Come to this Abe Lazarus Society session and discuss the continued relevance of Marx’s ideas to our world today.

Abe Lazarus (1911-67), one of Oxford's best known communists in the 1930s, was a brilliant public speaker and agitator. Known as 'Firestone Bill' after a successful Brentford Tyre factory struggle, Abe organised strikes at Cowley Pressed Steel Works in 1934, the Florence Park tenants' rent strike, the Oxford Bus dispute and the Cutteslowe Wall campaign. As we 'raise Lazarus', we pay tribute to Abe's memory in our political study and discussion sessions. The Abe Lazarus Society has hosted over 20 discussions since its launch in June 2011. Topics so far have included the Left political history of Oxfordshire; Dialectical and Historical Materialism; Exploitation; the Environmental crisis; Fascism; the EU and its Austerity; Che Guevara and the 'New Man' theory; Intellectual Property; Class and Democracy; an Alternative Economic and Political Strategy; George Orwell and the Spanish Civil War; China; World War I; the crisis in Ukraine; Africa and Imperialism; Greece and EU fiscal strategies; 'Free Trade is Trade War'; and the rĂ´le of Women workers in the February 1917 Russian Revolution. ALS also organised the showing of a classic 1960s Jean-Luc Goddard polemic film. We meet several times a year in different venues in Oxford. Study sessions have a short opening by an invited speaker, leaving ample time for discussion open to all present. Future topics for 2018 will be chosen from suggestions by the supporters of the Abe Lazarus Society.
