That is why I liked making this piece; while looking at myself in the mirror, I had to focus on parts of my face while drawing with a continuous line and not looking at my work. It is an imperfect self-portrait.”

Taking the Family to India by Jennifer Martin

I

ndia is a fascinating country full of color, spices, temples and mosques, with lots of people everywhere. The flight getting there is a long one and best to do a stopover like Paris to ease the jet lag. India is twelve-and-a-half hours later than Mountain Standard Time; yes that half-hour is in there since India wanted to have the same time through out the whole country. Since it is such a long way, I would suggest going for three weeks or more. There is a lot to see in India and you will only be able to see a small portion of the country. I would say that the trip is best for children ages 8 and older if you are touring cities and areas. Changing stations for babies are nonexistent and bathrooms can be quite the experience. Toddlers might be a lot to hold onto with the masses of people, traffic and lack of sidewalks. If you are going to an ashram or staying in one location you might be fine with younger children. We strongly recommend using a guide for your trip if

Our guide Fifu in front of his hotel. The people of India are quite friendly and love to meet travelers. you are touring around cities and areas. You can also book your trip through a travel agency or group tour. Although much English is spoken in the larger cities, there can be a lot of negotiations for car or bus travel or booking trains or flights to see the various sites. Delhi has a subway system but avoid rush hour and utilize the woman’s car which is up front. That can save you a lot of time getting around the city as can take many hours to get out of Delhi by car. Food and safety are issues throughout the country and I was advised by well-trav-

eled friends to eat a vegetarian diet. To my surprise I didn’t miss meat at all. I did enjoy fresh fish on the Indian Ocean coast. The food is wonderful. Avoid street foods and take antibiotics with you in case you do get sick. I was also advised to take Plum Balls with me. They are little balls the size of pepper corns made from Japanese plums and yams. They keep your system alkaline and will help you stay healthy. You can order them online or buy them at Natural Grocers in Boulder or Longmont. Propolis spray is also good to take in case you get any respiratory issues. Smog is a big problem in India and can make you sick. Imodium, Pepto-Bismol tablets and hand sanitizer are good to take with you too. Depending on where in India you plan on visiting, check with your doctor for any vaccines or prescriptions to fill first. Driving in India is quite the experience and we strongly recommend that you don’t try it on your own. They drive fast, on the other side

of the of the road, through a dense traffic of cars, trucks, motorcycles (with as many as four people on one motorcycle), tuk-tuks, pedestrians and lots and lots of cows. Transportation, lodging and food are all very inexpensive but advance planning is advised. Trains can fill up on first class accommodations. Bring your own toilet paper and soap as they may lack such items on the train. There are overnight trains and they do provide bedding. It is not recommended to eat the food on the train so bring your own snacks, food and water with you. Air travel is available all over the country but allow a lot of time between domestic and international terminals. It took us three hours in Delhi to get from the domestic gate to the international gate and the shuttle system is very confusing. I would recommend hiring a van to meet you and take you directly. Our guide Fifu, met us in Delhi with drivers and escorted us to our bed and breakfast in New Delhi. He arranged security when needed in the larger cities as well as driv-

The Taj Mahal is an amazing place to visit with a fascinating history. ers for day trips to places like Agra to see the Taj Mahal and various palaces and temples. Fifu is also the owner of Hotel Fifu in Jaiselmer. His hotel was a great place to stay with views of the old forted city and he can arrange camel rides in the desert. He was very helpful in explaining the religious and caste systems of the country. Fifu is a Jain Hindu and they are strict vegans. Not even root vegetables so they don’t kill the plant or kill any of the microorganisms that thrive in the soil. One of those organisms might be your great grandmother so they have great respect for all life. Another good reason for using a guide is to help you buy things. The textiles, jewelry and spices markets are quite exciting and they can help you buy quality and for the right price. The holy cities are quite interesting to visit. Various temples will expose you to many religious practices. Bring an extra pair of socks as they request you take your shoes off. Many shops will

Locals love to practice their English.

