Tolpuddle Martyrs Exhibition Exhibition launch at Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival, 14-16 July 2017 Tolpuddle Martyrs Museum, Dorchester, 16 July-4 September Marx Memorial Library, London, 5 September-15 October Additional tour dates to be announced… In 1834 James Brine, James Hammett, George Loveless, James Loveless, Thomas Standfield and John Standfield were arrested, put on trial and sentenced to seven years’ penal servitude in Australia. Their crime was to form a trade union in the small Dorset town of Tolpuddle. This new exhibition looks at the martyrs themselves, the wave of anger that swept across the

country following their conviction and how their story has inspired workers’ struggles for trade union rights ever since. It also draws on a unique collection of contemporary newspapers held at the Marx Memorial Library that will now be available online having been conserved and digitised thanks to sponsorship from the British and Australian labour movements.
