M ARTIN R ANDALL MUSIC M ANAGEMENT

Music Weekends 2016 & 2017 A music weekend arranged by Martin Randall Music Management is a very special experience. There is the pleasure, first, of hearing music performed by artists of the highest calibre, and who are all among the very best in their fields. Second, the music is performed in an intimate setting, a small hall little bigger than a large drawing room – just the sort of size which composers used to have in mind for chamber music. The audience is rarely more than a hundred, and consists mainly of those who stay throughout the weekend and attend all concerts. Third, the weekends take place in excellent hotels. The Castle Hotel in Taunton and The Swan in Lavenham are among the most agreeable and comfortable hotels in England. We often have exclusive use during these music weekends, and there is the added opportunity for artists and audience to mingle. While these events are undeniably indulgent and leisurely retreats, they are also intended to stimulate the mind and enchant the aesthetic sensibilities. Within an over-arching theme, the music is carefully chosen and programmed to provide an illuminating sequence – while each concert is satisfyingly self-sufficient. Pre-concert talks are also included, by a musicologist or by the musicians themselves.

We begin our 2016–17 season in October 2016 with The Heath Quartet, who are international prize-winners and one of the best string quartets of today. The Schubert Ensemble offers a programme of piano quintets in November, taking us on a journey from the early works for this medium to the rich repertoire of Romantic quintets for piano and string quartet. In January, the ever-popular Wihan Quartet are joined by additional players to present quintets and sextets by Dvořák, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms. We also hear Dvořák’s Cypresses for string quartet. March sees the London Bridge Trio and guests perform a weekend of music by Mendelssohn and Schumann. As with their highly successful Mozart weekend in 2015, the programme has been jointly curated by Richard Wigmore and Daniel Tong, pianist with the Trio. The season finishes in April 2017 when the Vienna Piano Trio perform five concerts of complete Schubert trio works over the Easter weekend. Some of the composer’s duo works are also included, as are several works by other major composers. Individual concert tickets are also available to purchase. See page 11 for prices and how to book.

Prices include accommodation, most meals, admittance to the concerts and talks, and much else besides.

Music Weekends 2016 & 2017

The Castle Hotel in Taunton is renowned for its excellent service, for comforts traditional and modern and for its superb catering. It has been owned and run by the Chapman family for over sixty years.

The Swan Hotel & Spa in Lavenham, Suffolk, has been an inn since 1667. The hotel spreads through a number of contiguous half-timber buildings which date to the 15th and 16th centuries.

Music weekends have been held here since 1977, and Martin Randall Music Management took over the running of them in 2003. Concerts take place in the Music Room.

The hotel’s forty-five bedrooms have been recently renovated in a pleasingly restrained manner which retains their historical character. Most bathrooms have a bath with shower fitment (only one has a walk-in shower). A limited number bedrooms are available on the ground floor.

The hotel’s forty-four bedrooms are individually and charmingly decorated and well equipped. Doubles and twins are mainly of a good size and vary in outlook. Single rooms, while comfortable, are small and have single beds – for this reason we do not charge a single supplement for them. The largest – Garden Rooms – are in the remains of the twelfth-century castle overlooking the garden. Each has a sitting area and separate dressing room. The majority of rooms have a bath with a shower fitment. The hotel has a lift, though some bedrooms are then accessed via stairs. The Music Room is on a mezzanine level, up a flight of stairs from the lobby – there is provision for wheelchair users (please ask us for information). Taunton lies on the doorstep of Exmoor and the Quantocks, areas with some of the loveliest countryside in England. www.the-castle-hotel.com

There is a bar, extensive lounge areas and a brasserie – though our group meals are served in the hall, which is separate to this. In 2015 the hotel opened the Weavers’ House Spa. Service is of a high standard. The hotel has a car park which is free of charge for guests. Due to the historical nature of the building, the hotel does not have a lift, and on the ground floor there are steps to negotiate here and there. If you have access requirements, please contact us as soon as possible so that we can discuss your specific needs with the hotel. Lavenham is only around 60 miles from London and yet it feels a world apart, and an age away. Surrounded by gently rolling farming country, this Suffolk village is noted for its outstanding 15th-century church and half-timbered mediaeval houses. www.theswanatlavenham.co.uk

Recipients in 2013 of the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Young Artists Award, they have won various other prizes and appear regularly at major centres, often collaborating with leading artists and composers. They have established a relationship with London’s Wigmore Hall which sees them perform a complete cycle of Bartók quartets there in 2015–16, and at least two further series are planned. All four members of the Quartet hold teaching positions at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Their programme at Lavenham focuses mainly on the works of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven – those of the two latter composers being indebted to the first. Debussy and Dvořák also each make an appearance, and we hear three Chorale Preludes by J.S. Bach, which the Quartet performed recently on BBC Radio 3’s In Tune. The speaker Misha Donat has given many radio talks and pre-concert talks at a number of venues in Britain and has lectured at universities here and in the USA.