ask you to take your shoes off as well, so be prepared. The Brahman temples will try and get as much money from you as possible so remember to negotiate with the holy men and reserve some money in a pocket for your donation before you are asked. Small bills are what you need to work with in the temples, markets, and smaller restaurants. Meals will cost $3 to $4 and some higher end places will take credit cards. Transportation is very inexpensive and tuk-tucs will only cost a few dollars to take you places. You can ask them to work with you for several hours or the day but always negotiate your price in advance. There are ATMs in most areas but the banks may charge you up to 10% which gets expensive. When we were there they had a paper money crisis and large bills were devalued so the ATMs had lines of sometime 100 people to get small bills. The people of India are quite friendly and they will want to have their picture taken with you. They love practicing their English and taking selfies with you and you will be asked a lot. Beggars are rather aggressive at times. Having security with you can help ward off the swarms you might encounter. Best to give your

donations directly to the temples (not to the holy men), Some temples feed up to 3,000 people a day. Beware of pick-pockets in crowded markets and be careful at the ATMs. Take at least two debit cards with you as some ATMs will eat your card and it is the weekend you may have to wait until Monday to get someone to retrieve it for you. You will need a visa which you can order in advance online at indianvisaonline. gov.in. Choose the e-tourist eTV application and you can pay by credit card or Paypal. It may take you several days so give yourself a month before you leave to get your paperwork in hand. Take good walking shoes, a light jacket for cool evenings in the desert, long pants and shorts. Laundry is always

available for a few dollars. October through March is the best time to visit India. The majority of India is tropical and is affected by three main seasons; summer, winter and monsoon. Our last stop was a resort in Goa on the Indian Ocean which was a nice rest. Check your cell phone provider for international plans. Sim cards are inexpensive for a local phone number, but it is nice to be able to text your driver and check in back home when needed. India is a wonderful country and we hope you may be able to visit one day. Feel free to email me at info@ bouldercountykids.com for more information. If you want to contact our guide Fifu for help making arrangements or advice, go to hotelfifu.in to reach him. Happy travels!

Kids’ Planet... with Thorne Nature Experience Drawing by Kara Priest

ART, MUSIC, AND NATURE

Artwork by James Manning.

by Dr. Oakleigh Thorne, II

I

n my last article I wrote about how science is cool. Now I’d like to write about art and music. I will also touch on how these interrelate with nature. I strongly believe that it is extremely important for young kids to have a chance to study and practice both art and music, because this helps develop creativity and imagination in each child. Yet these are the classes that usually get cut if there is a school budget crunch! Kids should be given art materials such as color pencils, crayons, watercolor paints, clay, and blank paper. I stress blank paper because it gives children the freedom to draw any shape or size that comes into their heads. I dislike standard coloring

books because they immediately limit this freedom. It doesn’t matter if the proportions of what children draw or paint are distorted. In fact, I feel that is often the real charm of kids’ art. For example, in a former article on imagination, I included as the graphic a crayon picture of a hummingbird that was given to me by a little girl to whom I had just shown a real hummingbird with a bright red throat. She was able to hold the tiny bird

Page 8 • www.bouldercountykids.com

in her hand before it flew away. This had so impressed her that she drew a huge bright red hummingbird that dominated the whole picture. It was the way she imagined it. I still have that drawing on my office wall! The picture above was given to me by a little boy right after I showed him a real Red-winged Blackbird that we had caught at our Federal Bird Banding Station at the Thorne Nature Experience headquarters. He even noticed that the red in the wing had a yellow border and he clearly showed that in his drawing. I remember in the 1950s and 1960s when the Boulder Valley School District put on an annual show of children’s art at the University of Colorado Museum. I would always come out of that show smiling and happy because creativity and imagination were everywhere! As far as music is concerned, the more variety to

