Kids’ Planet... with Thorne Nature Experience Drawing by Kara Priest

Nature Preschools

E

by Dr. Oakleigh Thorne, II

arly childhood is a critical time to provide opportunities to spend time playing outdoors, building upon children’s inherent curiosity and love of nature. This is certainly the role of nature preschools. A growing body of research shows that frequent play in nature stimulates all of a child’s developmental domains. These include their cognitive, creative, physical, social/emotional, and spiritual development. We often referred to this as “wild play.” To put it simply: “kids grow better in nature.” In the past few decades, children’s access to frequent, unstructured time has become much less common. Influences such as overscheduled lives, parental and teacher fears, urbanization, standardized testing,

and technology (television, computer games, cellphones, etc.) have had a profound impact on the amount of time young children spend outdoors. Studies have shown that American children now spend almost eight hours each day with electronic media versus barely 30 minutes per week in unstructured outdoor play. The result is that many of today’s children suffer from what bestselling author Richard Louv calls “nature deficit disorder” in his book Last Child in the

Page 8 • www.bouldercountykids.com

Woods. This term describes the psychological, physical, and cognitive costs of human alienation from nature, particularly for children in their vulnerable developing years. In an attempt to reverse these trends, there is a growing movement happening in the world of early childhood education that is bringing a focus on nature into preschools. In this country and around the world, naturebased preschools and kindergartens are on the rise. A recent national survey shows the number of nature preschools operating in the USA is at an all-time high of more than 250. Sixty years ago, there were none. The professional association of nature-based early childhood educators, the Natural Start Alliance, defines nature preschools as ones that use nature as the organizing principle for their programs and that addresses both child development and the development of an “eco-

logical identity.” Nature preschools spend the majority of the school day outside and, as often as possible, integrate nature into the overall learning experience. One of the main purposes of a true nature preschool is to support the holistic development of young children and their relationship to the natural world. We feel that this is best supplied through joyful, hands-on, placebased, developmentallyappropriate experiences that nurture the whole child and foster an emotional connection to nature. The educational philosophy here is to provide an early childhood educational experience that initiates young children into a deep relationship with the natural world, thereby planting the seed for lifelong environmental stewardship. Daily immersion in nature with caring mentors, and with a focus on supporting early childhood development, fosters the

growth of the whole child. It is important for teachers to create a safe and caring learning environment that provides both structured routines as well as unstructured time to explore and play in nature. Since this year is Thorne Nature Experience’s 65th Anniversary, I would like to clearly state our core beliefs, which are (1) nature promotes the health and wellbeing of the whole child; (2) nature is the ideal venue for academic growth, imaginative play, social/emotional learning, and problem solving, all of which promote active play in general; (3) frequent, immersive experiences in nature, especially with a mentor present, cultivates a sound environmental ethic; (4) place-based environmental education connects children to their local community and is the starting point for responsible citizenship; and (5) today’s youth are tomor-

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS

row’s environmental stewards and leaders. This is why we do as we do!

Dr. Thorne is founder and honorary president of Thorne Nature Experience (formerly Thorne Ecological Institute), a nonprofit organization headquartered in Boulder. For 65 years they have helped “connect youth to nature!” For information about their programs, please check their website at www.thornenature.org or email info@thornenature.org or call (303) 499-3647, ext. 100.

WHAT DO I DO NOW, ROMONA?

Romona Scholder, M.A., RNCS Psychotherapist

Q

My 45-year-old daughter is having some issues with her kids. She has also had some issues with her own life and has all of a sudden gotten in to lots of self-help books. She has probably ordered six in the last month. Do self-help books really help? Is this a good thing? Signed, concerned father

A

Buying six self-help books in a month seems to signal some difficulties in your daughter’s life. The books are probably not going to cause any harm, except that they may be keeping her from getting the help she needs. The books allow her to feel like she’s doing something and so she feels better for awhile. But unless she actually changes her behavior and puts a process in motion, she will quickly slip back into her old way of being. It’s a temporary fix, at best. Then she buys another book. You could suggest that she look at the panel of behavioral health providers her insurance company offers to see if there’s someone she would like to consult. She need not make an immediate commitment, in fact she should wait and see how she feels about the therapist, but

real change can be made in therapy. A good therapist is not going to tell her what to do, but will help her decide on a course of action. Your daughter needs to hear herself think, which happens in the therapeutic setting.

