FREE ART PROGRAMS FALL 2015: September 29 – November 21 Our free art courses occur once a week for eight weeks from Tuesday, September 29 through Saturday, November 21. Each class meets for 2½ hours once a week unless otherwise noted. Students will be registered for one course initally and a second course if space is available. All students may enroll in unlimited workshops and special events. Please make your choices carefully. REMEMBER TO REVIEW YOUR SCHEDULE AND ONLY CHOOSE PROGRAMS YOU ARE ABLE TO ATTEND. HOW TO REGISTER NEW STUDENTS

RETURNING STUDENTS

Register during New Student Orientaton at Marwen! 6 – 8 Graders: 10:00am – 12:00pm on Saturday, Sept. 19 9 – 12 Graders: 2:00pm – 4:00pm on Saturday, Sept. 19 All new students must atend a two-hour orientaton session o n Saturday, September 19 accompanied by your parent or legal guardian prior to registering for your frst course with Marwen. Afer your frst term, you’ll be eligible for early registraton with all other returning students. If parental accompaniment is an issue, please call 312.374.2971. We encourage you to arrive early for your orientaton session; courses fll up on a frst-come, frst-served basis! Late entry is not permited.

Registraton for returning students starts Wednesday, August 19 at 3pm and closes Wednesday, September 2 at 5pm. Go to registraton.marwen.org. Register early; courses fll quickly! To register online you must create a username and password. If you have forgoten your password, click on “Forgot Password?” If you have forgoten the username or e-mail address associated with your account, please contact the registrars as soon as possible. Once you are logged on, you will be able to update your personal informaton, select classes and submit your applicaton. You will register for all future terms with that username and password. If you do not have access to a computer, visit a Chicago Public Library branch. Online registraton is not accessible on smartphones or tablets. All applicatons must be submited online. Marwen is free of charge and welcomes all students who: • Live within the city limits of Chicago • Study in grades 6–12 • Are under-served and cannot aford to pay for art courses elsewhere • Can make art independently for up to three hours at a tme • Self-elect to partcipate

ATTENDANCE

Atendance at all scheduled class sessions is mandatory. If you do not atend a scheduled session or are more than thirty minutes late, you will be marked as absent. If you are absent from more than two class sessions in the 8-day course, you will be dropped and not allowed to return to that course for the remainder of the term. It is your responsibility to communicate with Marwen about your reasons for being absent from class. If you are dropped for absences, you may lose your early registraton privileges or even be required to take a term of from Marwen programs. DIGITAL TO DARKROOM PHOTOGRAMS | LISA LINDVAY In this course you will explore the relatonship between digital and analog photography. Using junk food as the main subject, you will create photograms in the darkroom from digital negatves. You will gain a basic understanding of both digital and analog photographic processes, including operatng a DSLR Camera, basic photoshop, digital printng, darkroom black and white printng, as well as how to use studio lights. In additon to learning the technical skills of photography, you will also gain a basic understanding of 2D and 3D design principles.

CAMERA CONTROL: DIGITAL PHOTO FOUNDATIONS ALEXIS ELLERS In this course students will learn to freeze tme, blur moton, narrow their focus, and look from a new perspectve all with a Digital SLR camera. By learning the fundamentals of light metering students will practce and understand how to manipulate the camera to achieve their artstc vision. Using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom you will also build skills editng and managing your photography collecton.

THE 3D EXPERIENCE: 3D PRINTING & MODELING HOLLY HOLMES-BURTONWOOD This course is an introducton to the magical process of 3D printng and digital fabricaton. You will learn to use 3D modeling programs to create your own fgurines and designed objects. You will learn how to scan objects and people in 3D, generate life-like replicas, and use these fles for 3D printng in plastc. Lastly, you will learn how to operate the Printrbot 3D printers, load printng material, maintain, and troubleshoot them. Whether making a utlitarian object or a whimsical toy – the world of 3D printng will captvate you with its endless possibilites!

STOP MOTION ANIMATION | ERIKA VALENCIANA In this course you will learn how to produce diferent styles of stop-moton animaton, such as “claymaton”, cut out paper, “special efects”, people and objects as puppets, alternatve materials, and more! Through lessons in video producton such as art directon, music, and sound efects, you will learn how to enhance your projects and take them to the next level. By looking at the animatons of your fellow students as well as professionals you’ll contnue to build your artstc vocabulary and knowledge. Bringing it all together, you will produce several short weekly projects to culminate in a fnal project utlizing the techniques you enjoyed most.

