Annual Giving from Community to Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Breaks Record The community made gifts totaling $697,218 to Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center during the Center’s 2004 Annual Giving Campaign. Exceeding the campaign goal, 2004 giving represents an increase of 16 percent over 2003 and sets a new annual giving record for the Center. Gifts from the community help fund the C.A.R.E. Network which was established to reduce cancer incidence and mortality in southeast Louisiana and to improve the quality of life for those affected by cancer. Annual giving also helps the Center provide cancer care for all, regardless of ability to pay.

Early in the year, campaign leaders set an ambitious goal of $685,000 despite the fact that the Center was concurrently launching a capital campaign with a $2 million goal. Though a successful capital campaign was critical to fund TomoTherapy and the academic research partnership with LSU, the Annual Giving Campaign Cabinet recognized that the Center’s C.A.R.E. Network depends on annual support to expand its reach to patients and the community.

Ironically, as the campaign kicked off, Peters received his own cancer diagnosis. “One in three people in our state will receive a diagnosis of cancer during their lifetime. For men, it is one out of every two,” said Peters. “The statistic became a reality for me in May of 2004 when I found out I had prostate cancer. Because of early detection and access to quality health care, I am now cancer free. Some of our neighbors are not so fortunate.”

Peters applauded the C.A.R.E. Network’s early detection platform and acknowledged its critical, lifesaving role in the fight against cancer, “What if I didn’t know what a screening was and that I needed one?” he questioned.

Mary Bird Perkins Establishes Foundation On Tuesday, November 30, 2004, at its last quarterly meeting, the Board of Directors of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center approved the establishment of the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Foundation to manage and oversee the growth of the endowment.

“The Board believes that the creation of a separate ‘entity’ will greatly enhance its ability to provide for the future prosperity of the Center, building long-term financial security that will help the Center continue the important work it is doing to positively impact the lives of cancer patients and their loved ones for many decades to come,” said J.H. “Jay” Campbell, Jr., chairman, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Board of Directors.

In 1995, the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Board of Trust for Endowment and Investment was created to build a permanent endowment for Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. Since 1998, the endowment has grown from virtually nothing to its present holdings of over $1.85 million. The grand total, counting expectancies, currently stands at approximately $2.8 million.

The Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Foundation was chartered January 1, 2005.

Contributions and/or planned gifts for the endowment may be made to this entity beginning immediately. Mary Bird Perkins will transfer the balance of the current boarddesignated “Endowment Fund” into the Foundation. The Foundation – a 501(c)(3) organization and a wholly owned subsidiary of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center – will be overseen by a newly created Board of Directors comprised of no fewer than six, and no more than nine individuals, who will be responsible for overseeing the investment, management and growth of the endowment.

The initial Nominating Committee for this new Board will consist of the current and the immediate past two chairmen of the Board of Trust for Endowment and Investment.

Todd Stevens, president and CEO On January 18th, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center hosted a celebration to thank the many generous donors who raised over $2 million to bring TomoTherapy and an innovative academic partnership with LSU to southeast Louisiana. Doing so would not have been possible without the groundswell of support from a community committed to saving lives through leading-edge technology, innovative research and compassionate care.

As mentioned elsewhere in this edition of Perkins Perspective, this lifesaving technology was recently referenced in The Wall Street Journal (11/30/04) in an article entitled “Treating Untreatable Cancers,” which highlighted new techniques that are allowing doctors to treat previously untreatable cancers-offering new hope to cancer patients. TomoTherapy, currently only available at 20 places in the United States, was one of the techniques highlighted. Mary Bird Perkins began treating patients with TomoTherapy in January 2005. While TomoTherapy is also available in Shreveport, outside of Louisiana patients would have to travel as far as Houston, Texas or Tallahassee, Florida to find this treatment.

In addition, the Center was one of a few sites selected to serve as a Center of Excellence for TomoTherapy-related research. This will be done through the joint venture between Mary Bird Perkins and the LSU Department of Physics and Astronomy, which will open up vital new areas of research. On behalf of the untold numbers of cancer patients who will benefit from this technology, the Center thanks you.

Another community fund-raising endeavor essential to the mission of the Center is the 15-year old annual golf tournament. This year’s Sprint Open presented by Associated Food Stores and LEMIC Insurance Company, includes the city’s only professional tournament – the Tight Lies Tour from April 14-17. This is the third consecutive year the Tour is making a stop in Baton Rouge as part of the Center’s golf tournament activities. Please join us at The University Club and show your support for these professionals and watch some amazing golf. Admission to all four days of the pro tournament is free to the public.

