NEW BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUP Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital is pleased to announce a new monthly support group for breast cancer survivors. The next support group will be Tuesday, November 13 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. at the Cancer Center (1203 S. Tyler Street, Covington). It can be hard to talk about how it feels to have cancer and how to manage the many emotions that accompany the diagnosis. Talking with others in a supportive environment is an effective way to manage these feelings and learn positive coping strategies. This free support group will be facilitated by Melinda Breaux, a Licensed Professional Counselor and breast cancer survivor. The support group is open to anyone currently receiving treatment or who has completed treatment for breast cancer. Everyone is invited regardless of where they received treatment. Pet Partners Fridays (Nov. 23, Dec. 7 & 21), 9:30 a.m.

Local pet therapy groups visit patients and visitors at the Cancer Center on a regular basis. The goal is to promote health and a sense of well-being through positive interactions between people and animals. All pet therapy teams have completed behavior evaluations and training, and animals have up-to-date vaccinations.

Cancer Center to Implement Pillars4Life Program In February 2013, Licensed Clinical Social Worker Jane Freudenberger will facilitate a 10-session virtual training program called Pillars4Life: Thriving in the Face of Cancer. Patients, caregivers, and survivors will come together via telephone or internet video conference to be guided through a 10-week coping skills training course. Each session will last one hour and fifteen minutes and is a highly structured, solution-focused program that teaches individuals concrete tools for living fully in the presence of illness and to empower them to become proactive in navigating the cancer journey. Sessions are limited to 12 participants for the entire course, which will be repeated four times during the year.