Q

We often hear about children, or adults for that matter, that don’t communicate enough. Can you communicate too much? Is there a healthy balance? Signed, curious

A

This morning a word popped up on my favorite vocabulary website—logorrhea. It means uncontrollable talkativeness. Why do some people talk too much? A short answer is that it’s a defense mechanism, a defense against having to listen or perhaps to feel or to participate in a conversation. The word communication conveys the idea of conversation and conversation involves more than one person. There’s a rhythm to it. You say something and then I say something on the same subject. It’s surprising how many people don’t know how to converse. They might know how to monologue, to regale you with their ideas and stories, but conversation is a two-way street. A part of good conversation is silence. Having the ability to tolerate a bit of silence, not having to cram words into every available second and to enjoy just being with the other person without words makes for good conversation. As with most things, balance is the

key. If this person is your child, please teach them the art of good conversation.

Q

What makes serotonin levels drop? Is it genetic? My best friend says she has to take anti-depressants because she has such low serotonin production. Signed, good friend

A

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter in the brain along with dopamine and norepinephrine. They are responsible for the smooth operation of the synapses and for mood as well. Exercise, good nutrition, sunshine and plenty of sleep seem to keep the majority of people’s serotonin at a good functioning level. The role of genetics in serotonin deficiency is less well-established as we don’t understand the connection with depression completely. But hormones, poor diet and lack of sunshine contribute to serotonin deficiency, and yes, genetic factors as well. Depression can “run in families.” Your friend is probably taking an SSRI, a select serotonin reuptake inhibitor. This is a class of antidepressant that slows down the brain’s reuptake or destruction of serotonin, so there’s more available at any one time. Although it has been shown that if a person walks an hour a day, it fights depression as well as medication. But it’s hard to convince a depressed person to walk or exercise.

Q

We would like our family to be closer. Are there any activities that are good for families to do that can help us work better together and communicate more? Signed, concerned parents

A

When I was a child, my church had a saying, “The family that prays together, stays together.” I would like to add to that with, “The family that plays together, stays together.” I believe that shared interests from fishing to cooking to playing card games like bridge, eating together or any of a myriad of activities gives the family a chance to talk and share themselves with each other. I forgot the making and enjoyment of music is a lovely shared experience. Ask open- ended questions that can’t be answered with a simple yes or no and then really listen to the answer. This level of communication and conversation is facilitated by playful activities like going on a hike in the mountains. My sister-in-law talks about “making memories.” To this day, she arranges an annual vacation for the entire family, a dozen people, to cook and play together.

VAPING by Dr. Heather Isaacson, UCHealth

Doctor’s Advice To Parents About Vaping

C

olorado youth are vaping nicotine at twice the national average and at the highest rate of 37 states surveyed, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These devices are still fairly new, but the effects on the developing teen brain are alarming. Nicotine can cause lasting cognitive and behavioral impairment and issues with memory and attention. There can also be problems with the lungs including serious complications and noninfectious pneumonia. Recently, there have been several cases in Colorado and across the country of hospi-

talizations and even deaths from vaping, especially when combining e-cigarettes with marijuana. This investigation is ongoing. What parents need to know about vaping and e-cigarettes: • They have many names such as e-cigs, vape pens, JUUL, mods and pods. • E-cigarettes have many forms and can resemble pens, flash drives or combustible cigarettes. • The liquid may contain harmful chemicals and carcinogens. • They are often available in flavors that appeal to children and teens including

