ur cover artist is Teodor Cariov who is a fun, goofy 11-year-old kid who likes sports, animals, food, sleeping, hanging out with friends, road trips and visiting other countries. Teodor likes sports because it clears his mind and it’s fun. When he plays soccer, he likes the challenge of facing the other team, and scoring goals makes him happy. He also likes to bike all around Boulder by himself. Teo enjoys running fast and competing in races. His fastest 5K time was 20:16, and he competes in triathlons and was in the top 10 triathletes in the nation two years in a row! Teo loves animals. He has two dogs, a cat and a rat. He also has a very annoying but sweet seven-year-old sister, Sia, who he likes to wrestle, run around, laugh and play ball with. Teodor loves, loves, loves food! His favorites are his dad’s filet mignon and his mom’s oven baked salmon. When eating out, Teodor prefers Lark-burger, Zanmai Sushi and almond lattes from Ozo. Teodor loves traveling. His latest favorite book is 39 Clue. He is interested in language and architecture. His next destination is Israel, where his favorite grandpa lives. He also enjoys painting at Sunflower Kids Art Studio. On this cover he painted a Chelsea soccer player (one of his favorite teams). He is psyched to be on the cover of this magazine for the second time. (Fall 2010 was his first cover). he cover sponsor is Boulder Valley Credit Union, which provides kids an excellent environment in which to save money and provides incentives, activities, events and mascot visits. hen I was a boy, I was lucky to grow up “in the country” far away from “the big city.” We lived on sixty acres of woods and meadows with a stream and even a lake. We even had a large garden, and I had an area of it that was mine to grow whatever I wanted. From a very young age, I had freedom to roam. I was always outside. Sometimes I would be looking for a bird’s nest and figuring out what kind of bird had built it. I’d have to wait patiently until the bird returned, then try to identify it in my bird book. Other times I would find a toad, a turtle, or a butterfly on a pretty flower. On rainy days I would play in the mud, watch how the water flowed, and make pebble dams to change the flow. In one way or another, I was usually in contact with nature. I indeed had the freedom to explore my surroundings.

What about kids today? Do they have the kind of freedom that I had? I’m afraid that many of them don’t. We have many parks and open spaces, but often the rules are that both kids and adults must always stay on the trails or paths. They are not allowed to build secret “forts”, like I used to do in our woods. They are not allowed to climb trees or build tree houses. Suburban kids might have a backyard,

Page 8 • Bouldercountykids.com

but urban kids may only have cement sidewalks and streets outside their apartment…no place to explore nature or to have a garden. It doesn’t have to be that way. We can design areas where children can play freely and discover things about nature, what David Hawkins, the famous educator, called “messing about with science.” That’s exactly what I was doing when I built my pebble dams. There’s an organization called Wild Zones that builds these sorts of areas where kids are able to explore and have direct contact with nature. Public parks and open spaces can zone some areas as “protected” and others where children are allowed “free play” to explore without being afraid of breaking some rule. In a recent article, I talked about “biophilic design,” where developers bring nature into their plans on

purpose, especially when they are redesigning an urban area that might have become blighted, run-down, or deserted. An old vacant lot can become a community garden, where neighbors can come together and get to know each other while working cooperatively to grow fruits and vegetables that they can harvest for their families. This certainly is a kind of “nature contact.” On a larger scale, there are some famous parks that have preserved nature for a big city. Central Park in New York City is one of these. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, whose son, F r e d e r i c k J r. , c a m e t o Boulder in 1910 and created a plan to have greenbelts around the city and along Boulder Creek. It was over 50 years later that this report was republished and used for publicity to help pass the sales tax for the city to buy open spaces. We m u s t c o n s c i o u s l y see the importance of having places where children have the freedom to roam. Planners and public citizens need always to remember this! Dr. Thorne is founder and honorary president of Thorne Nature Experience (formerly Thorne Ecological Institute) in Boulder. They have helped “connect youth to nature” for 59 years. For information about their classes for kids, please check www.thornenature.org or e-mail info@thornenature.org or call (303) 499-3647.

he Wildlife Animal Sanctuary (TWAS) is a thing of beauty. A diamond in the rough, if you will. This place is a rescue habitat for abused and mistreated large carnivores. This category includes

so they can get the correct attention and help they need. These animals are extremely well taken care of and are from all corners of the earth. I highly recommend a visit to anyone who wants to have a good time. Everyone can go and see these animals from the raised walkway (accessed by a ramp) and enjoy the beauty of these animals. The staff is very friendly and willing to answer any of your questions. Grab your camera, a picnic, and your family and friends and go to the sanctuary to enjoy an evening of watching animals with a beautiful mountain sunset in the background.

