Music Weekends 2012/2013 Taunton & Newcastle A music weekend arranged by Martin Randall Music Management is a very special experience. There is the pleasure, first, of hearing music performed by artists of the highest calibre, who are all among the very best in their fields. Many come from mainland Europe as well as the UK. Second, the music is performed in an intimate setting, a small hall little bigger than a large drawing room – just the sort of size which composers used to have in mind for chamber music. The audience is rarely more than a hundred and usually fewer, and consists mainly of those who stay throughout the weekend and attend all four concerts.

Third, the weekends take place at two outstanding hotels. The Castle in Taunton and Jesmond Dene House in Newcastle are both among the finest in England, and are famous for comfort, character, and cuisine. We usually have exclusive use of the hotels during these music weekends, and there is opportunity for artists and audience to mingle throughout.
While these events are undeniably indulgent and leisurely retreats, they are also intended to stimulate the mind and enchant the aesthetic sensibilities. Within an over-arching theme, the music is carefully chosen and programmed to provide an illuminating sequence – while each concert is satisfyingly self-sufficient. Some weekends include preconcert lectures, and musicians often talk during their concerts.
This season is as strong as ever, and begins in November with a wonderful and rare opportunity to hear five great piano quintets – by Schubert, Schumann, Enescu, Elgar and Vaughan Williams. They are performed by the marvellous Schubert Ensemble, interspersed with piano quartets. The centenary of Benjamin Britten’s birth is marked by the inclusion of one of his string quartets in each of the four concerts otherwise devoted to Beethoven given by the internationally acclaimed Endellion Quartet in January. The incomparable Wihan Quartet return in February with an irrestible programme of Mozart, Schubert and Dvořák. Our Schubertiade in Newcastle in March, concentrating on the last years of the composer’s life, will also be a quite exceptional experience. The seven musicians of the Aronowitz Ensemble, new to our music weekends, perform a variety of music in a variety of permutations, with British composers to the fore. There have been music weekends at The Castle since 1977, and Martin Randall Music Management have been organising them since 2003. The first music weekend at Jesmond Dene House in Newcastle took place in 2011.
The price for the weekend packages covers almost everything, from the concerts or talks themselves to interval drinks, via luxurious accommodation, extravagant afternoon teas and memorable dinners. Even gratuities for hotel staff are included.

Approaching their thirtieth anniversary, the Schubert Ensemble is established as one of the world’s leading exponents of music for piano and strings. Giving over fifty concerts a year, they have performed worldwide, have curated festivals, including most recently two at Kings Place in London, and have recorded extensively, all to much critical acclaim. This is the ensemble’s second appearance at our Taunton weekends. Foremost in this carefully crafted programme are five of the greatest piano quintets by early- and late-Romantic composers. Those by Schubert and Schumann are wellknown and much loved, but performances of the Elgar, the Vaughan Williams and the George Enescu, the brilliant Romanian composer, are rare. These are complemented by four string quartets of the same era and one piano quartet – Mahler’s only chamber work, and surely one of the leastknown of great (if unfinished) chamber works.
The musicians give talks and demonstrations, a feature of their concerts for which they are famed and which they do brilliantly. The members of the ensemble will be present throughout the weekend and at dinner, providing ample opportunities to talk to them further.

Formed in 1979, The Endellion String Quartet is recognised as one of the finest string quartets in the world. Over the years, its schedule has included regular tours of North and South America and concerts both at home and abroad. It has collaborated with leading artists including Joshua Bell, Mitsuko Uchida and Steven Isserlis. The quartet regularly broadcasts on BBC Radio 3 and appears at all major British concert series and festivals. It has a great presence in London, performing at the BBC Proms, at the South Bank and at Wigmore Hall. It has previously won the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Best Chamber Ensemble and has been resident quartet at the University of Cambridge for twenty years. This will be the quartet’s sixth time at The Castle Hotel, the most recent being ‘Haydn at the Castle’ in 2009. To mark 100 years since Benjamin Britten’s birth, they will perform all three of his three string quartets (No.3 was his final major work) and his ‘Three Divertimenti’. Juxtaposed with these will be some of Beethoven’s finest works for string quartet. Pre-concert talks will be given by Geoffrey Norris, regular broadcaster on BBC Radio 3 and Music Critic for The

The Wihan Quartet, formed in 1985, are heirs to the great Czech musical tradition. The quartet’s outstanding reputation for the interpretation of its native Czech heritage and of the many classical, romantic and modern masterpieces is widely acknowledged. They have developed an impressive international career, which includes visits to major festivals in Europe and the Far East. They are frequent visitors to the UK and can often be heard on BBC Radio 3 as well as in concert at Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall, the South Bank and other venues throughout the country. This will be the Wihan Quartet’s sixth appearance at The Castle Hotel since their first music weekend in 2003. They also performed for our inaugural weekend at Jesmond House in Newcastle and have given concerts at our European music festivals. They will perform a delightful programme consisting of works selected from the core of the Classical and Romantic string quartet repertoire. Three composers are represented: Schubert, Mozart and Dvořák.
Pre-concert talks will be given by Richard Wigmore, who is a music writer, lecturer and broadcaster for BBC Radio 3. He writes for The Daily Telegraph, BBC Music Magazine and Gramophone. He read French and German at Cambridge and later studied Music at the Guildhall. His publications include Schubert: the Complete Song Texts and Pocket Guide to Haydn.

