From the Publishers: Boulder has always been a close community to us; we both grew up in the Denver area and Isabella graduated from CU Boulder in 2019. But once we dove into Boulder County Kids and the entire community, we fell deeply in love. This is a place like no other, and we are so excited to now officially be a part of it. There is so much to look forward to: sunnier days, vaccinations & social gatherings, ice cream in the afternoons, and more that we hope will make this a better summer than the last. If you haven’t already, please follow us on social media! We are making big waves in the social world, and it is becoming a bigger community everyday. We are immensely thankful to Jennifer for her kindness and trust in us—we will take good care of your baby, Jenn! Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions, concerns, or even just to chat.

After 27 years, I have decided to retire and will be passing the baton onto two absolutely fabulous women which will bring a new energy and vitality to Boulder County Kids. It has been a lovely journey for me working with a couple of generations of children, and I thank all the communities that have helped make this paper so special.

ur colorful cover is by 9-year-old artist, Paige Geagan. As a third grader whose favorite class in school is art, Paige has exhibited her advanced skills in working with acrylic paints at Sunflower Art Studio, which is what she used in creating “Captain Llama.” She, her older sister, their parents, and the family’s fluffy Siberian cat Lola, moved to Boulder from Ohio in 2019. Paige loves donuts (the kind with strawberry icing and sprinkles), The Huckleberry Restaurant in Louisville, the movie Mrs. Doubtfire, the TV series Modern Family, and the funny song I’m a Chicken Taco on Skis, which she often sings along with her friends. Regarding instruments, Paige says that sometimes her tutor teaches her the ukulele. When she grows up, Paige wants to own a llama farm or be a cartoonist—she’s not opposed to the idea of doing both. What she most looks forward to about summer is the warm weather as she loves playing football in the backyard with her dad. Congratulations to Paige on being our front cover artist!

BOULDER COUNT Y KIDS Summer-Themed Desserts for Kids

RECIPES Easy as Cherry Pie by Annie Gieser

This is a super easy, crowdpleasing cherry pie that is perfect for summer. I always use frozen cherries so that I can make this any time of year, but fresh cherries work great, too. (Hack to easily pit cherries: use an empty glass bottle and a metal straw, pushing the pit of the cherry into the bottle with the straw). If you decide to use fresh cherries, use a little less cornstarch—the filling won’t have as much liquid and won’t need to thicken more. Once I started pre-heating the filling on this recipe, I never went back. Cooking the filling before baking makes the cherries a lot softer and the filling a lot thicker. You do not want to overcook it though; the filling should be sturdy, but not like jam. I also use a dutch crumble top; this is a fan-favorite for my regular pie-eaters and is super easy. A classic pie crust or braided top tastes delicious, too. Do whichever you prefer! Ingredients Crust & Dutch Crumble Top: 1 pie crust 1 cup of flour 1/3 cup of sugar 1/3 cup light brown sugar 1/2 cup of cold butter, cubed Filling: 5 cups frozen (or fresh, pitted) cherries 2/3 cup sugar 3 tablespoons cornstarch (less if using fresh cherries—1 1/2 -2 tablespoons) Sprinkle of salt 1.5 tablespoon lemon juice 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional) 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed Instructions: Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Combine cherries, cornstarch, sugar, salt, vanilla & almond extract, and lemon juice in a large

pot over medium to high heat. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly until mixture starts to thicken (it will take a little bit, ~8-10 minutes. If the mixture does not thicken after 10 minutes, add a dash more of cornstarch). Once it hits boiling, reduce temperature to low and cook, stirring for another 2 minutes. Remove from heat and transfer to a heatproof bowl to cool to room temperature. While this cools, make Dutch crumble. Combine all Dutch crumble ingredients (make sure butter is COLD) in a medium bowl using a large fork or pastry cutter. Blend together until a crumble forms. Push pie crust into a pie pan, pinching the edges and pushing down on the bottom and sides to make sure there are no big air bubbles. Poke with a fork all over—this will help stop the pie from overfilling in the oven. Once filling has cooled to room temperature, pour into the pie shell and place cubes of butter on top. Then cover the filling evenly with Dutch crumble top. Bake for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake for another 45-50 minutes. Cool for 2 hours before serving alongside some vanilla ice cream or melted dark chocolate. Cherry image by @Pixabay

