BOULDER COUNTY KIDS

THE GIFT OF BOREDOM

by Liana Oram

“I

’m bored!” Those words often strike terror in the hearts of parents and caregivers in the summer. After all the planning and preparation for the summer ahead, there are still often gaps of time with “nothing to do.” Rather than feeling guilty or scrambling to find a new activity, perhaps understanding the gift of boredom will help support both parent and child during this unscheduled time. Boredom is most often a response to not being entertained. In a world that constantly bombards us with visual and auditory information, quiet time is often mislabeled as boredom. The truth is our brains need quiet time. We must figure out ways to be comfortable in our own company and give our brains time to reflect and refresh. Having time without planned activities is also important to developing creativity, selfBOULDER

motivation, and adaptability – all essential qualities in this hurried world. So, what do you do as a parent when your child cries out in boredom? One thought is to try to determine if they are just looking for connection. Stopping for a moment and sitting with your child may give them the energy to refocus on something of their own choosing. Offering attention rather than ideas and activities supports them in the process of problem solving rather than simply offering to entertain them. Questions like: “Are you feeling the need to move around?” or,“Do you want to do something inside?” help them analyze their needs and guide them to possible activities. It is also helpful to be proactive and help your 3000 CENTER GREEN DRIVE

FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED SINCE 1989

Page 6 • www.bouldercountykids.com

child identify activities that they can do on their own in the future. Here are a few examples of things you can do with your child and then remind them of these when they are looking for something to do. The most important thing is the next time you hear your child say they are bored, don’t get frustrated with your child, but rather see that they are needing to learn to self-manage their time and energy and that is the gift of boredom. Here are some ideas for activities you can do with your child to help give them options when they are needing something to do independently:

TAKE A GRATITUDE WALK

This is simply a walk where everyone looks for things to be thankful for. It

is a fun and simple way to help our children observe the world around them while simultaneously developing a grateful heart. Being thankful for everything from insects to snack bars is an insightful and often entertaining way to see what is important to your child and start a great conversation.

OBSERVE INSECTS

Whatever your child’s age, stopping to observe bugs can be a quiet and spontaneous activity. Getting on your belly and gently pulling back the grass to see who and what walks across your newly created stage can be an amazing experience. Sitting in front of flowers to watch the pollinators and other insects that visit is also a great conversation starter to help children see the importance of insects in our natural world.

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS

QUIET TIME

The brain needs quiet time to organize, to question, to wonder. This can be done watching clouds, closing your eyes to feel a breeze, or just sitting. Learning to be comfortable in the quiet times is an important life skill and practice will help children see this as a valuable activity.

game because they can all participate at their own level.

HANDWORK

Knitting, crocheting, and embroidery—all of these activities offer a child quiet time to reflect while still focused on an activity. We also know these activities support strong brain development.

HIDE AND FIND

Choose a simple object and take turns hiding it in a certain area and letting children find it. Depending on the age, you can offer hints using basic vocabulary “It is near the brown stool”, or more complex definition hints, “It is beside the tool used to dig in our garden.” Either way, children of all ages love this

FINAL NOTES:

• Helping children learn these and other valuable skills and hobbies will greatly reduce their sense of having nothing to do. • Be sure to make ageappropriate materials available to your child that they themselves can access.

• Don’t make the parental mistake of filling all of your child’s free time with structured activities. • Be sure to schedule some unstructured free time and help your child understand how to utilize that time to relax, unwind, explore, and be creative and imaginative.

h a v e w r i t ten before about “biophelia,” the human need to have regular contact with nature. Now there is much evidence that shows how important this is for entire communities, especially urban ones. It is important to design communities so that contact with nature is “built in” to all project planning. This is actually called “biophilic design.” The idea is to increase people’s chances of connecting with nature in their daily lives, which is even more important for children! We sometimes talk of green and blue spaces. Green spaces apply to vegetation, such as grasses, plants, bushes, and trees. Blue spaces are ones that contain water, like streams, ponds, lakes, waterfalls, rivers, and harbors,

for example. Some may be totally natural, and some may be human-made, with various

Page 8 • www.bouldercountykids.com

gradients in between. All are good and important modifiers of human behavior. Contact with nature has been shown to support a whole range of health benefits and can also promote social harmony, therefore leading some people to be more generous and caring. It may bring individuals closer to each other in more friendly relationships. In other words, they become more neighborly! This usually gives them a greater sense of belonging to the community and a sense of satisfaction. Nature clearly seems to have such power.

