National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was founded in 1985, and the baby pink ribbon was chosen as the symbol that everyone has come to recognize and love. The pink ribbon movement has spread to everything from professional athletes’ uniforms to famous landmarks twinkling in pink lights during the month of October. This worldwide movement has come to represent a sense of community and togetherness for women all over who may be fighting the battle against the disease. COMMON TYPES OF BREAST CANCER Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS): DCIS is a non-invasive breast cancer. About 1 in 5 new breast cancers will be DCIS, and almost all women with this early stage of breast cancer can be cured. Ductal means that the cancer starts inside the milk ducts, carcinoma refers to the cancer beginning in the tissue, and in situ means “in its original place.” DCIS is considered noninvasive because it hasn’t spread beyond the milk duct into any surrounding tissue. DCIS isn’t life-threatening, but it does increase the risk of an invasive breast cancer coming later, or DCIS returning. Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC): IDC is the most common type of breast cancer. About 8 out of 10 breast cancers are invasive ductal carcinomas. Invasive means that it has spread to surrounding breast tissues. IDC starts in the cells that line a milk duct in the breast, breaks through the wall of the duct, and grows into the nearby breast tissues. After that, it may spread to other parts of the body through the lymph system and the blood stream. IDC is most common in older women; two-thirds of women are 55 or older when diagnosed with IDC.

UNCOMMON TYPES OF BREAST CANCER Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC): Inflammatory breast cancer is an uncommon type of invasive breast cancer that accounts for only 1% to 5% of all breast cancers. However, while rare, it is aggressive. IBC starts with the reddening and swelling of the breast instead, instead of a more common lump. It tends to grow and spread quickly, with symptoms worsening within days or even hours, which makes it very important to recognize symptoms and seek immediate treatment. Phyllodes Tumor: Phyllodes tumors are rare breast tumors that develop in the connective tissue (stroma) of the breast as opposed to the ducts or lobules. Most are benign, but there are others that are cancerous. Paget disease of the nipple: This cancer starts in the breast ducts but spreads to the skin of the nipple. It is rare, accounting for only about 1-3% of all cases of breast cancer. Angiosarcoma: Sarcomas of the breast are rare, making up less than 1% of all breast cancers. They start in cells that line blood vessels or lymph vessels, and can involve the breast tissue or the skin of the breast. Some of these may be the result of radiation in the breast area.