This is the Instant Pot we use! Click for link! Ingredients: 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 1 teaspoon garlic, minced 1 1/2 lbs chicken breasts 3 cups chicken broth 1 can black beans 1 can pinto beans 1 can corn 1 15 oz can tomato sauce 1 cup salsa 1 packet taco seasoning 1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional) Shredded cheese (optional) Sour cream for topping (optional) Chopped green onion for topping Instructions: Turn your Instant Pot on the saute’ mode and add the olive oil and onion. Saute’ the onion for 2-3 minutes or until tender. Add garlic and cook for one more minute. Pour in the chicken broth, stirring with a wooden spoon to deglaze the bottom of the pot. Turn off your Instant Pot. Add the chicken breasts, beans, corn, tomato sauce, salsa, and taco seasoning packet. Stir it up! Place lid on Instant Pot and set pressure valve to “sealing”. Turn the Instant Pot on “manual” or “pressure cook” (whatever option yours has) and set to cook on high pressure for 20 minutes. Quick release the pressure. (IF LIQUID STARTS TO COME FROM THE VALVE, SEAL, WAIT 5 MINUTES, AND THEN RELEASE PRESSURE) Use two forks to shred the chicken and stir the soup well. Serve immediately with chips, cheese, and sour cream. When I make this recipe, I like to substitute plain Greek yogurt for the sour cream as a healthier alternative. Veggies image by @_ladyzay_

Science and Research

Drawing by Kara Priest

by Dr. Oakleigh Thorne, II

A

s a b oy, I w as always interested in how things worked. This led me to a strong interest in science. Thanks to a couple of my teacher/ mentors, I finally became determined to conduct a research project and get my Ph.D. (which stands for Doctor of Philosophy) in biology (which is the study of living things). So that’s how I became a scientist. Science is always asking questions and trying to discover the true facts about something. For example, from a young age I was interested in different kinds of birds and how they behaved. I would spend hours looking for their nests, watching how they flew, seeing what they ate, or what sounds they were making. Have you ever seen a Robin pulling a worm out of the ground? I would watch them tilt their heads as they listened for the sound of the worm moving in the soil. They could actually hear that sound! I was really beginning to do my own research about birds! Scientists are always checking their own facts as well as those discovered by other scientists. In this way, they keep trying to reach the truth about something

by checking and testing the facts. A good scientist, therefore, is always trying to correct bad science! When I first started to prepare to do research for my doctorate at the University of Colorado, I decided that I wanted to do an animal behavior study. My professor suggested that an animal that would be good for me to use was the White-footed Mouse (or Deer Mouse). They were easy to find and capture in the wild around the Boulder area. If I could catch a pair or two, they were easy to breed in captivity, so I would soon have as many individual mice as I needed for my research. The Biology Department where I was working had a battery of 60 individual small cages stacked in a special rack on wheels with 30 cages on each side. Each cage pulled out like a drawer. Each had a special bottle and tube that supplied water for an animal to drink. It was suggested that I supply dog chow checkers and whole barley for food as well as a paper towel and an empty tuna can in which a mouse could build a nest by shredding the paper towel with its sharp incisor (front) teeth. I soon had 60 mice in their individual cages, ready to study. But what should I study? I noticed that indeed the mice eventually shredded the paper towel and used the pieces to construct nests in the round tin tuna cans. What made them shred? Did they shred more at cold temperatures than at warmer ones. What about the quality of their nest building?

