INTERNATIONAL PLAY ICELAND by Debbie Ellman

I

t was my first visit to the volcanic country of Iceland, which straddles t h e m i d - A t l a n tic ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. At Thingvellir National Park you can actually stand on the edge of the continent! These two plates are moving away from each other. This is why Iceland is highly volcanic with eruptions like Eyjafallojokall back in 2012, earthquakes, hot springs, (like the Blue Lagoon), numerous geysers, and a well-developed geothermal industry. I was in Iceland to attend the International Play Iceland Conference. At Sunflower Preschool Boulder we are accredited by Nature Explore and to remain a certified Nature Explore classroom we needed nature credit for the school year. you can check out natureexplore.org for more information. Luckily, I was the one who volunteered and had the privilege of attending the conference.

Outdoor play can help create independence for children. Aside from the needed credit, I was intrigued by what I had learned about Forest Schools (Forest Schools are outdoor-oriented environments where the children spend the majority of their day outside in nature regardless of the weather

which are popular in Europe), and hoped to be able to experience something similar in Iceland. (What I did experience was more grand and inspiring than I thought possible). From my perspective as a well-seasoned early childhood teacher and past owner of Sunflower Preschool in Boulder, I could not have been happier with the philosophy and ethos of International Play Iceland. Finally, I was hearing quotes and conversation about brain research, play, nature, democracy, respect, trust, adventure, and freedom. “We know how difficult it is for those working with young children to grasp the importance of free thinking,

free flowing and self-chosen actions (what we call play) and to make sure it happens in a society that demands order and structure and achievement,” -International Play Iceland. For me, the highlight of the Iceland experience was the day we took the bus all the way to an Icelandic nature school that had me grinning from ear to ear before I even set foot off the bus. The only building in site was an unusual school building. Nothing else except otherworldly looking lava rock covered in various, vibrant shades of thick green moss. Best of all there was a stream surrounding the school with its own miniature class V rapids! Beautiful mountains in the 360º view rounded it all out. This is what I had come to see. The head teacher quickly got through her obligatory n o t e s o n K a r d a r s e l ’s philosophy and invited us to join her and a group of about a dozen children on a walk. The children led the way, and what I soon observed was that Birna and her assistant teacher allowed the children to explore and be free. No holding hands, no shouting to be careful, no paths to follow, no mud puddles to avoid, no counting heads, no fences, no traffic, no washing hands, and most of all, no FEAR. The children led us up and down the soft mossy lava rock. The landscape was filled with caves, fissures,

cracks and all kinds of holes where you could easily lose a sheep or a child. The children popped in and out of caves like the carnival game, “whack-a-mole”. The teachers near by but not hovering or squelching the children’s joy of discovery as we made our way across the volcanic landscape. After our walk and an Icelandic lunch, the children were free to play in the frigid stream. They made bridges out of wooden boards throwing them over the miniature class V rapids. Other children played with old pots and pans on a makeshift raft in the stream. (The teachers watched from the sidelines as the children directed their own play). I saw one little girl step into the stream to rescue her floating pot. She stepped into that glacial water, retrieved her pot and continued to play, no tears and no whining. I loved seeing the independence of the Icelandic children. International Play Iceland felt more like a passionate movement to Rewild Play, (a group of like-minded early childhood professionals who believe that children benefit from risky play and less adult interference), than an early childhood conference one might attend to obtain missing credits. The ideas were vast and I came away

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS

from the experience feeling hopeful and energized. “Early childhood is the most important time for brain development. It is the time in children’s lives when they start building their brain connections and ultimately the work we will do will shape theirs forever,” said Tom Shea of International Play Iceland. Many of my ideas were challenged and I came away from the conference with new ways of thinking about the early years. Basically I learned to trust children’s innate abilities more, to allow more time for the children to make their own rules and follow their lead and trust more in the process of play. We need to allow our children the freedom to make choices, and the freedom to play. Debra King Ellman founded Sunflower Preschool in 1981. For 35 years she worked to develop a science-based, outdoor-oriented, hands-on curriculum. The school is a reflection of her love of young children, nature, science, and plants and is the only Nature Explore Certified classroom in Boulder. Debbie Ellman retired from Sunflower in September 2016. Her daughter, Marisa Ellman is the new owner/operator. SCIENCE is COOL!