which children are exposed the better. For very young kids, various percussion instruments are always fun. They love to beat upon them, which develops their sense of rhythm. It’s great if they can experiment with a keyboard, piano, recorder, or small xylophone…anything that produces musical tones. It is also good for children to learn to sing. If you can sing a musical tone to a child and they can reproduce the same note, even if an octave higher, then that shows they already have some musical ability. Nature is full of music and art. I used to teach a course in nature photography at New Vista High School in Boulder. It was surprising to me, even in winter, the amazing variety of images my students were able to capture with their cameras. We would put on a show for the whole school every quarter. I taught them to “move in close” and discover some of the smallest

items, like a tiny flower or a bug. In the spring is a very good time to hear nature’s music. It is a time when the birds are singing the most. Chorus frogs are sounding off and maybe even a coyote is howling. Our Thorne office is at Sombrero Marsh, and I will often tell a group of school children to stand quietly, close their eyes, and notice what they can hear. With your eyes closed, your sense of hearing becomes much sharper. I hope that art, music, and nature become important to you in your life. I feel very lucky to have enjoyed all of these.

PRINCESS CULTURE MEETS GIRL POWER by Taylor Cannon

O

ne of my parents’ favorite anecdotes is the story of their attempted resistance to the “Princess complex” for their daughters; they tried to keep us from vapid aspirations by choosing not to purchase us any Barbie dolls or Disney princess movies. Pure though their intentions may have been, their failure was, of course, inevitable. Not only were these products gifted to us by friends and relatives, but we were privy to heavily gendered messaging nearly everywhere we looked. On television, in movies, in advertisements—those depictions of men as being unemotional, thoughtless, violent animals in contrast to sensitive, passive and weak women were ubiquitous. These days, things haven’t improved much, and most of us are pretty clued in to the highly controversial nature of gender issues as they pertain to parenting. Battle lines can be drawn over the choice of a Barbie doll for a birthday present, and the internet has become riddled with think pieces dedicated to the dissection of the decision to allow your child to have a Cinderella-themed birthday party. Parents are encouraged to loosen their grip on gender-policing every choice their child makes, theoretically leaving kids free to determine their own identity.

But the unfortunate reality is that we live in a gender-binary world, where traditionally masculine characteristics are valued more highly than their feminine counterparts. The challenge is in raising children who are able to resist society’s expectation of acceptable behaviors and lifestyles for men and for women and become well-rounded, open-minded individuals. This is particularly important because many characteristics that are traditionally associated with a certain gender are necessary to hone in pursuit of becoming a balanced adult. Specifically, as I’ve written here before, the ability to successfully weigh rational thought with emotional sensitivity in the decisionmaking process is invaluable to personal development. Men are usually assumed to be more mathematical, less emotional and thereby, in the minds of many, more pragmatic. Women are more often accused of being over-

Page 14 • www.bouldercountykids.com

ly emotional and lacking in pragmatism. While we tend to do a fairly decent job of teaching girls to express their emotions, boys are too often deprived of such an education. Yet another issue of adherence to this societal gender binary is the resultant “Princess complex.” Should we really be discouraging our kids from liking pink and being girly? It seems likely to me that the issue at the heart of this matter is how we, as a culture, define success. If we want our children to be successful, and we really stop to consider what that truly means, we’ll probably determine that happiness is the ultimate goal. And perhaps rather naively, we often associate happiness with power and money, which we believe are achieved through ambition, hard work and determination. But the mistake here is that happiness is actually found in our relationships with one another, and in our ability to

find work that fulfills us. In finding happiness and moving towards a more peaceful, receptive, civil society, it’s essential to equip the next generation with knowledge of how to cultivate loving, nourishing relationships with others and find joy in everyday life. If we want to encourage our children to gain the skills to build a life they can love, we need to teach them to recognize, process and express emotions and procure self esteem through acts of kindness and understanding. These, incidentally, are skills that we are more likely to stress with girls than with boys. Traits that are perceived as being traditionally feminine are too ubiquitously devalued, and when we strive for gender equality, it’s easy to unconsciously encourage both boys and girls to push sensitivity and kindness aside in pursuit of their goals. Meanwhile, differing expectations for behavior in boys and girls are evidenced in the fact that boys are still more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD, leading to a generation of under treated women and over-medicated men. Boys are also far more likely to be convicted of a crime before the age of 18 and sent to a juvenile detention facility. The jury is still out on how much of these trends are attributed to socialization and what is dictated by biol-

