BOULDER COUNTY KIDS Must-Have Phone Apps for Parents by Kimberly Blaker

P

arents have countless reasons to worry about their kids’ safety from the time they’re born right on through the teen years. Unfortunately, technology is a big culprit. Yet, it can also serve to help keep kids safe. Many phone apps provide parents ways to monitor their kids’ whereabouts both online and in the real world. Not to mention, there are plenty of other useful apps for families as well. But with 2.8 million apps on the market, where does a parent begin? The following is a selection of useful apps designed specifically for parents and families. Best of all, many of these apps are free.

Kids’ Planet... with Thorne Nature Experience Photo by

Kids Plan It!

by Dr. Oakleigh Thorne, II

W

ith the recent March for Our Lives, organized by students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida after the tragic shooting there, our familiar “Kids Planet” heading has turned into “Kids Plan It.” What these young people were able to plan and accomplish in such a short time was amazing. Their effort quickly spread from local to national and in a little over one month they “did the impossible.” Hundreds of thousands of people around the USA responded to their call and marched! I know that they are determined to get some meaningful gun control legislation

March at the State Capital in downtown Denver. passed, but I feel what they have unleashed is far more encompassing. These young people are now prepared to take bold action on many fronts that affect their lives and it seems that nothing can stop them. So many of our country’s youth now feel that “Kids Planet” also means that they must take action to save our planet because it is indeed THEIR planet! It’s their future that is at stake.

Page 8 • www.bouldercountykids.com

They understand the science behind climate change. They see environmental pollution and exploitation. They see exploding human population and its negative effects. They understand what sustainability is. But mostly, they see the importance of political action for the first time in their lives and they are ready to move forward…no more leaving it to the “grown-ups” to fix. They’re going to get it done themselves and this time they are not giving up until the job is done. I’ve always had great admiration and respect for the idealism of youth, but now for the first time in my almost 90 years of life I see that it has fully blossomed and it’s not going away. Their battle cry is “enough is enough!” It will not come easily… usually nothing good ever does. It takes a lot of hard work and discipline. It requires a clear understand-

ing of the problems and the goals that need to be reached in order to solve them. If the Congress and the Administration do little or nothing, they will be replaced by the groundswell that our youth have started. Of this I am sure. There certainly are clearthinking members of both the major political parties who will be identified and elected. In fact, in the past, it was with openly cooperative bi-partisan effort that some of our country’s most important environmental laws were passed, such as the National Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Air Act, and the Clean Water Act, just to mention a few. It took great statesmanship to work these out and get them passed through Congress. I was very pleased back then to see such wisdom and future-thinking coming from our legislators.

The young people of today are looking for this same kind of well-informed and courageous leadership. In fact, they are demanding it! I have been involved with environmental education for a major part of my life and have worked to support the environment through an understanding of ecological principles and how these actually interact in nature. I have taught and mentored young people about nature and the environment and have seen firsthand how well they have responded and how wise they have become. I see them seeking truth and working for fairness, kindness, and honesty. They are the leaders of the future. I strongly believe in them!

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS Dr. Thorne is founder and honorary president of Thorne Nature Experience (formerly Thorne Ecological Institute) in Boulder. They have helped “connect youth to nature” for 64 years! Summer Learning Fortunately, there are plenty of fun, quick and easy ways to continue to help your child to use the skills they learned in the classroom every day over the summer.

meeting them as often as possible. Consistency is key, and chances are good that once you build positive habits and a strong routine, your child will continue learning and growing her brain all summer long.

S

ummer is finally just around the corner! These warmer months are a magical time for kids, with their ample space for family time and new adventures. And while the last thing most children will want to think about come May is more school work, the risk of students falling behind once they get back in the classroom after a long summer off is real. It’s important (and actually pretty easy) to continue to reinforce the lessons your child has been learning in school throughout the long vacation in order to mitigate “learning loss.” When I leave town on even just a week-long vacation, I know it takes me another week or so to get back into the swing of things at workso you can imagine how taking a three-month break might impact kids’ abilities to optimize their time at school.

We all know the value of reading with our children on a regular basis, but over the summer in particular, it’s important to set a steady reading routine with your child. If you think she’s old enough, try reading a book with her and then discussing its themes and story arc together. Ask her questions that will provoke her to think critically about the book and its characters. This is valuable bonding time for the two of you as well as excellent fine-tuning of your child’s reading and analytical skills. You can also see how well she’s understanding what she’s reading, and expand her vocabulary along the way!