WAS is a growing large animal rescue just outside of Denver. They specialize in creating large acreage enclosures (most are 10+ acres) that allow many animals to be placed with their fellow beasts. They rescue these animals from terrible conditions, each one has a story, and many have traveled from distant parts of the world. The park is not your ordinary zoo. They have created a wide, continuous elevated viewing boardwalk, from which you can view the animals’ habitats. It is easily accessible to young, old, and the physically challenged. From the boardwalk, you look across and down at the animals, viewing them playing while also enjoying an outstanding view of the mountains and beautiful sunsets. The staff and large volunteer force is very helpful in answering questions and providing the detailed story for each and every animal. You will be impressed by their knowledge and their enthusiasm in caring for these animals. I would recommend that you pick a pleasant day, pack a dinner picnic, take

SAMANTHA

I

LOVED THE BEARS! My personal favorites were the baby bears. There were two of them, brother and sister. They played king of the branch, and they were adorable. They are the kind of adorable that makes girls go awwwww in a really loud and high-pitched manner. I couldn’t stop myself from doing it. After watching the little bears, I watched two bears that were like mama bear and kid bear. The “momma bear” (I don’t even know if it was a girl), chased the “kid bear” into a cave-like structure and did it over and over again, she even sat down in front of the structure! My mom and I joked that the “kid bear” didn’t clean his room and couldn’t come out and play until the room was clean. All in all, remember to bring your camera to take pictures of all these adorable animals.

TONI

I

really enjoyed visiting TWAS. Here are my mom-to-mom tips: Go early in the day or late in the day, so you can see the animals when they are being fed and most likely are up and active. This is recommended for anytime you are going to see animals. We especially enjoyed watching the bears playing while we were there. Check the website before you go for tips. The staff is so helpful, you may even want to call to get their tips on when to visit and whether the concessions are open or if you should pack your own meal or snacks. We arrived around 4 pm on a Saturday and got to see the animals being fed. We learned that the tigers are getting a new water

habitat that is guaranteed to be fun to watch, get the tips on when is best to see them at play. It is a 50-minute drive from Longmont. I felt the drive went very quickly, because we passed through 3 small towns along highway 52 and in the blink of an eye, we were there. Visiting TWAS is different from visiting the zoo, because there are fewer types of animals, and you view them from an overhead walkway. This is less threatening to the animals, and they seem much happier in this animalbehavior conscientious environment. But remember in the parking lot not to walk up to the bears or wolves in the adjacent habitat, or you will be asked to stop. Apparently, it is very aggressive to look animals in the eye at the same level and TWAS doesn’t want the animals to feel threatened in their forever home.

Be sure to pack your stroller or wagon to transport the kids. The walkway can get breezy, so be sure to pack jackets appropriate for the weather, and if the forecast says good weather, I would still stick in a jacket just in case. I tend to run cold, so it was nice to have my jacket when the sun went under the clouds and the breeze turned cold quickly. Whether you go on a family outing, participate in a playgroup or mother’s group field trip, or organize your own visit, it will be well worth the effort and a great learning experience for the whole family. Who knew that Colorado had such a wonderful place for abused and neglected exotic animals to be rescued.

Protect Your Credit Cards from Unauthorized Scanning

and-free pickpocketing is a new way for thieves to get your money. With electronic readers selling for as little as $30 on the Internet, personal data could be stolen from your smart-chip credit card by thieves who do not even have to touch or swipe your card. The rate of identity theftrelated fraud continues to rise. A recent study* revealed that identity theft affected more than 11.6 million adults in 2011 (a 13% increase from 2010). Experts concur that this trend will continue. ID theft happens to victims in many ways and, most of the time, before the victim even knows it. Among countless types of scams, ID theft can occur from a phone scam, a deceiving e-mail, and now simply by walking down the street, in airports, train stations, restaurants, or in a shopping mall via RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) readers. The RFID microchip technology was available as early as 1969. RFID chips are encoded with information and were developed to allow for quick electronic transmission of information over relatively short distances. Refinements in RFID technology over the years have made it possible for RFID chips to be embedded into items ranging from concert and ski lifts tickets, to credit cards and passports, as well as toll road transponders. For example, RFIDencoded tickets allow operators to get customers through lines more quickly and effi-

