Kindergarten:
How Do You Know if Your Child is Ready? Photo courtesy of Flagstaff Academy
by the Flagstaff Academy Kindergarten Team
G
etting ready for kindergarten is one of the most exciting times for a family. However, it can also be a time of stress in knowing whether your child is “kindergarten ready.” According to the Colorado Department of Education, “Kindergarten is a child’s first introduction to formal education and should serve as a supported transition between home, early learning and care, or preschool environments.” But how do you know if your child is “kindergarten ready?” While many schools and families use a general age cutoff date as the determining factor, it’s important to consider the entire picture, from the child’s age, to physical, social, and developmental factors. In other words, there is no easy answer! To help you with this decision and to assist in you and your family set your child up for a successful transition to kindergarten, we recommend the following “readiness” guidelines:
• Is your child showing interest in letters, writing their name, counting? • Does your child love to have books read to them? • If they are close to the age cutoff — have they been to preschool? • If not, have they had other opportunities for social interaction? If your child has not attended preschool, they may benefit from a preschool program to practice social skills and independence before heading to kindergarten. • If you’re considering full-day kindergarten, is your child accustomed to napping? If so, you might consider

half-day options. • Is your child interested in coloring? Can they hold a pencil/crayon/marker correctly? • Are they able to follow a routine in a day? Can they transition between activities when a plan is communicated to them? • Are they using the bathroom independently? • Can they put on their clothes independently? • Are they able to separate from parents? • Can they handle being redirected? • Are they willing to participate in an activity if it’s not their first choice? • Are they able to use words to express their needs? • Is your child self-confident or withdrawn? • Does your child understand what it means to make good choices? The reality is that most children are competent and confident in a few, if not many of these described areas. We suggest you talk to your child’s preschool teacher, or if they are not attending preschool, your child’s pedia-
trician may be a wonderful resource in making this decision. Kindergarten is an exciting time for learning and developing many major skills. Socially, your child will be interacting with a variety of classmates and teachers on a daily basis, which will require them to practice advocating for themselves and what they need. They will be beginning to read and write while learning the letter sounds and names. They will be learning how to count out loud, identify and manipulate numbers in developing their number sense. During kindergarten days, your student will have periods of lesson time with a focus on a particular learning skill, as well as time for creative play with friends, outdoors, snack and movement breaks. It is recommended that your child be able to sit for a short amount of time and stay focused on a task for at least seven minutes. Inquire at the schools you are visiting whether they do pre-enrollment readiness assessments. The state of Colorado requires that all students in a publicly funded kindergarten be assessed using a state approved school readiness assessment. The purpose of school readiness assessment is to inform the development of an individual school readiness plan in order to provide a responsive learning environment for each child. (Colorado Department of Education). You know your child’s learning and social style better than anyone and we encourage you to let that be one of your key guides. We’re blessed with a multitude of school choices in
our region, from science and technology-focused, to Montessori, Waldorf, charter schools and more. We encourage parents to visit a number of schools and bring your children along, which can be another way to gauge readiness. Is your child curious about what is happening in the classroom and do they express a desire to join in? If your child is needing more time to build social and emotional maturity skills, you might want to consider giving your child an additional year of preschool. Don’t think of it as “holding them back —know that you are giving them the gift of time to grow and develop through an extra year of experiences. Providing your child with a positive school experience and a solid foundation will allow them to thrive in kindergarten and beyond. Knowing whether they are ready is a key factor to this foundation of success.

