Art is for Grown-Ups,Too! by Claudia Lewis

“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.”

“Why should we all use our creative power…? Because there is nothing that makes people so generous, joyful, lively, bold and compassionate, so indifferent to fighting and the accumulation of objects and money.” ~Brenda Ueland

~Marcel Proust

O

nce, while teaching high school art, I was trying without much success to encourage one of my students to put more effort into her art project. I saw that she had great, potential for creativity. It showed in the way she dressed and the way she interacted with her peers. She just wasn’t applying her creativity to her art projects. “Enid, I would love to see you put some of your creative energy into your sculpture,” I chided. “What does it matter?” she said. “I’m never going to be an artist, Miss!” Yes, indeed, what does it matter? Can’t we just leave art to the real artists? People with actual talent? What’s the point in learning any of this stuff anyway?

In truth, all of us have the potential to be artists, though only a few will ever become “Artists” in the institutional sense of the word. Looking at the big picture, it makes no difference whether you’re a famous artist or simply making art for the joy of it. In the everyday choices we make, we are all architects of our own lives. Some will design a life that is bright and cheery, others will revel in the dark and moody. Some will color their lives with spirituality, others will focus on play. This is exclusively and uniquely your path, your work of art. These everyday choices are the germ from which an artful life springs.

Compelled to Create

Art-making and artviewing are entirely differ-

ent practices. Art viewing belongs to the institutions where, as observers, we can concern ourselves with the finished products of others. In the role of art-maker, what matters is the process, the experience of exploring materials and the creativity that shapes the artwork. As humans, we are compelled to create. We remodel the kitchen, decorate at Christmas time, and tweak an old recipe to make it better. We sing in the shower, write love letters, and plant flowers. These impulses are present every day of our lives. We are born with the need to embellish our surroundings. As we age, we adopt and come to cherish familiar rituals and practice them as an essential part of our lives. Yet we fail to recognize these practices as artful living.

Talent is the Least Important Element

Art-making skills can be learned like math, driving, gardening, sports, or putting together a matching outfit for the day. Talent is only a small part, if any at all, of the success or failure of any given work of art. Art teachers can tell you stories about students whose talent easily surpassed that of themselves

who went on to fail art class because they lacked motivation. When something comes easily (perhaps the definition of talent?), many times we undervalue that thing. The truth is that determination, focus, curiosity, attitude and commitment are more critical than talent to the success of an artist. Maybe more. As David Bayles and Ted Orlando point out in their wonderful book, Art & Fear, the majority of art is made by ordinary people. True “artistic geniuses” come along maybe once or twice in a century. It is only because an artist has expressed himself in a concrete form and has kept at it in spite of his obstacles that we know about any given artist in the first place.

Evasive Tactics

Now that I am teaching adults more often than kids, I’ve noticed that most grown-ups have some deeply ingrained defense mechanisms “But I’m not creative.” “Everything I make is ugly.” “I can’t draw a straight line.” I have always been really bad at art.” Or, my personal favorite: “Do you know how old I’ll be by the time

I‌learn to paint‌throw a decent pot‌write a book‌ finish an art degree?â€? Answer: “The same age you will be if you don’t.â€? “I’m too old to start anything newâ€? is a common evasive tactic, an excuse for not taking any chances, and a strategy for avoiding failure. “I’ll wait until I retire to try that,â€? is the flip side of the same coin. Age, like talent, is irrelevant. All you need is to give yourself permission. I discovered when I began teaching adults that given the time and space to be themselves, adults of any age regardless of the labels applied in the outside world can thrive in the art classroom. Nothing thrills me more than to see a student’s eyes light up when they have made something they never thought possible during that process of exploration.

Let’s Play

Engaging in creativity is all about learning to take yourself lightly, to relearn how to play. Art reveals our strengths and forgives our weaknesses. The practice of art-making helps us understand how we operate as people. Am I overly cautious, a people-pleaser, results-oriented, impatient, a procrastinator? Do I ignore instructions or follow them to the letter? Am I judgmental of others or of myself? Do these traits enable me or get in my way? Art-making uniquely offers the opportunity to be yourself, to live in accordance with what you find to be true and meaningful. With it, you can express of the sum total of all your skills, desires, talents and knowledge, free from the roles assigned to you by circumstance or the expectations of others. Art for art’s sake can give you what you need to discover parts of yourself you’ve never met before.