Simply viewing beautiful nature scenes can bring out positive social behavior such as kindness, altruism, resource-sharing, and more cooperative behavior, even in the presence of strangers. It has also been shown that being near or surrounded by nature develops higher levels of mutual trust and a willingness to help one’s neighbors, that is, to more easily help one another. One study involved 145 public housing residents living in identical residences. Those living with views of concrete and asphalt were reported to have more aggression and violence than those living with views of grass and trees, that is, with “green” views. What was even more interesting was that the greening of urban vacant lots often reduced the rates of vandalism and violent crimes, especially when the local residents were involved in creating the greenery, such as community gardens. This shows the sense of awe that nature brings out in humans. It creates a profound response to what they perceive as “the wonder of nature,” which can inspire people to solve problems together more cooperatively and creatively. This mutual trust and willingness to help one another is usually absent in barren settings that are devoid of nature. It makes more obvious the need for green (and blue) spaces in urban community settings. People with little or no connection with nature certainly benefit from the company of friends and family

who lead them into contact with nature and inspire them to have joyful times therein. This contributes to their own health and well-being and, therefore, benefits other species in the ecosystem because of these peoples’ developing respect for all forms nature. Dr. Thorne is founder and honorary president of Thorne Nature Experience (formerly Thorne Ecological Institute), a nonprofit organization headquartered in Boulder. For 65 years they have helped “connect youth to nature!” For information about their programs, check their website at www. thornenature.org or email info@ thornenature.org or please call (303) 499-3647, ext. 100.

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH Let’s Relax and Go To Your Happy Mind Place by Tatum Oman Uhrick LPC, RPT-S

T

here are many ways to help oneself to be more present and to worry less and relax. I will be teaching two techniques, progressive relaxation and creating your happy mind place. These are tools that can help you throughout your entire life. You can do one or the other or both. They can also be done by yourself or with a helper. My hope is that you find these as useful as some of my clients do. Now let’s go on a calming adventure.

PREFACE TO THE TEACHING The techniques below can help you to be more present. Why is this a good thing? If you are constantly living in the past or dreaming about the future, your current life will pass you by. Before you know it, you can be in the future still dreaming about the future. You are missing out on what is happening right now. These techniques can also help you to have less worries. Worrying in general can be hard to stop and is not very fun. This action can lead to sleep disturbances that can lead to more issues. These tools can also encourage relaxation which is good for your overall well-being.

PROGRESSIVE RELAXATION For children, have a parent read the following before bed. Or for an adult, record yourself saying the following and listen to it. Let’s begin. Please lie down and close your eyes. Let your body sink into the bed. Relax and let go. Take three deep breaths making your belly go up and down. Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out. All thoughts and tension are leaving your body. You are safe. Now, we are going to be going through your body from your toes to the top of your head, relaxing each body part. Let’s get started. Think about your toes. Wiggle your toes. Now let all tension go and relax your toes. Think about your feet and your ankles. Move your feet from side to side. Now let your feet fall whichever way they want to. Think about your calves. Tense your calves. Now let it go. Think about your knees and your thighs. Tense your thighs. Now let it go. Let your legs

Page 14 • www.bouldercountykids.com

fall whichever way they want to. Now think about your butt. Tense your butt and now let it go. Let yourself sink into the bed. Think about your arms and hands. Are you holding your arms a certain way? Let your arms and hands be relaxed. If you are holding onto anything, let them rest on top of the item. Think about your shoulders then neck. Are you holding your head straight up? Let your head fall to the side and sink into the bed. Think about your mouth and jaw. Move your jaw around. Are you clenching your teeth and jaw? Let it go. Relax and let go. Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out. Think about your eyes and eyebrows. Are you keeping your eyes shut tightly? Making your eyebrows move downward or inward? Let your eyes simply rest closed. If you need to, open them and gently close them. Now think about the top of your head. Your head and entire body is relaxed and sinking into the bed. Relax…let go. As you scan your body once more, think about an ocean wave

rolling in with your breath. Concentrate on the ocean wave moving in, breathe in; wave rolling out, breathe out. You are now calm and relaxed.

CREATING YOUR HAPPY MIND PLACE This is a series of questions to help you create your happy mind place. It can be helpful to have someone ask you the questions and you (or the other person) write down your answers. Yo u c a n a l s o r e a d t h e questions yourself and journal them creating your happy mind place. Have fun! We want to create a happy place so focus on the positive only. There are no bad, unsettling things here. What do you see for landscape? Mountains, a forest, a tree, the beach, a lake…What is around you? What time of day is it? Daytime, nighttime? Early morning or sunrise? Dark into the night? What colors are the sun or moon creating? What other colors do you see? What is the weather like? What season of the year is it? Are there clouds? Describe them. Are they big and fluffy or straight across?

