‘Engage’ London 2012 Newsletter

Engage Local news for the Athletes’ Village boundary September 2011 / Issue 3

Welcome Welcome to the final issue of ‘Engage’. On 27 July 2011 the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) celebrated the completion of the Olympic Park ‘big build’. We have now handed over most of the major venues to the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). We would like to thank you for all your advice, patience, interest and support over the last five years. We do recognise the impact our works have had on you as our closest neighbours. The ODA will now be passing the baton to LOCOG, who will continue to engage with you as they prepare to stage the Games in 2012. LOCOG’s preparations for the Games are well underway and they will be communicating with you more regularly. In the autumn you will receive a newsletter from LOCOG called ‘In your area’.

A lot of work still needs to be carried out on and around the Olympic Park and Athletes’ Village site, including on Drapers Field. From 1 October 2011, LOCOG will also fund and manage the 24-hour Construction Hotline, on which the ODA has answered 6,000 calls since May 2007.

Construction Hotline 08000 722 110

Please call the free Construction Hotline for more information on the construction programme or if you have any questions or concerns.

The Olympic Park Engagement Network (OPEN), which brings together community representatives from around the Olympic Park, is being hosted by the ODA for the last time in September 2011. The Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) will take on OPEN and ensure members continue to be involved in the development of the Park through to the Games, and beyond.

to all 450 schools in the five Host Boroughs. As a legacy of our work with young people, we have launched ODA education resources focused on the construction of the Olympic Park.

Dates of meetings, as well as details of works in your area, will still be available on the community webpage: www.london2012.com/community.

We have very much enjoyed working with you and wish you all the best for the future.

The ODA Education Programme has also concluded, having offered opportunities

These are now available to schools nationwide via the Get Set website: www.london2012.com/getset.

Public meetings to tell residents about work on and around the Olympic Park will be managed by partner organisations. The ODA will attend, as and when required. The next Chandos Community Centre meeting will be on 5 October 2011. Invitations will be send out in advance.

Local residents and schoolchildren joined us at the Aquatics Centre to watch Tom Daley perform the first dive. The Aquatics Centre was the last of the six main Olympic Park venues to be finished.

Google Campaign The advert is a minimalistic campaign based in London; it advertises the Google Voice Search feature. The posters use phonetics so that people read it in their head to get the English word. The typeface used is sans-serif, this shows that the product advertised is futuristic and new technology, it’s blue to stand out – the typeface is quite a big size so that it’s noticeable amongst the surroundings as people will be travelling around the signs at quite a fast pace. The advert is then followed by the Google logo and the app icon, which is a microphone symbol, the text on the advert is a concise description on the app – it is easily read. The background is white so that it stands out in the busy city environment and so that it can be read in less than 3 seconds.

London 2012 Paralympic Games Brochure This brochure was published by The London Olympic Games Official Committee (LOCOG) shortly after Britain won the bid to host the 2012 Paralympic Games. The brochure has been developed against strict corporate guidelines which include the typeface for the Paralympic values and the standard typeface. This spread is the contents page for the brochure and is very minimalistic whilst having ample information about the core values. The majority of the page is consumed by an image of a disabled athlete swimming the 100 metres, you can see in the background of the image other athletes – some have no arms or no legs. This is accompanied by the text: ‘motivate’, the motive behind the image. The image is split by the actual table of contents which gives it a professional feel.

BBC Radio Logos The BBC Radio logos recently underwent a redesign so that they had a standard appearance. They boast the use of figure ground organisation with the number of the radio station, for example in the BBC Radio 4 logo you can see an apostrophe which indicates the station is primarily a talk-radio station – the same happens for BBC Radio 3 where there is a musical symbol which indicates it plays classical music. Each logo has a uniform: ‘BBC Radio’, this standardizes all of the radio stations and allows people to easily identify that its part of the BBC. The logos are each a different colour as it is another way of distinguishing between the radio station and somewhat represents the station style.

BBC Sherlock DVD Cover The Sherlock DVD Cover has a few more regulations than the other print products; for instance it has to have the official BBFC rating displayed clearly on the front and back cover. The BBC logo is clearly on all sides of the cover as well as the production company. The front cover consists of the programme title and the fact that it’s a series of programmes – this is preceded by the starring actors of the production. The image in the background is dark and mysterious; it has photos of people in the sky that leaves people wandering who they are and the relevance of them. Sherlock and Dr Watson is walking straight into the eye line of the audience, making eye contact, complimented by pieces of text appearing to fly through the air as a thought process of Sherlock. The background has a variety of characters from the programme around the outside of a synopsis followed by any extra features as a selling point for the DVD. Technical information about the DVD format is displayed above the BBFC rating and description as well as any copyright information in the bottom left hand corner. The typefaces on the cover are display-block or sans-serif.

Vodafone Business Ad The family of print adverts are based around the idea of business teambuilding, promoting the Vodafone One Net business products. The series of adverts depicts people on a teambuilding day with complicated trust exercises, these are strenuous for all of the people in the picture and everybody looks bored, scared or tired. There is a pathetic fallacy in that it is raining which reflects the mood of the people in the image. These adverts are used in newspaper adverts, on billboards and on their website. The logo and tagline was in a red block in the top right corner, this is important as it puts the message across clearer than if it was on the left hand side. The image focal point is on the left hand side which is when the audience is supposed to think about how horrible that situation is – especially if they’ve been on a teambuilding exercise. The logo doesn’t have ‘Vodafone’ directly underneath as it is in the text: “There is a better way to build your business. It’s called Vodafone One Net.” Power to you – the way that this is worded makes the businessperson says that they have more power than they has now – power is control. This is particularly effective as it shows both a problem and the solution, Vodafone is the solution.