ogy, but it’s true regardless that we tend to treat girls and boys differently in accordance with these outdated stereotypes. And both genders suffer from these oversights—boys’ emotions are more likely to be ignored, belittled or pushed aside, and encouraged to be altogether unexpressive. Girls, meanwhile, are expected to be sweet, likable and largely dependent upon emotions for decision-making ability. If we strive to help all kids to cope with their emotions in healthy ways they’ll be more thoroughly prepared to be successful adults. But how can we hope to change those heavily gendered messages that inundate our kids from all directions in this day and age? Well, at least in terms of the industry of children’s toys and media, parents have significant agency. Our dollar is our vote, and

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH EDUCATIONAL we can push the toy market to offer products that encourage kids to be more empathetic and self-reflective and provide positive messages of female empowerment. And changes are already starting to be noticeableDisney recently launched its “Dream Big, Princess” campaign, which focuses on the strength, determination and courage of its princesses. And an increasing number of children’s movies are being produced that focus on female protagonists who are ambitious, enterprising, bold and thoughtful. Moana, Brave and Frozen were all blockbuster hits that offered positive and powerful images of femininity, and the latest live-action version of Beauty and the Beast is yet another example of the strides taken in the children’s movie genre. In the realm of playthings, too, progression is visible.

Thames and Kosmos, a company that produces science kits for kids, teamed up with Mattel in 2016 to produce 2 Barbie STEM Science kits with scientist Barbie dolls. Individually, Mattel has introduced a new Barbie Fashionista Assortment of dolls of all shapes, sizes and colors. And after receiving plenty of push back for their rollout of a thinner, curvier, made-over version of their Merida doll from Brave, Disney promptly took the doll off the market. Power is in the hands of the buyer, and change is possible if we are discerning in our purchases.

THE ART OF ASSERTIVENESS

by Tatum Oman Uhrick, LPC RPT

hen assertiveness is not a person’s natural way, there can be a process in learning how to be assertive. Be kind to yourself and with your child and keep trying. It is worth the end result! Keep in mind, you cannot be assertive for another person; however, you can be a model for them. As you know, your children are always watching! My hope is also to give you some guidance in teaching them the art of assertiveness. Practice, model and teach.

What does it mean to be assertive?

Assertiveness is the ability to express yourself in words and actions that are congruent with how you feel without imposing. • clear communication without abruptness, however firm in words • good eye contact • speak with confidence • be your own advocate Assertive words are thought out. If needed, take a few breathes prior to reengaging in the conversation so to say with conviction and not too far as aggressive.

Why do we seek assertiveness?

It is a breathe of fresh air to stand up for yourself in a way that does not impose on others. Saying things that you want to communicate while feeling clear-headed and grounded without anger. You will fidget less and feel more empowered if you are not angry. Assertiveness also encourages healthy relationships. You will have less resentment because you will say no when you feel it is necessary. You will be showing your child how to stand up to bullies and advocate for themselves. You are saying that what you think matters. Your child will learn that they matter to.

How do we be more assertive?

When becoming more assertive, people that have a tendency towards passiveness then have a tendency to be a little more aggressive than they intended. That’s okay.

Page 16 • www.bouldercountykids.com

I’d rather have a healthy salad!