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH What does it feel like? Warm, a crisp chill to the air? What are you doing? Flying, soaring, laying on something, walking, in something? What can you feel under your hands or feet or body? What can you hear? An animal moving around in the bush, waves crashing, laughing in the distance, wind, a chipmunk eating a nut? What can you smell? Salt water, flowers, trees, food, animals? What can you taste? Water, salt, fruit from a tree, something sweet? Is there anything or anyone with you? Any animals, bugs, people? Describe each one and what they are doing. Is there anything else you would like to add? This is your place. It can be however you would like. What is the name of your place? This place is only

yours. You can go there anytime and anywhere. You can change your place. If negative thoughts start to creep into your brain; focus on one part of your happy place. Also, try focusing on slowing your breath and breathing from your belly for deeper breathing. Some people enjoy listening to nice music while closing their eyes and thinking about their happy place.

PRACTICING Now you know how to go on a calming adventure that only requires you. Now it is time to practice! As you practice, you will find it is easy to accomplish a calm mind and body. I enjoy doing the progressive relaxation at bedtime; however, you can do this anytime you feel like you want to relax your body. I recommend that you try and take 45 minutes to go through

your entire body. Then over time, you can shorten the length of time to as short as five minutes. You may naturally shorten the length of time and fall asleep faster. If you created an elaborate happy mind place, try to focus on one element within your place. Then, expand as you relax and feel ready. I recommend you practice going to your happy mind place for at least 10 minutes a day for 30 days. Be proactive and it will be easier to go to your happy mind place and stay there.

KEEP IT YOURS Your happy mind place is yours. Sometimes people get excited and want to share with others about the place they have created. Be mindful of who you share with. Only share with people who will be non-judgemental. In other words, do not share

with anyone that may be negative or pick apart your place. Keep your happy place your happy place! I hope for many moments of a calming mind and body for you.

Taylor’s Blog Leadership

by Taylor Cannon

A

ny curmudgeon you might find in a small town coffee shop complaining about politicians will vouch for the fact that a good leader is hard to come by. And in today’s contentious political climate, the need for such leaders is starkly apparent, if not downright dire. Stop for a moment to consider the qualities that you value in a leader who inspires, rallies, and maintains consistent and longterm support. Of course, drive and charisma never hurt, but I think many qualities of people who might continually seek positions of power over the course of their lives are not necessarily people who have taken the time to think critically about the type of leader that the world truly needs. We want to be led by someone who demonstrates level-headedness, humility, compassion and open-mindedness. Read on for a few ways to encourage important leadership qualities while parenting, and have some hope for the next generation of problem-solvers!

LET THEM FACE ADVERSITY

Most fully-functional, responsible adults feel a natural urge to protect children from harm, and there’s cer-

tainly nothing wrong with this. But it’s important to draw the distinction between true “harm” and something that may be difficult or uncomfortable for the child in the short term but will prove to be a beneficial experience in the long term. When kids scuffle amongst themselves, resisting the urge to jump in and try to find a solution to the problem for the children opens the door for them to fix the issue on their own. They learn the power of their own problem-solving skills, and gain confidence and a sense of competency from resolving a conflict without the assistance or guidance of an adult.

attest that my generation is plagued by a lack of conviction when it comes to the choices we make. We are often paralyzed by indecision, unable to believe that we do have the capacity to choose the right path and stick with it. Maybe these fears are a result of being raised to believe that we could achieve our dreams before being thrust into a recession with sub-optimal prospects for our professional careers and financial futures….but I have a hunch that we might feel a bit braver about our choices if we hadn’t been shielded from making them for the duration of our childhoods.

GIVE THEM THE CONFIDENCE TO MAKE THEIR OWN DECISIONS AND LEARN FROM THEIR MISTAKES

GIVING KIDS OPTIONS

As a millenial myself, I

But not too many of them can help them feel equipped to make the right decisions about their lives going forward, and to learn from their mistakes when that doesn’t

pan out. Even small decisions can have an impact; try giving your child the option to choose whether to take a bath first or eat dinner first. Or give them a couple of choices of what to eat for lunch, and then have them assist you in its preparation. Afterwards, have a discussion about the choice that was made. How did your child feel about their decision in retrospect? Why did they make the choice that they did, and what would they do differently in the future? These small opportunities communicate to your child that you value his input, and they teach him to have confidence in his ability to make decisions and learn from them as well.