Page 10 • www.bouldercountykids.com

Arithmetic is one area in which kids seem to suffer the most when it comes to learning loss over the summer break. But this time provides an ideal opportunity for kids to learn the real-life applications of basic math. Bring a pen and paper while grocery shopping, and put your child to work estimating your total expenditure as you walk the aisles. At home afterwards, use your receipt to have your child calculate your change if you’d paid with certain amounts of cash. (As an aside, doing these tasks at home may be more beneficial than asking your child to calculate the change you should receive while standing at the cash register. She’ll be stressed and under pressure to get the answer right on her first try, and therefore is unlikely to be able to think clearly and come away from the experience feeling positively about her math abilities). The frequent practice will show your child how and why they’ll need to use math in the real world, and it will boost their confidence in their capacity to solve problems outside of school. Maintaining the knowledge and skills gained throughout the school year really is a completely attainable goal for all kids; it’s as simple as setting small daily goals and

Taylor Cannon is a freelance writer who recently completed her M.A. in Mass Communication Research at CU Boulder. There are plenty of great summer reading and math programs available at little or no cost that can take some of the burden off of the parent for motivating kids to get out their school supplies during the summer. Grandrabbit’s Toy Shoppe offers one with the incentive of $5 “Bunny Munny” dollars for the child to spend at one of the store’s locations upon completion of the reading list. Three different levels are available for kids at various stages of the process of learning to read, so there truly is a reading list for everyone. ental health is a pivotal part of your child’s overall health. The wellness of their mouth will tie directly to adult systemic conditions like diabetes, heart disease and autoimmune conditions. Protecting their mouth and keeping it healthy is imperative for their future health. It may be surprising to learn that the most common chronic childhood disease is tooth decay! According to the Colorado Public Health department, 40% of Colorado kindergartners have cavities. That makes tooth decay more prevalent than asthma! A Delta Dental survey

showed that 45% of parents have missed work due to their child’s dental problems. The cost of this disease, especially when left untreated, adds up in school missed, sick days for parents, and hospitalizations. In 2007, over 3000 children had to go under general anesthesia at the Colorado Children’s Hospital to treat dental caries. But the good news is that this is a preventable disease! While following national guidelines, based completely on research and evidence based literature, we can stop childhood dental caries from being the problem that it is. Prevention is a twopronged process: 1) good home care and 2) regular visits to your dentist. Home care begins as early as prenatal care. The hormones during pregnancy commonly cause inflammation in gums, which is why many pregnant women will

notice increased bleeding while brushing and flossing. Dentistry is completely safe for pregnant women and, because over a quarter of pregnant women have untreated caries, it is important to make sure you are cavity free before delivering your bundle of joy! Periodontitis, or the chronic inflammation of the gums and bones, has been linked to low birth weight, pre-eclampsia and premature delivery. All pregnant women should get their teeth cleaned and get an oral evaluation to ensure that there are no current dental problems. Once your child is born, before their teeth erupt, you can simply clean their tongue and gums with a soft washcloth and water. At this stage, not putting them to bed with a bottle is important to form the right habits early on. Also, parents are advised not to take spoons or pacifiers and stick them in their mouth to clean them before putting them into baby’s mouth. It may seem harmless enough, but dental caries is caused by bacteria and it is possible to transmit that bacteria into baby’s mouth making them more prone to decay. Baby should cease pacifier use by 6 months and bottle use by one year. Sippy cups are a great transition tool but make sure nothing but milk and water goes inside of them. And they should only drink milk at mealtimes, not grazing throughout the day. The constant source of milk sugar over time can also cause cavities. Come see the dentist at first tooth’s eruption or

one year, whichever happens first! After this first visit, children should be seen by their dentist every 6 months. Once your child has some teeth in their mouth, it becomes even more imperative that they should not be put to sleep with a bottle of milk. The transition can be challenging, but transitioning from diluted milk to just water is a way to make this process easier. At this stage, begin to brush your child’s teeth for two minutes, twice a day (morning and evening). A small smear of toothpaste is safe and effective. Flossing should begin when teeth start to touch (which will typically happen in older toddlers). Children should not brush their own teeth without supervision until about age 7 or 8. A good test is if your child can write their name on their own legibly, they may be ready to tackle oral care independently. Parents should still check on their effectiveness past this age and brushing together is a good way to increase effective home care. If your child is younger than this age, feel free to let them explore and brush on their own as long as you follow up with assisted brushing and flossing to make sure their mouth is properly cleaned. Letting your toddler grab the brush and brush for a few seconds will help with fine motor skills and get them comfortable with oral hygiene activities.