Proceeds from sponsorships of the Sprint Open go directly to the Center’s C.A.R.E. Network of patient services and community outreach programs, ensuring that the Center is constantly providing critical services to meet the many needs of cancer patients and the general public.

Capital Campaign Continued...

TomoTherapy is a new radiation system that combines treatment planning, patient positioning and treatment delivery to treat a wide variety of cancers. It precisely treats small or very large areas of the body, as well as multiple areas of the body in a single integrated fashion. TomoTherapy accurately delivers the planned dose to the targeted area, minimizing radiation to surrounding healthy tissue. It allows doctors to take a CT scan just before each treatment to verify the position of the treatment area and adjust the patient as necessary.

Mary Bird Perkins was selected by the makers of TomoTherapy to serve as a Center of Excellence, developing new clinical protocols for radiation therapy and advancing research and development of the Hi-Art system. The joint venture between the Center and LSU will open up new areas of vital research and ultimately help cancer patients, not only in Louisiana, but around the world. In addition, a portion of the capital campaign funds were earmarked for an endowed chair in medical physics. This chair will be important not only to the research, but also in elevating the national stature of the LSU graduate physics program.

Kenneth Hogstrom, Ph.D., former director of the graduate medical physics program for the University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and currently Mary Bird Perkins’ chief of physics and director of LSU’s medical physics program, will lead the research effort. “The TomoTherapy system, resulting from community contributions, opens our community to benefit from the latest in image-guided radiation therapy equipment,” said Hogstrom. Citing physicist Albert Einstein who said ‘Imagination is more important than knowledge,’ Hogstrom credited everyone who participated in the campaign for showing their imagination and vision for the future of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.

Community Celebrates Outstanding Campaign The atmosphere was jubilant on the evening of January 18th as generous community members, along with Mary Bird Perkins medical staff, employees, board members and campaign volunteers, gathered at the Center to celebrate the community’s achievement of reaching and exceeding its $2 million goal for the “Whatever It Takes” Capital Campaign, making possible the acquisition of TomoTherapy and the Center’s research partnership with LSU. Campaign leaders lauded these two extraordinary initiatives and applauded the many supporters. “Mary Bird Perkins medical staff, employees, board members and campaign volunteers were the first to be asked to contribute to the fundraising effort and there was 100% participation almost immediately,” said Campaign Cochair John Barton. Co-chair Louis Curet said, “I feel honored and privileged to have the opportunity to help Mary Bird Perkins move to a new level of radiation treatment by raising funds to bring TomoTherapy to this community.”

Chairman of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s Board of Directors, Joseph H. “Jay” Campbell, Jr. noted that this was the Center’s first capital campaign in 14 years and praised the Center’s foresight in moving forward with this effort. Board Member Emeritus, Kevin Reilly, Jr., whose family came forward to make the lead gift of the campaign, shared his feelings about what the equipment and partnership mean in terms of new hope for patients. The Sprint Open: Six Days of Golf-Filled Fun Baton Rouge’s premier golf event – the Sprint Open presented by Associated Food Stores and LEMIC Insurance Company – will take place April 12-17 at The University Club in Baton Rouge and will offer six days of exciting activities for all ages. The highlight of the tournament includes the city’s only professional golf tournament – the fourday Tight Lies Tour.

“The Center is excited to welcome Sprint as the new title sponsor of this year’s tournament,” said Todd Stevens, president and CEO, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. “By increasing their commitment from sponsorship of The Taste of Louisiana last year to sponsorship of the entire tournament this year, Sprint has clearly shown its dedication to helping win the fight against cancer in southeast Louisiana.”

Sprint’s community dedication is evident. “This is a great fit for us – a high profile event for a great cause,” said Brad Supple, marketing director for Gulf Coast Wireless, a local affiliate of Sprint who serves as this year’s vicechair of the Golf Organizing Committee. “We try to keep our donations in the community. It’s our way of giving back.”

The fun begins on Tuesday, April 12th when The First Tee of Louisiana presents The Taste of Louisiana. This event features award winning cuisine by more than a dozen area restaurants and caterers, as well as live and silent auctions showcasing many fantastic items for the enjoyment of tournament sponsors and their guests.

Wednesday, April 13th, starts the WAFB Pro-Am, benefiting Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. The Pro-Am is a four-man shamble format with three amateur golfers and a Tight Lies Tour pro per team. There will also be hole and putting contests for which prizes will be awarded.

