Cover Story: Brandon Norman

O

ur cover artist is Brandon Norman. He is 8 years old now, but was 6 when he did the painting “Summer City.” This was his first painting with graphic markers at Sunflower Art Studio, and he declared it his favorite medium. He attends 2nd grade at Flagstaff Academy in Longmont, where his favorite subjects are ancient world and American history, and math. You will often find him playing games related to what he is learning in history at school. Brandon likes to play with his neighborhood friends and his 10-year-old sister. They create their own games. When his brain needs a rest, Brandon likes to watch TV shows like Phineas and Ferb or Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Currently, his favorite movies are The Lego Movie and Star Wars. Brandon likes to listen to rock music and has been playing piano since kindergarten. He is very adventurous trying new foods and hot sauces, as his family likes to experience foods from different countries. He says “My favorite foods from home are teriyaki fish and shepherd’s pie.” For dinner out, he likes to go to Mod Market and Sakura. Brandon is also currently enjoying reading The Jedi Quest book series. His goal is to read all the books in the series by the end of summer. Brandon plays soccer and football and loves going to the pool in the summer to swim and play with his friends. He is going to Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, this summer to meet with his cousins and extended family. He loves the crabs hanging out by their burrows, the pelicans diving for fish, and the snails that come out at night. He will be swimming a lot with his cousins there, too!

T he Sixth Grade Crisis

by Claudia Lewis

When my daughter was seven years old, she asked me what I did at work. I told her that my job was to teach people how to draw. She stared back at me, incredulous, and said, “You mean they forget?”

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” ~Pablo Picasso

A

sk any classroom of kindergartners how many consider themselves to be artists, and it’s likely the entire class will enthusiastically raise their hands. Pose the same question to a room full of adults, and perhaps two in ten will say yes. Why does this happen? How do we lose the joy of art making we had when we were kids? The Sixth Grade Crisis (my name for it) is probably to blame. This is a wellknown phenomenon in art education, first described in 1947 by Victor Lowenfeld. As children develop physically, cognitively, emotionally and socially, they will also develop aesthetically through several consistent and predictable phases. Between the ages of two and four, children begin mark-making, starting with bang dots and uncontrolled marks, progressing to con-

~ Howard Ikemoto

Growing Up Ar t sy trolled marks and intentional planning. They appreciate abstract, nonrepresentational works with bright colors and simple patterns. As symbol-makers from ages four to nine, children develop representational symbols to express things they know, think and feel. They begin to tell stories with their art, and the narrative becomes an important element. By nine years of age, children are making conscious aesthetic choices, and their artwork is almost entirely about personal experience. This is the phase where children tend to be the most enthusiastic about art.

Between nine and eleven, in the emerging-expertise phase, children’s art may actually regress a bit as they struggle to achieve realism. During this time, it is essential that children experience acceptance and encouragement in their efforts. Socially, children this age are highly influenced by their peers and are consumed with the desire to fit in. Sometimes their love of artistic expression can be derailed by a single person who criticizes or makes fun of their efforts. Artistic challenges emerge between the ages of 11 and 13, when children most often experience the Sixth Grade Crisis. Now, they begin to focus on finished products more than the process of making art that used to bring them joy. During this stage, children develop a sense of judgment about “good art” and “bad art” and decide either they are good at art or they aren’t. This decision— and it is a decision, not a fact —usually stands firm for the rest of their lives.

When I was a child, coloring books were strictly forbidden in our house. My father, an art teacher and museum director, was adamant that I develop naturally without the influence of the simplified and sterile symbols found in coloring books. If I wanted to create a picture of a flower or a dog, or the monster under my bed, he taught me that the obvious thing to do was to draw it myself. In kindergarten, the other kids had started developing a basic understanding of what it meant to color inside the lines, a concept that was relatively foreign to me. I didn’t want to stay inside someone else’s lines, and was labeled as having poor eye-hand coordination. Eventually though, Dad’s approach paid off. As my friends struggled for realism in their drawings, using the adult formulas they had been taught, I continued to enjoy the many forms art could take. No sixth grade crisis for me. My weakness became my strength.

Nur t uring t he Child Ar t is t

When I became an art teacher, my primary goal was to ensure my students would have a nurturing environment where they could freely explore their creativity. Learning to draw as others have drawn is simply imitation. The elements of design and principles of composition are important tools for making art and should be the foundation of any art classroom, but there is more to art than that. It’s about a visual rendering of what’s inside you, whatever form that takes. Art is about personal story and self-expression. A good art teacher designs lessons and asks the kind of questions that will encourage students to infuse their artwork with meaning at a deeper level. That’s what makes art come alive for both the maker and the viewer. What can you do to nurture the artist within your child? Start by recognizing that art is a fundamental human process. Humans, especially children, enjoy the thrill of creation. Encourage them to tell their stories. Ever since the first cave dwellers made impressions on the walls around them, people have felt a need to “make special” the world around them. A world without creativity would be sad world indeed.

T hree Essent ial Condit ions for Ar t Making

BOULDER County Kids

Educator Kenneth Beittel describes three essential conditions for making art. As a parent, you can ensure that these conditions are present in your child’s art making.