BOULDER County Kids

Don’t Stop, Ever

Because I am acquainted with a lot of art students and art teachers, I know many adults who deeply loved the arts when they were younger, but somehow let that love slip away. For many of them, it started happening on graduation day. Art rarely thrives in a vacuum; it tends to wither when it has no reason for living, no audience or feedback. People who make things need others—even if they are just other explorers - to help them keep the spark alive. Take a class. Join a club. Show your artwork to your friends. It doesn’t matter what you do, but by all means, do it. This is what I know: Exploration of the arts is one of the best ways there is to grease the wheels on the journey to your authentic self. Art-making, whether you think you are good at it or not, is an excellent vehicle for the journey and a perfect lens through which we can discover the things that really matter.

THE ETHICS OF INVASIVE SPECIES

by Dr. Oakleigh Thorne, II

W

hen we talk about ethics, we are usually trying to figure out if something we’re doing is either right or wrong. We may say that we have a good moral way of doing things when we believe we are doing something right. So the words ethics and moral have almost the same meaning. You can look up these two words in the dictionary and maybe you can figure out a better way of saying what they mean than I have. Perhaps your parents can help explain these to you. Now when I tell you about an invasive species, I am talking about a certain kind of plant or animal that is not native to our area. They have

been brought here from some other part of the country or world, usually by people. Or in the case of a plant, it might get here by a seed having been blown a long way from someplace else by the wind. Or sometimes a species or kind of animal may just get here on its own. But usually people are to blame! I hope you understand that when I say species, I mean a particular kind of plant or animal, like a ponderosa pine tree, a lilac bush, an elk, or a coyote. Human beings are a species, also known as

Page 8 • www.bouldercountykids.com

Eurasian Collard-Dove

Homo sapiens in science. Do you know the species of bird that pulls worms out of your lawn in the spring? It’s an American Robin! Do you know the species name of our national bird? It’s a Bald Eagle, a big brown bird with a white head and white tail. Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about the ethics of how we look at invasive species. Is it right or wrong for us to try to get rid of them? If you have a lot of bind weed, an invasive plant, in your back yard, it’s probably easy for you and your parents to decide to pull it out or spray it. You want to kill it in any way possible because it is choking out the native plants that you want to have there. You have no problem making an ethical and moral decision to eliminate bind weed! But how do we treat invasive species of animals? Centuries ago the Spanish invaders of North America brought horses with them. Now we have all kinds of horses throughout our coun-

try. There are still herds of completely wild horses in some parts of the western United States. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) occasionally rounds them up and sells some of them. Is this good ethics? Many kinds of birds from other continents have been brought here and released. Well over a century ago, some man felt that the birds mentioned by Shakespeare, the great English playwright, should be brought across the Atlantic Ocean and released in New York City’s Central Park. He released several pairs of House (English) Sparrows and European Starlings. They multiplied and spread by the millions all over most of North America and became pests in many areas. They competed with native species of birds. People shot and trapped some of them. Was this good ethics? Finally, I will talk about the Rock Pigeon and the Eurasian Collard-Dove. We already have hundreds of

pigeons in Boulder County, and now we are beginning to get lots of Eurasian Collard-Doves. These certainly are invasive species! Do these doves compete with our native Mourning Doves? Should we try to eliminate them? These are indeed questions involving ethics! I think about them a lot. What do you think?

Tricky ways to sneak more protein in your breakfast (works for kids, too!)