Page 14 • www.bouldercountykids.com

White-Footed Mouse Since these mice are more active at night, did they shred more in the dark than in the light? I realized that finding the answers should be my research project! I then built a large structure out of plywood that looked like a shipping case with two big doors into which I could roll the battery of 60 cages and close the doors. It had lights, a heater, and a compressor (for cooling) inside so I could control the temperature (warm or cold) and light (bright or dark). I tested the mice for 24-hour periods, each time giving them one new paper towel to shred (or not). Sure enough, they shredded much more in the cold temperature and in the dark and made better nests than in the warm temperature and in the light. I was excited with these results!

This is just one example of research. I hope you grow up liking science and wanting to do research, as I did. Remember that the world always needs good scientists!

Suggested Resources: Resources to offer help: 1. Send equipment to health care workers. Go online to use www.mask-match.com to send spare N95 masks and surgical masks to individual health care workers, or you can also use www.GetUsPPE.org to see what health care centers in your community need and how to donate. 2. Guide on taking care of disabled and immuno-compromised friends: Notes on equitable care from a chronically ill person. 3. Learn to disrupt racism: This is a skill we all need to have all the time, and developing it now will help address the rising rate of hate crimes against Asian communities we’re seeing in response to the coronavirus. 4. How to make masks, hand sanitizer: Several clear, step-by-step, practical guides at www.CDC.gov. 5. Donate to relief funds: Millions have been hit with joblessness, with vulnerable communities often receiving the hardest hit or being excluded from stimulus efforts. There are countless ways to contribute—like the linked fund to provide rent relief to undocumented communities in Seattle, this Twitter thread of queer/trans artists in the gig economy, or the One Fair Wage relief fund for tipped and service industry workers, a fund to which MoveOn members have already donated more than $100,000. 6. Consider creating your own mutual aid network: Here’s a great guide to getting started, with more resources linked, and join the Mutual Aid Slack Network for more resources and community. Have a COVID-19 question? At www.covid19.fas.org you can ask a scientist. BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH

WHAT DO I DO NOW,

Romona Scholder, M.A., RNCS Psychotherapist

Q:

With vaccines rolling out and being so crucial to going back to normal, how do I explain antivaccinators to my kids, gracefully? Signed Concerned Parent.

A:

I’m reminded of the story of a 3-year-old child who asked his pregnant mom if there was a baby in her stomach. She was dreading the questions she expected to follow when the child leaned forward and yelled, “Hello in there!” before continuing with his play. The level of explanation depends on the child’s age, both mentally and chronologically. The best course of action appears to be to answer the child’s question and nothing more. A younger child just needs to be told that “Not everyone needs to agree on everything.,” or “People don’t always agree on things.,” or “Different people have different opinions.” It’s an opportunity to teach tolerance of another person’s point of view. “We don’t have to agree on everything to be friends.” Older children can be given a more nuanced response. “Some people are afraid vaccines might hurt you, but from what I’ve read, that isn’t true.” Honesty is important, but full disclosure is not always in the child’s best interest.

ROMONA?

Q:

Should I hide my emotions and fear about the Boulder shooting from my child? What do I say to explain my fear to a young person?

A:

Signed Scared Mom.

My Mom used to line up chairs in front of the biggest window in our farm house when I was young, so that we could watch the storm and the lightning and listen to the thunder. “The angels are bowling!” Years later I realized that she was terrified of storms and didn’t want to infect us with her fear. You must keep the full extent of your emotional reaction to the shooting toned down for your children. Try to minimize the presence of photographs and news stories in their environment. Questions from children under 6-yearsof-age should be answered simply with one sentence answers. Older children’s questions should initially be answered with the question, “What do you think about it?” or “What have you heard?” It will give you information about their readiness to hear some of the basic facts around the tragedy. Share your feelings of sadness but be careful with your words. Simple phrases like “The world is falling apart.” are a bad idea as a child will hear you literally and become even more fearful. Encourage them to talk with you and tell you about what they’ve heard and what they think. This will be a topic of discussion with their friends at school and may even be talked about in the classroom. You could ask them about what is being said by others. Shore up the feelings of security and safety in their lives even if you are worried about the world falling apart.