1) Art must spring from

the imagination of the creator; the child must be the source of the art, free from the influence of adult formulas.

2) An artist must express

their lived experiences. When children are simply following instructions, the art becomes irrelevant to them.

3)

Children must have the freedom to use artistic materials to symbolize personal relevance, like making unique color choices, or intentionally distorting the size of things in a drawing. In the book Art & Fear, the authors remind us that most art is made by ordinary people. “Art is rarely made by Mozart-like people—essentially there aren’t many people like that.” There are as many ways to make art as there are people in the world. You can keep the love of art alive in your child, and maybe rekindle it in yourself while you’re at it, by forgoing judgment. Stay open to the vast possibilities for self expression art provides. Go make something. It feels good!

t was 100 years ago that the last Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius) died in the Cincinnati Zoo! So this is the centennial year anniversary of the sad event. I have written here before about this amazing kind of bird. When the first settlers came to North America, there were probably somewhere between three and

five billion of these “wild pigeons.” Now there are none. Humans exterminated them in less than a century! Passenger Pigeons roosted and nested in huge colonies that were usually many

miles long and often less than a mile wide. As late as 1871, just 43 years before the last of them died, there was a nesting colony reported in Wisconsin that covered 850 square miles and contained millions of these birds! The big question now is: can scientists clone the Passenger Pigeon and actually bring the species back to life again? The genetic material in the cells of specimens, called “study skins,” that are now in various museum collections, would be the source of the DNA necessary to do the cloning. This process has been called “de-extinction.” It may sound like a “cool” thing to do, but it would be an extremely difficult task, almost impossible. The two species of extinct animals that scientists have talked about cloning are the Passenger Pigeon and the Wooly Mammoth. Right now this seems like a “mad scientist’s dream.” If it was even possible someday to do this “de-extinction” of the Passenger Pigeon, what would be some of the problems? If it was possible to recreate a male and a female of these birds, would they mate,

lay eggs, and raise young? What happened in the early 1900s when there were only a few of them still alive? In about 1900, we know that Professor Charles Otis Whitman at the University of Chicago had a small colony of Passenger Pigeons alive and in captivity. In 1902 he gave one female to the Cincinnati Zoo. They named her “Martha.” In 1903 he had twelve birds. He had been trying to breed them, but apparently they would not breed in captivity. By 1906 there were only six of his birds left alive. Finally the only Passenger Pigeon still alive was “Martha,” who died on September 1, 2014. She was the last one known. It seems clear to scientists that Passenger Pigeons, being a very “social” species, must have needed lots of others of their kind around in order to successfully get “in sync” and breed. If there were not enough of them, they apparently would not breed. This is one of the theories on why they became almost extinct so fast. Their numbers suddenly dropped down to just a few. The commercial market gunners and netters had killed off so many that the few that were left just could not build up their numbers again. So if scientists someday could “de-extinct” the Passenger Pigeon, how many would they have to re-create in order for them to breed successfully? If Professor Whitman couldn’t get his few birds to breed, it seems like we would now have to create a flock of hundreds. Could this ever be possible? If we

could do this successfully, would these birds really be “wild pigeons” again and be able to survive in our modern world? There are lots of unanswered questions. It is exciting to think of what scientists might be able to do in the future. I hope this story might get you interested in studying science. There is so much to still discover.

BOULDER County Kids HEALtH Creating Trust in Relationships

by Jessica Dancingheart

A

s some of you may recall, just before Christmas there was a breach of the Target credit card system. The breach caused a security problem for some people who made credit card purchases at Target. Yet, Target was responsible and disclosed the breach, and they took proactive measures to prevent any harm to those whose credit card numbers were or may have been stolen. Punitive responses to a weakness or mistake are all too common. Just look at the number of lawsuits and political attacks that take up airwaves because of a mistake, an error of judgment, and/or a weakness. When children watch the blame-game and experience punitive responses, their inclination might

become one of hiding the truth, just as many high-profile companies and individuals do for fear of lawsuits or a bad reputation. What can we do to help our kids so they can take the right action in the face of such enmity, just as individuals at Target did when they proactively took corrective measures? The answer is a simple set of principles that can at times

be difficult to implement especially if we feel fear or hurt or lapse into habitual ways of blaming and shaming. 1) If we feel fear or hurt, we can name the fear and hurt and separate the behavior from the person. We can reveal what is going on for us and show genuine curiosity. So rather than saying, “You are so selfish and thoughtless, we can say, “When you got home later than we agreed, I got scared. Would you be willing to tell me why you did not call me to tell me you were late? 2) When we make mistakes, we can set aside our egos and say, “I am sorry. I made a mistake when I yelled at you and called you thoughtless when you were late. Can I make it right by giving you a phone to carry with you so I can reach you

the next time you are late and I get worried? If we earnestly want to make things right, we can expect our kids to take responsibility for their part while we take responsibility for ours. 3) Rather than micromanaging our kids, we can give them chances to make their own mistakes and have their own victories. When they make mistakes, rather than saying, “I told you so, we can listen to what is going on for our children. If it seems right, we can say, “Hey, I am sorry that did not work out the way you wanted. Would you like me to continue listening, or is there anything you would like from me to support you as you get back on track? 4) For those of us who are fortunate to have children who share openly with us, when they tell us something we don’t want to hear or something distressing, we can thank them for their honesty and keep our ears open and our mouths clear of advice, unless they ask us for advice. This does not mean that we don’t set boundaries or reestablish our behavioral norms. Chances are that if we listen deeply and with an open heart, they will hold themselves up to the standards we set and more likely than not, to a higher standard than