THURSDAYS 5:00-7:30PM JEKYLL & HYDE: DRAWING OPPOSITES KEATON BELL & ALEX GOLDIN If there are two sides to every story, what would your story be? From stark black and white drawings to colorful expressionistc creatons, you will study the fundamentals of drawing while also learning to use color to play with tone and emoton. In this drawing class, you will create a diptych portrait exploring the line between the realistc and the surrealistc. EXPLORING CERAMIC TECHNIQUES | LEVI YASTROW In this course you will explore the relatonships between form, surface, and functon in order to create art for daily use, as well as art objects and sculptures. This ceramics course focuses on developing a strong foundaton in the fundamentals of ceramics technique. You will have opportunites to try a variety of hand-building methods and also be introduced to wheel throwing. Learning how to properly handle and manipulate clay at all of its diferent stages, you’ll improve your skills and achieve the form you designed – whether it’s functonal, funky, or just fun! FRIDAYS 5:00-7:30PM INTRO TO GRAPHIC DESIGN: EXPERIMENTAL LETTERING JONATHAN SANGSTER In this course you’ll learn a combinaton of experimental typography and hand-drawn letering techniques. You’ll be challenged to design and create your own visual communicaton solutons to a series of prompts. You will not only learn traditonal letering techniques and the language of typography, but also experiment to create letered messages with unusual materials such as food, found objects, collage, and photography. This course is perfect for you if you are interested in graphic design and also want to develop your own letering styles! SATURDAY MORNINGS 10:00AM-12:30PM SCREEN PRINT POP PORTRAITS | TARA ZANZIG Come learn all about the wonderful world of screen printng using your own handmade stencils! You will learn secret tps and tricks on layering, set up, and design to get the most from your screens. Looking at Pop Art for inspiraton, you’ll design and print your own pop art portraits. PUSHING LIMITS: SCULPTURE FOUNDATIONS | GWEN TERRY How can a large-scale, freestanding sculpture appear to be suspended in space, defying gravity? We will answer that queston in this class! We will explore the roles of structure, stability, tension, compression, and physical balance as we learn about and embrace the mechanical and technical challenges of large-scale cantlever and truss sculptures. Students will create individual freestanding sculptures as well as a large-scale collaboratve exhibiton installaton featuring a suspended arch on the Marwen campus! We will problem-

solve, innovate, create, and discover just how far we can push the sculptural limit! INTRO TO BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY | DAN HOJNACKI In this course you will learn the fundamentals of photography through the conventonal use of 35 mm flm cameras and a variety of printng techniques in the darkroom. You will be introduced to the history of photography and learn how to use alternatve process to create a photograph in the darkroom. Through these conventonal and age-old techniques you will develop a strong foundaton and understanding in photography and end with a series of black and white photographic prints. GRAPHIC NOVELS & COMICS: COVER DESIGN DAVID DOWNS “You can’t judge a book by its cover...” but it’s the cover of the comic book or graphic novel that entces you to open it up. Using professional tools, both analogue (pencil, paper, and ink) and digital (Adobe Photoshop), you will design an original and captvatng comic book cover. You will explore basic layout techniques, color theory, and special digital FX that give a comic book cover the dynamic charge to grab atenton and spark imaginaton! SATURDAY AFTERNOONS 1:30-4PM OIL OR NOTHING: PAINTING FOUNDATIONS HILARY BALDWIN In this introductory paintng course, you will learn how to look at the world around you in new ways and use what you see to create unique and expressive paintngs in oil of everyday objects. The basic paintng and drawing skills that you will develop in this class will be helpful for the rest of your art-making interests. Color, expressive mark-making, lights and darks, volume, and compositon are important for all artsts to understand, whether you design anime characters, carve from stone, or make movies! You will complete a series of observatonal drawing and paintng exercises in a variety of materials including charcoal, pastel, and oil paint and take a feld trip to The Art Insttute of Chicago to inspire a fnal, full color oil paintng on canvas. HANDBUILDING WITH CLAY: INTRO TO CERAMICS ROSS ROADRUCK This course is an introducton to the world of sculpture and ceramics. You will learn to use some essental hand-building techniques to create a variety of functonal and decoratve works of art. You will learn how to build with clay using pinch pot, coil, slab and mold techniques. Whether you are interested in making fguratve sculptures or functonal pots, this course will ofer a litle bit of everything and give you valuable ceramic skills.