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH “I’m Boooored” There’s nothing to do! by Tatum Oman Uhrick LPC, RPT

S

ummer is almost here! It is an exciting time for camps, sleep overs, day trips, vacations and more. And then, the... “I’m boooored” creeps in. And kids are looking to their parents for entertainment. This can be challenging in many ways. In all fairness, they did go from five days a week to having a lot of free time. It can be hard to fill! You will notice most of the ideas are engaging activities with you while some could have alone time elements. I hope these ideas will help. Kids, if you are reading this, circle the ones you like and ask your parent to help

set them up for you. I hope you have fun!

EXPLORATORY

Sensory Station: Get a container that is anywhere from 6 to 18 inches deep and 3 feet long. This can be used for dry items like leaves, sticks, rocks, feathers (store bought) and/or cotton balls. Or, it can also be filled with water or sand. Or, you can use plastic play dishes. Put some whipped cream in one for a fun “etch and sketch.” Draw, whip away and draw again. Or, simply smear around for some sensory fun.

ARTS AND CRAFTS

Glitter Bottle: There are various ways to make a glitter bottle. I like using a smart water bottle because they are sturdy. You will need glitter, glitter glue and warm water. First you put in the glitter glue then the glitter color of choice then water. The water

Page 16 • www.bouldercountykids.com

must be warm to work properly. The more glitter glue the slower the glitter will take to settle. Fill to the top and crazy glue the lid shut. Stress Balls: I prefer using lentils for a more dense stress ball or use Orbeez (available on Amazon or Target amoung other places), for a fun squishy stress ball. (Thank you M for introducing me to the world of Orbeez balls!) Orbeez balls take several hours to expand, so best to make these and let them sit overnight or prepare them first thing in the morning. Take a transparent balloon, use a small funnel over the opening and fill in with desired substance. You may want to take the funnel off a few times and blow into the balloon creating a little more space. Tie off and you have a stress ball! These items could be fun in the sensory table too! Salt Art: You will need chalk, salt, paper plates or heavy paper, and a clear container. I recommend a shower curtain or a large piece of paper for the floor. Pour out some salt onto the paper plate/paper and rub the chalk on it until the pile is the color of the chalk. Use the chalk like a rolling pin over the salt. Pour into the container. Repeat with a new color of chalk. When pouring in, you can have even or more on one side creating a slanted look. Put lid on. When completed, you will have a colorful salt art! Make Jewelry: Get a container of mixed beads/buttons/gems and some string.

Make braided bracelets or necklaces with a mixture of beads/buttons/gems. Make matching sets with patterns. Make a Book: This can be done with small paper with punched holes and string to tie them together or you can use an oversized easel pad of paper. Use artwork and text and to make a story. This can be a solo activity or do it together all at once or in chapters.

LET’S MOVE

Inside Snow Ball Fight: You will need a minimum of a dozen plush balls. The more the merrier! A bundle of white plush balls can be found online at Best Buy or Amazon or colored ones are often at the Dollar Store. Similar ideas are a water balloon fight and Nerf gun war! Wash the Car: This one definitely depends on your child’s age. It can be a lot of fun especially for the younger ones.

Snail Mail: Send a loved one (grandparents, aunt, uncle, cousin, beloved friend, etc.) a homemade card, letter, painting, or craft item. Special Pet Day: If you are able, go to the pet store and let the kids pick something out for your animals. Have a dog? Take them to the pond or park. Have a cat? Make your cat a puzzle box out of a shoe box. Cut holes just big enough for their paws and arm to reach in. Tape down the lid. Put string and various toys inside. Don’t have a pet but know of one that you like? Buy it something special and bring it to them. Spa Day: Paint your child’s fingernails and toe nails. Do facials complete with a head massage and cucumber slices on their eyes.

Publisher’s Note: My mother had some fun projects for younger children. Give them a bucket of water and a paint brush and have them paint the house or a fence It can keep them occupied for quite a long time and the worst case scenerio is that they will get a little wet. One other project that is great for younger children is to use pudding mix for finger painting. It sets up well and if they put it in their mouth everybody is okay!

ing them off to college with very little money management experience and expecting them to know what to do. Similar to academics and sports, they need to be shown and practice money management skills while in middle and high school to provide them the experience they need to be successful once they begin to live on their own. You can send your high school grad off to college with the money management skills and experience they need to ensure that they are on the right track – heading the right direction. Set up expectations and ground rules—not too tight but not so loose. This involves setting up monthly budget. Even though they may be living in the dorms their first year, with meals being provided for, discuss with them other expenses they might incur such as laundry, an occasional lunch or dinner outing, entertainment, shopping, etc. Explain how they will need to manage their money to get them through each month. Inspect what you expect so there are no surprises. Let them know that you will be checking their expenses every two weeks. As they show competency of living within their budget…reward them and begin that toward monthly as you see fit.

