The
of Lorain County
Home is where the heart is – and Sheffield Village is the heart of Lorain
County! With over 13.50 square miles and nearly 6,925 acres containing many wonderful amenities such as a first-class school system, top-notch safety forces and service department, an active historical society – Sheffield Village accomplished this by retaining a neighborly village atmosphere while offering the conveniences of a city. Sheffield Village is one of the area’s most forward-thinking, proactive and fiscallyresponsible communities demonstrated by an increase in cost-control measures all without diminishing any services. Crain’s Cleveland Business Magazine recognized us as the third most affluent suburb in Lorain County behind Avon and Avon Lake! Our business-friendly atmosphere, progressive and innovative attitude and active North Coast and Lorain County Chambers of Commerce continue to have over 251 successful hometown and global business institutions make Sheffield Village their home. A Business Council was initiated in 2008 to provide a yearly function for all Sheffield Village businesses to create a cooperative effort to recognize current businesses and assist them with their continued growth. The occasion offers a networking forum as well as an opportunity for the Mayor to present his annual “State of the Village” address. Our schools are rated “excellent” and among the best in Lorain County and are within the same category as our neighbors Avon and Avon Lake. Voters overwhelmingly approved a $31 million bond issue for the addition of a new school to be ready for the 2014-2015 school year! Residents benefit from close access to the advanced educational opportunities of the Lorain County Community College and Ohio Business College. Our parks, the French Creek Nature & Arts Center and James Day Park, provide over 750 acres of mostly wooded landscape and 4.5 miles of natural walking trails, with baseball and football fields, picnic area, shelter and playground to enrich the lives of our residents and their families. A new walking trail has been built along Colorado Avenue and French Creek Parkway with a new trail in process on Harris and Oster Roads. Our challenge to you is to personally go out and discover what we have in the Village – to keep the Village vibrant and growing while making it a great place for living, raising a family, working and playing. Sincerely, John D. Hunter, Mayor & Safety Service Director Village of Sheffield

Village Overview
Sheffield Village Overview By John D. Hunter, Mayor and Safety Service Director
Sheffield Village is the heart of Lorain County! The
Village is a great place to live and work with tremendous recreational opportunities, an excellent school system and our resident business services are second to none. Central to the atmosphere of Sheffield Village is the extensive parkland with more than 750 acres managed by the Village and the Lorain County Metro Parks. The French Creek Nature & Arts Center and the TrueNorth Cultural Arts offer superb music and theatre programs for all ages as well as bird and wildlife observation areas. This facility is a true “gem” for the nature and arts lover. We continuously work on expanding our many short and long walking trails around the Village. With so many options available, our residents never have to leave the Village if they don’t want to. The idea is to make sure people can move around safely when walking and bicycling. A section of walking trail located on the south side of Colorado

Avenue starting from Harris Road and moving west was accomplished with a $5.2 million federal stimulus grant. As this publication is being printed, a new trail on Harris and Oster Roads will be completed through a state and federal grant. Over 251 businesses ranging from manufacturing plants to fast food restaurants generate the revenue base allowing the Village’s nearly 4,000 residents to enjoy the lowest taxes in Lorain County. Unlike neighboring cities, we don’t have any real estate taxes for operating the Village. The Village operates entirely on income taxes. We’re extremely conscious of how to serve the community while taking good care of its tax dollars.” With plenty of undeveloped land Sheffield Village has plenty of room to grow. But development will be done in a way that welcomes new businesses, yet keeps industrial and commercial areas from infringing on the Village’s quiet and residential environment. We continue to improve our economic development by offering a favorable business climate to attract a variety of commercial, retail and office developments. We have two