I’ll just put that on my credit card!

ciently. RFID chip transmissions have helped businesses streamline the process of tracking inventory, shipping companies to track parcels in route to the point of delivery, airlines to minimize the incidents of lost baggage, and the list goes on. In recent years, cleaver thieves have been known to place their own magnetic stripe readers into gas pumps and other POS readers to try to capture the cardholder’s private information as they swipe. The RFID technology-enabled credit cards, also known as “smart” or “contactless payment” cards, are beginning to replace the familiar magnetic strip, so

Page 14 • Bouldercountykids.com

cardholders can simply hold or wave their cards in front of a reader/sensor (known as PayPass) instead of swiping it to process the transaction.

Regrettably, RFID chips also have significant disadvantages along with their many advantages. Activists believe that the RFID chip within credit cards represent a noteworthy security risk to their users. Why? Unfortunately, high-tech thieves have discovered ways

of using this technology to steal consumer information and to commit identity theft, even when a credit card is still in a wallet or purse. This has prompted many cardholders to question the safety/ security of their cards containing an RFID chip. The embedded RFID microchip can be read from up to 30 feet away, which poses the possibility that high-tech identity thieves, who have RFID card readers, can capture the cardholder’s personal data relatively easily— simply by walking or standing nearby, without actually handling the card. The reader then transfers the data to the thief’s laptop computer. “So far, there’s no proof that RFID skimming has been used in identity theft” reports the Identity Theft Resource Center. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it hasn’t happened—in many cases, it’s impossible to know how a particular victim’s information was stolen. In addition, RFID isn’t a wide-open door for crooks. The reader devices cannot glean Personal Identification Numbers (PIN) or CVV codes, those three digits on the backs of cards (or four digits on the front of American Express cards). In newer smart-chip plastic, the cardholder’s name is also unreadable this way. And without that information, counterfeit cards can’t be produced or online purchases made. The primary danger comes if you carry a single card that

pulverized. This will destroy the information that has been saved/stored on the RFID chip.

Tips and Caution:

Running magnets over RFID chips and/or submerging them in water will not erase/affect them. Although you can destroy RFID chips in the microwave after a few seconds, it is not advised. RFID chips may burst into flames under the extreme heat. contains an older RFID chip —it can send out a clear signal to an illicit reader device. However, if you have a wallet full of plastic, multiple transmissions can be jumbled and unintelligible to the scammer. The good news is that you can easily protect yourself for a few dollars. Since metal effectively blocks the radio waves, just place smart-chip cards in RFID-protective card sleeves, which can be purchased online. Or cut two pieces of cardboard the size of a credit card and wrap each with aluminum foil, suggests the Better Business Bureau. Then place the chipcontaining card(s) between the foil-wrapped pieces to block unauthorized RFID scanning and data transmission. How do you know if there is an RFID embedded in your credit card? If you see the words Pay Pass TM and/or the RFID symbol on your credit card, then your credit card contains the RFID microchip. How to destroy the chip, the transmission ability, and any data it contains from cards you are no longer using? First, cut the small, black microchip from the connected antenna. This will end the chip’s transmission to the tracker, but will not destroy the chip itself. Take a hammer and smash the small, black chip. Repeat until the chip is completely

ello, my name is Isabella Martinez. Summer is here, bringing a whole new environment and more activities with it. Birds chirp high up in the treetops, as aromas of delicate and fresh smells surround us. The summer is a wonderful time to be outside and involved with the environment. It is also nice to become health conscience and be motivated to live a healthy lifestyle. Farming and being outside is the perfect way to feel your best during the summer months, while also having fun. In this article, I will describe exactly what it is like to live healthy and what it precisely means to be a farmer. In Boulder, there are many places where farming can be done. A few places are The Community Gardens throughout Boulder and Longmont and of course your own yard! I interviewed

a real organic farmer, Connor Murphy, who lives and works right here in Boulder. He works at Growing Gardens and leads and teaches me and many other teens to farm during the hot summer months. I asked his advice on farming and some important things to know. “I am a solar-powered creature and work long hours in the summer and short hours in the winter, he says. Connor explains that farming involves dedication and a lot of hard work. “When you are outside in a farming environment, you are part of the earth. It is also important to be able to problem solve and be able to fix problems right on the spot says Connor. I asked Connor why he decided to become a farmer. “I got an apprenticeship at