GIVING BACK
by Dr. Oakleigh Thorne, II
T
he idea of “giving back” is certainly found in what we call Community Service, where a person gives of their time to do a service for their community, whether it be for their school, church, town, or even their state or country. I believe this starts at home when you are very young and you help your mom or dad do some chores, like sweeping the kitchen floor, washing the dishes, or getting the mail from the mailbox. By doing this, you are “giving back” to your parents in your own special way for all that they have done for you. For example, they have given you life, a home, food, clothing, and love, just to name a few.
First Junior Ranger Naturalist Crew As you are growing up and beginning to look for community service opportunities that you can do in the town where you live, I’m sure you can find many. Some are ones that have been around for a long time and some are brand new. One that started this past summer was the City of Boulder ’s Junior Ranger Naturalist Pilot Program, developed by Arian Hampel, a member of the City’s Open Space & Mountain Parks
Page 8 • www.bouldercountykids.com
(OSMP) Department. As one of his mentors, I’ve known Arian for many years. He has a deep understanding of nature, wildlife education, and outdoor skills. He wanted to share his knowledge with some of our up-and-coming youth. This pilot program included ten youth from across Boulder County (Junior Ranger Naturalists), twelve City of Boulder Rangers, five Boulder County Rangers, two Boulder County Sheriff ’s Deputies, two Environmental Educators from Colorado Parks & Wildlife, and two dedicated environmental educators from the Boulder community. The goal was to help youth 14-17 years of age to develop professional outdoor skills and then apply them in the field with the rangers. They signed a pledge: “I, on my honor, will respect my coworkers, my community, OSMP property, and the flora and fauna that inhab-
it the area. I will work with integrity and good character to protect the public trust. I will always have the courage to hold myself and others accountable for our actions. I will share what I learn with others and help preserve and protect these natural areas for future generations. I will work cooperatively as a team member to ensure we are successful as a Junior Ranger Naturalist crew. I will follow safety instructions, assist the crew in completing all tasks, and bring a positive attitude to work each day.” The program was a great success. One of the Junior Ranger Naturalists said, “This program gave me a deeper appreciation for all the natural world in general. The things we learned regarding biology and animal ecology as well as botany were very eye-opening.” The participants were later divided into small teams and went on patrol with City of
Boulder OSMP Rangers. This gave them a chance to see the day-to-day responsibilities of rangers and how they are expected to interact with the public. They also got to know the rangers better. It was indeed a good introduction to the natural resources field and the variety of jobs available. As you go through elementary, middle, and high school, it will be important to seek various community service activities. The more you give back to your community, the more in many ways you learn to be an effective member of it. When you finally get to the point of applying for college, your community service activities will be important to the admissions office. You may have very high grades and good test scores, but you also need to have shown excellent service skills and
BOULDER COUNTY KIDS
participation. Colleges are looking for “well-rounded” students who have been outstanding service-orientated members of their community, ones who are concerned about others and used to “giving back.” I truly believe that if you are this kind of a person, you will have a very happy life. You will learn that it is certainly better to give than to receive! Dr. Thorne is founder and honorary president of Thorne Nature Experience (formerly Thorne Ecological Institute) in Boulder. For over 63 years they have helped “connect youth to nature.” For information about their classes for kids, check www.thornenature.org or email info@thornenature.org or call (303) 499-3647, ext.100.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR TAX ADVANTAGES
2018 Tax Changes
by Amy Lister
Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017
O
n December 22, 2017 President Trump signed into law the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. It is said to be the most comprehensive tax reform since the 1986 Tax Reform Act, and will more than likely affect almost every individual and business in the United States. Generally speaking, the new law goes into effect for the 2018 filing period. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, is extensive and there are sweeping changes to all facets of the tax code, too many to discuss here. There are three areas, however, which could likely affect families in the Boulder County community and will be highlighted as follows. The first area of discussion is the “kiddie tax” modification. Prior to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, the net
unearned income of a child was taxed at the parents’ tax rates if the parents’ tax rates were higher than the tax rates of the child. Under the new law, net unearned income will now be taxed according to the brackets applicable to trusts and estates. This means that unearned income resulting in taxable income of only $12,501 will result in a tax rate of 37%—the highest tax bracket. The “kiddie tax” applies to a child if: (1) the child has not reached the age of 19 by the close of the tax year, or the child is a fulltime student under the age of 24; (2) the child’s unearned income exceeds $2,100; and (3) the child will not file a joint return. Unearned
Page 10 • www.bouldercountykids.com
income is from investments rather than from work, and includes interest and dividends. Another area of change is the increased child tax credit. Prior to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, a taxpayer could claim a child tax credit of up to $1,000 per qualifying child under the age of 17. The amount of the credit that could be claimed, started to get phased out at just $110,000 of AGI for married filing jointly taxpayers. Under the new law, the child tax credit has increased to $2,000 per qualifying child. In addition, a $500 nonrefundable credit is provided for certain non-child dependents. The income level at which the credit phases out has been increased to $400,000 of AGI for married filing jointly taxpayers. Lastly, prior to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, funds in a Code Sec. 529 college savings account could only be used for qualified higher education expenses. Under the new law, “qualified higher education expenses” now include tuition at an elementary or secondary public, private, or religious
school, up to a $10,000 limit per tax year. That means you don’t have to wait until your child is in college to use the funds set aside in a 529 plan. These three areas of the new tax law are just a sampling of the many changes that are in store for nearly every family starting in 2018. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 is complex, with many old tax rules being repealed or suspended and many new ones going into effect. I strongly advise you to consult with your tax preparer when planning for the 2018 filing season.