TEACH THEM THE VALUE IN HONORING A COMMITMENT

Whose child hasn’t told their parents that they want to quit piano lessons two

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH weeks in? It’s only natural that the temptation to avoid the weekly fight to get your child to practice and attend those expensive lessons each week can be hard to resist. But there’s something to be gained from pressing your child to at least continue with lessons until the recital, and congratulating him on his achievements at that point. It’s not easy to stand by a commitment you’ve made, but your child will respect himself more for it, and others will value their integrity and feel that they can trust and rely upon them.

SHOW THEM THAT NOT ONLY IS THERE NO SHAME IN AN APOLOGY, BUT THAT OTHERS WILL TRUST AND RESPECT YOU MORE FOR IT

Willingness to own and subsequently learn from one’s own errors is an essential quality in a team player, and particularly in a leader. This kind of self-awareness and humility shows those around you that you are able to be honest in claiming your actions and their consequences as your own, and it promotes the expectation that everyone on the team does the same. It is only through this kind of sincerity that it is possible to improve with time. Openly apologizing to those who were affected by your actions also breeds respect and helps to eliminate resentment, making the team significantly more effective as a unit. Although it’s hardly commonplace for parents to apologize to their children, it’s important to remember that demonstration is a great form of teaching. When you say or do something that may have inadvertently hurt your child in some way, take the opportunity to say that you are

sorry. You are your child’s ultimate role model, and if even you are willing to apologize when no one is forcing you to do so, your child will learn that a sincere apology is an essential element of healthy relationship-building and communication. BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH LESSONS LEARNED WHEN KIDS EARN MONEY services to sell more expensive items. Donate unsold items to your favorite nonprofit organizations who distribute items to needy families in our community.

by Steve Carr

A

n excellent way to teach kids the value of money is through rewarding them when they help out around the house. Earning money gives kids something to do and provides them a sense of accomplishment, helps develop their skills, decreases their need to ask for money, and household tasks will get done. In addition, you can take advantage of the opportunity to discuss and establish savings and spending plans. They’ll quickly learn that earning money can be fun and challenging, and saving for something special might be more rewarding than quickly spending it.

Earning allowance: Many parents agree that providing their children an allowance is good. However, there’s a great debate on when to start, how much, and what the allowance is tied to. In general, allowances should be age-

appropriate and expectations should be defined and monitored. Parents who provide allowances typically tie them to household chores. These responsibilities might include helping to prepare meals and clean up, laundry (at least sorting and putting it away), picking up the house and putting toys away, picking up after the pets, dusting, vacuuming, and watering plants. Earning extra money: These activities can include cleaning the garage, basement, and attic. Deep cleaning their own rooms, closets and drawers. To gain their buy-in and commitment, allow your kids to define the chores they want to accomplish and negotiate the price. Make a weekly checklist and post it on the refrigerator. Out with the old: One person’s unneeded items are another’s treasure. Turn old toys, DVDs, video games, electronics, clothing, furniture and other household items into cash by having a garage/yard sale. Make sure that everyone is involved in sorting, pricing, and displaying the items. Consider Craigslist and other online

Helping your neighbors, especially the elderly: You know many of your neighbors and some of them could use a little help. Encourage your kids to offer to clean their windows, porches, patios, garages, as well as clean out flower beds, pick weeds, and remove debris in their yard. Ask if they have any other tasks that need to get done. Plan to go with them to help get chores set up, define expectations, and receive payment. There are many ways that kids of any age can begin earning money. Younger children can start in your own home which helps them gain skills, experience, and a sense of responsibility that will prepare them for later on. And finally, when you help your children develop savings and spending plans, they will reap the dividends of their hard work. Good luck! Premier Members Credit Union— The Artisans of Banking. WHAT DO I DO NOW, ROMONA?

Romona Scholder, M.A., RNCS Psychotherapist

Q

We have an aunt who is really cheap! She is always complaining about what things cost and always tries to get a better price and leaves just the minimal tips. She has lots of money but seems to have a complex about it. It is embarrassing to the rest of the family sometimes. Can we do anything about this to help her lighten up? Signed frustrated family member.

A

Money is a dirty little secret in our culture. Good manners dictate that we not discuss money or how much something cost or our salaries or how much we owe or have in savings. And here your aunt makes it the focal point of her existence and conversation. Frugality can be a life choice. It need not be viewed as neurotic behavior although it may be annoying to others. On the opposite end of the spectrum is the spendthrift who spends money too easily and beyond their means. They also make us uncomfortable because of their recklessness. There may be many reasons why your aunt is frugal. It could come from fear of poverty as happened in 1929 and 2008 when markets

crashed. Perhaps she feels the money isn’t hers and that she doesn’t deserve it or that she’s charged with guarding the money for the next generation. This also gives her life a purpose or a reason around which to operate. T h e r e ’s a d i f f e r e n c e between cheapness and frugality. Cheapness is driven by the bottom line, buying shoddy goods because it costs the least. Frugality is based on value such as a great car from last year’s line, which is hugely on sale. It may be pointless to speculate on your aunt’s righteous frugality but how does it affect you? You mentioned that it embarrassed you. We believe our relationship to money should be easier and more gracious, perhaps even generous. It should not cause discomfort in others, as your aunt’s behavior seems to do. Perhaps if you thought about it differently, your aunt’s behavior would be more understandable and less annoying.