M

by Kristin Savory, L.Ac.

omma always said, “Eat your breakfast.” And, she was right. Breakfast (or breaking the fast) is “the meal” to get the most mojo out of your day. A balanced breakfast with proteins, high-quality fats and slow-burning carbs will do more for stabilizing your blood sugar and balancing your hormones than just about anything. Take Kelly, for example. Kelly is a hard-working, stayat-home mom of two girls. She came to see me because her hot flashes were literally driving her crazy. She’d spike heat on most afternoons and soak her sheets at night. When she came to see me, we went through her food choices and found that her breakfasts were lacking. Once the coffee and toast wore off, her body would scream for more fuel. This started the whole reach for a quick carb snack, give-mequickie-food-now cycle. She just didn’t have the reserves in her breakfast choice to make it through till high noon let alone have her stable by the afternoon. Once she added a more substantial breakfast and increased her protein for her first meal of the day, she was able to get a better handle on her food choices throughout the day. And, her hot flashes went away. Not only that, but her clothes got a little looser and she started sleeping. We mommas can wrap our heads around eating more balanced meals, but what do we do when it comes to our kiddos? Most kids are known to be picky and difficult eaters. They’ll eat just about any-

thing if it’s sweet. But when it comes to protein and more nutrient-dense foods, they tend turn their cheek or have “just a little.” One study following a group of students found that those kids eating breakfast scored better on cognitive tests—especially ones that included visual tasks. The researchers took it one step further observing the same group of kiddos and compared sugary out-of-thebox cereal to oatmeal. The oatmeal eaters won again on test scores. In the United States, eggs tend to be the go-to-protein for breakfast. They’re affordable, usually in the fridge, and quick to scramble up. But what if your kids (or you) get tired of the same old scramble? That’s when you gotta get sneaky… er, creative. I stir eggs into just about anything: oatmeal, chai drinks, miso soup, you name it. I’ll even add more eggs than the cookie recipe calls for, then adjust the flour (about a ½ cup or so) and add a half a cup arrowroot. I have a great recipe for you. See page 11 for Oatmeal with Stealth Eggs. Kristin Savory, L.Ac. works with women who have thyroid issues. By using acupuncture, osteopathic bodywork and whole food nutrition, she helps her clients heal their thyroid and balance their hormones. Check out www.KristinSavory.com to get all her latest tips.

Oatmeal with Stealth Eggs Steel cut oats are the way to go. Soaking them overnight to make them easier to digest—and half the cooking time for your busy morning. 1 cup steel cut oats 2 cups water pinch salt coconut milk to taste 1-2 eggs cinnamon to taste 1. Place oats and water in a pot. Add salt. Cover and let the oats soak all night long on the counter. 2. In the morning, bring the oats to a boil over a medium high flame. 3. Once boiling, turn down the heat to a simmer. Take a minute to skim off any foam that might be floating on top. 4. Cover, and cook on simmer for 20 minutes. Although oats do contain protein, here’s where I up the protein for my crew by stiring in one or two eggs. 5. My kids love coconut milk and cinnamon in their oatmeal. For variety, we’ll add ground almonds, maybe a few frozen berries, (will cool the porridge), even a spoonful of coconut butter. Yum!

WHAT DO I DO NOW, ROMONA?

Romona Scholder, M.A., RNCS Psychotherapist

Q

With the onset of the selfie generation, my children seem to be pretty self-obsessed. They are ages 8 to 14 and are all about new cell phones, the right clothes, really expensive bikes, texting constantly, and social media. How can I make sure I am not raising narrcissists?

Signed concerned parents.

A

Some experts blame social media, Facebook, Twitter and all of the incarnations of “selfie-centered” culture for a rise in narcissistic behavior. This may be partially true but it might also be that we are becoming more narcissistic as a culture and that social media reflects that

fact. Parental over valuation and overindulgence can cause children to develops narcissistic traits. If parents tell their children that they are better than everyone else and that ordinary rules don’t apply to them, you are well on your way to fostering narcissistic traits. Feelings of equality and good self-esteem are goals that counteract the tendency to self-centeredness. The difference between self-esteem and narcissism is that with good self-esteem you believe you are as good as everyone around you while a narcissist believes he’s better. Many parents believe in teaching their children that they are better than average and that they’re destined to do great things. Not that they are just equal to others but better. Those children believe that rules that apply to ordinary people don’t apply to them and that their wishes come first. But this parental love and over-valuation is conditional on his not being ordinary or average but special in some way. Children that exceed and succeed are the new parental status symbol and the pressure on the child is extreme. If they fail to live up to parental expectations, it must be someone

else’s fault as they’ve been told they are exceptional. And so begins the vicious cycle we call narcissism. In order to combat the rise of narcissism in our children we need to help them develop empathy for others. Having a pet helps us to not think about ourselves first. So does volunteering to help others learn to read or going to a church with a youth group. Instead of giving blanket approval to a child, wait until they actually do something well and then praise. Narcissism pervades our society in the form of sexism, racism and religism. Men are better than women, whites are better than blacks and my religion is better than yours. Cultural Narcissism exists on a large scale in the world today. We’ve been taught that we’re the best, that ordinary rules don’t apply to us and that our wishes reign supreme.