Page 22 • www.bouldercountykids.com

Q:

With talk of the vaccine and everything opening up soon, my 7-year-old is showing signs of anxiety about going back to school. How do I approach this? Is this normal for kids this young? Signed 39-year-old Father.

A:

Anxiety in children is prevalent at this time for exactly the reason you’ve identified. Your 7-year-old just spent a seventh of her life at home with you, not being confronted with the social demands of the outside world. The anxiety of returning to school can be complicated by additional, sometimes unconscious, fears. I know of a couple whose marriage is in trouble and their small son knows that his presence often keeps Mom and Dad from rash actions. He worries that his returning to school might allow them to end their marriage, something he really doesn’t want. Even if he’s not conscious of these feelings, they are there anyway. This is an example of the many other reasons a child might be reluctant to return to the classroom. This past year has been disruptive for most people but perhaps the most affected are the children. In their short lives, this disruption has been major. The realization that life can change on a moment’s notice, that they had to stay home and wear masks and not see Grandma or Grandpa or play with their friends because of a virus, will leave an imprint on their world view and personality in good ways and bad. I would be anxious too.

Taylor’s Blog Healing

by Taylor Cannon

B

oulder County is hurting right now. I’d guess that most of us will remember the date of Monday, March 22, 2021, for many years to come. The horror of the events of that day reverberated across a nation that has already been plagued for years by high rates of gun violence, and our community will be grieving for a long time to come. And at the same time, as vaccinations begin to roll out and the American economy starts to open back up again, many of us are still processing the difficulties inflicted upon us by a year-long global pandemic. Students spent many months at home, isolated from their peers and heavily dependent upon their parents’ help and support for their education. Relationships crumbled under the pandemic pressures and single people were plagued by seemingly endless loneliness. American adults reported an overwhelming increase in adverse mental health conditions. The grief, anxiety, boredom and general intense stress of this time drove many of us to depend on drugs and alcohol at alarming rates. We’re all pretty bruised up and feeling vulnerable, even as the immediacy of these threats has waned. Although

the degrees to which we’ve been impacted by the King Soopers shooting or the pandemic most certainly vary, our families are all processing changes to our environments and our mindsets as a result of these historical events. And meanwhile, our children’s consciousness and view of the world is being shaped throughout it all. So how can we heal our families and show our kids what resilience looks like? The primary method of recovering from any level of a traumatic event or experience is, in my mind, to pull together with your neighbors, family and friends. There’s a good reason we feel the bonds in our communities strengthen after times of difficulty; we need to con-

Page 24 • www.bouldercountykids.com

nect in order to support one another and overcome stressors. Particularly in the wake of the COVID pandemic, it’s important to nourish our relationships and fend off isolation. Until it’s safe to gather in person again, setting up habitual routines to virtually check in with your loved ones and your fellow community members on a regular basis can keep everyone’s spirits afloat. We all need to feel seen and heard and cared for, and the feeling you get from giving that to someone else is just as nutritive. We can also gently encourage recovery through a conscious and consistent effort to look for the good in the world. Seek out opportunities to be optimistic, and make them known to your families

when they arise. While we don’t want to embody a sort of forced regardless of context, it’s important to question our thoughts when we routinely find them to be making critical, negative or unkind assumptions. This kind of thinking does usually stem from feelings of fear, but it also stimulates anxiety, creating a vicious cycle. Look for acts of kindness of every day people and you will find them! And the more you see the good, the better your subconscious will become at finding it without much effort. And if all else fails, get the family out of the house to enjoy nature, fresh air and a little exercise. Evidence suggests that even a short period of time outdoors can calm

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH the nervous system and boost your mood. As the weather warms up and opportunities to enjoy nature become more frequent, take full advantage of all that this beautiful part of the country has to offer its residents. Camping, fishing and hiking are all great bonding activities for young families and can offer a muchneeded distraction from a stressful present. In times like these, taking care of your family doesn’t necessitate neglecting your own mental health. Make time to find small ways each day to show your children how self-compassion and resilience works; healing doesn’t happen without conscious, purposeful choices. Even if we’re still socially distanced, we are indeed still all in this together.