On Thursday, April 14th, professional tournament play will begin for the Tight Lies pros. The pro tournament starts Thursday and ends Sunday. The field will be cut on Friday at the conclusion of the second round. This year’s event purse will be $150,000 with a first prize of $20,000. The Baton Rouge tournament will be the 3rd stop on the Tight Lies Tour. Admission to all four days of the pro tournament is free to the public.

There is also a chance for kids ages 615 to meet and play with professional golfers at the free junior golf clinic sponsored by Baton Rouge Coca-Cola on Saturday, April 16. The clinic, which is open to the public, will be held at The University Club driving range after the third round of play at approximately 3:00 p.m.

The Mary Bird Perkins Golf Tournament has raised over $1 million over the last 15 years – funds that go to the C.A.R.E. Network and are invested in the community in the form of free cancer early detection screenings and prevention programs, professional and community education, clinical research, and indigent patient care.

“With events like this, we’re helping raise money to fight back,” said Supple, marketing director, Gulf Coast Wireless, a local affiliate of Sprint. “Everybody has family and friends affected by cancer.”

ExxonMobil Foundation Partners With Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center to Provide Community Cancer Screenings $100K Grant Supports Funding of Mobile Screening Clinic The ExxonMobil Foundation has awarded Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center a $100,000 grant to support the purchase of a mobile screening clinic. This mobile clinic will allow the Center to expand the availability of free community cancer screenings dramatically for the 1.1 million residents of its southeast Louisiana service area and beyond.

“A mobile screening clinic will allow us to place special emphasis on serving the rural and working poor for whom the need is greatest,” said Lori McCallum, executive director, Mary Bird Perkins C.A.R.E. Network, which oversees such community outreaches.

Wal-Mart Holiday Grant Supports Center Programs

Volunteer Owen Cope:

A Man for All Reasons Owen Cope is a man who likes getting involved. He remembers always being that way. “Growing up in Jamaica I was in the Boy Scouts, the school choir and the youth club. I also played soccer and was an altar boy,” Cope recalled. Today, as a customer service manager for Entergy in West Baton Rouge, Iberville and Pointe Coupee parishes, Cope is active in many organizations.

“I have the Entergy Corporation to thank for that,” Cope said. “Customer service managers are encouraged to participate in the community. They allow me the time to get involved.”

Ena Warner, personnel manager, Siegen Lane Wal-Mart, Baton Rouge, presents a Holiday Grant in the amount of $5,000 to Lynn Weill, vice president for development, Mary Bird Perkins. During the holiday season, the Holiday Grant supports local organizations and causes that are important to Wal-Mart customers and associates.

Scott Foundation Grant Spreads Holiday Cheer Due to a grant funded by the Scott Foundation of Monroe, Louisiana in the last quarter of 2004, the holidays were much brighter for many of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s neediest families.

“So many families impacted by cancer just don’t have the resources to have Christmas,” said Mary Livingston, director of social services, Mary Bird Perkins. In 2004, with the help of the Scott Foundation, the Center was able to ensure that those families received the makings for Christmas dinners and that the children had gifts to open on Christmas morning.

This is the second time in three years that the Scott Foundation stepped forward to help with this endeavor.

Cope makes it clear that he’s definitely not one who joins organizations for the sake of joining, “I want to make a change, make things better. I am a people person, but I only surround myself with positive people. I have no time for anything negative.”

Cope came to the United States to study electrical engineering at Chicago Technical College. Upon graduation, he returned to Jamaica for five years before moving to New Orleans in 1976 to work for NOPSI (New Orleans Public Service, Inc.), a company later purchased by Entergy. When Entergy acquired Gulf States Utilities, Cope was transferred to the Baton Rouge area.

“It was then that I met Owen,” said Ann Wilkinson, annual giving program director, Mary Bird Perkins. “I was chairman of the West Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce Board and as such was asked to introduce Owen to the West Bank communities.” Subsequently, Cope has served as chairman of the chamber boards for West Baton Rouge and Iberville parishes, as well as president of both the Port Allen Rotary and Family Services. “He is an exemplary community leader and outstanding volunteer,” said Wilkinson.

“I really didn’t know much about Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center when I was asked to join the Annual Giving Campaign, but I just couldn’t say no to Ann,” said Cope. “I came on as vice chair of the industry division under Chairman Judy Nordgren and later moved into her position when she relocated to Washington D.C.” That was in 2002. Cope has continued to serve as industry division chair in both 2003 and 2004. Industry giving has exceeded $100,000 in each year of Cope’s tenure.