we would, so they can bring themselves back to wholeness. 5) It is equally important that when things go well, that we take the time to celebrate and tell our kids what they do that makes life more wonderful for us and those around them. Recently, a parent confided in me that she was afraid that by telling her kid that he did something well and that she delighted in his ways of perceiving the world, that she would inflate his ego. This could be true if the feedback given is in the form of, “You are amazing. You are incredible….” Yet, if the feedback is in the form of, “Wow that was so cool to listen to you as you helped your friend with his homework. I really liked the way you explained the problem.” If they achieve a goal they set, we can notice and say, “I am so happy to see that you got all your home-

BOULDER County Kids HEALtH work done before dinnertime, just like you wanted to. Congratulations!” In summary, we can be honest about what is going on for us, we can model accountability, we can show interest in what is going on in them, we can practice trusting them to do the right thing, and we can celebrate their victories. Children naturally want to excel and be accountable, and they will if we trust them. If you need to, you can microwave the almond butter for 15-20 seconds. Store in the refrigerator. You will get a nice creamy consistency using a battery-operated milk frother instead of a wisk. About $20 at Bed, Bath and Beyond, ($15 with a coupon). So much easier! You will use it all the time!

Self-Soothing for Children by Tatum Oman

I

t feels good to be needed, but it also feels good to be needed a little bit less and have a more independent child. It is possible for a young child to learn how to self-soothe! Before going over some self-soothing techniques, I will be discussing how to recognize that your child is in need of self-soothing, signs of stress/anxiety, identifying triggers and learning what is causing them, and modeling for your child some things to do and helping them do some as well. At times,

before a child can self-soothe she/ he needs to be taught how to self-soothe. Have you ever had the thought, “Oh gosh, I didn’t want you to learn that! Your child notices what you say and do.

When Self-Soothing is Neededâ€”Signs of Anxiety A child will give indicators that s/he is in need of self-soothing prior to those moments of major distress. There may be a change of temperature, so this could look like your child is sweating when it is not hot or saying they need a blanket when it is not cold. Your child may be looking around (avoiding eye contact), experiencing a hard time concentrating, have a racing heart and shortness of breath, tense neck muscles, and/or fidgeting. Your child may be irritable, have diarrhea or use the rest room often, be fatigued, and/or have insomnia. Your child may complain of stomachaches or headaches. When a child is complaining of a stomachache/headache, or any of the other symptoms frequently, your child may be telling you that their anxiety is at a constant high level.

Identifying Triggers and What Causes Them

When anxiety continues to increase, the feeling can come out in many forms, (one of the above or possibly as explosive behavior and excessive crying). When this occurs your child is often inconsolable. Whatever just happened, or was said, was a trigger for him/her and pushed their anxiety over the top, and they no longer have control over themselves. If it is inconsistent and seems random, the child’s anxiety can stay at a high level, and any stress can tip them over. When at a constant high level, your child may benefit from professional help (one modality is play therapy), to help process their feelings and build their tolerance for anxiety.

Modeling and Reflecting Understanding We naturally reflect when we are excited or happy. It is the hard feelings that can be difficult to reflect: Hard feelings such as frustration, anger, and sadness. The next time you find yourself feeling a hard feeling: • State the hard feeling. • State the body sensations that told you what feeling you were having (eyes looking around, racing heart, tense neck). • Model a self-soothing activity. Example—“I’m angry. My voice is getting louder. I’m going to take a few deep breaths.â€? Another example—“I’m frustrated. My neck is tensing up. I’m going to go into the other room and clean the dishes.â€? Be sure to say what you are feeling and not what you believe your child is feel-

ing. Also, choose an activity that will genuinely help you to feel calmer. This will help your child accept all of their feelings and to understand them more. A way to reflect understanding can sound like, “I know you are angry.” “You’re disappointed we couldn’t stay longer.” As people we all want to feel heard and understood. By modeling acceptance of your feelings, it will help your child become more comfortable with accepting their own feelings.

Self-Soothing Techniques There are many self-soothing techniques that you can model, encourage your child to do by themselves, or do with your child. It is important to find techniques that you are comfortable with and that help you when modeling. If a modeling technique does not work for you personally, it may not work for your child. I encourage you to choose two techniques to start with and build from there. Another option with modeling is to encourage your child to do the activity with you. A few techniques that are helpful include, but are not limited to, giving yourself a hug, hiding in between pillows, stretching, moving walking, running, skipping, crawling, squeezing down your legs and arms,

BOULDER County Kids HEALtH taking a few deep breaths, drinking cold water, listening to music, or cooking. A few that you can encourage your child do on their own include jumping on a trampoline, rocking in a chair, bouncing on a big ball, sucking a sucker, eating something crunchy, riding a riding toy, playing with play dough, or pushing/pulling/pressing/ or carrying something. The last technique of carrying something can be especially helpful when transitioning into a next activity. Being tucked in snuggly can be calming and help the person to relax as well. Your child will let you know what helps them and what does not. When you notice those signs of stress decreasing, his or her anxiety is lowering. Model recognition, acceptance, and patience with yourself and feelings, and your child will learn to do the same.