by Dr. Oakleigh Thorne, II

I

love science. As a scientist myself, I have seen some amazing discoveries and advancements in my 88 years on this Earth. Have you heard of the Scientific Method? It is the basis of all science. It starts with observations from which you may think of questions that need to be answered. You then think that you have figured out a possible “truth” that needs to be tested. Scientists call this a hypothesis. The trick now is to test it, perhaps by creating an experiment or by making more detailed observations or measurements. We call this scientific research. There is a lot of pure research that is needed to prove an idea or theory that you may have in your

head or that you may have developed through observing, testing, questioning, or perhaps just thinking! Good scientists are always very thorough and are happy to work with other scientists to test or retest their results. Good scientists are always seeking the truth. Luckily, Boulder has over 24 science programs for children, too many to list. Thorne Nature Experience, being the oldest, started 60 years ago! Their main purpose is to connect kids to nature so they can see science “in the wild.” Nature is a great teacher. There’s a lot to observe when one is outdoors in nature. Early scientists made this connection. That’s how science got started. Aristotle noticed that “one bush does

Page 8 • www.bouldercountykids.com

not house two robins.” What he was observing was territorial bird behavior. Male birds hold and defend territories and will usually not allow another male of the same kind into their territory. In the USA, we have many of the best scientists in the World. We have great research universities and Federal support programs like the National Science Foundation, for example. Right here in Boulder we have research institutions like the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). This was the organization that originally discovered global warming and climate change decades ago. Many scientists are working on climate change research and have proven that it is caused by humans with all the emissions that we pour into the atmosphere each day, burning fossil fuels in our cars, homes, factories, etc. Yet there are many nonscientists and politicians who still deny that climate change is happening. An example of this is the case of Cody, Wyoming where in 2015 some members of the School Board tried to have references to climate change taken out of their

text books. They said that “teaching about climate change was a betrayal of the fossil fuel industry.” The students strongly objected. After listening to six hours of testimony, my brother-in-law, the former U.S. Senator Alan Simpson, a Cody resident, stood up and said: “There is climate change. It is real. I don’t know what the h--- it’s all about, but I know man is part of it, and anybody who sends someone out of this school system saying that it’s a hoax is goofy!” This is where science is important in finding the truth. I hope that you will study science in school and maybe grow up to be a good scientist yourself. At least you should always have respect for science. It’s cool!

Dr. Thorne is founder and honorary p re s i d e n t o f T h o r n e N a t u re Experience (formerly Thorne Ecological Institute) in Boulder. For 63 years they have helped “connect youth to nature!” For information about their programs for kids, check their website at www.thornenature.org or please email info@thornenature.org or call (303) 499-3647, ext. 100

LYNNE MILOT’S BOOK SUGGESTIONS Lynne Millot of Grandrabbits Toy Shoppe shares her book picks

T

he American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents read aloud with their children at a young age for good reason: studies conclude that this is an effective way to stimulate brain development, and it’s a great activity to increase emotional connectivity between parent and child. Encouraging a sense of trust and comfort between parent and child can help cultivate resilience and emotional stability. What’s more, reading as a family each evening adds another element of physical closeness to a child’s nightly routine that teaches him or her that it’s okay to count on some things in life. No matter how bad, good or simply abnormal your day has been, you can feel confident that it will conclude by sharing and discussing a good story together. The ritual of daily reading with your child also introduces them to the value of reading—a habit that will serve them all their lives. When kids see their parents prioritizing reading time, they learn that auto-didacticism is just another part of being an adult, and in time they will seek to imitate it. The urge to read in kids who grew up reading with their parents can even be a subconscious calling; my father read at least one book to me every night until I was in middle school,