Q

Our 70-year-old uncle seems to be getting more and more negative about things. He has always been on the sarcastic side but seems to be getting worse all the time. He is fairly active and healthy and takes great care of himself. Should we be concerned about this behavior?

Signed worried niece.

A

I hope that “taking great care of himself” includes visits to his doctor as changes in behavior can signal a medi-

Page 14 • www.bouldercountykids.com

cal problem. A diminished blood/oxygen supply to the brain needs to be addressed. But for right now, let’s talk about negativity and aging. Many years ago I read an article about the 10 rules of aging and the one I remember was, “Rant, don’t whine.” Some folks take that rule to heart in a big way. They feel that age gives them the right to NOT edit what they say. This is further enhanced by a normal thinning of the cerebral cortex, which is our brain’s editor and monitor of appropriate thoughts, word and deeds. So often what we think comes out of our mouths, unedited. Oftentimes, as people age, they become more of who they’ve been all along. So your uncle’s sarcastic tendencies have morphed into negativity. I don’t think that confronting him about his behavior will do anything but hurt his feelings. You might use a more positive approach like, “Uncle George, I’m certain that Susan did the best she could.” Or “You’re right Uncle George, things aren’t the same as they used to be, but let’s try to solve this problem anyway.” Your uncle is aging and he knows he’s slipping, cognitively, physically and mentally. This is frightening and can cause sadness and depression and negativity. We’ve all heard that growing old “ain’t for sissies.” Tolerance and empathy on your part will be necessary for a good relationship with your uncle.

How Do Vaccines Work?

W

by Carole Gedenberg

hen considering vaccination, it is important to understand how vaccines work in your body. Your body’s immune system is a lot like a microscopic team of superheroes, made up of white blood cells, antibodies, the complement system, and a few others. These superheroes fight villains such as bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. If they cannot fight them fast enough, the villains will multiply and cause symptoms of disease. What vaccines do is give your superhero team a picture of what the villains look like, so they can recognize them as soon as they enter the body, and fight them off quicker and easier. In other words, the purpose of vaccines is to trigger an immune response faster and with less harm than the original disease. three main types of vaccines:

1. Inactivated, (killed pathogens) 2. Live attenuated, (weakened pathogens) 3. Toxoid, (a piece of what’s inside the pathogen)

Inactivated vaccines are the most common type. The bacteria or viruses in the vaccine are killed, so your immune system can safely learn to recognize the pathogen that it is trying to fight off. These vaccines do not have the potential to cause actual disease. What they do is cause the immune system superheroes to practice fighting the villains, kind of like practicing on dummies, which may cause fever, sore muscles, crankiness, or other

symptoms. Some examples of inactivated vaccines are polio virus, HPV (human papillomavirus), HiB (Haemophilus influenzae B), pneumococcus (Streptococcus pneumoniae), meningococcus (Neisseria meningitidis), and Hepatitis A and B vaccines. Live attenuated vaccines are the next most common. These are made from bacteria or viruses that have been exposed to chemicals that make them weaker than the natural or “wild type” bacteria or virus. Since these pathogens are not killed completely, your superheroes aren’t just practicing, they are actually fighting the weakened villains. So it is possible to have symptoms that mimic the wild type disease, but less severe. Some people with weakened immune systems may not be able to fight them off, and can get the actual disease. People taking steroid medications or immune suppressants, or who have HIV or other immune deficiencies should consult a doctor about whether it is safe to receive these vaccines. Some examples of live attenuated vaccines are the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella), Varicella zoster (chickenpox), and rotavirus vaccines. Toxoid vaccines are made from just part of the pathogen, and are useful against certain bacteria that cause symptoms after the toxins inside them are released. These bacteria are like villains carrying a bottle of poison, and the vaccine gives the superheroes the poison to sample and build up resistance to it. An example of a toxoid vaccine is the DTaP

(diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis). So is it better to vaccinate, or let your immune system fight the actual disease? The decision to vaccinate is personal, and should be made after an informed discussion with your pediatrician. If you would like more information about what vaccines are recommended for your child’s age group, the CDC publishes an updated vacci-

nation schedule annually on their website, www.cdc.gov/ vaccines. Dr. Carole Gedenberg believes that health care should be more about caring and making people better. Izzy’s Garden

by Isabella Martinez

ello. My name is Isabella Martinez. I am a sixteenyear-old and currently a sophomore at Boulder High School. Summer is finally here! The sky, like blue silk, is vibrant, and the sun hangs like a ripened peach. The flowers are blossomed and appear to be drips of paint in the gardens. The mountains reach towards the sky and

life is flourishing. Summer is such a beautiful time of the year and a time to express beauty with words. Over the years, I have written poetry. This has helped teach me about how to write poems as well as the importance of reading them. There is so much to learn from words and the lyrical lines that they can form. Creating poems can be done in many different ways. Some of my

Page 16 • www.bouldercountykids.com

favorites are the haiku, the ode, the trade-off poem, and a poem describing how you write. The haiku is a very easy poem to create. It is done by having just three lines of words; however the first and last line only have five syllables but the middle line has seven (five seven five). This type of poem is often about the same subject throughout the whole length of it. An ode is a poem that is used to show appreciation towards something. It can be anything that you have interest towards and want to share why you like it. A trade-off poem is one of my favorites. It is a fun activity to do with friends or family and the final creation often ends in giggles or even amazement. There are a few different ways to do a trade-off poem. Someone can start off with a sentence that is passed too the next person and added on to. This passing continues until the writers agree it has come to an end. This can also be done by creating an acrostic poem (spelling out a word vertically) by writing a line for each letter. This is a great way to enjoy time with family and friends and often it becomes obvious in this activity that being silly and having fun is ageless. Lastly, I love writing poems about how I write. This is a wonderful way to discover your own thoughts on your writ-

ing and how you approach it. Ideas can be the color of ink you use when you write, the kind of paper you write on, and what you write about. All these poems are fun to do and can be found in many beautifully written books. Along with writing poetry it is very important to read poetry. Poetry is flavor. When you read a poem sweet and lovely, your mind smiles. When you read a poem with a dark feel, images and ideas flow through your mind. Each poem is different and can be a very useful factor in expanding the brain’s knowledge. Poetry encourages you to think in new ways and think about the greater depth being shared rather than just what can be seen on the surface through the letters. Overall, poetry is beautiful. There are so many different ways to create poetry from haiku to odes. Poetry is an impactful read; giving us knowledge as well as thought-provoking ideas. The joy formed in a poem never ends. Publisher’s Note: Izzy has published her first book along with published poet, Jack Collom, Petals of Poetry. Books will be available at the Boulder Book Store.

The Importance of Emotional and Physical Safety for Our Kids

by Jessica Dancingheart

T

here is a lot we are learning about the way the brain functions. In the words of the neuroscientist Jill Bolte Taylor, author of Stroke of Insight, “Biologically we are feeling creatures that think.” As information is processed, it first goes through our amygdala, which imprints it with emotion. If we perceive danger, then we go into a flight or fight response, and our “cognitive” brain function is impaired. If we feel safe, then we are able to learn and use our cognitive and creative abilities. This is corroborated by multiple theories regarding human behavior, including Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, which states that as our basic needs are met, safety being among them, then we can self-actualize our creative potential. This is important information for us to know as parents so we can offer our children environments and experiences that feel safe and we can teach them to create safety for themselves. Below are some ideas for how to create safety and respond when anxiety, fear or overwhelming feelings arise. 1) To the extent that we can, it helps to create consistency, rituals and simplicity in our children’s lives.