Understand there will be some pot holes. Unexpected expenses and making mistakes are very common, especially for young adults. Catching things early before they compound into big problems is key. How you handle it can make all the difference in the world. “Working things out together” will often lead to more positive results. Explain the costs associated with bad credit and the negative impact it plays on our lives for many years. For example, financing rates are higher so credit costs more, auto insurance costs more, and it may inhibit you from landing a job. Help them understand that maintaining good credit makes life more enjoyable. Money management is fairly basic once you set up a budget and live within your means. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It’s difficult to start out on the financial road to success, but once you’re on it, it’s certainly a nice ride. WHAT DO I DO NOW, ROMONA? A A Romona Scholder, M.A., RNCS Psychotherapist

Q

I am concerned that my brother-in-law is working too hard. He has a one-and-a-half year old and is just finally getting some sleep. The thing that concerns me is that all he does is work, take care of the baby and try and keep up with the house and the yard. His wife works very hard too. He does not seem to have any time for socializing with his friends, going to the gym or any other interests. He seems stressed and depressed. Do you have any advice for him? Signed concerned sister.

A

“This too shall pass.” Having a new baby or a toddler in the house usually means that everyone’s life is thrown out of balance for a while. It’s important to remember that great Sufi saying “This too shall pass.” I suspect that your brother-in-law’s overworking stems from that fact. He may also be taking refuge in the comfort of work. Work can offer a soothing rhythm and dependability lacking in the rest of one’s life. We know that the transition from being a two-person couple to a three-person family can be difficult. We think we know what it’s going to be like, this idealized family that we’ve

planned for so long but the reality can be a shock. This is true for both men and women. You are probably correct in your assessment of your brother-in-law’s mood. I’m fairly certain your sister’s mood is not much better as the best predictor of one’s happiness is the happiness of one’s mate. In past generations we had multiple family members around to lighten the load and to share the tasks of childcare but now we are on our own. I was once at a Buddhist wedding where the monk who was officiating addressed the room of family and friends. He told us that it was our job to help the couple stay together on their road through life. That we needed to step up and offer help when we saw a need. Is there something that you can do to help? Perhaps you could offer childcare more often to give them both a break. Or ask them what they would like you to do to help…perhaps a prepared meal on Thursdays. This is not interference on our part, but a necessity.

Q

What is the definition of a mentally healthy person? When we get our annual physical they can tell us if we are healthy by our blood panels and some by looking at us. How do we know if we are mentally healthy? Signed curious.

Years ago, I was an instructor at a school of nursing and one of my classes was titled Mental Health in Nursing. A guest lecturer was Dr. John Talley, who went on to found the Jung Institute of Santa Fe. He began his lecture on mental health by saying “Life is not happy. Life is a series of happy moments and mental health is being able to enjoy them when they come along.” Does life give you pleasure or are you angry all the time. Are you bitter about your life or satisfied with how you’ve handled your affairs? Can you enjoy the beauty around you and feel the love of your friend and family? In short, can you enjoy the happy moments when they come along? We all have an internal dialogue, a conversation we have with ourselves as we go through our day. Pay attention to it. Is it calm and grateful or angry and resentful? Good mental health comes down to how well we function in the world.

Q

My family doesn’t appreciate me. I give my brother ’s family gifts and never hear back from them. No thank you notes, no phone call, nothing. They spend 10 minutes with me to open their presents and then they are out of there. I am getting really tired of feeling like my family really doesn’t care about me and they just invite me for the gifts. Signed frustrated.

I’ve always thought about writing a book called “The Tyranny of Gifts.” Gifts are rarely given without strings attached, expectations in place and dues owed. If it feels like your family takes advantage of and exploits you, please limit your gift giving. Their behavior will not change but you will feel better. I’ve seen people limit their gift giving to children under 10 years of age, which is a non-aggressive way to change your gift giving practices. Or instead of buying toys, put $10 in an envelope or buy a gift card at a department store. Expecting your family to change while you simply repeat what you did last year does not work. In establishing a different gift giving relationship with them, perhaps you’ll see that the rest of the relationship needs upgrading as well. Do you ever go out to dinner at a local eatery together? Do you attend the children’s basketball games or school plays? It would be a good thing if you became more involved in their lives. Sometimes a problem in one area signals a problem overall.

Learning to make corrections.