for about 15 minutes before I started to drift off to sleep. And to be honest, today’s trajectory is looking nearly identical- except I’ve got a

salad today instead of peanut butter and jelly. Every segment of the average American adult’s day is purposeful. This is especially true for someone like me— my New Englander brain has been hard-wired to walk briskly, be pathologically punctual and maximize efficiently whenever possible. My life’s objectives are productive in a broader sense, too; I eat to nourish myself, I work to make a living and feel gratified, I exercise for my mental and physical health, and then I wind down by watching TV and reading. These are all important aspects of self-care and certainly not to be diminishedbut research indicates that such an efficient, calculated schedule leaves out something equally as necessary to our health and happiness: playtime. By now, the fact that playtime is integral to child development is well-documented and relatively widely known (while still undervalued). It enables kids to learn to interact with one another socially and to be self-suf-
ficient while encouraging creativity and innovation. It’s also inarguably one of the best, most memorable parts of being a kid. Reflect on your closest childhood friendships. Were they forged over an amiable meet-cute at the elementary school water fountain? It’s likely that you learned about each other and built a connection by playing together. Without that social, mental and physical wiggle room in your schedule, who knows how your identity and sense of self-worth would’ve been shaped? U n f o r t u n a t e l y, a s w e age, our attention is often demanded by immediate basic necessities like those I listed above. We need to feed ourselves, do work that fulfills us, move our bodies and leave time to turn off our brains. But studies on the value of play for adults consistently suggest that it helps us nurture social connections and bolster our sense of self. It encourages us to smile and laugh, which increases dopamine and serotonin levels in our brains and makes us happier and more relaxed. Play also mitigates stress and deters loneliness, which many scholars refer to as a public health hazard in contemporary Western society. Play is a bit like romance or true friendship; you can’t force it, but you can leave space for it. That’s the tricky part, isn’t it? Luckily, adult humans are neurologically well-equipped to make playtime out of a wide variety of activities. Dr. Stuart
Brown, head of the National Institute for Play defines play as “something done for its own sake.” What’s fun and relaxing for you? Maybe you enjoy the process and activity of baking, or you like playing guitar. Allowing yourself to take time out of your day to do something you find enjoyable, simply for the sake of enjoyment itself, is what it means to play. And as much as I relish Dominic West’s mischievous grin, play isn’t the same as watching television or even reading. Activity is required to stimulate that mind-body connection, which is a big part of the power of play. So get an adult coloring book and carve out half an hour to focus on it. Pick out a board game and start a weekly family game night tradition. Or, just take the time to bake a batch of brownies from scratch sheerly for the pleasure of the process.
BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH EDUCATIONAL Think about it: how would your attitude and your relationships be impacted if you prioritized play like you do nutrition and exercise? Last weekend, my boyfriend and I had an exceptionally relaxing, enriching evening out together. At the end of the night, we realized we’d completely lost track of time- neither of us had even glanced at our phones in hours, and although we were sitting at a bar for the whole night, neither of us had spent more than $10 a piece. Can you guess why? We had been completely engrossed in an epic 3 hour Go Fish marathon. I doubt even gamblers in Vegas get half as enthusiastic about a card game as we did. But of course we were focused on more than just winning; we were laughing with each other, poking fun and egging one another on. The game had turned into a

sort of couples meditation for us—a way to focus on something outside of ourselves while still stimulating our minds and making us smile. We were unwinding from the week and nourishing our relationship through play. What could be better than that?

uriosity is the desire to learn or know more about something. It can be a casual interest in something new, or it can develop into an intense quest for knowledge or insight about something more specific. Whatever form it takes, curiosity is an amazing human quality that keeps us eager to learn. As adults, we know that curiosity enables us to work longer and harder and to retain the information we gather because we are personally interested. When you want to know more about
something, whether it is science, crafts, or a hobby, you can study or practice it for long periods of time often without fatigue. Things learned out of curiosity also have a tendency to stay with us longer because our interest creates a space or place in our brain where the new informa-

