“My grateful thanks to everyone.” “I wanted to come back because of the excellent treatment before.” “Staff seemed to be more responsive to every request by patients.” “Nurses, you rock.” “I’m bragging about you with everybody – insurance representatives, neighbors, friends, church, pharmacy, work associates, and anybody else I talk too.” “I was taken care of immediately because of chest pain and a hard time taking a deep breath.” “I would like to recognize Kim and Luda for their exceptional care. They made my stay very pleasant. I also, liked that they were

my nurses the entire stay. I didn’t feel like I had to explain anything to another person. I felt right at home.”

“My care was really exceptional!”

“The staff were all incredible and seemed to truly enjoy what they do. I was more than a patient; that seemed to matter to them.”

“From the minute I was picked up by ambulance

to the time of my discharge everyone was wonderful and I felt very comforted and cared for.” “Best hospital food I ever had; even better than the meals elsewhere. Every meal was delicious.” “Heart Center was great. Very responsive and caring. Even spent time just talking and assuring me.” “Everyone was wonderful in the ER.” “I think Parma Community General Hospital is an excellent hospital, the best place to get well again, and should get the highest rating.”

“It’s awfully scary having trouble breathing and they knew how to care for me and calm me.”

“I cannot say enough good things.” “2nd stay on cardio floor and am very impressed and pleased with nurses and all staff.” “Things happened so fast I thought I had reservations.” “I feel P.C.G.H. ranks with the best.” “Thanks to the nurses and doctors in the Heart Center for keeping my father alive! Magazine & Community Guide

Welcome to North Royalton! With its small town charm and a variety of big city amenities, North Royalton is one of the most attractive communities in northeast Ohio. It’s not difficult to understand why families want to live here…superior recreational activities and parkland, great athletic fields, an excellent school system and the conveniences of chain stores, individually-owned stores and restaurants and easy access to major highways, makes North Royalton a premier community in which to reside. The new North Royalton Family Branch YMCA, a state-of-theart fitness, recreation and health facility, is scheduled to open this spring and the entire community is full of excitement! Right next door to the YMCA will be the new home of the North Royalton branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library, a 30,000 square foot facility! Economic development continues as we offer amenities and incentives for businesses to locate or expand here. Our proximity to major highways ensures easy access to whatever is needed, both commercially, as well as industrially. This magazine, published in partnership with Image Builders Marketing, has become a tradition in our town. It reminds us of the many great attributes our community has to offer and serves as a handy reference guide to be used throughout the year. It is made possible by the generous sponsorship of your local friends and neighbors. Please support them when you are in need of services in our area. Sincerely,

Robert A. Stefanik, Mayor, City of North Royalton

State of the City

North Royalton State of the City By Ken McEntee

With convenient access to everything from

parkland to highways and big city amenities, North Royalton is among Northeast Ohio’s most attractive communities for families and businesses. The past year was an exciting one in both of those areas, says Mayor Robert A. Stefanik. Taking the opportunity to make lemonade from a lemony economy, the city last year was able to purchase the former Avalon Event Center, on State Road, at well below market value. The property has been transformed into the North Royalton Family Branch YMCA, a partnership between the Greater Cleveland YMCA and the city of North Royalton. The new 52,000 square foot facility, which will feature an aquatic center, a gymnasium, a fitness center and a rehabilitation center operated by Parma Community General Hospital, is scheduled to open this spring. Additionally, the city, YMCA and Parma Hospital have negotiated an agreement to have the hospital construct a 7,000 square foot addition to the YMCA with an opportunity to expand further in the future. The city also has entered into a purchase agreement with Imaginative Investments for a 15-acre parcel just east of the YMCA on Wallings Road. The front parcel, on Wallings Road, will be the home of the new North Royalton Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library. At 30,000 square feet, the state-of-the art facility will be double the size of the existing 4

branch. That existing facility, along with three parcels to the north, are reverting back to the city for use in our expanding Memorial Park district. “Together, the YMCA, Parma Community General Hospital and the Cuyahoga County Library facility represent a $22 million dollar investment in our community and retain or create 100 jobs in our city,” Stefanik says. “Construction payroll for these projects during this two-year period will be about $9 million dollars.” The mayor says the city is continuing to work closely with the business community by providing resources to expand and renovate their facilities. “Once again, North Royalton led the county in obtaining grants through the Cuyahoga County Storefront Renovation Program and assisted 23 businesses in applying for those grants,” he says. “Local businesses received about $78,700 in direct grants, leveraging about $244,430 worth of new improvements. One of our newest businesses, Magalen Furniture, worked closely with our Community Development Director, Tom Jordan, in identifying grant opportunities and financing programs to assist their move to North Royalton. Overall, companies in our Industrial Park continue to prosper and in some instances, have expanded during the past year.” Companies that invested in expansion last year include Laszeray Technology, Induction Tooling and May Industries. Changes in economics and expansion in nearby communities with interstate access, makes it evident that it is necessary to re-evaluate the city’s previous Master Plan, Stefanik says.