The beautiful thing about communicating is that you can say something like “That came out more harshly than I intended. What I meant to say was...” Make “I” statements keeping the focus on yourself. If you have a passive tendency, you may feel bad for asking what you want/need. That possible awkwardness and reluctance will eventually pass as you find it feels good to stand up for yourself. Say “no” when you truly do not want to do something even it you feel like you “should.” Remember if you have a hard time doing it for yourself, then model for your child. Make eye contact when you speak to people. Try practicing with some smaller things. Example. Your partner asks where you want to go for dinner and instead of saying “anywhere,” name a few places. Or, name the part of town that you would like to be in. Say what you would prefer allowing choices as well if the situation calls for it. Example. You have plans to hike with a friend. The friend suggests a hike you are not comfortable doing. State the issue then make a suggestion. “That is a bit longer than I was hoping for.” “I was thinking closer to a hike like...” Example. Let’s say you are in a car and you are too warm. Instead of sitting uncomforably and possibly

waiting for another person to change your environment, ask if the a/c may be turned up. When you are uncomfortable, change your environment seeing your needs equal to others. It is okay to speak up for yourself when you are uncomfortable. Everytime you assert yourself your child will be learning good habits. When you make a decision and feel grounded and clearheaded, you have made the right decision. When something about a moment or day feels off, that is a time to be assertive. It is never too late to speak up. Not everyone around you will like your change and may try to keep you in your old role. Stick to it and hopefully they will come around. And if they don’t, it is okay too. You are a great parent. but you do not have to do it all. Taking on undo stress will take effect on you and your family. Practice assertiveness even when your children are not around to make it a way of life. Being assertive is the best way to teach assertiveness to your children.

WHAT DO I DO NOW, ROMONA? Romona Scholder, M.A., RNCS Psychotherapist

Q

I am wondering about an appropriate age to talk to my children about death. My sister’s family skirts the issue with their kids and even hid the fact when their pet hamster died. I want to bring my children up without fear about death but I don’t want to traumatize them either. Signed mother of three

A

When I was a child, the idea of death was a natural part of life. My pets died, the animals on our farm died and my grandparents died as well. I said a prayer every night, “If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.” It sounds morbid now, but I don’t remember being traumatized. I’m sorry your friends missed the golden opportunity to bury their hamster in the backyard in a shoebox with appropriate ceremony. It’s a great way to introduce children to death. I’ve noticed that if parents are uneasy around death they will often pass that on to their children. A child’s understanding of death will reflect their age and mental development, for example, a four-year-old may say that Grandpa is dead and still expect him to show up for supper. My sister-in-law’s granddaughter knew she no longer had to hide her

shoes from the cat because “Molly’s dead” but then looked for her under the bed. I sang in the children’s choir in our church and we were expected to sing the Requiem Mass for all the funerals. There was no attempt to shield us from the reality of death. We had our own problems around death though. We were of a stoic culture; country people who considered crying or any display of emotion showed a sign of weakness. It took a while for me to get past that belief. I’m always shocked when I meet an adult who’s never been to a funeral, much less attended a “wake”. It’s a parent’s responsibly to teach their children about all aspects of life, about money, about sex and about death. They are all loaded subjects that call upon us to examine our own feelings about these issues. It was easier when everyone lived closer to grandparents and aunts and uncles and went to church every Sunday with neighbors and had backyards in which to bury hamsters. If you don’t have an answer to the question, “Where did Grandpa go when he died?”, it will be hard to explain it to your child.

Q

Is using profanity a stress reliever? I have a friend who loves to use cuss words and her excuse is that it keeps her sane and makes her more calm. Her whole family cusses a lot but they also seem to laugh a lot. Any thoughts on this? Signed verbally concerned.

sion about expressing her emotions, both positive and negative, in that way. There is something to be said for not repressing one’s emotions and how we do it is a personal choice. Using vulgar language, drinking alcohol, going to a casino to gamble, driving too fast, eating too much, using drugs; are all used as stress reducers by some folks. But that does not keep these activities from causing harm to themselves and their friends and families. Part of being a mentally healthy adult is finding safe ways of combating stress. Going for a walk, going to the gym, reading a good book, baking a cake, going dancing, being on social media, all of these things can reduce stress in a fun and productive way. No one is free from stress but how we choose to manage it says a lot about our ability to manage our lives.