tion resides. The same is true with children. Children are naturally curious. When they are young, everything is new and exciting. Their sense of wonder should inspire us to look at the world with fresh eyes. The greatest gift we can give children to foster and nourish their sense of curiosity is the gift of time. Slowing down to see what happens when you touch a frost covered leaf or watch birds fly overhead helps children develop an awareness and sensitivity about what is going on around them. This awareness will lead to an even greater curiosity and lots of questions, especially as children get older and become more verbal. Slowing down also helps children develop their focus and attention span. When it comes to fostering curiosity, it is very often necessary to slow things down and give kids extra time to experience and explore their surroundings. As children develop language, curiosity is often expressed in the form of questions. These questions are a mental wondering that will arise out of their observations and experiences. The good news is that you don’t have to have all the
answers. Actually, it is best if you don’t share all the answers you have! George Lowenstein, an American educator and economist at Carnegie Mellon University, developed the concept of Gap Theory. This idea simply states that when there is a gap in our knowledge, a space between what we know and what we want to know, it is like an itch that we must scratch. By wondering with your child, you communicate that you are not the holder or keeper of all information and knowledge, and, more importantly, that there is information out there that they can learn and discover as a result of their own effort. And that is how life-long learners are born! Another powerful way to inspire and encourage curiosity is to practice it yourself. Wondering with your child, modeling how you might find information to answer a question, or just sharing things you discover all help create an environment and culture that promotes curiosity, and who knows, you might just learn something along the way! Simply look for ways every day to foster a sense of curiosity in your child and watch them grow and become life-long learners.

WHAT DO I DO NOW, ROMONA?
Romona Scholder, M.A., RNCS Psychotherapist
Q
I know they find that health issues can differ from country to country, different areas have different rates of cancer, heart disease, etc. Is that also true of mental health issues? Signed curious.
A
The World Health Organization is the entity that keeps track of issues of the prevalence of mental illness worldwide. Any way we look at it, Americans suffer from mental disorders more than anyone else. First of all, we have the “luxury” of depression according to the WHO. People who are not struggling for survival everyday have the time to think about things like happiness and personal self-fulfillment. We have higher expectations and more reasons to be disappointed. We are also more comfortable admitting to and being treated for mental problems. In many countries, if you ask someone if they suffer from depression for example, they will deny it. So the new practice is to ask the spouse, “Does your husband/wife suffer from depression?” Their answer will be closer to the truth. (That’s just an interesting aside.) Some cultures are more comfort-
able with suicide than others, less blaming and more tolerant whereas we view it as weakness and perhaps a failure of the societal system to prevent that level of despair. Companies now provide paid “Mental Health Days” that are like sick days that employees can use to tend to themselves. Many in the world try to empty their minds to rid themselves of expectation and desire and to find peace in the eradication of the self. While we extol the praises of introspection and the examination of the unconscious as well as the conscious mind. Our definition of the value of selfawareness is different. What we mean by “going deep” is the polar opposite to much of the rest of the world. We are the celebration of the individual and only rarely of the collective.
Q
I am starting to think my husband it a hypochondriac. He seems to complain about being sick a lot and is always looking for herbal remedies. He spends a fortune at the natural food stores. There is always something new wrong with him. Is there anything I can to about this?
might have? A huge industry has built up over our concerns about conditions we might have and prevention of others we don’t have yet. We used to trust our doctors and Western medicine and now we turn to health food and vitamin stores for products with which to treat ourselves. The clerk in the store has become our new adviser for all things medical. We believe that vitamins and supplements are natural and are therefore necessary and will only be good for us as well as safe. We’re left to treat ourselves with everything from probiotics for our “microbiome” (our bodies’ ecosystem of normal bacteria and other microbes which is very popular right now), to vitamin B for energy. Because we are not relying on our family doctor as much for advice and we are in charge of our own health decisions, we tend to become self-absorbed and obsessive. This makes us perfect candidates for the newest addiction in our society. Vitamins and supplements. I know people whose kitchen counters and cupboards are covered and filled with bottles from the health food store
and online outlets, all promising to solve our problems, real or perceived, to help us sleep better and extend our lives. This addiction like any other needs to be confronted by the affected person. You cannot do it for him.

