REVITALIZATION INDUSTRY ZONE BRATISLAVA pre-master thesis 2017 / 2018 team - monika bočková, barbora lichtmanová, kristína machajová miroslava mišurová, martin oravec

Industrial area in Bratislava that was once on the outskirts of the city is now part of the broader city center. The site is built-up with various services, but with no coordination or public functions. Main uses of the paved surfaces are parking and storage. Although the „mess“ has its atmosphere, nobody stays in the area longer than they need to. The people visiting or residing are mostly workers, car mechanics and manufacturers. Recently, some old buildings have been transformed into studios and offices.

We aimed that our project could be potentially used as a form of guidance for the developent wave that we expect to hit this area in the near__future. This gentrification wave could be recklessly executed with the tabula rasa principle, where most of these industrial objects would be demolished.

want we don’t that. Since we like the atmosphere and appreciate the industrial mark on the city, we used a simple “fill out and enrich” principle. We created new transit and public _areas and new buildings filling up empty spaces. But

artery

The site has an old rail network which we reused to serve as the main of revitalisation. This artery connects the most interesting characteristics of the industrial era which we then further developed as our individual master theses.

I created two different urban qualities in form of two public spaces. The first in a form of a piazza opens up spatially and invites visitors deeper into the zone.

Second space is formed to become a pedestrian street, tighly stretching between old industrial halls and new solids. Offering different set of functions in the spirit of London’s Camden, where the young and the old meet.

TECH COMPANY HEADQUARTERS BRATISLAVA master thesis 2018 next stage of the revitalization of a former industrial area

supervisor - ĹĄtefan polakoviÄ? (studio gutgut)

This project is the next stage of the previous industry zone revitalization. I focused further on the newly created piazza. The headquarters of a technological company will preserve the industrial atmopshere, but also offer more additional functions such as museum, workshop for students and apartments. By placing buildings along the plot edges, I created a square with an old crane in the middle that serves as a historical relic. Adding more functions that just plain office space, I aim to keep the piazza alive and full of people also apart from the standard working hours. Clearly defined paths that cross under the crane and continue further to the zone, promote exploration of the newly revitalized area.

PARAMETRIC MASTERPLANNING

ETHIOPIA

academic project 2016 / 2017 team - jeanne dentin, maria diego, martin oravec bauhaus university weimar + EiABC addis ababa supervisor - sven schneider, abdulmalik abdulmawla (InfAR chair)

contribution Concept developed together as a team. In coding part I covered the land analysis, town shape and street network. Also covered the graphical output (except for the visualisation) and the photos from Ethiopia.

Parametric masterplanning was chosen as the best way to approach Ethiopian’s ongoing issue of a need for new small towns which will serve as regional centres in rural areas. With this exchange of rural living for a more urban style doesn’t mean only new buildings and infrastructure but also a whole different way of living. Therefore the change has to be done gently and always keeping in mind what is today essential for Ethiopian people. With parametric masterplanning we can produce different versions of needed cities by imputing data about morphological parameters and the program will generate possible solutions. This project was a 2 part process: • designing a city from scratch theoretically • putting our theories and methods to the test with scripting them in Grasshopper.

With the Syn City 2.0 studio I realized the importance of participation. The most valuable information how to properly design is given to us by the people.

Giving people chance to express themselves and to influence the design process is essential since they know the site deep thorugh and will be the ones living in the new enviroment.

The concept of the project is still developed by us, planners not the computers. A balance has to be kept between human thinking and automatization.

We tested the script on 3 sites in different regions of Ethiopia and as a results we got 3 different masterplans, but all of them following the rules set in the script.

CENTRAL MARKETPLACE REGION CENTRES

DISTRICT PRIMARY ROADS

Central marketplace is an important element in the Ethiopian town, where markets

take place several times a week. We analyse the area within our city boundary and find optimal points which serve as region centres. That way we can spread the most important functions not only in the one central point, but also in the centre of districts. These centres are connected by primary roads. Daily important functions can then be found in a small walkability radius from centres in the districts. The goverment building, cultural center, health center and other important functions naturally stay in the main central point.

housing / mixed use

These functions fill the rest of the remaining plots, commercial mostly being on the primary streets.

important functions

These buildings are added first on the most accessible plots. Similar functions are placed further from each other.

regions

For distributing important functions throughout the city, it is divided into regions always with the centre square - node.

secondary streets

Secondary street network is done by dividing existing big blocks into smaller ones.

primary streets

Primary street network is created by connecting the nodes.

region centres

With our chosen centre point, the script chooses placement of smaller centres nodes.

main road

Identifying the existing main road to select the needed city area around it.

angle of slope

Using slope analysis to find optimal flatland area.

INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS Blocks at the outskirts, chosen by the wind. In each district there are also workshops.

RELIGIOUS BUILDINGS Three temples placed close around the middle node, but with a distance between each other.

PUBLIC FUNCTIONS All the other functions like hospital, administration, sports. Each region filled with various functions.

HOUSING Housing buildings are placed on the more quiet secondary streets. They create a semi - closed green atrium in the middle of the block.

COMMERCIAL / MIXED USE Placed on the primary streets with 2 - 3 floors, first floor being commercial, upper housing.

EDUCATIONAL BUILDINGS Schools and kindergartens equally distributed, green space always part of the plot.

ISLANDS IN THE STREAM RIGA international summer school multi-disciplinary formation of urban environment 2017 team - imane boutanzit, undÄŤne ÄŁemze, jackie herrera, carlotta di iesu, madara marcinkus, johan oosterlinck, martin oravec, kai saillart, jackob schmitt riga technical university supervisor - naime esra akin (istanbul kultur university)

contribution I proposed the concept of interventions instead of a standard output of a detailed masterplan + some graphics.

System of water areas, over a long period being evolved by both human and natural forces, is one of the cornerstones of the distinct spatial structure of Riga, the capital of the Baltic state Latvia. River Daugava as the main water area with a direct access to sea affect the city development and its spatial structure. Daugava, being wide and not-easy-to-cross waterbody till the recent decades has been more dividing than connecting element of the city. The purpose of this summer school, was to examine different ways of using water areas to connect different areas of the city. Four case study areas with lecturers and students from all over Europe ensure the richness of ideas brought to the table. This fact was for me the main asset of this project.