and to this day I need to read before sleep and respect others who do the same. To me, the passion and curiosity behind the will to pick up a book is immeasurably admirable, and I am constantly working to nurture this trait in myself. Books in particular that encourage a healthy balance of thinking and feeling are especially poignant in this era of high political tensions. Sue deGennaro’s The Pros and Cons of Being a Frog explores the reasoning associated with doing what you want to do when it disturbs the people you love. Salina Yoon’s Be a Friend tells the story of a boy who communicates a little differently than those around him, and how he finally finds acceptance in a friend who is truly listening. A Tale of Two Beasts by Fiona Roberts offers a story told from the perspective of two protagonists, and emphasizes the utility of trying to see the world through someone else’s eyes. And readers learn healthy ways to deal with negative emotions in Plenty of Love To Go Around by Emma Chichester Clark. Gaining a sense of emotional intelligence and a positive understanding of the way the world works, as is evident in the aforementioned titles, is just a bonus of cultivating regular reading habits. She was the scholarship director at Jarrow Montessori School when I got the idea to create a business to hire scholarship moms. With no experience in retail, (but confident she could figure it out), she opened Grandrabbits Toy Shoppe, a 3,000 sq. ft. store, in the Village Shopping Center at 2525 Arapahoe Avenue in October of 1977. Since then, the store has expanded to 7000 sq. ft. and she has added two more stores in Broomfield and Westminster. “I love my job and the opportunity to build community and be an advocate for the well being of all children.” Children’s books are her passion as well as educational toys. She has three daughters and five grandchildren You can find out more about Lynne and Grandrabbits Toy Shoppe at www. grtoys.com or call (303) 443-0780 for more information or questions.

BOULDER COUNTYFINANCIAL KIDS HEALTH UNDERSTANDING YOUR TAX ADVANTAGES

2017 Tax Changes

by Amy Lister

529 Savings Plan Tax Planning Benefits

A

s a parent, how many times have you heard the phrase: “It’s never too early to start saving for college”? If you’re like me, you’ve heard it too many times to keep count. Lots of good-hearted people are often quick to make the statement, but in my experience few of those people have ever offered any suggestions as to how to start saving. Until now. What if I told you about a savings plan that will not only help ease the burden of paying for college, but also qualifies for federal and state tax benefits? Too good to be true? Not necessarily. Qualified tuition plans, or simply 529 plans, established under IRC Sec. 529, allow parents and grandparents to set up accounts for children and grandchildren before they reach college age

to fund future higher education expenses. Once established, these accounts qualify for both favorable federal and state tax benefits.

Colorado State Income Tax Benefits

If you are a Colorado resident, you can deduct contributions made to certain qualified tuition plans from your Colorado state income tax. A qualified tuition plan is a “529 College Savings Plan” administered by CollegeInvest. CollegeInvest has the ONLY 529 plan in Colorado that provides the state income tax deduction. Earnings on contributions also grow tax-free and distributions are non-taxable for Colorado income tax purposes, as long as the funds are withdrawn for eligible expenses. There are also no income limits in contributing to a 529 plan in Colorado. Contributions are not limited to children or grandchildren. There is absolutely no requirement that the beneficiary be related to the contributor. If you are not the account owner, there are

three additional fields to complete on your Colorado income tax return, however. You will need to know the account owner’s social security number, account owner’s name, and the total contribution you are claiming as a deduction.

Federal Tax Benefits

Contributions to a 529 plan qualify for the annual federal gift tax exclusion. An individual can give up to $14,000 (for 2017) per beneficiary without incurring a gift tax or needing to report the gift on a tax return. Earnings on the contributions grow tax-free and distributions are non-taxable as long as the funds are withdrawn for eligible expenses. Eligible expenses include: tuition, required fees, books and supplies, certain room and board costs, computer or peripheral equipment, computer software, and Internet access. A word of caution though, when distributions are taken and are used for non-education expenses, then the earnings do become taxable and they are subject to a 10% penalty. There are no AGI-based phase-out rules for making contributions to qualified tuition plans.

