Welcome
Marvelous Mode has become more Marvelous with the new name Wispy Dahlia Love. Wispy is airy, femnine Fantasy. Dahlias are imperfect, powerful, sensual and floral. Love is the core. Marvelous Mode was about high designer online shopping with emphasis on Millinery industry and accessories. However, I wanted to create something more personal; a reflection of my styles, talents, loves and interests. A couple of years ago, I tested a mag just like that and there was far more readers wanting to see and read about my personal story than industry. So here we go with the first issue of Wispy Dahlia Love Magazine. Heather Leigh 2

Do More Style With Less In each issue, I will take a few pieces from my wardrobe and create different outfits and looks. I believe in building a small wardrobe that is full of key pieces rather than bursting with things I will never wear. Recently there was a documentary on BBC involving a London designer who was uncovering how much waste that people generate from clothing and the humantarian cost of Fast Fashion. This is something that I as a designer have been painfully aware of for years. I understand the process from design to end product and know that the prices of Fast Fashion are not possible unless someone is getting paid next to nothing. I understand that we can't all buy high fashion and quite frankly much of it is over priced, but the low prices of Fast Fashion also makes it extremely difficult for young up start designers to make it. With all this said, I am starting my Do More Style With Less features in Wispy Dahlia Love Mag. 4

Autumn Winter Dressy Funky In Leopard In this issue, leopard print is in the spotlight from accents to all over. I style a dress, jeans, two tops, bolero and coat to make funky Retro Modern looks with profile Fascinators and Halo headbands. My footwear of choice is dressy cowgirl boots and retro platforms. Jewelry is minimal but pops with Glam and attitude. Beauty is 1940s Glam. So enjoy, fave, share and shop.

The Coat
Warm Orange double faced wool coat with gold leather cuffs and collar. I created this from a 1960s coat pattern and altered the pattern to be more 1930s style. I can wear this with jeans to cocktail semi formal styles. The bright orange feels so uplifting through AW and brightens my face.

The bustle back is completely my design and pattern. It’s made of a beautiful espresso wool tweed which I used to create the sleeve treatment and collar too.

Carole Lombard did high Glam with a sense of humor. She was over the top slapstick. Her costumes highlighted her distinct acting persona and characters. Here she wears leopard as accents.

Dresses like this are very specific as well as dressy but funky. You can get more wear out of dresses like this by changing up headwear, hair and makeup as well as shoes. Here, I did a more modern Glam rocker look with a retro felt embellished halo Headband to get another look from the same dress.

Funky Retro Modern in Pants Autumn colors with animal prints can take me out to cocktails, dinners and parties. This hat dresses the look up and the yellow contrasts with the peach. The yellow and oranges in the leopard print make the look zing together.
Wide leg jeans in a dark navy denim can be casual to dressy. I am not a fan of high waist so I created these in hip hugger with a little help from my mom. During the 1970s retro pants of 1930s & 40s we're popular but hip slung. So I opted to use a 1970s pattern for the not high waisted retro look.

Profile hats were very popular during the 1930s. They were popularized in Old Hollywood by stars like Harlow, Dietrich and Crawford. For me, this type hat is very Modern. The way it curves to the head and highlights the face is appealing to me due to my full face. Here I choose a color that contrasted but blended with the Bolero leopard print. Hats should make a statement for dressy Glam.

In this look, I changed into the simple burgundy tank and put on a 1940s style Halo flower Headband hat. This look is more smolder glam. Notice how much just changing the top and hat create a new look.

This particular Halo hat was my take on the after war years of 1940s when half hats were the thing. The Dahlia to me is a symbol of powerful, imperfect beauty which accents the black felt beautifully.

1940s Haute Turbans in a Halo style Ann Sheridan Publicity still from set of Nora Prentiss 1947 found on rubylane.com. She was known as a sweater girl and having oomph! I love how she was very womanly looking not girlish at all. Here the leopard is over the top in turban and muff. Wispy Dahlia Love

This time I brought together the bolero front with a vintage GNR rocker pin as a brooch and added a 1940s style Turban Headband. A bit more casual but still dressy. Again just simple changes in jewelry and Headwear created a new look.

Fall for Hats
I have been creating hats for women since 2002. Upon showing the new hats to friends at work, they promptly ordered one. It was from this a new passion sprung forth. But the foundation for loving hats goes back to when I was a little girl playing dress up. At seven, I inherited my great grandmother's Black Velveteen Half Hat with Black silk Veil. This hat has forever stayed in my mind and heart. The feeling I got when I looked at it was of sheer joy. Each time I create headwear, its a feeling of excitement and love. Fast forward to today, I am designing and creating my own line of Millinery. Each piece is a fantasy come true: a bit of Fairytale. Which is why I love Old Hollywood Film and Design. During the 1930s to 1950s costumes where designed by studio hired Designers. They were also manufactured on the lots. Sometimes they would out source the Millinery like in the case of Mr. John's Millinery for Gone With The Wind which Walter Plunkett was Costumier. Well I diverted‌ Now back to my new hats for 2018/19. I create styles that are meant to last and be investment pieces. Not throw away fashion. A great hat can take you on so many stylish adventures. The new styles are inspired by 1930s and 1940s. These styles are fancy yet minimal. They accent your look and personality. They impart a playfulness and immediate glamourous style. Each one is hand crafted by me with free form blocking and sewing. You can find Wispy Dahlia Love Millinery always @ http://wispydahlialove.com. Harlow Hat Style
Jean Harlow was Hollywood's first Sex symbol. To me she had a quality that was natural not created. She set a standard that other blondes can't touch. She was glamourous persona in 1930s. She made the slinky 1930s dress style the Vogue. For me, it was her hair and hat style that I love. That platnium curl side style made skull caps and side angle the trend. This hat style was a version on 1920s cloche but cut down on angle with bow. It was supremely chic and timeless.
It was this style that inspired the profile hats in this issue. The copper and yellow felt angle Fascinator Hats I dubbed Harlow Honey in this issue and available in the Shop https://wispydahlialove.tictail. com or http://wispydahlialove.com.

Retro 1940s Glam Makeup
I am a fan of late 1930s and early 1940s cosmetics. The look had an emphasis on red lips, full cheeks and natural eyes. In this issue, I used cosmetics from new lines with a retro appeal. My cosmetics of choice are Mally and Cargo. These products are Marvelous! They really gave me an Old Hollywood Glamour Beauty look. Wispy Dahlia Love

Retro Glam Modern Hair Color I was born a red head. Oh how I wish that I still was a red head. Over the years my hair became a dull neutral blonde. It was beach blonde all my years in Los Angeles. On a whim, I started putting some red tone in it about 8 years ago and got many compliments. I noticed it brightened my skin as well. So naturally, I decided to go full red. After about two years of red color, I noticed my hair falling out too much and my fine hair wouldn't hold the red colors. Then I decided it was time to go Glam blonde. After a few tries, I found a box system that works. Schwarzkopf are known for their blonde colors. When they launched the Claudia Schiffer Ultime line, I knew I had to try. So they sent me some samples. I was so impressed, I went out and bought the Lightener too. Please view my YouTube review for the Lightener I used. For a Baylage look, I added the Chocolate Copper Promo sample to my hair ends. The results are stunning ultra Glam hair color that is retro yet modern. Wispy Dahlia Love