Sweet like Syrup I just made a few snacks for you. by Sue Van Raes

Five Health Tips For Sweetening Things Up Avoid Artificial Sweeteners

Due to the many health risks associated with too much sugar, many folks have tried to take shortcuts using artificial sweeteners in place of the natural sweet. The media has enforced this giving the taste buds and the body the message that we are enjoying the sweet flavor without the cost. Unfortunately this is a shortcut NOT worth taking. Many artificial sweeteners create addictive patterns, cravings, and serious withdrawal symptoms. Avoid artificial sweeteners like the plague. While the mechanisms of harm may differ, they’re ALL harmful in one way or another. This includes aspartame (NutraSweet and Equal), sucralose (Splenda), and any other artificial sweeteners. Aspartame (NutraSweet and Equal) contains high amounts of phenylalanine and aspartic acid. While these amino acids are found naturally in the body, when they

are combined out of their natural ratio they can cause many side effects, such as headaches, mental confusion, dizziness, and seizures. As these amino acids break down in this out-of-balance combination, they can literally break down into a form of formaldehyde, which is toxic to the body. Splenda is the artificial sweetener otherwise known as sucralose. This sweetener has received a ton of press in the past few years, leading us to discovering not only is this sweetener made up of a high percentage of chlorine, but now recent studies show that sucralose may raise the blood sugar and insulin levels, kill off good bacteria in the GI tract, and in long term exposure, damage DNA permanently. Beware of High Fructose Corn Syrups (HFCs) used to sweeten your foods and

Page 18 • Bouldercountykids.com

drinks! HFCs are everywhere in processed foods. Soda, baked goods, candy bars, sauces, and salad dressings, and even cereal and cereal bars. HFCs may not be considered an artificial sweetener, but they have been proven to be far higher in the fructose to glucose ratio, creating a dangerous reaction in the body that can lead to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and liver disease.

Get Back to Basics

Eat a whole food diet to reset your taste buds. The body thrives when we eat our foods close to nature, whole, simple, clean, and alive. These ancient principles of eating are great guidelines on how to grocery shop, cook, and feed our bodies nourishing foods. The palate can transform back to its original and intended tasting organ as we purify our diets. When we are competing with really strong enhanced flavors found in mainstream processed foods, such as super salty foods or overly sweet sodas, we become so overstimulated by our taste buds that something like an apple or a carrot loses its appeal. Coming back to the basics with whole food eating will recalibrate your taste buds, and a lot of those strong flavors (especially sugar) will vanish from your cravings.

Use Natural Sweeteners

Sweetening your food is something many of us seek in our day-to-day meals, healthy desserts, and snacks. With the whole food eating in mind, you will notice that your palate adjusts, and what used to taste pleasantly sweet (like a soda) may now be too sweet to drink. Finding natural sweeteners to use in your baking, sauces, and creations in the kitchen is a great option to enhance your flavors while still keeping your flavors in balance. Here are some of my favorites. Raw honey is known for its antibacterial and antifungal properties. It is a pure source of sweet, and even though it is fairly high on the glycemic index scale, a little goes a very long way. The health benefits of local raw honey include naturally suppressing the common cough, aiding in a good night’s sleep (by facilitating tryptophan), and boosting immunity, to name a few. Coconut sugar, made from the sap of the coconut palm, doesn’t put stress on your blood sugar levels the same way that white sugar does. Because coconut sugar is unrefined, it retains all of its natural minerals and vitamins, so it has a higher nutrient density. Coconut sugar is easy to cook with and can be substituted 1:1 in recipes. Maple syrup, made by boiling sap from the maple tree, contains compounds that could help manage type 2 diabetes, as well as acting as anticancer and antinflammatory agents. Maple is full of many antioxidants, full of a wide range of vitamins and minerals, especially zinc and manganese. Many health

experts are now calling pure maple syrup a champion food. Xylitol is pure, and creates essentially no blood sugar response. Xylitol also comes with some benefits, such as fighting tooth decay. Xylitol is safe and a beneficial sweetener. Where is Agave syrup in this list? Agave has been discovered to have many controversial health characteristics, including a high amount of processing and a high ratio of fructose to glucose (not recommended), which is higher than high fructose corn syrup. Studies show these characteristics can result in more insulin resistance and a long-term risk of liver damage. This is information has been very deceptive as we have all heard how agave is a great healthy choice. I am still exploring all of the information, but many are saying to avoid overusing agave. If

BOULDER County Kids HEALtH you are going to use agave, it is best to use the raw and unpasteurized version to keep all the natural enzymes intact and keep that fructose level down to under 55%.