Page 14 • www.bouldercountykids.com

fruit, candy, peppermint and bubble gum. • The nicotine is addictive and harmful to the developing brain, and sometimes teens do not realize the solutions they are using contain nicotine – between 0-59mg/ ml. • Youth who use e-cigarettes are more likely to smoke traditional cigarettes in the future. • Although originally marketed for this purpose, e-cigarettes are not recommended as a way to quit smoking. • Teens and youth can purchase e-cigarettes online, even if they are under 18. The second-hand effects of vaping are still unknown, but the vapor is harmful to growing lungs. There has been an increase in calls to poison control centers over the past five years from children getting poisoned from e-cigarettes. A young child can be killed by a small amount of nicotine, less than a half a teaspoon. If parents are using these products, they should not vape in front of their kids

and the containers should be locked and out of reach of young children. What should you do if you find out your child is vaping? The first thing is to remain calm. You will not be able to communicate if you are upset. Try to have an open and honest conversation with your child about why he/she is vaping. Ask questions: Do you have your own device or are you sharing with friends? Do you use it every day and how much? Have you ever tried to stop? Talk to their pediatrician or family doctor to get some resources or have your child meet with their provider to discuss the health risks and how to get help with stopping. For more information, parents can visit the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Heather Isaacson is a pediatrician at UCHealth Pediatric Care Clinic and UCHealth Longs Peak Hospital in Longmont.

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH Teaching Empathy I wouldn’t want someone to slip on that!

STAY STRONG

by Tatum Oman LPC, RPT-S

DEFINING EMPATHY

Empathy can be witnessed in a person as young as 18 months old; however, true empathy does not usually develop until a child is 8 to 9 years old. Empathy is being able to put oneself in another’s shoes and feel what they are feeling. It is seeing a situation from the perspective of another person. If you have ever felt an emotion because someone else around you was feeling it said, “I know exactly how you feel.”, or feel as if someone understands what you were going through, then you have experienced empathy. An empathetic person will feel what the other person is feeling and either take action or help the person resolve the problem when possible. There are many benefits to being empathetic, and thankfully if a person is not naturally empathic, empathy can be learned.

BENEFITS OF BEING EMPATHIC

Being empathetic can be overwhelming for those people who are naturally very empathic and do not know how to regulate their emotions. The person may cry and feel like they do not want to be crying. Along with empathy, self-regulation can be learned. Being very empathic is a good quality so please do not try to change this about yourself or someone else! Being empathic

I encourage you to say what you need and don’t need and share your feelings.

can help build healthy positive relationships. When you put yourself in your child’s, sibling’s, or friend’s shoes it will not only help them to feel understood but it can help you to understand what they are needing as well. This quality can lower stress which is good for your overall well-being. This is also good because you must be calm to understand how another person is feeling. An empathetic person is present and aware of their surroundings which can be helpful in many ways.

HOW TO OBTAIN

While some people are naturally empathic, others lack or have little empathy. If someone you know lacks empathy, you can help them. If that someone is your child I recommend these steps. First, have them acknowledge or become aware of a person. Then have them notice what that person is doing. For example, saying “Your sister is crying because her bear was left at grandma’s house.” Then, help them realize what she is experiencing. Acknowledge the event. For example, “Your sister is

probably feeling how you felt when your friend had to cancel coming over to play the other day.” She feels sad. Then ask them, “Can you think of anything that could help your sister to feel better?” Brain storm with your child. It could be them saying, “I’m sorry you don’t have your bear.” They could offer one of their special stuffies to hold onto until their bear comes back home. Another approach would be asking what was it like when they were disappointed or sad the other day. Help them to really feel so they understand. When you empathize with your child, you can share your experience or story when they are needing normalizing so they do not feel alone in that feeling. Be mindful to quickly put the focus back onto your child and what can be done to help them. Having empathy for someone does not mean you rescue the person. Sometimes simply sitting with the person is all that is needed. It helps knowing that someone else acknowledges what you are going through. When you are in need of empathy and they are trying to rescue you,

