DESIGN PHILOSOPHY I believe that architecture should inspire the way of living of the inhabitants. At its most basic concept, architecture should respond to human’s necessities and demands with a humanistic touch but if we strive to understand “architecture at its true meaning we must strive to achieve a balance between these two ideas, in order to create buildings that perform and excite its audience in a daily matter. The totality of a project should cope with its context and remain sensitive and responsive to its environment. It must blend-in with nature and try not to result in an aggressive invasion. I intend to understand the arts and humanities as well as comprehend the architecture principles for the creation of spaces that will have a future impact on society. My readings, sketches, designs and works contribute in the molding of my personality, desires, and hopefully future architect.

The project consists on grasping and learning about the basic concepts of architecture by a going through a deep analysis of Peter Zumthor’s Theory of Architecture. The pavillion was located inside the University Campus on a strategic point that resulted by mapping and analysing the student’s circulation routes. The project emphazises on creating a true experience for the public focusing on light, sound, texture, temperature, location and odor features. Mies Van de Rogh’s pavillion was used as the case Study. The structure was modulated, and the resultant volume consists on an open space, incorporating its context with its indoor spaces. The first floor is used as an art gallery and the second floor remains as a terrace, a space that invites the students that seek a peaceful and releaving space.

SANTA LUCIA CONDOS Instructor: Arq. Verónica Pozas Site: Monterrey, N.L, Mexico
The ultimate goal of these project was to create a masterplan that respected in sustainable terms its context and adapted to the Santa Lucia canal. The challange was to analyze the different typologies and propose a new type of mixed-use buildings. Throughout the canal a public space was enclosed with plazas, fountains and public corridors. The building consists of seventeen floors, the first floor is destined for commerce use and communicates the building to it’s adjacent building’s commerce floors. Having Alvar Aalto as it’s case studio, its floor plans relates to its geometry and openess towards public areas.

The purpose of the project was to restore and revitilize the use of the building, without modyfing its exterior facades as it is a very important yet abandoned set of historical buildings. Established in 1909, the furniture factory was part of Monterrey’s industrial culture. We managed to revitilize the area by adding gardens a wide open plaza and establishing places for recreation such as a library, cafeteria and a multipurpose building. The project includes a nursery and a clinic that offers their services to the necessities of the area. The building located on the East incorporates a methodology in which the room can be transformed with different types of geometric configurations through the arrangement of the platforms and the use of the previously established structure.

The project is linked through pedestrian and bycicle trails which run through vast gardened areas. The edification seeks to achieve permeability and transparency in order to create spaces that directly relate to the outdoors. The program includes a balance between commercial, cultural and an area of amenities. Using the latest trends in technology and design on green building, highlights the ecological concept of the project. Going through the bycicle trails and inside the buildings, the expectators can observe different textures, colors and aromas creating a multisensory experience.

The house consists of 350 m2. The proposed volume opens itself towards important geographical features such as the mountains located on the north and southern sides. The first floors contains the public and common areas and the second floor contains the dorms oriented to the patio. The color and materials used aim at the integration with the surrounding volumes, proposing only the use of color as a reflection of the materials themselves, where white and gray give the desired continuity between the existing and proposed. While entering the house the expectator is welcomed by an illuminated tree which recieves indirect sunlight.

The purpose of the project was to revitilize the abandoned city center. The parametric approach of the project is based on population and transportation density. Each transportation route of the area was mapped and with the resultant factors a mesh was created. The mesh has a direct relationship with density factors and its volume was used to determine the different height limitants on each block. The resultant volumes were deformed by the impact created of the sound, vectors caused by traffic. On an urban scale, a typology for commerce and apartment plans was proposed. A masterplan was created to reincorporate lost sites and a new street solution was proposed where pedestrian use lies as a principal factor.
After defining 33 different points of intervention, the next objective is to establish the form and scale of the volumes determined by the first parameters (circulation and transportation density, number of habitants, areas of intervention and conservation).

On a first instance, we seek to densify the zone and icrease the floor use by building volumes that cover all the intervention area resulting in boxes that have no context relation. The box is shaped and deformed based on the maximum levels determined by denisity and transportation factors on each point of our area of intervenience. Sidewalks are widened according to the level of public transportation on every street, the more transportation, the wider the sidewalk. The following operation if performed by subtracting the intervenible spaces (pre-existing structures or public areas) To reduce the agression of the remaining volume, spaces are eroded to its initial shape.

These colony stands in a segregated area where there is a lack of governmental services and a serious drainage problem. The vast majority of the population has a low income and is unable to provide an economical support for their families. The project consists on trying to create a sustainable colony. This means revitilizing the abandoned areas and creating hectares of urban farming. The idea is to redesign a drainage system that treats some of the water that flows into the Santa Catarina River using it to create a sustainable irrigation system. Urban farming will create new jobs and create a local economy for the neiborhood. A new road was proposed with pedestrian and bike lanes that links the neighborhood with important avenues.