Children develop quickly. Much changes for them in their internal world. So having consistent routines and rituals, and familiar “simple” environments helps them feel safe. In that way, they can focus on one thing at a time, learn about the world around them, and develop all the skills that they need to navigate their world. 2) We need to help our children when the inevitable unexpected changes to their and our routines happen. When they are in a place of fear or overwhelm, we can calm them by embracing them physically and emotionally—holding them, listening to them, helping them rightsize whatever is scaring them, teaching them how to keep themselves safe where there are actual threats to their well-being, and when they are intimidated bitesizing tasks and/or teaching them to ask for help so they can reduce stress. Calming techniques can also include helping our children negotiate their feelings of frustration and overwhelming fear by helping them identify their needs, and making requests of themselves or others that will reduce their anxieties. 3) We need to have realistic expectations and respect

for who our children are and the developmental stage they are at in order that we don’t get mad at them or make demands on them that create fear and stress. Outwardly, our children may seem mature, yet their brains, as fast as they grow and change, are not like that of a grown adult. Also, each child is different, and children change quickly. To avoid undue stress, it is best to be aware of who they are at any given moment as opposed to who we want them to be or who they were yesterday. 4) Sometimes our fears are based on interpretations and assumptions that are not real threats to our wellbeing. It behooves us to learn and model healthy reactions to those fears because this will be a necessary longterm skill for our children. We can make transparent for them an ability to be aware of when we are going into fear and anxiety. For example, if we are about to lose it as we try to get a meal on the table, and there are multiple demands on us, we can take a deep breath, look around and take in what is actually happening as opposed to feeding the anxiety in our heads, and say out loud something like, “I am noticing that my breathing is shallow, and my

arms are feeling tingly. I am anxious and overwhelmed. I want to get all this stuff done. I want to yell for help. And I realize that my relationship with you is more important than yelling to get help so we can get a meal on the table on time.” We can even go as far as saying, “Gosh, I notice as I look around that we are all okay.” Then, we can follow the expression of what is going on with us with a request like, “Do you mind helping me by washing the salad? Or how about we don’t have dessert tonight and spend time together instead?” In summary, people need to feel safe in order to develop and function well in this world. To help our children feel safe we can create safe and calm environments, have realistic expectations of them, support them and teach them stress reduction skills, and model for them new responses to our own stresses.

Setting up a budget for kids OF any age by Steve Carr

W

hat is the BEST age to start setting up a budget with your kids? When they enter high school, planning to move onto college, planning to move out on their own, planning to get married, or beginning to raise kids? The answer is simple. Start as soon as they begin to ask for toys, candy, or anything new. If your kids are past these time periods, START TODAY. It is better to start now than never at all and having them learn by trial and error…which in most cases is very costly. The longer you wait, you’ll miss the formidable years when they can gain the biggest impact from the lessons learned. It is far better to help your children set up a budget BEFORE they enter into any of the life-stages mentioned above. If you think about it, it is stressful enough to be faced with any of these new phases of one’s life, and starting to budget at that time compounds the stress. However,

if you begin to teach kids to manage their money at a young age, it will help them plan for and even prepare them for these life changing phases and possibly reduce their stress. Setting up a budget with your kids demonstrates that your money is not unlimited and puts parameters on their wants. When they say: “I want this toy or can you buy me this item,” instead of saying yes or no, explain to them that. “We budget our money so that we have enough to buy the things that everyone in our house needs and wants.” Explain, for example, we have “X” amount set aside for toys for you. If

Page 18 • www.bouldercountykids.com

we buy this item, we will be over budget or only have a few dollars left to spend on other things you may want this month…so let’s decide together what is best. Their input is priceless and facilitates the success! This is a good time to talk about an allowance and/or ways they can earn money so they can begin to save for their next toy, electronic device, or sporting goods item. They will learn that everything costs money, and accumulating money takes more time than they thought. Develop a plan and write it down so you can refer to it with them later on. You can also offer to match their savings to encourage them to save and help it add up quicker. Once they save the money to purchase an item, please caution them not to simply deplete all of their savings. Managing finances (budgeting) as a young adult is more complex and can seem overwhelming at first. No doubt it will take time, effort, and discipline. Many people think, “I don’t make that much money so why should I budget?” or “I make so much money, why should I bud-