EXPLORATIONS IN WEAVING | KATIE VOTA This course is designed to introduce you to all the creatve possibilites of weaving! The techniques you’ll learn are adaptable to a variety of functonal and sculptural possibilites, depending on your individual artstc vision and preferences. We will construct four types of looms, cover the basics of using each type of loom, while also having plenty of tme to weave. You will be introduced to artsts working in and experimentng with the feld of weaving and gain inspiraton from their varied approaches. You’ll soon discover that the possibilites in the wonderful world of weaving are endless!

THE VIEW FROM HERE: ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY PHIL DEMBINSKI & SPECIAL GUEST FROM THE CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE FOUNDATION, TOCARRA MALLARD Are you interested in exploring Chicago and Chicago architecture while building and honing your skills in digital photography? In The View From Here, you will travel both downtown and through neighborhoods capturing dynamic shots of the places where we live, work, learn, play, and visit all while discovering how these places came to be. This course includes a trip to the Chicago Architecture Foundaton!

DRAWING THE PORTRAIT: PORTFOLIO SERIES CHRISTIAN ORTIZ Want to strengthen your portrait drawing skills while developing a personal artstc style? In this course you will focus on the portrait as part of building your portolio for art schools and scholarships. We will start by practcing observatonal portrait drawing and then develop work that uses the face to investgate personal ideas, concepts, and styles in any medium. All drawing levels and artstc backgrounds are welcome! This course is part of the Portolio Series that ofers a diferent topic each term.

WHAT I STAND FOR: STREET ART & MURALS | BRENDAN HUDSON Art can be for everyone and street art is a way to express your voice and vision to the world around you. In this course you will create a collaboratve mural using tools and techiques introduced throughout the course such as acrylic paintng, spray paintng, stenciling and wheat pastng. Together we will look at street art, graft, mural paintng, and community arts while exploring the many diferent reasons for and methods of creatng art for the street. There will be a special emphasis on experimentaton through collaboraton in this course with the opportunity to pursue individual projects as well.

GLASS MOSAIC: MANDALAS | FRANCINE GOURGUECHON A mandala is a graphic design form and is known as a sacred symbol of the universe. Using a compass and ruler you will frst design your own unique geometric mandala. Afer you’ve solidifed your design, you’ll cut and place art glass on plexiglass using your mandala as a template. Incorporatng elements of design, compositon, and geometry, you will create a brilliant and intriguing stained-glass window that refects your unique vision of our universe. IMAGES FROM THE AFTERLIFE: BLACK & WHITE SPIRIT PHOTOGRAPHY | JESSE AVINA From its earliest inventon, photography was seen as magic, a device that could view more than human sight or sense could perceive. Darkroom photography swindlers of the late 19 th century exploited this ignorance and claimed the camera could peer into the aferlife and capture images of the deceased or the very essence of ghosts, ectoplasm. In this course students will be introduced to darkroom photography and the use of manual 35mm cameras. Employing the same tricks as 1800s hoaxers such as double exposure and darkroom print manipulaton, students will create “authentc records” of the spirit world. THURSDAYS 5:00-7:30PM ABSTRACT PAINTING | BRADLEY BIANCARDI In this course you will learn about the current state of abstract paintng. You will be encouraged to create unique and ambitous abstract paintngs. We will discuss aspects of creaton such as compositon, the implementaton of ideas, paintng from the imaginaton, how to direct the viewer across the picture plane, and how to create form and space. You will use acrylic paints and other water-based materials to complete three paintngs. Extensive instructon on how to work with acrylics will be a part of the course. We will view images of arthistorical and contemporary abstract paintngs. RECONSTRUCTED FASHION | ELISE BERGMAN Take a look at fashion as a mode of self-expression. You’ll research fashion history, form, shape, movement, ft, volume, texture, color, and embellishments, and discover how they apply to our personal styles and current fashion trends. You’ll learn to use basic hand and machine sewing skills to alter the look and ft of existng garments. Projects include personalizing t-shirts and deconstructng vintage clothes and reconstructng them into contemporary and wearable, one-of-a-kind garments. STREET PHOTOGRAPHY: DECISIVE MOMENTS MARTA GARCIA Whether it was a stranger’s face, the shadow they cast, or the background they were standing in front of, have you ever seen someone on the street and had the irresistble urge to take a photo of them? Learn how to capture the beauty in the mundane of everyday life through this introducton to street photography. You will learn how to capture “decisive moments” as well as how to take candid photos of strangers, up-close and