Q

Our son who is grown up now lives up in Aspen. He has lung issues and Aspen is very high altitude. His health would be much better at a lower altitude. I can’t seem to get him to move and I am worried about him. I can’t understand why he is so resistant to doing something

that would be so much better for his health. Sign concerned parents.

A

Your last sentence is the real issue, isn’t it? “Why does he choose to do something that is not good for his health?” I think it may be part of the definition of what it means to be human. We can choose to do something that is not good for us. I think it started when we left the Garden of Eden. We call it original sin. We started early and we’ve kept it up. We do it in our individual lives and we do it as a society. I’m sure your son has his reasons. Perhaps living in Aspen fulfills a lifelong dream and he feels he can push his way through this. He’s young after all and feeling omnipotent and indestructible is a luxury of youth. How many people with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) live in Denver when it’s been shown that living at high altitude shortens the life span of the person? I suspect your son is aware of his options and that your pointing them out may have an adverse effect on his decision making, which is yet another foolish luxury of youth.

s early as grade school, students are taught that Albert Einstein’s most significant contribution was his theory of relativity and his mass– energy equivalence formula E = mc2 (which has been d u b b e d “ t h e w o r l d ’s most famous equation”). Regrettably his historic formula has little relevance

outside the classroom in most peoples’ day-to-day life. However, Albert Einstein also was quoted “Compound interest is the most powerful force in the universe.” Compounding interest simply means that interest earned,

also earns interest at an exponential rate. Knowing this can have a major impact on everyone’s life, if they use it to their advantage. In other words, we must learn to live within our means so that we can save money regularly. This is the theory of reality according to Steve Carr. The key is to start saving early and allow compounding interest to work its magic for you over a longer period of time. The Rule of 72 is a much more useful formula that everyone can use everyday. This formula calculates how long it takes for an investment to double in amount. Divide the average interest rate into 72 and the answer is the number of years it takes for your investment to double. It’s that simple. If, for example, a person at age 22 invests $167/ month (=$2,000/year) for the next 9 years, that would aggregate to an $18,000 principle investment. If the average rate is 9%*, it would double every 8 years. This investment can easily grow to over a million dollars in one’s lifetime. Thus, everyone has the potential to be a millionaire, if they start

saving early on. Remember, it is NOT how much you MAKE that counts, it’s how you manage your money that can make a difference. Please consider the following example: At age 22, invest $167/ month for the next 9 years =$18,000 aggregate investment at 9% APR.

Age 30 = $26,000 Age 38 = $52,000 Age 46 = $104,000 Age 54 = $208,000 Age 62 = $416,000 Age 70 = $832,000 Age 78 = $1,664,000 Age 86 = $3,328,000 *NOTE: An average interest rate of 9% is realistic for a Roth IRA account based upon historical data.

From January 1970 through to December 2014, the average annual compounded rate of return for the S&P 500®, including reinvestment of dividends, was approximately 1 0 . 7 % ( s o u r c e : w w w. standardandpoors.com). Since 1970, the highest 12-month return was 61%

(June 1982 through June 1983). Ok, you want to play “Devil’s Advocate”, you say that it’s not realistic for a 22 year old to invest $167/mo. Then consider this: tens of thousands of young adults commit to paying $200+ for an auto loan at 9% or more for 5 to 6 years and don’t blink an eye in signing the loan agreement. If you realistically take immediate gratification out of the equation, anything becomes realistic. Instead, they could purchase a less-expensive car that they could pay for with cash and have NO monthly payment and invest that money each month. To reach your financial goals, one MUST substitute their constant immediate gratification urges with savings and put the power of compounding interest to work for their future.

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH “The world owes you nothing, go out and earn it.” ~ Mark Twain, writer

While no one can predict future interest rates, one can learn that Albert Einstein was in fact a genius in many ways and ahead of his time. He also stated that “He who understands compounding interest can earn it, and he who does not understand it pays it.” I n s u m m a r y. S a v i n g to become a millionaire seems like a daunting task with an end goal far off in the future. We all wish we could flick a switch, work on retirement for a little bit, and be done. That simply isn’t the case. You have to be incredibly disciplined with your saving on a monthly basis for month after month,

year after year. Think how much more you would have in the example above, if you saved more than $2,000 a year and continued to save longer than 9 years. You have to be money smart and remain disciplined in savings. As difficult as saving for retirement can be, there is one part of retirement saving that is on your side: compound interest. Let it work hard for you. The biggest mistake is not starting to save now.