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH Creating Family Time to Share Self-Pride by Jessica Dancingheart

T

o help our children have physical, social, emotional, mental, creative, and spiritual health, we must provide our kids the foundations of good physical care while tending to their social-emotional needs. A tool for tending to social-emotional needs is to create the time and environment for family shares on self-pride. In the last year, I began to ask my clients and students to adapt the vital practice of gratitude by turning it inward. I have asked them to share what they are proud of with attentive people. The results have been excellent. The feedback is that this simple self-pride sharing exercise strengthens bonds and is clarifying and empowering when shared in emotionally nurturing social environments. Self-pride expression clarifies our values, the qualities we enjoy in ourselves and the people around us, and our meaningful, purposeful, and fulfilling activities. It is a very vulnerable process. Therefore, it is best to treat it as one by offering our complete undivided and non-judgmental attention to the person sharing what they are proud of and by willingly sharing what we are proud of with the people who are being vulnerable with us. To create a safe and suitable environment for vulnerable sharing, we do not want

to interrupt, comment, judge, advise, distract ourselves with other activities, gossip, story-tell, compare, or oneup. By not interrupting, commenting, judging, or counseling, we are stating that we trust the person who is sharing to know their truth. By staying off our devices and not engaging in other activities while listening, we are saying, “I value you!” By not gossiping, comparing, oneupping, and story-telling, we are saying, “I respect you and myself, and honor that we have our unique paths.” I want to add a note on judgment. Societally, we tend to think of judgment as a “negative” commentary on what somebody says or does. It can also come from cheering and applauding. To contribute to a non-judgmental environment, we can listen deeply, and if we feel compelled to comment, we can

Page 26 • www.bouldercountykids.com

do so by sharing our feelings. For example, instead of saying, “You are fantastic,” you may want to say, “I feel happy when I hear you talk about your accomplishment. I value seeing people master their goals. I enjoy watching you celebrate your efforts and am happy to celebrate them with you.” Now that I have talked about what a nurturing environment is for sharing expressions of self-pride, I want to talk about the importance of not only being proud of accomplishments and accumulations but celebrating qualities, relationships, awareness, etc. In a society where we are constantly measured for what we have accomplished and accumulated, we can easily go on the roller-coaster ride of external motivation—shifting with the tide of finding our value depending on our setting.

If we cheer ourselves on by sharing the innate qualities and the accomplishments we are proud of, we get to know and honor ourselves and feel more grounded and centered no matter who we are surrounded by. I suggest that during mealtimes, you make the time to have each member of your family, including yourself, share what they are proud of as everybody else gives complete and undivided attention. I would love to know how the practice goes for you. Please feel free to reach out and tell me.

Life Skills as Goals! by Tatum Oman, LPC, RTP-S

L

ife skill goals for children can help them now as well as the future. Goals could include learning how to be present, creating things from what is available on hand, learning how to cook/bake, learning how to garden, learning how to fish or learning how to do basic car maintenance. Sometimes when making a goal it can be too broad and without a lot of direction. Be sure and make clear goals that are measurable and easily identified when obtained. Having specific written life skills can help with more focus and motivation to those specific goals.

ABOUT THAT GOAL

Setting a goal can be a joint effort with you and your child or individually for your child. When appropriate, I encourage you to share that goal with your child to instill confidence, ownership of the goal, and their cooperation in helping them to succeed. They may get excited that you want to help them learn something new or conquer something. If the goal

mals, your surroundings, and looking at clouds. Then, each can share what they heard and experienced in detail.

CREATING WITH AVAILABILITY

is something of contention, it may not be helpful to share as it could place more pressure on your child. We want to set your child up for success so if they think of a large goal this is ok, however, it may require small goals within the larger goal so it feels obtainable. Write the goal out and put it somewhere that can be seen daily for encouragement. If it is a larger goal with smaller ones within it, post the smaller goals as well and check them off as they are conquered! Acknowledge all steps that are made. The reward for accomplishing a goal is that amazing feeling of empowerment and success.