personal. In this course you will develop your eye for street photography by studying the masters such as Vivian Maier, Henri Carter-Bresson, Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand, and many others. We will use the camera to explore and express what’s happening in society and create dynamic fnal photographic prints. STUDIO ANIMATION | Jeremiah jones This course will include an exploraton of movement and image. Through partcipaton in this studio, you will learn how to use animaton sofware to create experimental animatons using computer video editng sofware. The class will discuss appropriaton, abstracton and the work of other artsts working with the moving image. You will create a series of fnished works presented publicly through social media as well as classroom screenings. FRIDAYS 5:00-7:30PM ARTISTS AS: MEDIA MAKERS | ANDERSON CASTILHO Are you passionate about telling stories and marketng in a creatve way? In this course, you will use your passion and communicaton arts to create a marketng video. You will meet with media arts professional, tour studio producton spaces, and learn industry standards to have a taste of TV, flm producton, and communicaton arts. SATURDAY MORNINGS 10:00AM-12:30PM THE POW OF PENCIL, THE WOW OF WATERCOLOR MARGE KELLY Drawing and paintng have been used for centuries to render plants. In this course we will use simple, high quality materials, to develop skills in realistc pencil drawing and watercolor paintng. Building layers of tone with Graphite pencil and paintng the same subject with layers of watercolor can be very similar, especially in light and dark shading. Taking the tme for close and intense observaton of botanic specimens will reveal amazing details and refne your seeing and making as an artst. LIGHT & CLAY: CERAMIC VESSELS | DANIEL SANCHEZ Lights on! In this class you will create ceramic sculptures that use light and shadow as complementary elements. While learning how to build with clay using both hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques, you will also have the opportunity to alter and enhance your vessels by cutng, carving and adding clay. RENDER IN BLENDER: INTRO TO 3D MODELING ROOSEVELT PITTMAN In this class you will learn the basics of 3D modeling in Blender. You’ll start by constructng a basic model using polygonal and subdivision techniques that are frequently used in video games. You will then use the same tools to invent a model of your own imagining. Combining drawings made by hand as well as printed reference material, you will create a preliminary design with multple views to serve as a template for the 3D constructon process. Whether you’re new to 3D modeling or have some prior experience, you’ll be challenged to build upon

and enhance your skills while learning new techniques and functons in the applicaton as you Render in Blender! SATURDAY AFTERNOONS 1:30-4PM DRAWING SPACE & FORM | LINDSEY DORR-NIRO What is drawing and how might it transform our way of seeing and understanding the world? This course will provide you with the most important technical skills as well as challenge you to expand your understanding of what drawing can do and be. Inclass technical exercises emphasize drawing as a practce of looking and seeing the world more closely and clearly, while independent projects draw on your own creatve vision, your unique perspectve, and your experience of personal space. Both conceptual and abstract exercises will challenge you to think critcally and experiment while drawing from personal experience. In additon to intensive studio work, we will look at ways that artsts throughout history have defned and redefned drawing, from the earliest cave paintngs made 40,000 years ago to drawing in contemporary art.

FINDING YOUR FORM: INDEPENDENT SCULPTURE PROJECTS JEFF AUSTIN This course will teach you how to envision, design, refne and create a unique sculpture of your own! Each week, you will be introduced to a new set of sculptural materials, tools and processes to help you make your vision a reality. The course will also include presentatons on historic and contemporary art, collaboratve group exercises and class discussions to help you understand and speak about your work with confdence! Come prepared and inspired to fnd your unique form! CHARACTER DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT | NIC MEIER Students will learn to design their own original characters, and learn the process by which characters in comics, video games, and animaton are created. Students will learn how to use references, silhouetes, and iteratons to design a character from scratch, and be able to refne their design through critque and discussion.

