DAYBREAK
Daybreak has always been my favorite time of day – mostly for the fact that I almost never got to see it. For me, it’s a rare treat. Those awake during that time are in sync with the earth. These people can better seize the day, and I wanted to turn this into inspiration for everyone.

DAYBREAK AS ACTIVEWEAR INITIAL 2 WEEK PROJECT As a viscom project, I developed Daybreak as an activewear brand. A lot of people up this early are usually going for a run or a morning workout before getting ready for work. These clothes were to visually show their bodies waking up with the world. As the runners’ bodies heat up, the clothes would change color to reveal a ‘sunrise’ on their bodies, as they themselves watched the sun rise.

DAYBREAKER VS DAYBROKEN KEY INSIGHT 01 At some point in the process, I realized that those who wake up that early don’t need so much help with it. They are the daybreakers, the morning people who can seize the day. I overlooked the daybroken. The daybroken are those that have a hard time waking up early. They may be night owls, suffer from sleep inertia, mild insomnia, etc. They don’t get the chance to ‘seize the day’ and start their morning early and fresh. Their mornings are rushed, as they try their best to catch up with the world.

WHY PEOPLE FEEL TIRED
SLEEP INERTIA | According to the National Sleep Foundation, sleep inertia is defined as the feeling of grogginess and disorientation that can come with awakening from a deep sleep. It can last from a few minutes to half an hour. Sleep inertia can get in the way of those who need to function immediately after waking up. The longer sleep inertia lasts, the longer it takes to get ready and go in the mornings.
TORN FROM DEEP SLEEP | The best time to wake up is when you’re in stage 1 of sleep (light sleep) because it is easiest. When woken up at stages 2-5 (5 being REM), it is much more difficult to get up, and it feels terrible. It does not set a good tone to start the day.
FAR TOO BUSY | Our society is so busy that even into the night, our bodies are ready to go. Add all the blue light we stare at to the equation and it’s impossible to fall asleep. Many are still in the habit of doing things right before going to bed. When we try to sleep without winding down, we feel anxious, have a harder time falling asleep, and getting quality sleep.
DEHYDRATION | A lot of times, feeling sleepy during the day is as simple as not drinking enough water.
HUNGER | Our bodies get energy from 2 things: sleeping enough, and eating enough. During the day, we may feel sleepy because our bodies have run out of energy, and we haven’t fed it yet.

BENEFITS OF GOOD SLEEP
TIME TO SLEEP IN | Those that love to sleep value those extra minutes to sleep in. A good night’s sleep improves alertness right when you wake up, meaning that your morning routine is sped up. What used to take an hour may take half an hour, which means that extra half hour can be used to sleep.
ALERTNESS | A good night’s sleep means alertness throughout the day. That means paying attention to small details, being a better driver in rush hour, remembering that flash drive you needed to bring today.
CONTROLLED DIET | A tired body will either crave sleep or food. When a body lacks sleep, it craves junk foods. Consistent good sleep means that those cravings are curbed, and not controlling you when you choose your meals for the day.
PRODUCTIVITY | A good night’s sleep offers you the energy to be more productive during the day. If you’re not feeling sluggish or groggy, you aren’t going to drag your tasks out. You’re thinking faster, and will make less mistakes
BETTER MOOD | Sleeping well means overall a better mood. A better mood and tone for the day can do a lot.

DEMOGRAPHIC
THE DAYBROKEN This project targets the daybroken people. Those that can’t seem to wake up for whatever reason. Some of these reasons including: A bad night’s sleep Being torn from REM Sleep inertia Other reasons a person might feel tired is dehydration, and hunger. When people are busy, they sometimes forget to take care of these basic needs, and as a result, they feel tired.