Grant Family Farms in 2008. I learned many skills and developed a passion for hard work as well as the tangible results that careful planning can produce. Personally I have committed a lot of time and work in the gardens throughout the summer and have had the same sense of passion as Connor. I wake up early a couple times a week to tend to the gardens with others. It takes a long time, but, by the end of the summer, the gardens are brimming with fresh veggies. It feels so rewarding that I can contribute to this beauty. We also had a chance to talk about seasonal changes in the garden and what is needed to support all the crops. Each season brings something different for the

garden. During the summer, most of the hard work is done, like the weeding and taking care of the plants. When August and September come around, we harvest many of the plants grown during the summer and plant others. During fall, the soil is prepared for the winter and things that can grow during this time are tended to. In spring, the soil is prepared for more planting. Some other factors are very important to have a healthy garden. These things include lady bugs and honeybees. The bees work to pollinate, while the lady bugs eat bugs that eat the plants. Watering the plants in the morning is also extremely important, because otherwise the sun can take all the water into the air, leaving the plants with none. Overall, being a farmer involves having a lot of fun while also working very hard. It contributes to staying healthy while being outside and promotes eating good food. I greatly recommend taking up farming.

The Power of Faith

by Jessica Dancingheart

A

s humans, we all need something bigger than ourselves to believe in, in order to find happiness and peace. The things we believe in vary from science, the power of loving kindness, the Buddha, Christ, Mohammed, anthroposophy, God, the rising of the sun, the fact that our cars work to get us where we want to go. Without faith, our lives can be very chaotic. Children naturally have faith when their needs are taken care of. I worked with a young boy who was struggling with the addiction issues that go on in his home. As you can imagine, the boy was riddled with guilt, shame, worry. He was carrying the stresses of an adult, while having very few tools and life experiences to handle them. He spent much time trying to figure out how to bring happiness to his hurting parents, at a cost to his well-being and the developmentally appropriate activities of a 9-year-old. His is not an uncommon story. In most US households, there is at least one addict who suffers from one or more of many addiction issues— eating disorders, gambling, or the use of addictive substances, such as legal and illegal drugs and alcohol. Usually, the addicts take up

much of the energy that one would hope would be directed to the children. So, like many children in households with untreated addiction, this young boy was left to fend for his own needs more than one would hope a 9-year-old would have to. As I worked with the boy, we talked about his worries and how they expressed themselves. He had tummy pains. He would put off his feelings while tending to those of his parents. Instead of playing like all the other kids, he worried and spent much time alone, thinking of ways to help the mommy and daddy he so dearly loves. He lost his support structure and turned to himself to give comfort and strength to his parents. Clearly, he was over his head and being hurt by a disease that was far bigger than he could handle alone. We talked about how the addiction of his parent was a disease, and how he could help himself as his parents helped themselves—in daily life between his sessions with me and with support groups. So, I began to explore with this boy what he believed in that gave him comfort and joy. He talked about play-

ing ball, petting his puppy, climbing trees. As he did so, I could see his face brighten. His faith in those things was tangible for him—more so than science or abstract religious thoughts. So, I encouraged him to create a little box with pictures of puppies and baseballs and trees. I suggested that every time he was worried about anything —parents, school, friends— that he write down on a sheet of paper what worried him and put it into the box. I also suggested that he replace his concerns with activities that gave him joy. Over time, I watched the boy go back to being a 9-year-old. He would so excitedly report to me how putting his worries in the box

worked. He was becoming happier and found hope in something bigger than himself.