get?” But the truth is that it’s not how much you make it’s how you MANAGE YOUR MONEY that counts. Budgeting is extremely important to those on a low and limited income and it’s especially difficult for those who love to spend and have active social lives. Nearly ¾ of college freshmen surveyed remarked that they felt ill-prepared to handle their personal finances. In addition, many adults are overwhelmed when they are faced with utility bills, car insurance payments, buying household items and furniture, etc. for the first time. Developing a budget consists of establishing a plan that includes your financial goals (short, medium, and long-term), setting a timeline, and mapping out how to achieve these goals. Ascertain your monthly income. For most people, it is limited and approximately the same amount each month. Determine and write down your monthly expenses. To ensure that you include EVERYTHING, you can consider writing down each expense for a month…even a candy bar because it all adds up. Don’t forget to add in other expenses that may not be paid for in that month. Compare your income to your expenses to ensure that you will be spending less than you earn. Adjust your expenses if they exceed your income or don’t leave enough cushion each month. Some people choose to take on another job or work overtime to increase

income, while others may find it better to simply cut down on expenses. Tips for achieving your financial goals: Set realistic goals – trying to reach goals that are too high may cause discouragement and abandonment, and goals set too low can be uninspiring which can also be very disheartening. Paying Yourself First is key – regular savings add up, forms a habit that hopefully will be hard to break, pays handsome dividends, and provides the necessary funding to handle many of the unforeseen emergencies that always pop up instead of reverting to borrowing. Stop and think about YOUR financial goals – what REALLY means more to you. A latte everyday and going to the movies, or a down payment on a car. A latte may cost only $4, but every day, that’s $120 a month or $1,440

BOULDER County Kids HEALtH a year! If you took that money and set it aside into savings, you’d have a down payment for a car. Monitor and update your budget monthly – seeing progress is important and if things are not going well, it is better to make adjustments sooner than going down the wrong path for too long. Use one credit card for all your monthly purchases and pay it off EVERY month. This will help track EVERYTHING you spend and sorts your purchases by categories. You can review your monthly statements and determine where you could possibly trim expenses next month to help add more to your savings. In addition, it can limit your spending to what you can afford to pay off each month and it builds your credit. This can be completely free and earn Cash Back Rewards with a credit union credit card.

Discover unnecessary expenses that you could easily trim – cancel subscriptions that you rarely read or a gym membership that you no longer use. Ask your insurance rep, cell/telephone, and cable TV providers if there are ways to help reduce your monthly rates. You can avoid or reduce many credit card and bank fees if you join a credit union. In addition, you can typically lower your mortgage and auto loan payments through a refinance. These few “nips and tucks” can put $50 to $300 or more back into your pocket each month to help provide better cash flow and increase funding to YOUR savings. O b v i o u s l y, b u d g e t i n g is complex and takes time. H o w e v e r, m o s t p e o p l e who take the time reap the rewards. Don’t procrastinate. Every day you wait is missed opportunity. Share this article with your family and friends.

Avery’s Avid-Reader Corner Review by Avery Katz, age 17

Summary: SuperFreakonomics is the second book in a non-fiction trilogy exploring worldwide economic issues. Authored by Steven Levitt, an accomplished American economist and professor at the University of Chicago, alongside Stephen Dubner, a well- known New York City journalist, this masterpiece explores the complex world economy in ways unmatched by other books. The premise of the book is that we as Americans should look to the different problems around the world, and try to explain them through an economic lens. For instance, the book looks at issues ranging from crime in Chicago, to terrorism, and even at global warming. It then tries to explain the economic component which plays into each. That being said, the book is no stranger to controversy. At times, taking radical standpoints, the book is very mentally provocative. Whether the reader agrees with the standpoint of the authors or not, the reading certainly makes one think about money and the way it circulates around them. Another section of this book which received a great deal of praise was its final chapter on microeconomics (how individual behavior affects the distribution of resources in a society). Again, this section is very thought-provoking, and most will find it very enjoyable. What I Liked About the Book: Personally, I very much enjoy the controversial way that the authors approach this subject. The book is at times written to such an extreme that the reader will find themselves trying to prove or disprove the author. Whichever side you pick, it leaves you looking for and analyzing evidence, thus leading to a greater understanding of the economy. Further, I feel that this is a good read for children who may be new to the topic of economics. The book is written in a very casual and relatable tone for teenagers and thus they can take a great deal from it. Ages: As for reading level, I would say that the actual style of the book would be suitable for all readers 10 and up. However, the book approaches the study of economics by looking at what can be some troubling topics, such as crime, terrorism, etc. For this reason, I recommend that the book be primarily for tweens and up. However, the majority of younger audiences can certainly handle the book.