As I would get frustrated, aimless or tried to achieve unrealistic goals, a friend of mine would remind me of the importance of knowing where I am and where I wanted to go. She used the example of pilots mapping their course. She would repeat, you can’t know the path to take without knowing your current location and destination. She would tell me this, every time she saw me slip into thinking that I, my child and others should have abilities, skills, resources and capacities that we did not have, or I had unspoken or unclear goals. For her, it was clear that as long as I was unclear of my path, I was following a recipe for frustration and pain.
I eventually realized that I could experience more peace and joy, if I took her pilot analogy to heart. I stopped wishing to be who I was “supposed” to be, by letting go of comparisons, and truly appreciating the unique gifts I brought to the world. This allowed me to move from comparison despair to a mind-set of acceptance and appreciation. A benefit of accepting myself at any given moment, I stopped wanting others to be different than who they were. I also started to more clearly define my goals, even if I was to do nothing and rest. By knowing and honoring what is true in the moment and what I want to achieve, I can do my best as I ask for help. To take the piloting analogy further, this means that I do not have to try to be the air traffic controller, the aeronautical engineer, the mechanic, and/or any of the other people who make the flight possible. I could rest in knowing and advancing my skills while gratefully relying on others to use their skills to help me get where I need to go. This also means that it is okay to not fly two planes at once, as much I may want to. Practically, as a parent this meant that I could relax into trusting that my child and I would get to where we needed to go in a healthy way, with realistic expectations, one step at a time by directly asking for and receiving help from members of our community. Even when we have good plans in place—with a clear map and assessment of our resources, there may be
BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH unforeseen circumstances or we may make a “wrong turn.” We may not have full awareness or understanding of the larger situation. Inevitably, we have diversions and make mistakes, as carefully as we engineer our plans. We can look at these as learning opportunities, or slip into a habit of shaming, blaming or lecturing. We can be like pilots and make adjustments, rather go into a downward unproductive cycle of finger pointing. We can make our journey into a discovery and learning opportunity. And if we make a mistake that harms others, we can apologize and make things right through our actions. We take achievements and success for granted many times. I offer that we acknowledge and celebrate them, because this helps us know what we are good at as we learn from our mistakes
and strive towards our goals. In a sense, it is an inventory of our skills and resources - not much different than adding our deposits as we balance our checkbooks. It gives us a truer picture of our world. When our children watch us be clear in K nowing ourselves, Asking for help, Learning, and Celebrating, they will follow our lead. They will watch us have more peace and surety as we move forward. They will learn to do the same, as they develop realistic expectations of us and themselves. They will know the perfection of being imperfectly human. I challenge you to let go of being who you are supposed to be, and embrace who you are as you define and move toward your goals.

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH FINANCIAL How to Make Saving Money Fun and Rewarding by Steve Carr

ost people think saving money is nearly impossible and immediate gratification is more fulfilling than watching a savings account earn interest, grow, and achieve “Savings Goals.” In addition, most people don’t believe that they have enough money at the end of each month to put into savings and many times dip into their savings (and even retirement account early) to buy something, pay a bill, or for an emergency that always seem to pop up. INVOLVE YOUR FAMILY IN THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES:
Start by making a budget. Gain control over your personal finances. A budget is simply a plan for coordinating your income vs. expenses. A budget helps you know where your money is going as opposed to wondering where your money went. ments, medication, insurance, purchasing glasses, and a new cell phone. Once you have that information, develop a monthly expense report. Add in Savings as a line item to pay yourself first, such as $25, $50 or more per month. Saving $25/month adds up to $300/year! Make savings a game. Become intentional about saving money and challenge yourself. Look over your budget and find ways to reduce the amount you spend. Cut down on a few lattes per week and make coffee at home, purchase off brand items, find sales, use coupons, buy in bulk and second-hand items, pack a lunch instead of eating out, cut subscriptions you don’t really need, play a board game at home instead of going out and spending money, and the list goes on. Reducing spending in these ways helps because small savings add up…you’ll be surprised and you’ll be the winner! Add these extra savings to your budget as mentioned above. Shop and compare. You can save even MORE money by going to a lower-cost gym to work out, lowering the cost of your cell phone plan, insurance premiums, etc. Consider switching your bank account to a credit union, known for providing lower-cost financial services: lower fees and rates on
financing, and paying higher rates on savings. Did you know that Premier Members Credit Union is offering a Money Market Account where you can earn up to 3% APY? Refinancing your mortgage or an auto loan from a bank to a credit union can typically save you hundreds of dollars each month. Discover savings in these area for additional savings and add them to your monthly savings mentioned above. Stop thinking that saving money is not rewarding and near-impossible. Finding ways to save money can be fun and very satisfying. Saving $300 per month can yield an annual savings of $3,600 a year…It’s like free money.