BOULDER County Kids Summer Lovin’

by Sue Van Raes

hh, summertime….. The long luscious days of sun, and the liberating evenings of playing outside, bike riding, and enjoying the evening breeze from your porch. Summertime is the most expansive of all the seasons, lending itself to feelings of freedom, connection, and heartful play. BBQs, picnics, neighborhood parties, and, of course, endless summer camps, camping trips, and travels. Come the end of May, it always seems to me like just the right medicine for the soul. With the expansiveness at full throttle, how can we still maintain a balance of the deep nourishment, home base, and the family meal to keep us touched in and connected to those we love and those we seek to nourish and find nourishment with? As always, with busy schedules and a lot of fun and play, we feel the pressure of time and what to make for dinner. One of the beauties of summer is the simplicity of food we eat. Meals are usually lighter, fresher, and easier to make. Picking a fresh salad from the garden and cooking a piece of Colorado trout on the grill makes for an easy meal. Biking with the family down to the local farmers market and finding fresh greens, local cheeses, and even a special bottle of Colorado wine (for Mom and Dad) can inspire a simple yet

keep the spirit of the family alive through nourishing each other from the inside out!

localicious meal. Remember, it’s not only what we serve around the table, but it is who we share the table with, that counts. Try these few summer family mealtime tricks to make your summer nourishing for body, mind, and family!

1.

Create dinner summertime mealtime rituals. Connect to the natural rhythms of the season and sync us back up with ourselves, and each other. So often when we are busy, we forget to sit down with our food and take respite. We eat in the car, standing over the counter, or, heaven forbid, not at all. This summer, make your mealtime magical by setting a special outdoor table, inviting the friends and family over, and taking time to give thanks for the abundance of the good fresh local food we have to share.

food preparation of seasonal meals engages them in the mealtime ritual while giving you a little help in the garden or kitchen.

3.

Learn the art of adding pleasure and play back into the family meal. Summer, the season of fun and play, opens us up to an inner spark of joy and happiness. Enjoy fun conversation, joke telling, or sharing highs and lows of the day over dinner, to increase family connection.

4.

Most of all, enjoy the season of the heart, the season of abundance and freedom. Many of us feel love and give love through food. Find your summer lovin’ at the dinner table and

WHAT DO I DO NOW, ROMONA? Romona Scholder, M.A., RNCS Psychotherapist

Q

. My best friend is really messy. She doesn’t pick up her room and just plain seems lazy about keeping things in order. It is her room, and she can keep it the way she wants it. But, when I am invited to her room or I have to get her for something and make any kind of comment, she says I am OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). I know I like to have things in order but where is the line on OCD? Signed best friend.

A

. Must your bed be made before you leave the house or the dishes done before you go to bed? How anxious are you when these things are impossible to accomplish. This is not obsessive compulsive disorder, but it can give you an idea of the discomfort that someone with true OCD experiences. The tasks that these folks must complete to stave off extreme anxiety are all-encompassing and life crippling. They are often obsessed with cleanliness, washing their hands twenty or thirty times a day, sometimes more. We think of them as germ phobic and aware of

“contamination,” for example, after being touched by a child’s sticky little hands. An encounter like that can set off an episode of clothes washing, car decontamination, multiple showers, washing out the washer with bleach and on and on. No, it doesn’t sound like you have OCD. You’re more of a neatnik. Someone with OCD can have their lives brought to a halt by a need to reestablish control over their surroundings. But that’s what its about for a neatnik as well. We like to have our surroundings under control and established patterns of behavior, like always hanging our clothes in the closet instead of dropping them on the floor, help us maintain that. Life outside our homes is often uncontrollable and that order in our homes is a healthy response.

Q

. Does drinking enough water have anything to do with good mental health? Curious father.

A

. The study of brain physiology and chemistry and its effects on mental health and functioning is very much in the forefront of research today. Have you noticed all the books recently published about our brains and how they work? We are also learning more about how to protect our brains and to promote mental acuity and

Page 22 • Bouldercountykids.com

efficiency for as long as possible in our lives. Remember the last time you were thirsty, really thirsty? You probably had difficulty with focusing or solving a math problem or even remembering what you were supposed to do next. Adequate consumption of water can help to solve that. A well-hydrated brain is a better functioning brain, and a better functioning brain can provide a better foundation for better mental health. Dehydration in the elderly is well known and causes many visits to the ER. Dehydration in younger people has effects that are subtler but no less debilitating. We are lucky to live in a society where access to water is so easy and water is one of the reasons our brains function well.

Q

. Our youngest seems to be perfectly happy all by herself. Our other two children are very outgoing and social. She doesn’t seem troubled but just more into her own world. Should I be worried about this? Signed concerned mother of a 10-year-old.