WORKSHOPS ACT I: PRACTICE TEST Grades 11 - 12, Saturday, October 10, 9:00am – 1:00pm Prepare for college testng by taking a practce ACT test. You’ll take all four sectons and the practce test will be treated just like the real thing! Please remember to bring two sof-lead pencils and a non-graphing calculator for the math secton. ACT II: REVIEW AND STRATEGY Grades 11 – 12, Saturday, October 17, 10:00am – 12:00pm Learn ACT test-taking strategies and get an in-depth look at the essay secton to help you improve your score! You may atend this workshop even if you did not take the practce test, and you’ll receive your scores back if you did. PORTFOLIO REVIEW Grades 10 – 12, Monday, October 12, 4:30 – 7:30pm Are you serious about applying to an art school? Thinking about applying for art-related scholarships? This is your chance to share your portolio and get feedback from professional artsts and art school admission representatves. You’ll get tps and recommendatons from the experts on how to get your portolio on track—don’t miss this opportunity! Have questons about what to bring or how to prepare? COLLEGE OPTIONS AND APPLICATIONS Wednesday, October 21, 5:30 – 7:30pm Families and students are invited to explore the ins and outs of the college process: types of colleges, researching schools, flling out applicatons, and more! You’ll leave with new informaton, resources, and a tmeline for next steps. Open to families and students. In this workshop you’ll get tps for writng a strong essay, start the writng process, and leave knowing what college admissions ofcers are really looking for in an essay or artst statement! Open to families and students. FINANCIAL AID Wednesday, November 4, 5:30 – 7:30pm Come learn the entre fnancial aid process and how to make college afordable! This workshop will cover the ins and outs of college costs, applying for fnancial aid, searching for scholarships, and more. You’ll leave with fnancial aid resources and knowledge of next steps in paying for college! Registraton is open to families and students. DOCUMENTING YOUR ARTWORK Grades 10 – 12, Saturday, November 14, 9:30 – 1:30pm Atenton high school students! Do you need to submit an art portolio for college admissions or scholarships? Are you interested in learning how to professionally document your artwork? In this workshop, you’ll learn everything you need to know about documentng, editng, organizing, and submitng your work!

COLLEGE VISITS School of the Art Insttute of Chicago (SAIC) Grades 9-12, Monday, October 12, 9:15am – 2:15pm Come check out one of Chicago’s leading art schools! At SAIC we’ll tour the art studios and learn about the admission process. Lunch and transportaton provided. *Please note this will take place on a non-school day for all CPS high school students.

University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Grades 9-12, Wednesday, November 11, 9:30am – 3:30pm Come visit one of the great local schools in Chicago! We’ll tour UIC, learn about the admissions process and visit some of their great art spaces on campus. Lunch and transportaton provided. *Please note this will take place on a non-school day for all CPS high school students.

CAPSTONE Capstone Programs ofer Marwen’s most dedicated students the opportunity to develop specifc technical or conceptual art making skills at an advanced level. To be considered for Capstone Programs, students must complete a special applicaton process that may require a portolio submission and interview. MARWEN LAB | Julia Klein, Lisa Lindvay, and Christan Ortz Grades 10 – 12, Fridays, 5:00 – 7:30pm Fall 2015, Winter 2016 and Spring 2016 This course is by applicaton only and takes place for the duraton of an entre school year. Applicatons for the 2015 – 2016 school year are due Friday, August 14! Are you dedicated to your art? Do you have ideas for your own art projects? Do you want to dive deep into a specifc art discipline such as Sculpture, Paintng/Drawing, Mixed Media, Photography, or Digital Media? Will you be in grades 10-12 this coming fall? If you answered “yes” to these questons, then you may be ready for Marwen Lab, an extended course designed for Marwen’s most dedicated students. With the personal guidance of expert teaching artsts, Lab Artsts have access to all of Marwen's studios and artmaking resources throughout the school year. Marwen Lab is designed to give you the opportunity to work closely with an experienced teaching artst to develop your own art-making techniques and concepts as you learn new ways of expressing yourself through your art. You will fnish the school year with a completed a body of work for your portolio that will also be featured in a special gallery exhibiton!