In Summary

The fundamental benefit of a qualified tuition plan is its tax-free growth and distributions are non-taxable, for both Federal and State income tax. As long as the funds are used for the designated beneficiary’s qualified higher education expenses,

Page 16 • www.bouldercountykids.com

distributions are non-taxable to the beneficiary. A secondary benefit, as a Colorado resident, contributions are eligible for a specific state income tax deduction. While it might not be too early to start saving for college, it’s also not too late. Whether your child or grandchild or niece or nephew or even your best friend’s child is 18 years from attending college or only two years away, you could be benefiting from saving for their future higher education expenses. Tax laws associated with qualified tuition plans are intricate and can be complicated. I strongly advise you to consult with your tax preparer when considering a qualified tuition plan contribution. Q

My neighbor has just gone through a divorce. I can tell it is hard on her and her children. Is there anything I can do the help them? Signed concerned neighbor.

A

First of all, the good news: The vast number of children endure divorce well; it may take a while to adjust, even up to 2 years, but adjustment will happen. Only approximately 15% of children of divorce experience problems into adulthood. Although anything that happens to us leaves a mark, we will always be “children of divorce” and therefore aware relationships can be temporary, except of course for parental relationships which need to be maintained and reinforced-this is where you come in. The initial time involving the divorce is the hardest on children. They need to be protected from the conflict and rancor happening around the actual divorce. They do not need to see their parent break down emotionally or blaming the other partner for being the one at fault. I was approached by a patient on the street I’d not seen for 15 years who thanked me for discouraging him from telling his teenaged children what he thought about their mother

during the divorce. His children, now adults, thanked him as well. If you can, make yourself available to your neighbor and her children welcoming them into your home as a place of comfort and security. This will be a very helpful alternative to the kids going to their rooms to escape altercations between the parents. Taking the children to the movies or for a picnic gives parents time and privacy to iron out problems. Accepting divorce as one of the vagaries of life and not the fault of the children may enable the children to retain a more fulfilling hold on life. That is, the parents are not divorcing their children, but each other.

Q

I was watching PBS the other day and it had a speaker talking about listening to your thoughts and that sometimes thoughts are negative and not always truthful. Do you think that the same for dreams? Should you always believe your dreams? Signed curious.

A

I assume your PBS special referred to negative self-talk where you unconsciously convince yourself you can’t accomplish something or you are certain to fail. Listening to yourself repeat “you don’t deserve to succeed” has an uncanny way of influencing outcomes. But does that also hold true with dreams? I’ve never looked at dreams as foretellers of the future or even the truth, for that matter. Think about dreams as a continuation of your day except much of it is symbolic and metaphorical. You might be able to gain new insight into a problem or its solution or why it’s a problem in

the first place. I’ve heard of dreamers remembering where they lost something or realize that someone was lying to them, your brain noticing unconsciously then it appears in your dream. Dreams are manifestations of thoughts we struggle to make sense of. We are the ones giving these manifestations meaning; therefore it can be helpful to examine them to learn more about our inner motivations and emotions. Everything in a dream is us—a reflection of who we are and what’s on our mind. If you have a dream about three different people, look at each person as a manifestation of those aspects of your personality—you are not only the dreamer—but the dream.

Q

Our high school’s sex education is now talking about gay relationships. I am concerned about the exposure to gay lifestyle at such a young and venerable age. Do you think this can damage my children in any way? Sign concerned parents.

A BOULDER

I nhe r e nt in your question, I hear the fear your children

may somehow be affected or infected with homosexuality if they learn about it at school. People are born homosexual and do not turn gay. The children of gay couples do not become gay because their parents are in a same-sex relationship. Knowledge about gay relationships makes a heterosexual child such as yours more informed, tolerant and compassionate. Knowledge is the antidote for fear. As a society we have always been sexually conservative, preferring abstinence to education. By the age 19, 7 out of 10 teenagers have had sex. We must arm them with facts, not admonitions like “just say no.” They need practical facts on how to protect themselves from pregnancy and disease, but also why they find themselves attracted to members of the opposite sex or not (members of the same sex). From ages 10 to 14 years, the greatest cause of death is suicide. 1 in 12 teenagers has attempted suicide. Attempted suicide among gay teenagers is at 30% around age 15. They are in your child’s sex education class and need to hear they are not pariahs, they are not alone, and there is reason to hope for happiness. 3000 CENTER GREEN DRIVE

f you’ve ever swapped one of your toys with a friend in return for one of their toys, you have bartered. Bartering is trading goods or services with another person when there is no money involved. Bartering can be traced back to 6000 BC by the Mesopotamia tribes. The Phoenicians adopted bartering to trade goods to those located in various other cities and across oceans. The Babylonians improved the bartering system. The Massachusetts Bay Colony pioneered the money system. They were also the first to mint their own silver coins in 1652 and in 1690

they issued the first paper money (American Currency) in the U.S., in order to pay for its war. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the National Banking Act (originally known as the