A

. Yo u r d a u g h t e r sound like a welladjusted introvert. This can look like a problem to the extroverts in the family. The state of simultaneously being alone and happy is hard to imagine for social and outgoing people

like your other children and perhaps you as well. We have a tendency at any age to feel sorry for folks who live alone or travel alone or spend time in their rooms alone. It’s thought that they are somehow deprived or at least dejected. In truth it’s a well-kept secret that the ability to be alone and enjoy one’s own company is part of the foundation for good mental health. If our happiness depends on the presence of others and constant relatedness in the form of Facebook, texting, or Twitter, we are vulnerable to eventual disappointment. Have you heard of people taking a vacation from social media to get back in touch with themselves again? Your daughter needs to be able to be social and outgoing as well as being by herself, somewhere in the middle, moderation in all things. But no, I don’t think she has a problem

Avery’s Avid-Reader Corner Review by Avery Katz, age 15

Summary: The novel, We, takes place in the 26th century, after what is only known to the reader as “The 200 Year War,

which eliminates all but a small fraction of the world population. What remains of the human race is sealed up by constructing a city covered by a powerful glass dome. The city is ruled by The Benefactor under a corrupt governmental system. The citizens are known by numbers, with the males indicated by a consonant (D-503, R-13) and the females by vowels (O-90, I-330). Though extremely oppressed by the government, the society within the book, also known as One State, is said to be “like one organism and that each person is only a working cell to continue the growth and production of One State. The word happiness is no longer a personal expression of the self, but a term meaning whether a decision is logical. As one could see, this is not necessarily a society that all would enjoy, especially not O-90, a female in the book, who, with all the oppression around her begins to consider a rebellion as a means of destroying the corrupt government. The only question is can her rebellion be successful enough to free the people and restore order?

What I liked About the Book: One of my favorite things about this book is that it was written in response to the author’s personal experiences during the Russian revolution of 1905, the Russian revolution of 1917, his life in the Newcastle suburb of Jesmond, and his work in the Tyne shipyards during the First World War. This gives the author firsthand experiences of rebellion, which makes his depiction much more real to the reader.

Ready, Set, Play! by Betty Quiqley

J

u m p ropes—

check. Bubbles — check. Sidewalk chalk—check. Dress-up clothes and plenty of great books—check! Summer is coming, and it is time to gear up for the hours, days, and weeks of sunshine and fun time. I bet some of you are thinking, wondering, and deciding on the best plan for your child this summer. According to new research on brain development and some old well-known facts, one of the best things you can plan this summer is plenty of time for PLAY! In an article written by ASTRA (American Specialty Toy Retailers Association). “playing is everything -fun, yes, but also vital for their growth. It’s how they explore the world and learn to do stuff: crawl, talk, walk, build, sing, draw, and make friends.” According to Child Action, Inc., it is “through play, that children try new skills, explore their imagina-

tion and creativity, and develop relationships with other people in their lives.” Play is important! There are many ways that you can support your child at play. Be a play partner! Children learn social skills by modeling your behavior, and they love it when you are a little silly or playful. Turn a meal into a picnic, call a fruit drink “bug juice” wear a paper sun hat, step into a chalk drawing, tap into your

Page 24 • Bouldercountykids.com

fun side, and you have done your job. It is important to really value play and play activities. Increase your knowledge of the stages of play and engage your children in experiences that are appropriate and exciting. Ensure that your children are safe while playing. Establish a positive environment and create an inviting physical space. It is also important to provide classic, multipurpose toys and materials. An excellent pile of loose parts, boxes, tape, and scissors, combined with a good story and who knows what dragon, knight, super hero, fairy, or spy might show up in your backyard? Let imagination and ingenuity lead the way. Adding a few adventures to the schedule will certainly increase the possibilities for delightful play experiences when you return. A trip to the water park or pool one

day and a backyard sprinkler playdate the next is sure to delight. A summer visit to zoo might inspire hours of creating a bug view zoo or wooden block and “wild” animal safari on your patio. Microwave: For a messy microwave, put one-half cup of

white vinegar and one-half cup of water in a microwave-safe bowl. Place the bowl in the microwave and heat the solution until it boils. Once everything has cooled, remove the bowl and wipe down the interior with a cleaning rag dipped in the contents of the bowl. Easy peasy.