I

think it is important to own our mistakes and make corrections. Unfortunately, we live in a society that at times is quick to punish mistakes. Punishment creates

a fear that results in some people becoming quick to shift responsibility away from owning their mistakes. Instead, they deflect responsibility by blaming others, telling lies about what happened, and remaining silent. Headlines are filled with

examples of these deflections. This saddens me for a couple of reasons. The first is that mistakes, in my opinion, are opportunities to learn, evolve and advance as human beings. If we don’t take responsibility, we deprive ourselves from these opportunities, and are prone to repeating the mistakes. Secondly, if there was harm from the mistake, the people who were hurt don’t get to recover from the harm. They are left holding the bag, so to speak. The antidote to punishing mistakes is to normalize them and seize the opportunity to transform the mistakes into a knowledge, character and/ or spiritual development. The truth is that we are human, and every single one of us makes mistakes. Mistakes are not a reflection of our characters. In fact, I would say that our ability to own our mistakes and learn from them and make things right is a better reflection of our characters. Personally, I would prefer to be with people who admit their faults and strive through meaningful learning, amends and change processes to move forward and proverbially, “make lemonade out of lemons”.

The question for me then becomes, “As we parent, how can we counter the punitive and perfectionistic culture we live in, so our children can develop their character by learning from not ‘getting it right’?” Here are some steps we may want to consider: 1) Own our mistakes. For example, if we show up late to an appointment, we can say, “I was late.” If we incorrectly added up the allowance we give our children, we can say, “Oops, I added incorrectly.” 2) Demonstrate how we correct our mistakes. For example, if we are late to an appointment, we can model a meaningful apology to our children. We can say, “I apologize for being late. Is there something I can do to make things right?” If the person, responds with, “It is okay.” We can thank them. If the person has a reasonable request we can honor it. We also, can own that we may have been overly stressed by the delay and make things right for ourselves. We can examine whether we take on more time demands than we can handle. If so, we can become a little more selective about the time commitments we make. If our mistake was an incorrect addition, we can look at how we can be more accurate in adding things by practicing our addition skills, using a calculator to check our numbers, or asking for help to check our addition. 3) Acknowledge and celebrate the successful adoption of corrective measures.

Using the example of being late, we can celebrate as we become more realistic in our expectations when making appointments. Likewise, we can be happy when we change our habit and add a ten-minute buffer, so we are more likely to arrive on time or early for our appointments. For the addition example, we can note how being methodical helps us make fewer mistakes. 4 ) Be gracious when our children make mistakes. Normalize the mistake and support corrective steps, just like we do through our own modeling described in steps 1, 2, and 3, above. We can say something like, “Accidents happen.” For example, if the accident was that they broke a toy, we can say, “I see the toy broke when you sat on it, let’s try to fix it. Would you like help?” Or, if they made a mistake

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH on their homework or on a test, we can say, “I came up with a different answer. Do you want to walk through this and explain how you got your answer, and I can tell you how I got mine?” And, follow up with “corrective” measures. We can fix the toy together, or encourage our children to develop new skills.

5) Acknowledge and celebrate our children as they take responsibility and take corrective measurements. We can say something like, “I am so proud you took responsibility for accidentally breaking your toy.” I liked how you apologized and helped to fix it. That to me, is an act of courage.” When they learn a new skill, we can tell our children, “I so enjoyed watching you learn from the mistake on your homework. It is so cool to watch you learn new skills so

you can solve similar problems correctly, in the future.” For both situations, we can add something like, “I feel proud and happy, knowing you will do the right thing and learn from accidents, mistakes, or errors.” In summary, I believe mistakes are a part of life. As parents, we can model by acknowledging our own mistakes, taking corrective measures, and celebrating our own evolution as we learn and/or make things right and move forward. We can also be gracious with our children as they make their mistakes and celebrate when they learn from their mistakes. I encourage you to try this. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to reach out to me: Jessica@openingtopossibilities. com. I would love to hear about your experience adopting these practices.

(303) 652-9162 Contact - Admissions Office Ages: PS-8th Grade ACSI Accredited & Licensed August - May Program Days and Hours: M-F. 8:30 am to 3:15 pm. Classical Christian education. Engaging minds, inspiring virtue... preparing for life. A high-quality education is important. But, education is more than just what you can accomplish; it is the shaping of persons into the very images we were created to become. RMCA cares about what matters and creating an environment where a child can think, and do, and grow toward God and others. Leaders stand out from the crowd and stand up for what is true. Our philosophy incorporates the best thoughts on education over the centuries, our methods whisper of the past while remaining the best preparation for the future; our students are not told what to think; they are taught how to think for themselves; our community thrives on family activities and shared values; our academic pursuits are worthy of thoughtful conversation and guided practice.
