturally sensitive child is a beautiful and wondrous blessing and is able to experience the world with passion and depth. Parents need to be willing to go the distance in conversations and discuss concepts such as privilege and how it helps one to navigate the world. Cultivating a sense of curiosity in our children helps them to want to expand and explore beyond their boundaries. Allowing them to ask

questions even if it feels awkward to you gives them comfort. Be willing to say “I don’t know” when you don’t. Talk about culture and different ways people celebrate holidays or events. Experiment with different food or clothing. Explore with your child. Oftentimes communities have a sameness. There may be no one of other ethnicities. Exposure to others as a young child goes a long way to fostering understanding. Children learn from their parents and parents must have the ability to look at their own biases and shine the light on themselves in order to be a vehicle for their child. Understand that it is through example children learn. Be a great one. Iris’s blog can be found online at https://mingming56.com.

UNDERSTANDING with me since then, mostly because this wasn’t really a goal that had ever occurred to me before. My objective in attending a liberal arts college was to broaden my understanding of the world and break free of the ideological framework within which I’d been raised, but prior to this class, I hadn’t actually done much of that. In the years that have passed since I last entered that crowded lecture hall, I’ve come to believe that the capacity to truly understand multiple perspectives prior to taking a stance on

Page 30 • www.bouldercountykids.com

an issue is not a skill that many adults strive to hone. But in working towards this ability, we’re really making a concerted effort to search for truth, and making a commitment to challenging our own assumptions. Curiosity and independent thought are seeds for entrepreneurship, empathy and compassion, and requisite in order to be a responsible participant of democracy. And this age of social media necessitates that we take decisive action to ensure that we’re not passively consuming false or flawed information simply because

it’s widely-shared or easy for us to hear. Don’t get me wrong—I use multiple social media platforms on a daily basis and can certainly attest to their value. While I do love a good cat video, I also find a lot of joy from these sites because they enable me to consistently stay in touch with family and friends from all over the world. Facebook shows me that my cousin has moved from Atlanta to Calgary, and that my Turkish friend from high school has just had another baby. I’m able to learn all of this without making any international calls, and I’m able to see glimpses of my loved ones’ lives that I would never see otherwise. But as we’ve all heard adnauseum by now, the proliferation of fake news on social media is a real issue that we need to contend with. Future generations will need to call on media-savvy skills with even more frequency, as the digital revolution picks up speed. The next cohort of adults will need to be populated by independent thinkers who will be equipped to fight the compulsion to take a meme at face value. They must be capable of questioning their own presumptions, even when it’s scary or uncomfortable, in order to avoid getting sucked into a technology-induced groupthink. The good news is that with the ubiquity of technology, we’ve gained access to an abundance of reliable information that can help parents

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH to prepare their children for such a future. Parental encouragement of curiosity is a powerful tool in raising an independent thinker. We all know the feeling of being bombarded by an endless stream of questions by a passionately inquisitive 8-year-old, and it can be a real challenge to address each one without getting frustrated. But it’s just as important to allow the child to think through possible answers to their question on their own—and to label this process for them. If your son asks, “Why does the red light mean stop?” you might respond by saying something like, “Hmm. That’s a great question. I don’t think I know the answer to it. What do you think are some possible reasons that red means stop?” This boosts your child’s independent reasoning skills, and also normalizes the fact that it is important and admira-

ble to be able to realize and acknowledge what you don’t know. Listening skills are also indispensable in an independent thinker. When we’re feeling stubborn and set in our ways, it’s nearly impossible to truly listen to someone who challenges our point of view. Likewise, it’s hard to remain closed-minded if we’re trying our best to hear and understand a differing perspective. Teaching kids to take a moment to really listen and understand a foreign concept can be as simple as having an exploratory discussion about a book, television show or song lyric. Eventually, these skills may develop so that they can be put to work in resolving spats between friends or siblings. And listening skills sometimes require “thinking time,” or taking a few moments to process what another individual is saying. It can be hard to

claim processing time when in the midst of a debate or general disagreement, but if our goal is to truly understand an opinion that differs from our own, it’s important to take a breath and gather our thoughts before formulating a response. Bringing free-thinking adults into the world is essential to the next generation’s ability to make the most of our rapidly-digitizing world without allowing overly-simplistic or outright false ideas to dominate. But these skills are also pre-requisites of creativity, self-reliance and compassion for those with differing experiences from our own. Let’s work together to listen more deeply, get curious and open our minds!