A Few Life Skills... BEING PRESENT

Page 28 • www.bouldercountykids.com

Being present to me means without electronics, social media, music or even books. It is being where you are and not thinking about the past or future. There are no thoughts of where am I going next or what was missed out on or regrets of yesterday. There are no thoughts of anything besides what is going on right in that moment and needing nothing more than what they have. This is also a time without conflict. When teaching how to be more present, it can be helpful to go through the senses. Some examples include laying outside on the ground looking at the clouds and image searching, watching and listening to moving water, watching any movement without judgment, listening to birds chirping, lying in a hammock and soaking up sunshine, coloring, meditating or doing yoga. It may be needed to start with a moment being present and build to 5-10 minutes up to an hour and beyond. An objective goal for becoming more present could be spending 10 minutes outside as a family listening to the ani-

Being able to create things with what is available can be useful to many things in life. This skill is about flexibility and adaptability. Taking a box and making a shield, helmet, or bus. Making an obstacle course in their backyard. Taking inventory of what craft items are available and what can be created with those things, natural items and recycling. Utilizing what was to be recycled and creating something new is an amazing skill. With assistance, looking at what is available to make a flowerpot holder, bird box or foot stool. There can be great value in learning how to line things up, putting them together while taking into consideration what the object is being made for. If it is a bird box, what type birds live around the house? What size would be needed or how tall would a foot stool need to be to be comfortable? How does it need to be constructed to be sturdy and safe

BOULDER COUNTY KIDS HEALTH for use? Building also takes patience and mindfulness of safety with the tools as well. An objective goal for this life skill could be creating something new from resources that is useful to a person without asking to buy anything.

LEARNING HOW TO COOK/BAKE

Cooking and baking can be regulating activities. There are different ways of cooking and baking, some including recipes and measuring while others are more the feel, taste and altering. There is value in either method. There can be many things learned when cooking and baking. For instance, at times it is necessary to change the bake time or recipe if baking at higher altitude. This reinforces the skill of flexibility. If the recipe was followed strictly then it may not bake correctly. This can be especially helpful for rule followers to learn. Cooking and baking can also help teach time management. This process can also teach when ingredients are bad, if they are missing and the effects, and how to know if the food is cooked thorough-

ly. These lessons are priceless. An objective goal for learning how to cook/bake could be cooking a complete healthy meal that adheres to your family’s dietary needs. I hope you and your family enjoy the process of acknowledging, focusing on and accomplishing some life skills. It can help to have a goal written out so not to be forgotten about. The time and energy utilized on the present self and future self will be well spent with no regrets!

Summertime

Horoscopes taurus APRIL 20 - MAY 20 Those born under the sign Taurus are practical and well-grounded. They make great long-term friends and are always there for the people that they love. Family is very important to a Taurus, they are happiest surrounded by loved ones while enjoying a home cooked meal and laughing until their stomachs hurt! This summer, Taurus should spend some time in a garden, and maybe even use what they grow to help cook for their family!

leo

Gemini MAY 21 - JUNE 20

cancer JUNE 21 - JULY 22

Geminis are very curious people who love new experiences. They can be sociable and always ready for fun, but also can get thoughtful and serious at times. Geminis love making new friends and learning new skills. Geminis should dedicate this summer to learning how to play a new instrument or sport! Try something new that you have always been curious about.

Cancers are known to be sensitive and sympathetic people. They are very loyal beings and usually make decisions based on their heart, over their mind. Cancers are lovers, not fighters, and usually avoid conflict at all cost. This summer should be filled with arts and crafts for Cancers! Try painting or drawing a nature scene and giving it to a loved one as a surprise gift.

JULY 23 - AUGUST 22 Those born under the sign Leo are confident, creative, natural leaders. Leos are very warm-hearted and love to have a lot of fun. A Leo’s animal is a Lion, which makes them naturally brave, sometimes even fearless, creatures. Take to center stage this summer, Leos! Join an acting class or even just act out plays at home for your family. With your courageousness, acting will likely come naturally.