AROUND THE CITY: (opposite page, left to right): The North Royalton Family Branch YMCA’s construction; the intersection of Ridge Road and Route 82 in the Center of North Royalton. City Hall, (above) and Laszeray Technology’s offices.

“Grocery stores, restaurants and specialty shops that cater to the needs and character of our community in a quaint villagetype atmosphere is what I envision at the State Road/Route 82 corridor,” he suggests. “Members of the Master Plan Task Force, along with professional planners and members of our community, will be the driving force to help mold a center that will make our city proud.” Comprised of nearly 22 square miles of scenic, rolling land, North Royalton is Cuyahoga County’s third largest city in terms of area. With a population change of 41 percent since 1990 and 15 percent since 2000, North Royalton is one of the county’s fastest-growing communities, with almost 33,000 residents.

A Premier Parks & Recreation City With parents and community volunteers leading the way, North Royalton has a steadfast tradition of youth sports. “The city’s youth baseball program, run by the North Royalton Baseball Boosters, has 2,200 participants every year,” says Mayor Bob Stefanik. The City also boasts a highly popular soccer league, managed by the North Royalton Soccer Club (NRSC), which draws as many as 1,200 kids annually between the ages of 4 and 14. There is also a very strong peewee football program through the Southern Hills Youth Football League and a North Royalton Basketball Club. The City’s youth sports programs utilize public fields that are maintained by the city, but are otherwise self-sustaining, relying on registration fees and sponsorships. “North Royalton’s recreation facilities include four parks, eight baseball diamonds (including a large diamond at York and Rt. 82), four soccer fields, three tennis courts and one skate park,” says Parks and Recreation Director Larry Battaglia. The popular Summer Fun Program includes a Kids Dog Show and the Annual George Modock, Jr. Memorial Fishing Derby, now in its eighth year. And let’s not forget the Cleveland Metroparks in the southern portion of the City. Among other activities, many residents enjoy biking, hiking or picnicking in this beautiful community park. www.NorthRoyalton.org

The New North Royalton Family YMCA Opening Soon North Royalton Mayor Robert Stefanik presided over a ceremonial ground-breaking on May 6, 2011 for a new North Royalton Family YMCA, slated to open in late spring 2012, at 11409 State Road. The new facility will measure 45,000-square feet and include a 7,000 square foot rehabilitation center operated by Parma Community General Hospital. The existing site, formerly the Avalon Event Center, will be retrofitted to house aquatics, gymnasium space, a segmented fitness center, locker rooms, administrative offices and child care areas. The site was purchased by North Royalton from Citizens Bank of Flint, MI. for $2.1 million. Construction costs are being paid for by the YMCA of Greater Cleveland, which has embarked on a campaign to raise $3 million in pledges, with North Royalton contributing $2.2 million. “It has been the missing puzzle piece for North Royalton,” said Stefanik. “I’m really excited about it, as is everyone I talk to. It’s been one of my (personal) goals since I took office.” The Greater Cleveland YMCA already operates several successful programs in North Royalton including swim lessons, before-and-after-school child care, and summer camp. The new North Royalton facility will expand on those programs while offering many new programs geared towards families and seniors. The need for a recreation facility in the area is great, say officials. One quarter of the community’s population is age 55 and older. The North Royalton branch will provide multiple opportunities for the community’s active older adults including fitness programs, wellness classes, and a meeting center for seniors. Family programs will include aquatics, Adventure Guides, youth sports including basketball, adult leagues, and expanded child care options. YMCA Inaugural Art Exhibit to Feature Local Artists By Lauren Haas Amanfoh

Who would have thought that a place to make you more fit would also be where you witnessed a new work of art? It’s true – and it’s right around the corner. The inaugural exhibition at the new North Royalton YMCA combines the themes of community pride, youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Not only will this fantastic project enhance the new public space of the YMCA, but it also fosters an increased sense of community involvement and appreciation for the visual and performing arts. But if you have more of a flair for the dramatic, two local community theatres will keep you on the edge of your seat. The Royalton

IN TUNE WITH ITS RESIDENTS: The ribbon cutting for Royalton Music Center’s new location at 10167 Royalton Road (above) and the North Royalton High School Marching Band performs at the Annual Home Days Parade (left).