It can be difficult at times to stay empathic when others around you lack empathy. Be empathic because it feels right. It can feel amazing to be there for someone else. By connecting with others in meaningful ways, you are helping your own stress levels go down, be present and form good relationships. When you observe your child showing empathy, encourage and praise them. When others are not showing empathy, show yourself empathy. Be your own friend and be kind to yourself. If you or someone you know is not naturally empathetic, be patient and acknowledge when growth occurs. As with anything, change takes time and effort. Imagine what it would be like to be surrounded with empathy. Be that empathy and more will come.

demanding, but he fights to make it home for dinner on time to afford his wife some relief from the evening childcare duties. The two of them often lament their disappointment with themselves when it comes to some aspects of childrearing; specifically, they find themselves too often doing things for their toddler that she really should do for herself, just to save time and energy. This became a real issue a few weeks ago when, to my dear friend’s dismay, her daughter noticed that at preschool, most of her peers already knew how to put their shoes on by themselves, while she was left waiting for an adult to assist her. My friend was beside herself with regret; she felt certain that this was because of her (and her husband’s) tendency to do everything for their little girl in order to get them all out the door in time. While this is a pretty benign example, my friend’s

experience demonstrates that doing basic tasks for our kids, regardless of our intention, is a hinderance to their development in the long run. And the modern struggle to provide kids with the appropriate level of guidance while nurturing their sense of individual responsibility is something of a hot topic in the news today. Commentators were criticizing the parents of Millennials and Generation Z for a decade, but the fervor has been substantially heightened recently with the report that certain members of the country’s most elite social class paid large sums of money in order to have their children admitted into toptier universities. These events sound so scandalous and so deeply contradict our idea of the American dream—to achieve success through honest hard work and nothing else—that it is easy to write the parents in question off as selfish cheaters looking for a quick and easy shortcut. But after digging a bit deeper, and

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH reading some of these parents’ testimonials, I think that the issue is a bit more nuanced than that. If we, as a society, perpetuate the idea that to be a successful parent is to protect your child from all harm and ensure their success via every avenue that is within your power, it seems pretty natural that parents would take whatever means necessary to get their kids into the best possible school. Sure, they may feel guilt from the awareness that their child’s success was not entirely warranted, but the guilt that parents shoulder so that their children can be one step closer to happiness is not something that any mother or father is unfamiliar with. When we talk about this scandal, I think it’s useful to separate the issue of cheating from the issue of overprotective parenting, because I do think that there is value in addressing them separately. Cheating is bad. It’s likely that we can all agree on that. But when did we decide that “good” parenting is equivalent to protecting our children from any sort of adversity? If we can expand our definition of “harm” or “adversity” to consider the long-term implications of overprotective parenting, it’s clear that solving all problems for your child is actually quite harmful to their overall resilience and preparedness for the real world. Psychologist Michael Ungar told Psychology Today, “It’s so sad. The point of parenting should be to grow a child who is capable of taking on adult tasks. I can fully understand coaching a child on how to fill in applications and how to deal with admissions officers. But doing that for the child is misguided and short-sighted. This is not a strategy for long-term wellbeing. It is always better to empower children to make good choices for themselves

rather than having them remain dependent on parents to sort out problems for them.” By robbing kids of the opportunity to do something wrong in pursuit of figuring out how to do it right, we effectively make it harder for them to grow up. This kind of parenting works against the nurturing of resilience in kids, and makes them less familiar with the adversity that they are guaranteed to eventually be forced to face. It’s not always easy or expedient, but it is essential to their health and wellbeing that we insist that kids do what they are capable of. Encourage them to tie their own shoes, brush their own teeth, care for their own pets and plants, and advocate for themselves when they are able. They will thank you someday.