“Any success I have had is because of the Mary Bird Perkins staff,” declared Cope. “They are the experts on what they know – cancer. They talk about what they know and then I do what I’m good at – asking for financial support. It’s not hard to ask if you have something good to sell and Mary Bird Perkins sells itself.”

Cope is a member of 100 Black Men; serves as treasurer of the board of Family Services of Greater Baton Rouge; is president of the Board of Career Builders; and is vice president of the Board of Young Entrepreneurs Succeeding (YES).

“I used to worry about what I’ll do when I have to retire,” said Cope, “but I know I’ll always be involved. I’m not going to rest until they lay me out.”

A free prostate cancer screening was held at the Bogalusa Wal-Mart on Saturday, November 6, 2004. The screening, which included a PSA blood test and an examination of the prostate gland by a physician, was for men of appropriate age* who did not have access to routine health care or had not been screened in the past 12 months.

This free community cancer screening was co-sponsored by the C.A.R.E. Network of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, St. Tammany Parish Hospital and the Rich Mauti Cancer Fund. Mauti, a former football player with the New Orleans Saints, founded the Rich Mauti Cancer Fund in honor of his father who died of lung cancer in 1979. Mauti made an appearance at the screening to see the integral role the Rich Mauti mobile medical clinic plays in community cancer screenings.

“Early detection of cancer can help save lives,” said Mauti. “The point of a screening is to evaluate your current health status and to educate people about being aware of the early signs and symptoms of cancer. The facts are, the earlier cancer is detected, the better the chances of beating this dreaded disease.” * Men 50+ should have a PSA blood test and a digital rectal exam annually. Men with a strong family history of prostate cancer or African-American men should begin at age 45.

Breast Screening Collaboration Meeting Community Needs In partnership with Woman’s Hospital and ENCOREplus, the Mary Bird Perkins C.A.R.E. Network has been conducting breast cancer screenings for uninsured women since October 2002. “We were picking and choosing places as opportunities arose,” said Lori McCallum, executive director, C.A.R.E. Network. “We always did this with an eye for a location that would best reach medically under-served women and allow us to offer this service on a regular basis.”

With that in mind, members of the partnership met with Dr. Fred Cerise, then medical director of Earl K. Long (EKL), to ask about the availability of the EKL clinic within the Leo S. Butler Community Center on East Washington Street in Baton Rouge. Cerise was extremely supportive of the idea to utilize the clinic one day a month for a breast screening outreach. Thus, monthly breast cancer screenings began at the Leo S. Butler Center in September 2003. Offered on the third

Friday of every month from 1:00 p.m. until 4.30 p.m., free clinical breast exams are performed by a physician or nurse practitioner for women 18 and older. Screening mammograms are available for women 40 and older who have not had a mammogram in the past 12 months. The mammograms are free for women without insurance.

When Cerise left his position at EKL to become Secretary of the Department of Health and Hospitals, the acting administrators at EKL invited the partnership to replicate its model at the new Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center (LSUHSC) Mid City clinic on North Foster Drive. “We’re always looking for more locations,” said McCallum. “This was a different part of town where the need was just as great.” Subsequently, August saw the beginning of Mid City Clinic screenings offered the second Tuesday of every month from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the LSU clinic at 1401 N. Foster Drive in Baton Rouge.

“I truly expected a decline at Leo Butler when we opened Mid City,” said McCallum, “but we’re serving increasing numbers of women at both locations.”

“This model with Earl K. Long is a great demonstration of what public/private partnerships can accomplish,” said Michael Butler, M.D., chief medical officer of the LSUHSC Health Care Services Division. “A significant number of uninsured women are getting mammograms in their local communities through this collaboration.

Agencies that get more people screened are to be applauded and supported.”

Well-Attended January Colorectal Screening Erin Moller, outreach coordinator, C.A.R.E. Network, educates screening participants who picked up take-home colorectal cancer screening kits. Held in the lobby of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s Baton Rouge location, the screening was so well-attended that the C.A.R.E. Network has added a colorectal cancer screening at the Baton Rouge Center every month for the rest of the year, in addition to all other regularly scheduled screenings.

In 2004, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s C.A.R.E. Network screened a total of 3,185 people at 53 free community cancer screenings. In addition, education was provided to 5,518 people, which included 510 patients, 1283 medical professionals and 3,725 of the general public at community events.

Tangipahoa Parish Screening Held in Amite A recent breast cancer screening held at the Tangipahoa Parish Health Unit in Amite on Saturday, January 22, drew women from the surrounding communities of Kentwood, Raceland and Livingston. It was the first time Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s C.A.R.E. Network and its collaborators held a screening in Amite. A majority of the women at the screening had not had a mammogram in three years or more.