Eat a Low Glycemic Diet

If you stick to a low glycemic diet you will not only see benefits in almost every area of your health, energy, sleep, and metabolism, you will also see your sugar cravings diminish before your eyes. The glycemic index of a particular food rates the food on how quickly it turns to sugar in your bloodstream. Processed carbohydrates and refined sugars are always going to rate very high on the spectrum, whereas proteins, fats, whole grains, and some fruits will be low to moderate. There are some added tricks to lowering the glycemic index of your meal: First, you can add more protein—have some nuts

with dried fruit. Second, you can add high quality fat—put a little olive oil on that piece of bread. Third, you can add fiber or choose a high-fiber version of the food—cook brown rice instead of white. Eating a low glycemic diet is one of the quickest ways to see your health and vitality turn around. It is fairly simple and incredibly effective.

Sweeten Up Your Life

The sweet flavor has often been linked to love, pleasure, comfort, and many other soothing qualities we all yearn for in our humanness. Often, when we are not getting enough of these in our lives, we crave more sugar and overly self-soothe with the sweetness in food. Try enhancing your life with the sweetness you can find in your daily down time, in the way that you exercise, the practices you do that acti-

vate your senses in a positive way, and especially the way you love yourself. This is where the true sweetness is found. he ingredients label on a can of soup, soda or other processed food is changing in several ways. We read these labels to understand the serving size, the number of calories, kinds of fat, etc... I am a naturopathic doctor and acupuncturist, so when I am feeding my daughter, my first choice in healthy food is fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and animal protein. Fresh fruits and vegetables do not have ingredient labels. They may have a sticker that says “organic” or where they are from. When I buy eggs or a nice steak, there are no ingredients listed, but there will be choices about organic, free range, no antibiotics, grass fed, or none of the above. My first choice in food is to select food in its most natural unprocessed state. Ingredient labels are for processed food, and yes, I eat those, too. So lets learn how they are changing and what to look for.

The calories will be printed larger, and calories from fat will be removed, since research shows the type of fat is more important than the amount. The total fat will still be shown as the saturated fat and the trans fat. Cholesterol and sodium remain unchanged. Total carbohydrate now goes by total carbs. Dietary fiber and sugars and now joined by “added sugars.” Vitamins A and C have been dropped, and vitamin D and potassium have been added. Iron remains the same. The footnote on Daily Values [DV] and calories reference will still be inserted at the bottom of the list.

The other big change will be the serving size. A 12ounce soda and a 20-ounce soda are now both considered to be equal to 1 serving, since people typically drink either size in one sitting. A pint of ice cream will change from 4 servings to 2 servings. Certain packages that are larger and could be consumed in one or multiple sizes will have a “dual column” to indicate “per serving” and “per package.” This may make sense since people tend to eat more now then they did decades ago when the single Proposed Serving Size Changes

serving was established. The FDA thinks that “making the calories and serving sizes more prominent will emphasize the parts of the label that are important in addressing public health concerns like obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.” I think it is unfortunate that vitamins C and A were dropped. I also would be more interested in knowing if the food is genetically modified [GMO]. I don’t want my daughter eating GMO foods, so I avoid them by providing only organic food. Fruit, with the sticker that says it is organic is only really organic if one of the first two numbers is a 9. There was some controversy last year with “organic” food from China that was far from organic. Be sure to look for that number nine. My daughter and I watch a TV show called Good Luck Charlie. It recently ended, and we enjoyed seeing the last few episodes. Somehow I feel that these new FDA changes are a mixed bag, and though they are trying to be realistic, I am not sure they are sending the right message. My advice is to eat unlabeled real food, and when you eat food with a label then...good luck Charlie. JoHannah Reilly, ND is a naturopathic doctor and licensed acupuncturist practicing since 1980. Organizing Tips S

pring is here! Flowers are starting to bloom and the hiking trails are crowded. Spring can also mean spring cleaning and dealing with clutter so I am sharing my top-ten organizing tips that can help you get started.

1.

Start slow and small. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself. One idea is to set a timer for 10 minutes and organize. If you want to continue working after the timer goes off, you can, but if not, feel great about your accomplishment.

2. Establish priorities if you have multiple areas that you struggle with. As they say, “Rome was not built in a day.” Ideally you will work on organizing tasks when you are most naturally productive, otherwise you might not be satisfied with the results might or just end up redoing it later. 3.

Everything in your house should have a designated “Home.” Make sure everyone who lives in the home knows where those locations are. If an adult home resident doesn’t like where an item is located, have a conversation, as maybe there is a better place for it. If you can’t agree, ask an outside source for help and their unbiased opinion.

with Michele 4. “Don’t Put it Down,

Put it Away.” This is especially useful for children. Take the extra time to put a loose item in its appropriate home rather than just moving it to another temporary location.

5.

Yo u r c o m p u t e r inbox is NOT an attic/storage space. There is a saying “If you have to scroll, you have lost control.” Take time every few days ( if not every day) to move items to appropriate folders or the trash.

6.

Be realistic about your to-do list. Allow for spontaneous time with family and friends, unexpected surprises (good or bad), and breathing room.

7.

Know that being organized is not necessarily reflective of how a space looks but how it functions. Your space does not have to look like Architectural Digest or Martha Stewart’s craft room to be considered organized. We all have our own ideas of what it means to be organized. It doesn’t matter if your friend or neighbor considers the organized space to be not to their liking, there are multiple ideas/methods/ systems for organizing, and you want to create a system that works for you and your family.

