PROMPT

SPONSORED BY SABIC Sabic is a plastics company that provides parts to the automotive industry. Because of the nature of plastic, they are able to create shapes and forms that metal can’t make. They prompted us to create a vehicle for Generation Alpha, after projecting what the future looks like in 2030, and how plastics innovation would have evolved.

RESEARCH TAKEAWAYS

2030 Information is easily accessible and abundant. It’s unfiltered for Alphas to absorb and create their own opinions and perspectives.

The world is far more affluent than it is now, including third world countries. The growing wealth is evident now; As it gets more expensive to manufacture goods in China, companies move to countries such as India and Thailand to cut costs.

Gen Alpha will be in their mid 20’s by this time, and developed and learned visually and kinesthetically.

Alphas will likely be switching jobs and careers more often, due to their creativity changing the way businesses operate, and the way employers hire and keep employees.

Screens are main forms of communication. It allows more flexibility in terms of scheduling meetings with others. The downside is that Alphas will only have physical interactions with their closest friends and family. They will feel better about spending more time alone because they can connect (and are comfortable with) connecting through screen time.

It is likely that Alphas will be working and living at the same time to feed their creativity and have an outlet for it. They could be taking frequent breaks, or even working while travelling.

If Alphas had an archetype, it would be the explorer. The constant flow of information creates an environment of constant absorbing and learning. The more affluent world allows them to explore their own cities, landmarks, historical sights, as well as other countries, further expanding their knowledge.

ALPHA IN 2030

Because of their access to information and education, Alphas will be lifelong learners. The archetype of this generation would be explorers, with a natural curitosity, and clever resourcefulness. Alphas are similar to today’s travel blogger. They need a space that accomodates both travel and work, as one is tied to the other.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

INITIAL IDEATION

ALL ABOUT THE USER The first idea was to have an all-consuming experience for the user. The idea was to creat a comfortable environment, and a large viewing area. Whether they wanted to watch a movie, search for information, chat with friends online, this would be the best way to do that. It’s an area that’s all to themselves, an office and play space wherever they go. But this idea didn’t seem expansive enough for Gen Alpha – in some ways it was still limiting.

INITIAL IDEATION

THE BACKPACKER This was meant to be the ultimate backpacker’s experience. However, the more I thought about this idea, the more it seemed like a glorified tent. While it allowed them to explore, it still felt limiting in some ways.

23

INITIAL IDEATION

THE CLUBHOUSE This next idea was to provide a clubhouse for the user and his closest friends. While most of Gen alpha would spend time with friends and family online, sometimes face-to-face time is necessary and far more valuable in developing strong bonds. While this had its interesting points, it seemed to stray from the core of what Gen Alpha is.

INITIAL IDEATION

GALOPAGOS FINCHES This concept was meant to create an environment that allowed Gen Alpha to grow as fast and as much as they desired. While the Galopagos Islands is a place where various environmental factors forced finches to evolve quickly and differently, the Finch concept vehicle provides everything an Alpha needs to evolve as they wish.

SPACE FOR WORK NEED 01 The first things Gen Alpha needs in their space is a place to access and share information. This is their workspace to research, create, and produce. It’s likely that they’ll be travelling while working, so having a constant space for work is essential.

STORAGE FOR ACTIVITIES NEED 02 Alphas will likely be interested in a lot of different activities. Whether it’s for research, fun, or just to feed their curiosity, they’ll need spaces to store some equipment they have for their many activities. Aside from that, they may need space to store a few sets of clothes in case they don’t make it home for a few days.

PLACE TO SLEEP NEED 03 In the case that inspiration takes Alphas away from home for the night, they need a place to sleep. Because this is something they may or may not need all the time, this sleep space should be something they can put away and take out as needed.

LAYERS - TOPOGRAPHICAL MAP SUDDEN INSPIRATION The key sketch is inspired by a topographical map. The layers upon layers of land is a visual representation of what Alphas feel there is to discover and learn in the world. The layers also provide function as it divides and organizes their equipment and things.

INSIGHT

CONFINEMENT The last thing Alphas need is to be confined. Because expanding their world matters to them, putting them in a small box is restrictive to say the least. To help open up the space, Sabic will use their innovative plastic to create panels that can change its opacity to the taste of the user. When they need, it can be a completely opaque wall. At other times of the day, it can be a window. This function also affords the interior some other benefits.

SUNRISE

In the morning as the sun rises, the frost layer will turn different levels of semi-opaque. This will catch the morning light, and wake the user up with a soft glow.