The C.A.R.E. Network was already interested in increasing screening services in this area of the state, having conducted a breast screening in Hammond in October, 2004 which resulted in seven women being referred for further testing. The C.A.R.E. Network will be offering free quarterly breast screenings during 2005, alternating between the Tangipahoa Parish Health Units in Hammond and Amite.

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Board Member Hillar C. Moore, Jr. recently presented the Center with a check for the Endowment from the sale of his life insurable interest. With the counsel of Bob Greer and Jonathan Greer, these funds were raised through a unique strategy that uses an asset that is frequently not recognized or goes unused. That asset is an individual’s insurable interest, which is determined by an individual’s estimated net worth at life expectancy.

For Moore, this strategy meant giving a gift to Mary Bird Perkins’ Endowment by using an asset that he never realized he had available to him. “I did not realize that the insurability of my life was such a valuable asset,” said Moore. “It allowed me to make a nice gift today to an organization that means so much to me and it did not take anything away from me or my family.”

Introduction to Hospice

Cancer Survivors Support Group of Pointe Coupée Cancer survivors, family and friends gather to provide support, share experiences and discuss successful coping techniques. Meetings take place the first Friday of the month at 10 a.m. at Expresso Etc. in New Roads. Call Patricia Watson at (225) 627-3991 for more information.

Candlelighters This group is for children with cancer and their families. The program includes monthly fun activities in a supportive atmosphere, a summer day camp, and annual holiday party, tutoring, as well as individual and/or family counseling.

Kids Kare This group is to help parents help their children cope when a parent is diagnosed with cancer.

Monthly activities provide time for children to have fun and for parents to connect and gain support from other parents dealing with similar issues. Make Today Count: Baton Rouge, Lutcher, St. Francisville Chapters Through speakers, social gatherings, discussion of mutual concerns and sharing of information, Make Today Count offers support and education for cancer patients, family and friends. The Baton Rouge chapter meets at noon on the fourth Thursday of each month at Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge for a guest speaker’s presentation followed by a support group. The Lutcher chapter meets at 5 p.m. the first Thursday of the month at the Lutcher Library, and the St. Francisville chapter meets at 2 p.m. the first Wednesday of the month at the St. Francisville Town Hall. New Voice Support Group

This support group for adults who have been diagnosed with cancer and are raising young children meets the first Friday of every month at noon at Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge.

This support group is designed to encourage and support those who have had a laryngectomy (surgical removal of the larynx, or voice box) and to assist with physical, social and emotional rehabilitation. Look Good...Feel Better

Ostomy Support Group

Free to anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one, this group, facilitated by a trained hospice professional, meets every Thursday at noon at the Hospice of Baton Rouge office at 9063 Siegen Lane. Contact Hospice of Baton Rouge at (225) 767-HOPE [4673] for more information.

A program in which trained volunteer cosmetologists help female cancer patients deal with the side effects of treatment by teaching them beauty techniques to enhance their appearance and self-image. Participants are given a complimentary box of make-up and shown how to wear wigs and turbans. Programs are offered on Mondays at facilities across Baton Rouge.

This group assists with the rehabilitation of ostomy patients through information, educational material and emotional support. The Hope Chests

Lymphedema Prevention Clinic

Organized by patients and facilitated by a nurse practitioner, this program’s purpose is to inform, encourage and meet the needs of breast cancer patients and their families. Speakers offer educational information on group-selected topics and emotional support is offered through group interaction and exercises that promote ventilation of feelings and fears. The group meets at Ochsner Clinic the first Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the fourth floor lobby. Call Ochsner Clinic of Baton Rouge at (225) 761-5488 for more information.

HOPE (Bereavement Support Group)

I Can Cope This series of sessions is for people with cancer, their families, and their friends, providing information about cancer diagnosis, treatment, and symptom management, and practical help in coping with some of the emotional issues that can go along with a cancer diagnosis. Reach to Recovery This patient visitation program is for women who have had breast surgery related to cancer. Visitors are trained volunteers who have recovered from similar surgery. Sisters Supporting Sisters Lymphoma Support Group For patients with Hodgkin’s disease and nonHodgkin’s lymphoma, their families and friends, this support group meets at noon on the last Friday of every month at Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge. A support group for African-American breast cancer survivors, this organization provides a strong support base and emotional safe-haven for survivors to express fears, frustrations, and concerns. Man to Man Support Group This group offers education and mutual support for prostate cancer survivors as well as those currently undergoing treatment.