8 . Try not to be overwhelmed by all the organizing material and advice.

If you struggle with disorganization, realize that this is not an easy process for everyone and be proud of every organizing goal (big and small) that you achieve. Surround yourself with positive influences and make it as fun as you can. You can play music (unless you find it too distracting), and taking breaks is allowed. Trusted friends are encouraged to help you succeed.

9. You will not FIND time to be organized, you have to MAKE the time. It might be just a few minutes a day or a few times a week, depending on your schedule and lifestyle, but if you establish a routine for organizing, you are more likely to stick with it. Remember that while much of life is out of our control, we do have control over the objects in our home. I often remind clients that who they are and what they have are linked and that home is the physical and emotional base of their family, which helps them to make staying organized a priority.

10 . Take the extra time before you move to purge, as it doesn’t make sense (in time or money) to move unwanted items. After moving, take the time while unpacking to plan ahead in setting up areas to function for you and your lifestyle. WHAT DO I DO NOW, ROMONA? Romona Scholder, M.A., RNCS Psychotherapist

Q

Should I let my son play football? I have been hearing how concussions can cause a lot of damage later in life. I can’t see how it can be worth it to risk my son’s health, or for that matter, letting my daughter play soccer when she gets older.

Signed concerned parent.

A

In the past, we accepted a lot more injury in life and sports than we do now. If a child was injured during recess or on the swing set at school, it simply came with the territory. If he or she fell off a horse or while riding a bike, we accepted the fact that these things happen. Today we all wear helmets

when participating in these sports. We now know better, so we should do better. When my brother and I rode horses bareback, holding on to their manes, galloping back to the barn as fast as they could go, my mother stood silently by praying that we wouldn’t fall off. She wanted us to be brave and full of adventure and not be afraid. It’s that choice that’s difficult to make when you don’t want your child in danger. The information we have about children’s brains is alarming, as they appear to be much more susceptible to long-term effects of injury than adults. You are weighing the risks against the positive results of playing these games, as children learn many things while playing sports. You might consider other sports that are less dangerous: basketball, baseball, tennis, swimming, golf and track. I’ve been told that soccer for young people is relatively safe as th,ey don’t do head butts or sliders. As I said earlier, we now know better, so we should do better. We survived our childhoods, sometimes by the skin of our teeth, but we can find other

ways to teach our children these important lessons.

Q

My sister’s husband lost 30 pounds. He looks great. My sister says not only does he look different but his personality seems different. Is that possible with weight loss?

Signed curious sister.

A

Yes, it’s fairly certain that someone’s personality can change with weight loss. When we move the pieces on a chessboard, the game changes. But how it changes is less certain. One woman became excessively controlling, another man became flirtatious and quite extroverted. A large amount of weight loss changes how the world sees us, and we can become more vulnerable. I remember meeting a woman who was in public relations who had just lost 100 pounds. Her biggest problem was that no one recognized her, and it adversely affected her business. She threatened to begin wearing a name tag. You didn’t say how your friend’s husband changed, so I can’t comment directly on her situation. I believe that we gain weight for psychological as well as physical reasons. It’s more than just “calories in/calories out.” We put on weight because we use food for comfort or we hide from the world behind our layer of fat. When we lose weight, we still have the underlying psychological problem. I know I must sound repetitive but therapy is a good idea. If you

can confront the underlying issues for the initial weight gain, you might be able to keep from gaining it back.

Q

Do the seasons of the year make any difference in our moods? It seems like everyone was really cranky this last January.

Signed interested.

A

There’s a condition called seasonal affective disorder that can cause depression in some people who have insufficient exposure to the sun. The treatment for that is more sun exposure or the use of special lights to augment the sunrays. But, yesterday morning it was foggy and gray here at my home. My neighbor across the street e-mailed me that she never felt happier than when it was gray and overcast and the sun didn’t shine. There’s a healthy dose of attitude in how the weather affects our mood. I’ve always felt that having the weather determine our mood puts something else in charge of how we felt. How much better it is to adapt to whatever Mother Nature sends our way and not take it as a personal affront. This last January was extremely cold and snowy in some parts of the country. Perhaps the crankiness had more to do with the effects of the weather, like cars not starting or snow drifts, than in actual mood changes. I actually know people who prefer that kind of weather to the heat of summer.

Avery’s Avid-Reader Corner Review by Avery Katz, age 16

Author: Charlotte BrontĂŤ Publisher: Penguin Price: $2.99 (Amazon.com) Ages: 13+ Summary: The story begins in early England, at a home by the name of Gateshead Hall. Jane Eyre, the main character,

resides here for the majority of her childhood. However, Jane was adopted at a young age and due to poor relations with the relatives who took her in, her exit is prompted. At this point, she leaves for the Lowood School. It is here in the book that social issues such as class gaps and feminism truly start to show their face, only to be amplified when Jane moves on to her new position as a governess at Thornfield Hall, following her graduation and short teaching career at Lowood. Here, supernatural occurrences and an odd, strenuous relationship with the Hall’s master, Mr. Rochester, not only leave the reader to question the morality and intelligence of those involved in the story, but will leave the reader on the edge of their seat, trying to see if Jane will make it out unscathed.