Music Weekends 2016 & 2017

The Schubert Ensemble Great Piano Quintets 18–20 November 2016 (md 948) 3 days • Price: from £750 William Howard piano • Simon Blendis violin Alexandra Wood violin • Jane Salmon cello Douglas Paterson viola • Peter Buckoke double bass Speakers: members of the Ensemble The Schubert Ensemble, formed in 1983, is established as one of the world’s leading exponents of music for piano and strings. It has performed worldwide and has recorded over thirty critically-acclaimed CDs. The group appears regularly at London’s Wigmore Hall, and has an established relationship with King’s Place which has resulted in a number of concert series. This is the ensemble’s third music weekend at The Castle Hotel in Taunton. Their programme includes some of the most important works for piano quintet, including Robert Schumann’s Quintet in E flat, written in 1842, the first notable work written for piano and string quartet. Widely acclaimed at the time, it inspired many later Romantic composers to write in the genre, including Brahms, whose monumental F minor Quintet is one the most frequently performed of all, and Dvořák, whose contribution is infused with Czech folk song and dance. We also hear Franck’s passionate Piano Quintet, Gabriel Fauré’s exquisite First Piano Quintet (Op.89) and a rarely heard but gorgeously lyrical work by Bruch. The final concert of the weekend returns to the early nineteenth century with Hummel’s Quintet in E flat Op.87 (1802) and Schubert’s much loved Trout Quintet, which both feature double bass in the line-up. Members of the ensemble give talks and demonstrations before the performances, a feature of their concerts for which they are famed and which they do brilliantly. They will be present throughout the weekend and at dinner, providing ample opportunities to talk to them further.

Speaker: Richard Wigmore The Wihan Quartet, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2015, is widely acknowledged as one of the world’s finest chamber ensembles. The group is particularly noted for its interpretations of Romantic Czech music, and their programme includes a substantial dose of the music it is best-known for: that of fellow countryman, Antonín Dvořák (1841–1904).

Practicalities

The weekend is mainly devoted to music for string quintet and sextet by five giants of chamber music repertoire: Dvořák, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Brahms.

‘No dinners’: if you would prefer to make your own dinner arrangements on both evenings, there is a reduction of £80 per person.

Dvořák originally scored his eighteen Cypresses, settings of poems by Gustav Pfleger-Moravsky, for voice and piano in 1865, later arranging twelve of them for string quartet. We hear two or three of these at the start of each concert.

For hotel details, see page 3. For further practicalities and individual concert ticket sales, see page 11.

Prices – per person. Two sharing: standard double or twin £730; garden room £870. Single occupancy: single room (single bed) £730. We may be able to offer double rooms for sole use at around 10 weeks prior to the weekend at £780. Included meals: breakfasts, 2 afternoon teas, 2 dinners.

The Wihan Quartet are joined by Josef Kluson (viola) and Michal Kanka (cello), members of the Prazak Quartet; the two groups perform together regularly. Josef and Michal studied at the Prague Conservatory, where the Prazak Quartet was formed in 1972.

Music Weekends 2016 & 2017

London Bridge Trio & Friends A weekend of Schumann & Mendelssohn 3–5 March 2017 (md 161) 3 days • Price: from £750 Tamsin Waley-Cohen violin Kate Gould cello Daniel Tong piano with guests: Lucy Gould violin Gary Pomeroy viola • Stephan Loges baritone Speaker: Richard Wigmore For Robert Schumann, Mendelssohn was ‘the Mozart of the 19th century’. Mendelssohn in turn revered his contemporary, conducting Schumann’s symphonies and playing in his chamber music. This weekend celebrates the musical friendship between two great German early Romantics in works that range from Mendelssohn’s astonishing early A minor Quartet – a homage to late Beethoven – to Schumann’s gloriously uplifting Piano Quintet. En route we take in piano trios by both composers, including Mendelssohn’s D minor Trio, and songs familiar (Schumann’s Dichterliebe) and unfamiliar. Our Schumann-Mendelssohn celebration is far from an allmale affair. While their sex prevented them from pursuing a full-time career, both Schumann’s wife Clara and Mendelssohn’s elder sister Fanny were gifted composers who are at last beginning to receive their due. Fanny Mendelssohn’s string quartet has a power and passion that might surprise the unwary, while Clara Schumann’s piano trio is so melodically rich and skilfully written that early critics assumed it must be her husband’s work. The London Bridge Trio, one of the UK’s most thrilling chamber ensembles, have performed at major concert venues throughout the UK and recorded to critical acclaim. They regularly collaborate with guest performers to present larger chamber works. Lucy Gould is violinist with the Gould Piano Trio, one of the finest chamber groups in the UK. Gary Pomeroy is violist of the award-winning Heath Quartet. Baritone Stephan Loges was an early winner of the Wigmore Hall International Song Competition and has appeared on concert, opera and recital stages worldwide. Speaker Richard Wigmore is a Music writer, lecturer and regular broadcaster for BBC Radio 3.

They were Resident Ensemble at Wigmore Hall during the 2011–12 season, and have also been resident at the Vienna Konzerthaus since 2006. This will be the Trio’s ninth music weekend at The Castle Hotel in Taunton. Schubert is the dominant theme of their programme, which will include the complete set of his works for piano trio, and two duo works – the sonata (D821) which was originally famously written for arpeggione (an early-19thcentury string instrument) and piano is almost always performed on the cello, as it is here by Matthias Gredler. During the course of the weekend, we also hear music by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms, and Romantic composer Heinrich von Herzogenberg (1843–1900). The Trio also performs Eduard Steuermann’s arrangement of Schönberg’s Verklärte Nacht, one of the composer’s most popular and more accessible works. Usually our music weekends take place from Friday until Sunday – this weekend is a day longer with an extra concert. Easter Sunday morning is free, leaving time to