National Currency Act), which established the federal dollar as the sole currency of the United States. The largest bill ever produced by the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing was the $100,000 gold certificate printed between December 18, 1934, and January 9, 1935, featuring the portrait of President Woodrow Wilson on the front. These notes were used solely for transactions between Federal Reserve banks. In addition to our more common notes, the $10,000, $1,000, and $500 notes have been in circulation. The first printed checks can be traced to Britain in 1762. Their checks used serial numbers as a way to keep track of, or “check” on, them. At first, each bank sent messengers to the other banks to present checks for collection, which meant that excessive cash was being transported which was very risky. The practice evolved into the “check clearinghouses,” which was an automated network of banks that exchanged checks with each other—this is still in use for regional and national check collection.

The issuance of credit cards began in the early 1900s, when oil companies and department stores issued their own proprietary credit cards to create customer loyalty and for payment efficiency. The first bank card, “Charg-It” was introduced by Brooklyn’s Biggins’ Bank in 1946. The bank’s account holders could purchase merchandise at local merchants who would then present the charges to the bank for reimbursement. Diners Club was the first “credit card” for widespread use which began in 1949 when a man named Frank McNamara had a business dinner in New York’s Major’s Cabin Grill. When the bill arrived, Frank realized he’d forgotten his wallet and somehow managed his way out of the situation and later returned to pay for his tab. From this awkward situation, he decided there should be an alternative to cash. McNamara and his partner developed the Diners Club Card which was used mainly for travel and entertainment purposes. By 1951, they had 20,000 cardholders. Diners Club Card purchases were made on credit and had to be paid in full at the end of each month. In 1850, American Express specialized in deliveries as a competitor to the U.S. Postal Service, money orders in 1882, and then introduced traveler’s checks in 1891. The company discussed creating a travel charge card as early as 1946, but it was the launch of the rival Diners Club card that put things in motion. In 1958, the company emerged into the credit

card industry with its own charge card product used for travel and entertainment expenses. American Express soon introduced local currency credit cards in other countries. About 1 million cards were being used at about 85,000 establishments within the first five years, both in and out of the U.S. In the 1990s, the company expanded into an all-purpose card. American Express, or Amex. In 1959, the option of maintaining a “revolving balance” was introduced. This meant cardholders no longer had to pay off their full bills at the end of each cycle. While this carried the risk of accumulating finance charges, it gave customers greater flexibility in managing their money. The general-purpose credit card was born in 1966, when the Bank of America established the BankAmerica Service Corporation (now

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS

known as Visa) to banks nationwide. Also in 1966, a national credit card system was formed when a group of credit-issuing banks joined together and created the InterBank Card Association now known as MasterCard Worldwide. The wide merchant acceptance and “revolving balance” system that VISA and MasterCard offered consumers helped perpetuate the demand for their cards. Flexibility of acceptance internationally, by phone and online, offering rewards programs, as well as fraud protection has helped them maintain their unsurpassed dominance in our marketplace.

THE FUTURE EVOLUTION

The switch from the magnetic strip reader on credit cards to the EMV (Europay, MasterCard® and Visa®) compliant chip cards (also referred to as smart chips) is the biggest change in the traditional credit card. These chips are an embedded microprocessor chip that stores and protects cardholder data, and offers an enhanced security against counterfeiting or cloning. “Chip and signature” is becoming the standard authorization process in the U.S. verses the “Chip and PIN” standard used in much of the rest of the world. While the plastic card has been the standard and leader for convenience, safety and versatility for a half century, recent developments show promising alternative forms of payments including online and mobile device services such as PayPal, credit card keyfobs, cellphone apps offering P to P payment, and

payment chips implanted into electronic devices. With the sheer volume of cards in use around America and the international acceptance, the “credit card” is likely to stick around for many years to come. BOULDER COUNTY KIDS Growing Pains - Helping Ourselves and Our Kids Go Through Them