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH Holding on to the Lessons Learned from Our COVID-19 Crisis 4 Connect ion 4 Society

e are at a time in our history, during wh ich we a re tapping into previously underused strengths and powers, as we face the COVID-19 “pandemic,” and are entering another stage of fighting for civil rights and addressing r a c i sm a ga i n st Bl a ck s. As we tap into previously unrecognized individual and collective strength, creativity and resourcefulness, we have come to realize the essence of what matters most. If we look around us, we are seeing people galvanize. We are finding creative ways to shift production from consumer goods, to personal protective equipment for “frontline” workers. We are watching people creatively adapt and pool resources for childcare, chores, and other responsibilities. There is more time to rest, breathe and relax, even in the midst of the stress of the unknown and lost jobs. People have cut consumption of goods that may not be absolutely necessary to possess. Pollution has decreased. Business models are shifting to match the changing circumstances. Neighbors are helping each other and getting together more than “usual” - checking in on one another and creatively figuring out how to have gatherings while physically distancing. Families are gathering through various video conferencing tools.

I hope we remember the lessons of this pause:

1

New energies are getting unleashed as we shift gears to address pressing issues: the magnified view of racism that is possible as “everyday people” can document with modern technology the inexcusable hurting and murder of people of color that was previously concealed, and the reality and possibility of not enough hospital beds for people who experience life-threatening COVID-19 complications. We are seeing how COVID-19 disproportionately impacts people of color and people with chronic health conditions such as obesity and diabetes. This is leading us to look more deeply at the impacts of racism, modern lifestyle stresses, and our eating habits as a nation. We are also learning to value those we would nor-

Page 32 • www.bouldercountykids.com

mally take for granted—such as all the people that make it possible for us to have food on our tables and health care providers. This pooling and shifting of resources reminds me of one of my favorite children’s stories: Horton Hears A Who, by Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel). There are several messages in that story, including the obvious one: “A person’s a person, no matter how small!” The one that stands out to me strongly is that we all need one another to recognize threats and to show up and address them, because together we can do what we cannot do alone or in survival bunkers. As we ramp back up to life pre-stay-at-home orders, and approach the possibility of another stay-at-home order,

. We need connection and each other. We don’t have to do it alone. We can rely on one another for help, and to name and solve our most pressing issues.

2

. There are impacts to having a fast-paced consumption focused society. Those became less difficult to ignore, as we have more time to see and digest the enormity of racism, stress-induced illnesses and pollution.

3

. Maybe, we need rest and connection more than we need that extra thing that we are told we must have, and are finding out we don’t. Do we really need to enroll our kids in all kinds of extra-curricular activities? Is an activity packed vacation really a holiday? Do the piles of things we purchase add value or stress to our lives?

4

. We can help ourselves and our planet heal by consolidating car trips and consuming less.

5

. As humans, we are creative and resilient. We adapt and when given the opportunity rise to the occasion and focus on what matters most—relationships, health and well-being, and providing for basic needs. I wonder, what have been your insights? Given your insights, and some of the insights I shared, what do you want to do for yourself and your family, moving forward? Do you want to commit to developing relationships with your friends and family over buying the next product or service? What matters most to you? And what societal issues do you want to be part of solving?

What is an au pair?

An au pair is an educated young person from abroad who lives with you in your home for up to two years, cares for your children and becomes a part of your family. Flexibility An au pair can provide up to 45 hours per week of childcare on a schedule you decide, including early morning, evening and weekend coverage.

Trust Because an au pair lives in your home, mutual trust develops more quickly than with a daycare provider or nanny.

Culture Au pairs come from many countries all over the world and can share their language and culture with your family, fostering a sense of curiosity and global perspective.

August 11-13 The Annual Perseid Meteor Shower is one of the most beloved meteor showers of the year, especially in the Northern Hemisphere, where the shower peaks on warm summer nights. No matter where you live worldwide, the 2020 Perseid meteor shower will probably produce the greatest number of meteors in the mornings. On the peak mornings in 2020, the moon will be at or slightly past its last quarter phase, so moonlight will somewhat mar this year’s production. But the Perseids tend to be bright, and a good percentage of them should be able to overcome the moonlight. Who knows? You still might see up to 40 to 50 meteors per hour at the shower’s peak. The Perseids tend to be bright, so we expect a good

percentage to overcome the moonlit glare.
