Political Economy Current Capitalist Crisis 17 November, 7pm Simon Mohun, Emeritus Professor of Political Economy at Queen Mary University of London, examines the current crisis in global capitalism.

W(h)ither the working class? Labour market changes and class composition in a time of austerity 24 November, 7pm Roger Seifert, Professor of Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations, examines changes in the UK labour market such as the incease in informal work, the further decline in manufacturing and the hollowing out of the public sector.

Online Courses Trade Unions, Class and Power This online course is for all those who see the need for a strong trade union movement today. It builds on participants' own experience to assess the challenges currently facing trade unionists and draws on the lessons of past and present struggle to understand the issues of class and power. It runs from 17 October till mid-December with weekly forums. A Peoples’ History of Crime & Punishment for Beginners with Simon Renton 13 September; 20 September; 27 September; 4 October; 11 October, all 7pm The aim of this series of 5 classes on consecutive Tuesdays is to provide the historical background to the criminal law, particularly that of England and Wales, from a critical and Marxist point of view. This course covers themes of class, race and gender and subjects including the decline of public capital and corporal punishment and the rise of the prison. £22 for all 5; £5 per class

Paul Mishler is a professor and activist who specialises union education and the history of radicalism in the US. He will discuss the history of the US labor movement and its signifigance today.

Readings from 'Dare Devil Rides to Jarama', a new play by Neil Gore, plus a drinks reception and the unveiling of a restored plaque listing the 80 British dead at the Battle of the Ebro.

A Tribute to Gertrude Elias

with Nilu York, Swee Ang & Donald Hinds 22 September, 7pm Gertrude Elias was an artist, writer and political activist. She campaigned tirelessly against fascism, racism and for colonial freedom. She left her rich archive of prints, book covers, drawings, articles and working papers documenting these struggles to the MML. These will be highlighted in a special display and the launch of a dedicated pamphlet.

Guided Tours of Marx Memorial Library Every Tuesday and Thursday, take part in a guided tour of the library. Visit the office where Lenin worked in exile, and see original banners, posters and ceramics from the history of the labour movement. £5 waged/£3 unwaged.