I

by Jessica Dancingheart

f we choose to stop and think about it, growing into an adult human being is physically, mentally, spiritually, developmentally and socially demanding. As adults, we may have forgotten the pains of growth spurts or new teeth erupting or the disorientation that comes from our brains advancing abilities. Some us forget the nervousness, anxiety, wonder, joy and pain of our first days of school or being on

a team or trying out a new sport or hobby or being in a new social setting. We forget

Serving ages 6 weeks to 6 years

303-665-9669

Page 20 • www.bouldercountykids.com

the vulnerability of being so dependent on our caretaker(s) to have our needs met. We have a hard time recalling the frustration, sadness, despondency and anxiety of when expectations of us were beyond our capabilities, as much as we wanted to please the adults in our lives. We may not remember the times when so much energy was going to some part of our development that we were awkward and certain gains we had in our skills got lost. On the flip side, as parents we get to watch with joy and our own pains the development of our children. We have to develop and grow through our own growing pains as parents as our parenting roles evolve. Parenting is not for the faint of heart, especially as our children are in pain, act out or otherwise struggle. We yearn and do our best to give our kids a good life. As hard as we try, our efforts are sometimes not instantly rewarded with soothed and happy children and well-adjusted children

who happily want to learn from our life experiences. It can be easy to become discouraged by the powerlessness of consoling our crying children, and the anguish of ineffectually redirecting their behavioral missteps or “acting out.” In our attempts at coping and making sense of things and wanting quick solutions, we may gravitate towards labelling our kids as colicky, defiant, disrespectful, difficult, terrible-twos, trying-threes, ferocious-fours, rebellious teens, moody, angry... you name it. We may also lapse into judging our parenting and going through some sisyphean corrective measures. What would happen if instead of labeling our kids and/ourselves, we took care of ourselves? We can stop to empathize with ourselves as a way to fill our emotional tanks and connect with our own struggle(s) and how much we love and care for our children. What if when we are tempted to pull out a label, we ask ourselves, “am I in HALT (hungry, angry, lonely or tired?) If our blood sugar is low or our energy drops from lack of food or hydration, let’s take care of our nutritional needs. If we are angry, we can check to see if our expectations of ourselves and/or our child(ren) are realistic and adjust accordingly so we can set ourselves and them up for

success. If we are lonely, let’s connect with ourselves and/ or a friend to sort through our own pain and frustration, and need/desire for peace, ease, love, and/or to make a difference and contribute to the well-being of our children, ourselves and our communities. What if we chose in the painful moments to focus on what we and our kids do well or focus on the gifts and talents we hold—innately or through practice or focus on the great intentions we and they have? These are all steps of self-care. After we take care of ourselves, by meeting our physical, mental, social, spiritual, and emotional needs, it becomes easier to be emotionally attuned to our children. We can to gauge what is going on for them. Chances are that they have the same feelings and needs we do, and they are trying to express them in ways that make it

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS difficult for us to connect to them and remember their innate goodness and their many gifts and vice versa. Following the above suggestions if not part of our habit can be difficult. So, I offer that we create the habit of setting an hourly alarm to check on and acknowledge our own feelings and needs. We can start with a simple question, “Am I in HALT?,” (hungry, angry, lonely or tired). If let’s say we are, and we can’t immediately eat, change your expectations. Connect or rest with a specific, measurable, achievable and time-bound action. So for example, if we are tired and driving our kids home, we can commit to ourselves that we will take a nap after we arrive home, eat and settle in. When this becomes an ingrained habit, our children will be self-attuned to their own internal world and learn to take care of themselves

with their own life-affirming choices. We can make the growing pains more painful by judging and labeling their side effects, or we can recognize them for what they are. We can do so by taking care of ourselves, and peeling behind the difficult behaviors to what may really be going on and becoming attuned to ourselves and our children. In that attuned state, we can be more creative and make life-affirming and conscientious choices. As with all new habits, this will take practice. Yet, when we remember how far we and our children have come by virtue of being developing human beings, we can have hope that we will succeed.