DAYTIME ALERTNESS
INITIAL IDEATION My first thoughts were to increase alertness during the day by. The main way to do that is increase sleep quality at night. In addition, being fed at the right time and staying hydrated are also key factors in feeling consistently alert throughout the day. My first concept was a system of products that monitored the user’s body throughout the day. It would track sleep, stress, hunger, etc through sensors in the products. These products would notify the user when they should eat and drink (before it starts to affect their mood and alertness), but more importantly, wake them up properly in the mornings

https://www.nigms.nih.gov/education/PublishingImages/circadian_rhythm
CIRCADIAN RHYTHM KEY INSIGHT 02 While referring back to research, I found that a person’s circadian rhythm controls how and when they wake up. Circadian rhythm is reset every day from exposure to light. Exposure to natural, white light for a certain period of time (20-30min) in the morning – even through the eyelids – let’s the brain know that it is morning, and that you should wake up. This is how diurnal animals keep in time with day and night without clocks. It is how the human species had done it before we got used to buildings and artificial light. I realized here that it is that window in which a person’s body wakes up that affects how well they use the sleep they got throughout the day.

THE WAKE UP MOMENT
FINAL CONCEPT After the realization that waking-up correctly helps a person optimize their day, I readjusted the products and system to create the best possible wakeup situation. Realizing the technology may not yet exist for all this, I projected this product to exist in 10 years.

THE DAYBREAK SYSTEM FINALIZED CONCEPT The Daybreak system is a set of interconnected products that live in your home. They monitor your sleeping environment, as well as your own brainwaves, heart rate, breathing, sweat and sweat content. It’s also tapped into your devices for time (of day and of year), and other information about your life. The pillow, as a central device of this system, gathers and synthesizes the information. It uses all the information it gathers to find the perfect moment to wake you up through self-illumination.

FITBIT | ACTIVITY TRACKER
TRACKING YOUR INFORMATION Today, fitbit is able to track steps, elevation, heart rate, with the sensors in its products. It collects information, and after synthesizing with each other (e.g. heartrate with movements) it will determine how much you’ve walked, exercised etc. Today the product can track sleep as well, noting movement, lack thereof, and time of night. Activity trackers are placed inside the shirt, under the arms, and on the chest. A simpler movement tracker is placed in the pillow.

NEST
CONNECTED TO THE HOME Nest is a good example of a set of products meant to be implemented inside the home. The thermostat is used to regulate temperature, but also knows when to change the temperature based on what you’re doing, or whether or not the user is still there. It’s a smart system that learns users habits and slowly becomes integrated and unnoticed in their daily lives The Daybreak pillow will act as the home device, storing all the gathered information to learn about you.

USC BRAIN SENSOR RESEARCH
MONITORING BRAINWAVES UCSD researchers have developed a wireless, non-contact EEG/ECG electrodes for body sensing networks. They can monitor and record accurate brainwaves and heart activity without contact, and through fabric or insulation. Currently, they are built on standard circuit boards. It processes the information on the circuit board, and sends it to another device for information storage. These non-contact EEG’s are spread throughout the pillow, and connected to a flexible circuit board hidden inside the Daybreak tag.

PROJECT JACQUARD GOOGLE X LEVI’S
WOVEN PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARDS In Project Jacquard, Google and Levi’s explored weaving touch and gesture interactivity into textiles on an industrial level. They used Jacquard conductive yarn, which are being used in products today. Any other electronics are machined to be as indetectable as possible and then woven into the circuit, and the soft good. In the same sense, any wiring and that Daybreak needs can be done in jacquard, and other parts can be machined to be hidden and indetectable.

BENEFITS OF THE DAYBREAK SYSTEM
TIME TO SLEEP IN | By waking up feeling more alert and can function normally, the user can afford more time to sleep in during the mornings.
ALERTNESS | Waking up well allows the user to get their day started quicker, and be able to think and react faster to their daily tasks.
GOOD MOOD | A bad mood accompanies grogginess and sleep inertia. When the user can pull themselves out of the grasp of sleep faster, they feel more alert and will be in an all around better mood.
PRODUCTIVITY | Being able to optimize on the sleep the user got means that they can direct that energy to being more productive during the day.
OPPORTUNITIES | Sleep is the basis of every day function. Sleeping well and waking well leads to better moods and increased productivity. When people can get things done faster and better, they can put their free time to better use, and create more opportunities for themselves - to relax, to work more, to learn more.

FINAL LOGO
The logo was designed to feel simple, open and fresh. It feels like how the moment you wake up should feel. It’s a breath of fresh air, a moment of clarity. The taglin, ‘Rise as the sun’ is meant to inspire the daybroken to get out of bed and start the day with the world. The moment the sun lights the horizon is when the day starts, so why waste a second?