TEEN CORNER Acne Help by Dr. Kimberly Slonaker

A

cne is caused by a combination of two big things:

1. The blackhead: Pores get blocked with oil, dead skin cells and bacteria (fun fact, the bacteria is called Propionibacterium acnes, which is where the name acne comes from). 2. The pimple: All that stuff breaks the pore open on the inside and causes inflammation. Acne treatment is all about prevention —there’s not much you can do once the pimple is already there. You have to stop things before it turns into a pimple. How do you do that? 4 Wash your face two or three times per day. In the morning and after school, wash with a gentle facial cleanser. Use your hands, and don’t scrub hard. At bedtime, use an over-the-counter acne face wash that contains benzoyl peroxide. This stuff bleaches fabric, which is why I like it at night—bleached sheets usually aren’t as big a deal as bleached clothes. If the benzoyl peroxide is too drying, you can start with a salicylic acid wash instead. These washes are great because they both kill the bacteria and exfoliate (help break up that stuff that accumulates in your pores). 4 Keep pores clear. Cosmetics that clog your pores also worsen acne. If you insist on using make-up, stick to something that is oil-free and water-based and says “noncomedogenic” on the package. 4 Other factors. Many teens with acne have a firstdegree relative who also had acne, so there appears to be a genetic link. I get a lot of questions about diet. There is no reliable evidence that eating chocolate is related to acne. However, there are studies suggesting that high glycemic load diets (high carb foods) could increase your risk. Stress also has been shown to contribute to the development of acne, so remember to take time to decompress during high stress periods like exams. 4 Give this at least four weeks to work. Remember— you are trying to prevent new pimples, not fix old ones. If you don’t see a significant improvement, talk to your doctor about adding prescription-strength agents.

s parents, we are wired to protect our children. We want to meet their needs, sooth them when they are in pain, and ease their lives to whatever extent possible. It becomes difficult to know when and how to let them step into increasing independence from us as they grow. Yet, we want them to have an interdependent relationship with us and be prepared for the eventuality of us not being there.

3. Be alert and flex-

can take to help our children healthfully grow up, individuate and eventually live their own best lives? Wouldn’t it be nice if they can move from being dependent on us to having an interdependent relationship with us? Even though the step-bystep books may not always work for every parent-childcircumstance combination, guidelines can be very helpful. I offer you these guidelines for easing the letting go process:

1.

Take care of your basic human needs. Start with physical, then emotional, then social, then mental and finally spiritual needs. It is easy to be distracted with the newest fad or the loudest squeaky wheel, but without taking care of your basic human needs, you won’t be healthy and resourced enough to make sound decisions.

ible. Each child is different. Circumstances change. Needs, abilities, temperament, and resources vary over time. So, in each moment, you will be served to feel into your children’s, your own, your family’s and your community’s physical, emotional, mental, psychological and spiritual state, all while being aware of your larger context and goals. This may require you to change expectations and reprioritize. It will definitely provide you with information about the actuality of what is going on with your children rather than what you would think should be going on with them.

4.

Honor your children and family. Celebrate progress, successes, togetherness, development, and growth.

5.

As your children grow, give them increasing responsibilities that match their specific developmental stage and the knowledge you have of who they actually are. Celebrate their successes. Allow them to learn from their mistakes without shame, by being a resource as they explore how to. It is best to let them learn how to handle “mistakes” when the stakes are not as high, in that way

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH they have a felt sense of how to make “good” choices and handle mistakes. Be happy when they succeed, and also when they feel dignity and joy by moving past a mistake. This will give them the message that you trust them, and that you are there for them no matter what. When we take care of our basic human needs and tap into our resources, we are in turn resourced and consequently able to be alert and flexible. With alertness and flexibility comes less stress and the capacity to make sound and thoughtful decisions. And as we regularly recognize all the wonderful qualities of our children and our family, it becomes easier to trust our children and give them increased responsibilities in a way that builds a foundation of trust, peace and respect with our children. With the repeated practice of

all these guidelines, we will eventually bear the fruits of our labor as our relationship with our children morphs from a loving dependency to a loving interdependency. If you have questions or comments, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to reach out.