What I Liked About the Book: What was truly incredible about this book was not just the amazing plot, char-

acter development, and constant suspense, but the way that it thoughtfully examined the social issues that plagued England throughout the 1800’s. Charlotte BrontÍ’s firsthand experience with these issues, such as the equality of class and gender, allowed her to accurately depict them as well as their after effects within the book. These issues alone will give the reader a lot more to think about than just the plot, once finished with the novel, thus giving it a truly incredible feel.

Should we stay or should we go? What would you do?

hat would you do if you and your spouse believe that you can’t afford a summer family vacation, but your two teenaged kids come to you and say all their friends are going on a vacation, and they have pooled their savings (some of which was earmarked for college), which is enough for a nice family trip in the mountains for two nights? Do you say NO and explain to them that you can’t afford it, and encourage them to continue to save their money? Or...do you take them up on it and arrange a nice family vacation? The following are two viewpoints that you can review to help bring up a discussion within your family.

Go on the vacation

• Family is important, and getting away to make new family memories is very important. • It is important for children to learn to contribute to the family in other ways. • It demonstrates that the kids are willing to make a Boulder

sacrifice and helps teach the kids about paying for their own way and how much a vacation really costs. • The kids will really appreciate the family time more since they paid for it. • Once you are there, take a hike, swim at the hotel pool to try not to spend more. Use coupons and other discounts to help keep expenses down. PLUS…They still will have some time to save for college. • It is not often that teenagers actually want to spend time with their parents and siblings. It’s better to take advantage of this moment. This situation could have been that the teenagers wanted to go off on their own with friends. • If things go awry later on, and you really don’t have money for the rent or house payment, it will be another lesson learned as well.

Don’t go on the vacation

• You can have a great time at home around the Boulder/ Denver area—make memories at the park, at the zoo, a museum, take multiple day trips to the mountains, play 3000 Center green drive

board games and watch a movie at home on pay-perview. • You can’t spend the kids’ money. In addition, some of this is saved for college and it is not sending the kids the right message. Dipping into long-term savings for immediate gratification is wrong. • All of our friends are going on a vacation, and we want to go, too. Spending money that you don’t have simply because their friends are all going on vacation is not the right message, either. • It is better to teach kids that we can’t afford it and it is important to live within our means. • The lesson pa r ents taught them about saving has already been learned. The fact that the kids wanted to chip in is amazing. Now you teach them the next lesson that sometimes you have to say NO. We all want to do MORE than we can afford, and that is why many people are in debt. • It is very shortsighted for parents to even consider spending their kids’ college money, which will help them in the future to land a better job and possibly earn more money. • Kids should not manipulate their parents and are not old enough to make these types of decisions; it is not a money smart decision.

all had a great time and now we all have to buckle down and tighten our belts. It was not the right thing to spend the kids’ money, but in doing so, we became closer and will remember this time for many years to come.” However, we should not teach kids that it is okay to blow your college savings on a two-day trip to go out and have fun. There are thousands of things to do in our city and in the nearby mountains. Making memories ARE very important, but do not have to cost a lot. Many times, just spending the time together and doing things as a family, then coming home and fixing a great meal together and playing a board game till bedtime can build more long-lasting memories that spending hundreds of dollars. Spending more money does not make it a “better memory.” Do not take money from your kids. Instead, give them positive reinforcement that they made a good decision to save and for offering to spend their money. And hopefully when the kids are in college, they will thank their parents for holding true to their principles. Understand that it can be more satisfying to have money in savings, knowing that you could spend it on something, than to actually spend it on that.

Izzy’s Garden by Isabella Martinez

ello. My name is Isabella Martinez. I am a student at Boulder High School and am currently in 9th grade. The weather is beginning to become warm, and colors are splattered like paint all over the gardens. Smiles form on faces, and the glow of the sun drips like water on the earth. The life that awakens in warm weather wanders as the tall green grasses flourish. It is summertime, and happiness roams about. Happiness is a very important emotion that leads us to feel both enlightened and fills us with joy. In this article I will share with you many activities and different ways to feel happy this summer and throughout the year.

Bethy, Isabella and Brigitte

Recently I met with Brigitte Mars, (a local herbalist), and Bethy Lovelight (a local poet), and we talked about the importance and benefits of being happy. As I talked to them, they seemed like beautiful fairies, full of wisdom and light. The first thing I will share with you are different activities you can do to promote a happy lifestyle. One great activity

is dancing. Dancing is a form of exercise and is great for the body. Dancing always is a beneficial thing to do, but during the summer, it seems to feel more free and fun. As Bethy told me, “It is a good idea to take off your shoes and feel the earth below you as you dance. You feel the pulse of the earth against your feet and feel connected.” The music that we choose to dance to can also greatly affect our moods. It is important to pick lighthearted and positive music. Another idea is to have relaxed meetings with your friends and do something out of the ordinary. Brigitte recommends having a book trade or even a clothes swap. This is a cheap and simple way to have fun. It is also a good idea to do things that you wouldn’t usually do because of time constraints. Some good ideas to try are writing poetry, playing a new instrument, cooking new food, or even singing. These are all good activities to try to make you happy, but another option is making food. The feeling we get after making and eating homemade foods is one of accomplishment and of happiness. There are many tasty food ideas that can be a delicious and fun snack in summer. “During this time of year, it