Does your child have a hard time focusing? This book is a great resource for activities to help children learn focusing and pay attention from infancy to teenage. The author gives a short, but amazing, explanation of attention deficit disorder in children and how it is not a hinder. She also goes over open vs. global attention and the necessity of each. The book is simply laid out into sections depending on age group. Within the sections are games. For each game, there is an explanation of the game, type of attention that is encouraged, materials needed (usually around the house or light budget things), directions, variations for the game, and what the child will be learning. The games are independent of each other so the reader and pick and choose and not feel the need to go in order. Easy to read and logical. How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber & Elaine Mazlish

This book is a great base for communicating with your child. There are certain parts that I recommend especially; those parts are the ones I will focus on here. The authors advise giving your child your full attention when she/ he talks to you and naming their feelings. I agree with these things whole-heartedly. They encourage acceptance of your child’s feelings and give clear dialogue examples to help put it into real life. When feelings are accepted and reflected, conversation and exploration is encouraged. An explanation of why some other forms of reflections are not ideal is provided as well. Choice-giving is a great alternative to punishment which is addressed briefly. There is also a helpful chapter on encouraging autonomy. Overall, I would recommend this book if you are finding yourself feeling stuck with communicating with your child. The Whole-Brain Child by Daniel Siegel M.D. and Tina Payne Bryson, PH.D.

This book focuses on twelve strategies to help integrate all parts of a child’s brain thus developing a healthy brain that is used to its fullest capacity benefiting them and everyone around them. This will help a child have more stability in their lives. It is easy to read with simple explanations and every day examples. Each

section discusses the hemispheres of the brain, the upper and lower portions, the whole self, and then how the whole self may connect with others by tying it all together. A strategy of how to help your child connect with that part of the brain being discussed is provided. For instance, a connect-andredirect strategy is provided to help the hemispheres connect or can be utilized when needing to connect with one of the hemispheres of the brain so the child feels heard and is able to communicate more fluidly. Another strategy is introduced to help a child calm down when upset involving acknowledgment (in right hemisphere). The authors’ examples and illustrations are realistic and feasible. The entire book is helpful no matter what you are experiencing with your child. I feel even if your child is pretty balanced, you will likely go away from reading this book having learned something new and practical that you can do immediately. Parenting From the Inside Out by Daniel J. Siegel, M.D., and Mary Hartzell, M.Ed.

This book is packed with a lot of information. Parts of the book are easy to read and follow, while other parts are more complex and take a bit more energy to consume. It starts off with how your own childhood experiences influence you as a parent. Memory and how the brain processes memories are explained. A part

BOULDER County Kids HEALtH that I especially enjoyed is the explanation how a person can have experiences and not have them in their awareness until something triggers the memory to the surface. When the memory is recalled, it can have influence on how the person responds in a situation. This can be done without the person even being aware of the influence (implicit memory). Becoming more aware of oneself, a parent can rewrite how they respond with their child so they can shift from a more automatic respond to a more present one. The authors explain this process in more detail and help a person explore themselves. Once a person is more aware of themselves, the parent can then help their child accept their feelings as well and can do this by reflecting feelings which is also addressed in more detail. The different attachment styles within a parent-child relationship and within adult relationships is explained which can be helpful to be aware of. Lastly, the healing process, ways of reflecting during loss, what happens during trauma, and repairing mishaps are all gone over in the end. So much information jam packed into one book! A person could pick and choose which chapters to read but it does seem helpful to read in order.
