António Amorim Mar Português Ó mar salgado, quanto do teu sal São lágrimas de Portugal! Por te cruzarmos, quantas mães choraram, Quantos filhos em vão rezaram! Quantas noivas ficaram por casar Para que fosses nosso, ó mar! Valeu a pena? Tudo vale a pena Se a alma não é pequena. Quem quere passar além do Bojador Tem que passar além da dor. Deus ao mar o perigo e o abismo deu, Mas nele é que espelhou o céu

Portuguese Ocean Sal-laden sea, how much of all your salt Is tears of Portugal! For us to cross you, how many sons have kept, Vigil in vain, and mothers wept! Lived as old maids how many brides-to-be Till death, that you might be ours, sea! Was it worth while? It is worth while, all, If the soul is not small. Whoever means to sail beyond the Cape Must double sorrow - no escape. Peril and abyss has God to the sea given, And yet made it the mirror of heaven.

Some facts about Portuguese Did you know that... Portuguese is the only romance language other than Galego to use the personal infinitive? Portuguese is the only lang to use mesoclise? Ex: Dir-te-ei (I will tell you Literally: Tell you will I) Portuguese has two different verbs for the verb "to be"? Ser and Estar Portuguese has three demonstratives? : Este/s - esta/s - isto = this esse/s - essa/s - isso = that (next to person spoken to) aquele/s - aquela/s - aquilo = that (far from the speaker) Portuguese is the only romance language to actively use the future and past subjunctive in everyday speech? Portuguese is the only language to have the dipthongs ao and oe? Portuguese is one of the few languages that uses the progressive tense like English? Ex: Eu estou indo (I am going) Portuguese alphabet does not have a "k", "w" or "y" (unless it comes from a foreing language) Words in English like marmalade, banana, albino, buffalo, pagode, fetish, etc... are from the Portuguese language

Ane Lize How Portuguese Sounds The translations of the following poems cannot convey the sound of the language. To asume that, written as it is, and looking conspicuously neo-latin, Portuguese must sound like Spanish or Italian, is a major error. Pronounced rapidly, the Portuguese from Portugal does not sound remotely like either. It lacks the crisply articulated, staccato quality of Spanish or Italian.Though it is in fact richer in vowel sounds, it produces a curiously muffled impression. This is due above all to the relaxed articulation, to the frequent contraction of the syllables leading up to the tonic stress, and to the weakness of those which follow it. Hearing it without the text, one would not

Products Higher quality knits and woven fashion garments for women, men and kids, as well as mama size and private label.

CO 16233 easily guess that it is a Romance language, and hearing it with the text, one would at first have some difficulty in finding the place on the page. Portuguese words on the whole have more syllables than English ones, though some of its syllables are regularly 'swallowed'; and the final unstressed syllables are an importante sound effect of the language. English is particularly rich in monosyllables, and a breat many English words end rather abruptly. Faced with Portuguese lines containing a number of polysyllabic words, coupled with elaborate and sometimes repetitive grammatical constructions, one is tempted to be briefer and more elliptical in English, annd this could easly lead to translations which would

seem terse and even laconic by comparison. On the other hand, to compensate for this by padding the line would be to less than justice to Pessoa. Some commanplace Portuguese constructions - the personal infinitive, certain types of causal construction and of noun clause - are admirably neat in Portuguese, but become extremely heavy and prosaic in English, if the translator tries to maintain the construction. He should obviously not carry literalism to such lengths. The defference between ser ('to be, essentially) and estar ('to be, accidentally') is a notorious difficulty of translaction, and Pessoa can be relied on to use the verb one would least expect.

The Collection Ane-Lize takes it´s inspirations in the “french higher side of living culture” uses all kinds of fibers to make the garments different and make the user not only comfortable but as well as self confidant.

But what’s the symbol – not the sun, not the moon, not the earth – In this premature sunset amidst the fading blue With the sun caught in expiring tatters of clouds And the moon already mystically present at the other end of the sky As the last remnant of daylight Gilds the head of the seamstress who hesitates at the corner Where she used to linger (she lives nearby) with the boyfriend who left her? Symbols? I don’t want symbols. All I want – poor frail and forlorn creature! – Is for the boyfriend to go back to the seamstress.

Tenho em mim como uma bruma Que nada é nem contém A saudade de coisa nenhuma, O desejo de qualquer bem.

I have in me like a haze Which holds and which is nothing A nostalgia for nothing at all, The desire for something vague.

Sou envolvido por ela Como por um nevoeiro E vejo luzir a última estrela Por cima da ponta do meu cinzeiro

I’m wrapped by it As by a fog, and I see The final star shining Above the stub in my ashtray.

Fumei a vida. Que incerto Tudo quanto vi ou li! E todo o mundo é um grande livro aberto Que em ignorada língua me sorri.

I smoked my life. How uncertain All I saw or read! All The world is a great open book That smiles at me in an unknown tongue.

Tenho o costume de andar pelas estradas Olhando para a direita e para a esquerda, E de vez em quando olhando para trás… E o que vejo a cada momento É aquilo que nunca antes eu tinha visto, E eu sei dar por isso muito bem… Sei ter o pasmo comigo Que tem uma criança se, ao nascer, Reparasse que nascera deveras… Sinto-me nascido a cada momento Para a eterna novidade do mundo…

The Keeper Of Sheep II My gaze is clear like a sunflower. It is my custom to walk the roads Looking right and left And sometimes looking behind me, And what I see at each moment Is what I never saw before, And I’m very good at noticing things. Quem quere passar além do Bojador

Tem que passar além da dor. Deus ao mar o perigo e o abismo deu, Mas nele é que espelhou o céu Portuguese Ocean Sal-laden sea, how much of all your salt Is tears of Portugal! For us to cross you, how many sons have kept, Vigil in vain, and mothers wept! Lived as old maids how many brides-to-be

Till death, that you might be ours, sea! Was it worth while? It is worth while, all, If the soul is not small. Whoever means to sail beyond the Cape Must double sorrow - no escape. Peril and abyss has God to the sea given, And yet made it the mirror of heaven.