Players premiered an original Christmas musical and their season features genres for every theatergoer, including Broadway cabarets, comedies, and the very popular (and nail-biting!) murder mysteries. The 82nd Street Theatre provides economical, family-friendly entertainment for the community as well. The troupe provides a place for children and teens to explore the world of theatre in a safe environment, and even offers opportunities for kids to learn backstage and administrative duties as well. Little ones can become mini-Mozarts too, thanks to The Music Class – which features fun-filled sessions of singing, dancing, movement, and instrument play for children ages 0-5, hosted at Royalton Music Center. The mixed age groups are developmentally appropriate, and allow families to explore the joy of music together! And the inviting sounds of the North Royalton Community Band have always been music to my ears. Their musical entertainment ranges from overtures to contemporary – and everything in between. Community bands are a time-honored American tradition with a long and rich history, and here in North Royalton they provide a handful of public concerts each season for residents to enjoy. Hopefully you have enjoyed the sights and sounds of the North Royalton High School Marching Band parading down Ridge Road during the Homecoming Parade or have attended a great theatrical production right here in your home town. And soon, we’ll be able to see the inspiring works of local artists while fitting in some healthy family time to boot! Lauren Haas Amanfoh is President of the Royalton Music Center

enters its second half-century as the leading health care provider for North Royalton, one of its founding communities in 1961. The rapidly expanding southwest suburbs – including an 85 percent increase in North Royalton’s population from 1950 to 1960 – spurred the building of Parma Hospital in the late 1950s. Strengthening the community means more than just providing quality health care to those who walk through the hospital’s doors. Parma Hospital will offer physical therapy in the new North Royalton Family YMCA, located in the former Avalon Event Center on State Road. With more than 7,000 square feet of space, the Hospital will have treatment and exam rooms, a pool with a lift for aquatic-based therapy, and space for physician offices and community talks. This will be the second therapy satellite location in the city, with another at State and Royalwood roads.

Parma Hospital has also begun providing athletic training services for sports teams at North Royalton High School. Experienced athletic trainers attend practices and home games for both boys’ and girls’ sports. Many of the youth of the community were born in Parma Hospital’s Small Wonders Maternity Center, which boasts the latest fetal monitors and computerized monitoring in the comfortable birthing suites. Should complications arise during delivery, the staff has access to certified neonatal nurse practitioners from University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – currently ranked #4 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

High Tech, High Touch Parma Hospital has brought the latest generation of robot-assisted surgery to the community setting for urological, bariatric and gynecological patients. A nationally renowned urologist serves as the medical director of this popular, minimally invasive surgery. In 2012, the nation’s leading quality rankings organization ranked Parma Hospital the best hospital in Ohio for coronary interventions and among the top in the state for overall cardiac services. HealthGrades gave Five-Star ratings to Parma Hospital for excellence in coronary bypass surgery, cardiology for two consecutive years and coronary interventional procedures for eight consecutive years. This recognition would not be possible without the collaboration with EMS providers from the North Royalton Fire Department. EMS works closely with the Hospital’s Emergency Department and Cardiac Catheterization Lab to transmit EKGs from the field to the hospital, expediting care for cardiac patients and ensuring that staff are ready upon arrival. Many of the city’s well-trained firefighter/paramedics were graduates of Parma Hospital’s acclaimed EMS Education Program. “As a resident of North Royalton, I am grateful that I live only a short distance away from one of the best community hospitals. This hospital provides excellent care and is second to none when it comes to treating heart attack victims,” says David Nedrich, chairman of Parma Hospital’s Board of Directors. My Pet is Not Sick, Why Do I Need a Vet? If your pet is in good health

and does not display any signs of illness, you may be surprised to learn that your pet still needs annual veterinary care. Annual visits help your veterinarian to establish a baseline health record for your pet. Your pet will receive a nose to tail exam that evaluates the following: mouth, eyes, ears, heart, lungs, abdomen, joint health, skin health, neurological health and much more. Once a baseline is established, it will allow the veterinarian to know when your pet deviates from his normal state. The veterinarian will perform a centrifugation fecal test to detect intestinal parasites, and a heart worm and tick borne disease test will also be recommended once a year. And when Alex Hechko with vaccines are needed, it is his trusted friend, Bailey. important to discuss options with the veterinarian. Our clinic tailors vaccine recommendations based upon your pet’s lifestyle. And remember, the veterinarian is here to help keep all members of your family healthy! —By P. Adam Hechko, DMV

Helping Businesses Prosper is Our Business For more than 90 years, the North Royalton Chamber of Commerce has been working to help business develop and prosper. Now more than ever, Chamber membership helps businesses reach their goals and save money. Taking advantage of the numerous tangible benefits offered, coupled with networking opportunities, companies are able to expand their circle of influence and increase their bottom line. The Chamber of Commerce organizes and sponsors the annual Community Festival and hosts the State of the City Address. The Chamber also offers scholarships to graduating high school seniors each year, and sponsors the North Royalton City Schools Report. A true source of pride for the Chamber is the Royalton Recorder, our community newspaper. The Royalton Recorder, with a circulation of 16,000, is delivered to every home and business twice a month and contains the most news and information pertaining to our City and schools. The Chamber also publishes an online City Profile and Chamber Directory, and a Business Card Directory. The Chamber and Royalton Recorder offices are located at 13737 State Road. Office hours are M-F from 9-5. For more information, call 440-237-6180 or visit www.nroyaltonchamber.com. Call the newspaper at 440-237-2235 or email rrnews@aol.com. 24