Sink: Baking soda is a wonderful scouring powder.

Sprinkle some over a wet sink basin, wait for a few minutes, scrub down with a wet rag or sponge. To clean and deodorize the drain, pour one cup baking soda and one cup white vinegar into the drain. Let this mixture sit for fifteen minutes. Listen for a hissing sound and you know the acidic vinegar is reacting with the baking soda. Careful with these two items, they have a strong reaction and can burn you. You don’t want to inhale any of this. The two products together can help loosen grease and clogs. Follow with a kettle full of boiling water down the drain and finish up by shining the faucet with a spritz of your vinegar and water solution. z

Showerheads: To clean up showerheads, fill a small plas-

tic bag with one-half cup baking soda and one-half cup vinegar. Use a rubber band or tie to attach the solution-filled bag to the shower head, (so that the nozzle is covered with the solution). Wait about fifteen to thirty minutes, then remove the bag. Scrub with an old toothbrush or scouring brush if needed to dislodge any stubborn deposits, and then run the water.

with half white vinegar and half water and use as a spray cleaner. Test on a small area of any surface before use, as you would with any cleaning product. Do not use vinegar on marble, and use with caution on finished wood surfaces and tile, as the acid can etch the surfaces.

National Parks

N

by Walter Katz

ow is the time to plan your trip to one of our national parks. We are only a one-day drive to some of the most spectacular nature in the world and some of the most spectacular lodges in the world. The wonders of Old Faithful L o d g e i n Ye l l o w s t o n e , El Tovar at the rim of the Grand Canyon, and the Awanee Lodge in Yosemite are incredible destinations. And each of these parks have other lodging as well in addition to a wide range of camping possibilities. The national parks do not take reservations for more than one year in advance. The secret is to plan for the next year, and one year and a day before you want to be at the park, call or go online and make your reservations. Alaska offers a wide range of family-friendly vacations. Many people combine an overland trip to Denali National Park with a cruise along the inland waterway. We shy away from the big cruise boat scene and combined a five-day cruise on the Prince William Sound on a small cruise ship, which

only had 100 passengers. We sailed through fjords narrow channels and we were close enough to glaciers and icebergs to touch them. We saw a feeding humpback, stopped and just hung out watching for an hour. We went near streams and watched brown bears chomping down on salmon. The wildlife was very close and amazingly plentiful. The cruise spent one day in Cordova. We hiked to Sherman Glacier, got in some rafts, hunted ice worms, and then did a thrilling white water rafting trip. After the cruise we rented a car and drove the length of the Kenai Peninsula and stayed in Homer for four days. We had access to a gas grill and cooked and ate fresh halibut, salmon, king crab, and my favorite, halibut cheeks. We then took the Alaskan Railroad to Denali. Denali is a difficult park to really experience. The standard two-night stay included in the cruise packages

Page 28 • Bouldercountykids.com

allows an uncomfortable bus ride through the park. We stayed four nights, did the bus tour, the jet boat ride, and the flight over, around and through the south and north peaks of Mt. McKinley. This is one of the sight-seeing highlights of my life. I have met several people who have had this experience, and we all agree it is the ultimate. Alaskans are proud of their state and how they cope with the harsh conditions. Every venue has their own special way of telling you about them and Alaska. We met Bob the Oysterman on our cruise. He told us about how he harvesting oysters. Joe the fur trapper told us which of the animals he trapped were edible and which were tasty and which were not. And then there were the corny jokes at the Alaska night in Denali. We r e n t e d a c a r i n Fairbanks and drove about an hour to the Chenin Hot Springs. Do visit the Ice Museum, and parents, do try

their Appletini served in a martini glass make of solid ice. The overnight flight back to Denver was on the night of the lunar eclipse. Those on the left side of the plane saw the Northern Lights, those on the right side saw the lunar eclipse, so if you are leaving Alaska in late August, you might want to reserve your seats in advance. Here are some phone numbers and websites for making your reservations. Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon, Grand Canyon, Yellowstone can be reached at (303) 600-3400. Canyon de Chelly at (800) 679-2473, and Yosemite at (801) 559-4884. A general website for everyone is at: www.nps.gov/ or you can go to our website at www.bouldercountykids. com for a complete link page of the lodges. Just go to our home page, Summer 2013 issue contents and click on this article.