For that passionate Schubertian Benjamin Britten, the period between the completion of Winterreise in October 1827 and the composer’s death in November 1828 was the most miraculous ‘year’ in the history of music. Granted, there is plenty of competition, not least from Mozart in 1791. But for many music lovers the masterpieces of Schubert’s astonishingly prolific final phase speak with a unique power and poignancy. Focusing on the piano works and songs of 1828, this Jesmond Dene Schubertiade provides an appropriately convivial setting for some of the composer’s greatest music performed by internationally renowned artists. Franz Liszt dubbed Schubert ‘the most poetic of composers’. After hearing works such as the haunting F minor Fantasy for piano duet, the otherworldly B flat Sonata, and the collection of songs published posthumously as Schwanengesang, few, surely, would disagree. We have assembled a stunning line-up of artists for this special event:
Roger Vignoles is one of the world’s leading accompanists. In a career spanning four decades, he has collaborated with many of the finest singers and instrumentalists, and he is widely regarded as a leading authority on the song repertoire. He will perform a recital each with Stephan Loges and Elizabeth Watts and will join Martin Roscoe in a rare performance of Schubert’s F minor Fantasy for four hands.
Soprano Elizabeth Watts is now firmly established as one of Britain’s brightest new talents. A former BBC New Generation Artist, she was awarded the Kathleen Ferrier Prize in 2006, and won the Rosenblatt Recital Song Prize at BBC Cardiff Singer of the World in 2007. She has performed as a recitalist at leading UK venues including the Purcell Room and Bridgewater Hall, not to mention major opera roles and performances with leading orchestras, and she is currently an Artist in Residence at the Southbank Centre. 6
Born in Dresden, Stephan Loges began singing at the age of nine with the Dresden Boys Choir and then studied at Hochschule der Künste, Berlin, where he won the Gold Medal in the National Youth Singing Competition. In 1999 he won the Wigmore Hall International Song Competition. He has performed in recitals throughout the world, on the opera stage and on record. He has appeared at the Royal Opera House in several roles including the Count (Marriage of Figaro), Mercutio (Romeo et Juliette) and Schaunard (La Bohème) and also regularly performs at La Monnaie in Brussels. Martin Roscoe is one of Britain’s most prolific performers. He has performed at the BBC Proms seven times and is one of the most regularly featured pianists on BBC Radio 3. He works regularly with most UK orchestras and has particularly close links with the BBC Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony, Hallé and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestras. As a chamber musician he has long-standing associations with Peter Donohoe, Tasmin Little and the Endellion and Maggini Quartets as well as more recent collaborations with Jennifer Pike, Ashley Wass, Matthew Trusler and the Vertavo Quartet. Steven Osborne is one of this country’s foremost pianists, renowed for his idiomatic approach to a wide range of repertoire. He has won numerous awards, including first prize at both the Naumburg International Competition

The Aronowitz Ensemble was formed out of the desire of seven outstanding international artists to explore and perform chamber music together in the highly adaptable combination of string sextet and piano. They joined the BBC’s New Generation Artists scheme in 2006 and as a result haved featured extensively on BBC Radio 3 including broadcasts from the Wigmore and Bridgewater Halls, the Sage Gateshead, and Aldeburgh, Bath, Cheltenham and City of London Festivals. They have also performed twice at the BBC Proms. Indeed, since its sell-out début at St John’s, Smith Square in 2004, the Ensemble has maintained a busy schedule of engagements across the UK and beyond, covering a vast range of repertoire. Guest pianist Charles Owen will join the ensemble for the Elgar Piano Quintet on Saturday morning. Charles studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School, the Royal College of Music and later with Imogen Cooper. He has been described by Gramophone as ‘one of the finest British pianists of his generation’.
For their inaugural music weekend at Taunton, the ensemble will present four rich and varied recital programmes, each of which features a major twentieth-century British masterpiece alongside a selection of the Ensemble’s favourite chamber works of the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods. With particular focus on the great repertoire inspired by the classic string quintet and piano quintet formations, the programmes display the group’s flexibility and versatility.

The Castle Hotel, Taunton The Castle Hotel is one of the finest hotels in England, renowned for its excellent and caring service, for comforts traditional and modern and for its superb restaurant. It has been owned and run by the Chapman family for sixty years.
Music weekends have been held here since 1977, and Martin Randall Music Management took over the running of them in 2003. Concerts and talks are held in the air-conditioned Music Room. Bedrooms are individually and charmingly decorated and well equipped. The majority have a bath with a shower above. Most are a good size, and the largest, with a sitting area and separate dressing room, overlook the garden in the remains of the twelfth-century castle. Single rooms – for which there is no supplement – are fairly small and have a single bed.

Jesmond Dene House, Newcastle Jesmond Dene House is a nineteenth-century mansion in a quiet wooded suburb about two miles from the centre of Newcastle. It opened as a luxury hotel in 2005 and in 2009 was awarded Hotel of the Year, England.
The public areas are stylishly decorated and include a Tudorstyle wood-panelled hall where the concerts take place. There is an excellent restaurant and a garden. Service is attentive and efficient. Bedrooms are well designed in a modern idiom with good lighting, attractive textiles and modern comforts such as a cd/dvd player. Some of the bedrooms are in the adjacent ‘New House’ and some bathrooms have a shower only (across all room categories). Single rooms comfortably fit a double bed.