business parks that have plenty of room for expansion and we have room for continued residential expansion. But we want to also keep in mind we want to keep the Village a village as well as a great place to live. Sheffield Village offers many advantages to businesses and residents due to our proximity to I-90 and the Ohio Turnpike. We’re close to shopping centers, malls and just about any type of restaurant you can name all within minutes of a highway. Whether it’s Cleveland or Sandusky – both are very convenient. We’re the major route to Ohio Business College and Lorain County Community College. LCCC is the premier education center in Lorain County with 17,300 students and where part of the campus is located in the Village. An active citizenry is the heart of Sheffield Village, too. With the Historical Society, the Lions Club and the seven churches in the Village all are very active in the community. The community spirit peaks during Family Pride Day, an annual celebration that is held on the second Saturday in September. Last year’s event drew close to 1,500 attendees. This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, September 8th at the French Creek Nature & Arts Center. Our residents enjoy excellent Village services. We’re the only fire department in the county whose fire fighters all are paramedics. When you have somebody come out to a call you’re getting three paramedics, not two paramedics and a fireman. Our police and fire departments have the latest emergency equipment and the service department is second to none. We’re known throughout Lorain County as having the cleanest streets during the winter. This fact is clearly visible when you leave other cities and enter Sheffield Village. The Village is able to offer excellent services at a low cost to residents by being efficient and proactive, rather than reactive. The proactive planning is reflected in the Village’s 2015-2025 Project, a study into the needs of the Village over the next 10 years. We are preparing now for what we need to do as far as infrastructure five to 10 >> Continued on page 5
Sheffield-Sheffield Lake Youth Baseball and Softball Tags All the Bases with Kids Sheffield-Sheffield Lake Youth Baseball Association “SSLYBA” is a non-profit organization that is fully-funded by the generous donations of yearly sponsors and the registration of players. The mission of SSLYBA is “to provide an instructional baseball program for the youth of Sheffield Village, Sheffield Lake and our neighboring communities. To emphasize the value of sportsmanship and the spirit of competition, to instill the virtues of teamwork while teaching youth how to win and lose with dignity.” Each year the program raises money to support the play of both the girls and boys in the league. SSLYBA is one of Lorain County’s fastest growing sports complexes and its success is due to volunteers. This year enrollment hit a high of 410 members. On opening day 2012, all 5 fields were filled with guests and players. A Promising Future For Sheffield-Sheffield Lake School District The Sheffield-Sheffield School District is continuing in its quest for excellence. The past year has been one of the most productive years in the history of the school district. We were named an “Excellent“ school district by the Ohio State Department of Education. BHS was named a “School of Promise“ by the ODE for the accomplishments of its students from low income homes. The community passed a $31 million dollar bond issue to build a new middle school/high school. We continue to maintain financial stability, carrying over nearly $10 million dollars in these difficult financial times. A schoolcommunity committee of over 65 people Dr. Will Folger, Superintendent compiled a new Five Year Strategic Plan. Our facilities upgrade continued with further stadium upgrades, a new scoreboard, the installation of an eight lane, all-weather track, the construction of a new exercise room, and

upgrading the old weight room into a new wrestling room. We have implemented a “bottom up” academic leader program. We restored high school bussing. We have continued to work on improving our early childhood program by implementing a kindergarten “kick start” program, a twoweek kindergarten preparation boot camp. The majority of our calls and inquiries have been directed at the district’s new building program. Progress continues,

Five Tips for Building Credit Today’s economy relies heavily on credit. Whether
you’re looking to buy a car, a house or get a student loan, a company is extending credit to you. Your credit score determines how likely you are to repay your debt. While having bad credit can make it hard to get a loan, having zero credit can also be a disadvantage. Zero credit means you have little or no history of paying back debt. Many lenders refuse people with no credit history because they can’t determine if the person is likely to pay them back. Here are five tips for building credit:
1. Open a secured credit card, which requires you to put
down a deposit to provide assurance you will pay your debt.
2. Stick with one credit card. People with multiple credit
cards are more likely to use them all, so pick one card with a low interest rate and stick with it. 3. Borrow or charge only what you can afford. Having good credit means consistently paying back what you’ve borrowed. 4. Pay on time and in full every month, without carrying a monthly balance.
5. Check your credit score once a year to ensure that your
credit is properly building. The important thing is to be responsible in your decisions and actions to establish a stable financial footing. — Karen Davis, manager of the Sheffield Village KeyBank branch. She can be reached at 440-934-2266.

Sleep Apnea is well known in the adult population. What has been overlooked is the presence of sleep apnea in children. Children’s symptoms include hyperactivity and behavioral problems, whereas adults tend to be lethargic and sleepy. Both adults and children with sleep apnea will deal with health issues but children will experience developmental and growth problems that will affect their whole life. If a child regularly snores when sleeping they most likely have sleep apnea. Treatment in children is tonsil and adenoids removal and or palatal expansion. People of all ages need to be diagnosed with a sleep study before and after treatment for sleep apnea.