behavior persists, it could be attention-getting or a reflection of a nutritional need. Your doctor will probably address that possibility with some basic blood tests. A good response to this behavior is to distract your child with something else like a carrot stick or a food that is both appropriate and appealing. Crackers might do the trick. Paying too much negative attention could reinforce the behavior. If the behavior persists, be sure to mention it to your pediatrician as they may wish to do further testing, as it could be something more serious.

Q

I read something the other day that “The opposite of addiction is not sobriety but connection.” How can we best help our family members with addiction issues?

and love them in spite of their problems. We criminalize their behavior and treat them like pariahs. We despise and reject them. This reinforces their feelings of isolation and lack of connection. I don’t want to be a Pollyanna about this, seeming to reduce a complex and difficult problem to a simple lack of love. An addict’s behavior is a deterrent to our wish to connect. But our attempt to connect rather than to punish is a new way to interact with the addicts in our midst. One source of connection that’s been around since 1935 is A lc o h o lic s A n o n y mo u s . Meetings are always available and support is just a phone call away. AA is based on the concept of connection and its importance in reestablishing one’s place in the world.

Signed concerned family member.

Q

My 3-year-old son is eating paper. I have to pull it out of his hand and make him stop. I don’t know what to think of this. Is there something wrong with him? Signed Mom.

A

Eating paper or other inedible items such as dirt or wood or library paste is called Pica. Most children will put things in their mouths out of curiosity but soon realize that it doesn’t taste good. When the

This conversation was started by a Ted Talk entitled “Everything you think you know about addiction is wrong,” by Johann Hari. He said that the opposite of addiction is connection. Alcoholics Anonymous says that the final stage of addiction is isolation. Whether addiction is caused by the lack of connection or simply results in isolation, this discussion gives us a new way to respond to the addicts in our lives. Instead of punishing them by withholding our love and affection, we need to include them in our lives

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH The sanctity of childhood emotional interactions, and finally cognitive function. By offering content before the healthy development of the other parts of the brain, we are short circuiting how the brain operates. ur children are being asked to grow up much faster than is developmentally reasonable, without the face-to-face interactions that they need to make sense of all that they experience. Consequently, we are seeing higher rates of stress, anxiety and physical isolation that manifest as physical, social, mental, psychological and emotional ailments. dren are exposed to images, sounds and concepts that we were never exposed to when we were the same age. This creates for them a lot of pressure, as they are not equipped to handle all that they are exposed to—constant social media messages, advertisements, ideas, and fast moving video clips that are loud, graphic, sexual and violent in a way that was not the case even five, ten or twenty years ago. Some of this content is even shocking, overwhelming and boggling to adults. The side effects are magnified because children are getting fewer positively attuned, face-to-face, social interactions with adults so they can process and make sense of what they are exposed to. There is a way to prevent and/or reverse the stress and anxiety that is being created by having children behind screens, and to honor the natural way that the brain develops. The brain develops from the inside out—from the parts that regulate basic body functions, then social-

Resist the temptation to succumb to the advertisements that promise to make your child more intelligent by having them interact with apps. It is proven that the more encouraging conversation that includes eye contact a child has, the more neurons they build and the more on track their brain development. Apps cannot and do not meet the social and emotional needs of children. Only healthy, positive social interactions do. 2) reducing our own screen time. If we are checked out behind screens, it is difficult to be there for our children. It is important for their healthy development that we have encouraging, in-person conversations with them. It behooves us to look at ways to meet the needs we are getting met while we are on our screens that are less detrimental. For example, if one of our needs is to meet our social needs, we can create face-to-face, instead of on-line, communities that

include our children so we have both adult interactions and they get the interactions they need, from us and other adults and children. If it is for the instant gratification of someone liking our posts, we can surround ourselves with affirming people and affirm our own accomplishments and blessings. If it is for a break, we can include our children in a relaxation ritual or tell them what we are doing and do it, while giving them choices for healthy activities. To recap, our children need in-person interaction, more than they need screen time and apps. We also have needs as adults. With a little consciousness and work, we can meet our and our children’s needs without the huge cost of becoming checked out behind screens. I would love to know your thoughts and ideas. To