is nice to enjoy colorful fruits and veggies,” states Brigitte Mars. Often during summer most fruits and vegetables being sold are local and in my opinion, tastier. Lemon balm is also a wonderful plant that can be used in a water bottle to add a little lemon flavor. Bethy also told me, “During the summer it is important to eat foods from the ground, like salads. This can be a light meal during a summer day.” One other simple summer treat is homemade lemonade. To do this you can squeeze lemons, add ice, then blend with maple syrup or sugar. Bethy said, “Adding a pinch of sea salt to the mix will help replenish the body.” All these ideas on foods to eat or drink during the summer are other ways to stay heathy and happy.

Happiness is what carries us on throughout the day. In my experience, when I am feeling down, everything feels a little gray. In order to have happiness it helps to surround yourself with positive energy. Keeping the space around you positive and relaxed is a must. Sometimes simply being on your own gives you enough time to breathe and remember life is spacious not constricted. Happiness is what brings light to our lives, as well as to others. From this article, I hope that you have learned about the importance of happiness as well as what you can do to make you happy. Happiness is one of the most important emotions there is, and it is important to always treat your body so this emotion can be present. Always feel the earth under your feet, the radiant sunshine on your neck, and dance for what we have in our world! Publishers Note: Check our calendar for dance events. Also, you can check out Avalon, Solstice on Pearl and Street Side Studios and the Dairy Center for the Arts for upcoming events.

Classic Summer Fun by Becca Levin

t’s more than simply breaking out swimsuits and heading for the nearest pool. It’s more than chalk scratching against grated pavement, frying eggs on the sidewalk to take in just how hot it is, and putting on sunscreen. It’s summer, and it’s here, whether we’re ready for it or not (after our winter, we are). When you’ve got small kids, big kids, or are just looking for some great family things to do with everyone, finding the right thing is not always the easi-

est of tasks—especially when there’s a small budget to consider. Fear not, though. Just because the budget’s on a shoestring doesn’t mean the fun has to be, too. The advent of the Internet gives us a uni-

Evidence-based, multi-sensory instruction to help students learn to their potential. We go far beyond traditional tutoring using proven methods.

verse of ideas, trips, and tips for families looking to beat the heat and have some fun this summer. Take Pinterest, for example. The site gives its users a way to express their interests and ideas with the simple click of a button, whether it’s DIY makeup or designer dresses to drool over. When it comes to family fun, users post the small-budget big hits they’ve tried in their homes for others to test. Why not freeze plastic dinosaurs in a big block of ice and let the kids play paleontologist for the day? They can use a variety of utensils, like spoons, toothbrushes, and sandbox tools to dig up their creatures of the past. While they’re at it, they can learn about these ancient animals and stay cool on hotter days. There’s so much more. Use cookie cutters to make eating watermelon that much more unique. Poke holes in an empty water bottle and attach it to your hose for a DIY sprinkler. Spray-paint circles on the backyard grass to make a Twister mat the wind can’t blow away. Use glow-bracelets to keep a game of ring-toss going after dark. Go on a scavenger hunt for the letters of the alpha-

bet. The possibilities are (literally) endless. Better yet— come up with your own idea and upload its results online for others to see and try for themselves. Old-school items aren’t things of the past, though. Take that chalk, for instance. Using circular stencils, kids can create their own mandalas. Water guns become carnival fun with the help of stacked plastic cups. Sun-sensitive paper creates shadow art to last a lifetime. Magnifying glasses and terrariums are there for all the bug catching that’s bound to happen. There are always those water balloons, too. The options, again, are only limited to the imagination. And the safety of others, of course. Speaking of scavenger hunts—we mentioned the thrill of geocaching last issue, and it’s still a great option for family hikes beyond the backyard. But what about adventures way beyond the backyard? Summer vacations are practically a tradition for families everywhere. Road trips are one way to travel crosscountry and actually get to see our great United States. Historical sites sprinkle the landscape and are great ways to connect to our roots. Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, for instance, is a wonderful interactive blast from the past that offers more than facts on placards and old buildings to stare at. It’s

Night At The Museum, during the day, and you can participate in all the ruckus—in costume! But what about gas? Hotels? Or in my case, smelly siblings? Speaking as a broke just-out-of-college kid, big trips have always seemed just out of reach. Or so I thought. T h a t ’s w h e r e B u d g e t Travel comes in. The site calls itself “the ultimate resource for the world’s savviest travelers.” They list more than dream destinations at BT—they actually make them attainable for those of us looking to spend a little less. Their “Family” trip ideas tab reels in articles, tips, tricks, and more for those looking to create a fun and unique vacation for the summer break. Colorado’s own Estes Park is listed as one of the top-ten small-town travel destinations for 2014.

BOULDER County Kids

So whatever your dreams are for this summer – you and your kids are in for a treat, figuratively, literally, or both! Adventure can be found in your backyard and beyond, smelly siblings and all.