“It is not what you do for your children, but what you have taught them to do for themselves that will make them successful human beings.”

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH The Importance of face-to-face interactions Providing our children and ourselves healthy, attuned relationships

by Jessica Dancingheart

c c o r d i n g t o D r. Bruce Perry of the Child Trauma Academy, as a society we live in “relational poverty.” We spend less and less time in the company of others having meaningful in person connections. We spend increasing amounts of time behind our screens and steering wheels. The number of people per household is decreasing. There is a rise in the number

of people who work in social isolation—remotely at home or on the road. Children are placed in front of a screen at young ages and at school, social time is replaced with computer

Page 20 • www.bouldercountykids.com

time. Their interactions with adults is dropping. Whereas each young child had four adults interacting with him or her in generations past when we lived in multigenerational households, today we are happy when at day care an adult is tending to six children. No surprise that today, a 17-year-old, cumulatively over the course of his or her lifetime, has as much face-to-face interaction as a three-year-old did thirty years ago. For our children, t h i s d e f i c i t a ff e c t s t h e development of their brains and their capacity to socialize and self-soothe. For children and adults alike, we are seeing more susceptibility to mental and physical illness, along with a drop in our capacity to handle stress. Clearly, there is a need for us to rethink our lives and priorities and to place a greater emphasis on increasing our face-toface social interactions. As humans, we need healthy touch, eye contact with others, and emotionally attuned interactions in each other’s presence—not through social media. In order to offer our children

quality face-to-face time, we need to take care of our social needs as well. There are societal trends that are beyond our immediate control to reverse. There are lifestyle choices that we can make. I offer that you consider how you can shift your priorities by asking yourself when you and your child are behind a screen or rushing from activity to activity in the car, “Whether in the scheme of things, is what I am doing now an investment in the quality of my important relationship with my kids and other people in my life?” or “Am I serving me and my children’s social, emotional, mental and physical health?” Then, ask yourself “What small change can I make to reclaim face-to-face time with my family, friends and community?” “How can I set aside time to play games with my kids so that our social interaction time has a positive association—rather than it being chore or homework or activity or screen-time driven?” “How can I set aside time to do nothing other than sit with my child while sharing stories and cuddling?” or “How can I set aside family and friend time connecting with nature?” In making these shifts, get the support of friends, family and colleagues. Intentionally,

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH build yourself a community of people committed to increasing healthy attuned relationships. Mention what you have learned. Ask them if they want to join you in making small lifestyle changes to help increase your own and your children’s healthy social interactions. Be curious about what healthy social interactions mean. Reflect on fond memories of togetherness during childhood. Think about rituals that you enjoyed. As Maya Angelou said: “At the end of the day people won’t remember what you said or did, they will remember how you made them feel.”

Getting off the hamster wheel of the busy and media laden and socially isolated

lives we have will take effort, and I trust the rewards will be handsome.

Our philosophy incorporates the best thoughts on education over the centuries, our methods whisper of the past while remaining the best preparation for the future; our students are not told what to think; they are taught how to think for themselves; our community thrives on family activities and shared values; our academic pursuits are worthy of thoughtful conversation and guided practice. IMAGINE A SCHOOL YOU’LL WANT TO COME TO EVERY DAY.

WATERSHED SCHOOL STILL ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR FALL At WATERSHED, students learn by going off campus, working with experts, and creating solutions to real-world problems. Instead of memorizing answers for standardized tests, they might learn economics by starting a small business or master algebra by solving an engineering problem. At Watershed, students learn with a purpose. Along the way, they’re part of a close-knit community that allows them to be who they are. It’s no wonder they love coming to school every day.
