IN YOUR COMMUNITY Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Opens in Gonzales Partnering with St. Elizabeth Hospital for Expanded Cancer Care

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, in partnership with St. Elizabeth Hospital, officially opened the doors to its new Gonzales facility earlier this year. Now, citizens of Ascension Parish and surrounding areas have more convenient access to a broader range of cancer services from community outreach to advanced treatment.

Dee LeJeune CEO, St. Elizabeth Hospital The new treatment facility features state-of-the-art technology, including a high-energy linear accelerator utilizing advanced image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT); intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT); state-of-the-art imaging using positron emission tomography and computed tomography (PET/CT); sophisticated treatment planning, as well as physics and dosimetry quality assurance instrumentation and software.

The first of MBP’s $20 million dollar investment in Elekta Synergy® digital linear accelerator technology was installed in the new facility. At the center, MBP can treat many types of cancer with the Elekta Synergy, from simple to the most complex cases. Elekta Synergy is a fully digital linear accelerator with an integrated 3D imaging system that can image the site receiving radiation immediately before treatment to ensure the highest accuracy possible. This allows for a reduction in the volume of healthy tissue affected by the radiation dosage.

The radiation oncologists at the new facility include two members of the ten-member Southeast Louisiana Radiation Oncology Group (SLROG) practicing exclusively at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center locations. This group of physicians has over 200 years of combined experience. In addition, the facility is supported by MBP’s medical physics and dosimetry teams, two radiation therapists, two PET/CT technologists, financial counselor, dietitian and social worker.

“It is an honor to have the opportunity to work with St. Elizabeth, community physicians and residents in the greater Ascension area to support cancer care. This partnership brings to the citizens of this area state-of-the-art technology, expanded cancer services and outreach programs – from early detection to survivorship,” said Todd Stevens, President and CEO, Mary Bird Perkins.

In recognition of National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March, MBP and St. Elizabeth Hospital partnered to offer a colorectal screening on March 14 at the new facility. Colorectal screening kits were distributed to men and women age 50 and older who had not been screened for colorectal cancer in the past twelve months.

“We look forward to continue working with St. Elizabeth to share the message of early detection,” said Renea Duffin, vice president of cancer programs, MBP. “Going straight to the community to help people better understand how to reduce their risk for cancer and to encourage people to get screened helps save lives.”

The vision of Mary Bird Perkins’ founders – to provide local access to high-quality cancer care – is being realized in communities across southeast Louisiana as the Center, through collaborative partnerships with community hospitals and physicians, expands its mission across an entire region to touch more and more lives. Now serving an 18-parish region, Mary Bird Perkins operates cancer programs with four partner hospitals: Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge; St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington; Terrebonne General Medical Center in Houma; and St. Elizabeth Hospital in Gonzales, in addition to a treatment center in Hammond, Louisiana.

Our newest center in Gonzales, Louisiana, opened in early 2009, allowing Mary Bird Perkins the privilege of serving the citizens of Ascension Parish and the surrounding region. We are thrilled to be working with St. Elizabeth Hospital to ensure that patients in that area now have more convenient access to a broader range of cancer services, from community outreach to advanced treatment and survivorship.

Your Cancer Fingerprint Participating in the Future of Personalized Medicine with Total Cancer Care™

The Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins is one of only 18 sites in the country participating in a first-of-its-kind study to individualize cancer treatment. The Cancer Program and H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in Florida have partnered to perform state-of-the-art cancer research called Total Cancer Care™.

Just as every person has a unique fingerprint, every tumor is unique as well. Total Cancer Care™ aims to specialize treatment based on genes that provide a “molecular fingerprint” unique for each tumor, just like the lines on fingertips identify individual people. Cancer can be classified by its site of origin, such as lung, breast, colon and prostate, but there are many different types of these cancers. We now know that individual patients with the same kind of cancer don’t always respond to standard treatment in the same way. This program is working to change that.

This study is creating a new frontier in cancer research in which local cancer patients will have the opportunity to be a part of this groundbreaking study. To date, over 90 patients from the Cancer Program have already signed up to participate, and nationally, the study has the consent of more than 33,000 subjects.

Cancer patients can volunteer to be a part of the study by answering questions about their medical history and giving permission for excess tumor tissue to be donated for cancer research.

Brad Vincent, M.D., principal investigator of the initiative, said “I believe that Total Cancer Care™ represents the future of cancer care. It is essentially a new way of thinking about how cancer is treated in this country, especially when it comes to new and investigational agents.”

Radiation Oncologist Gregory Henkelmann, M.D., a partner of Southeast Louisiana Radiation Oncology Group practicing exclusively at Mary Bird Perkins, was the first physician to refer a Cancer Program patient for tissue banking at H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute. “By combining research efforts across the entire country, we are participating in the future of personalized medicine that will potentially be of great importance for all cancer patients,” he stated.

genes that provide the molecular fingerprint. By studying this fingerprint, scientists are developing new drug therapies personalized for each individual.

“It takes a team approach for this initiative to work,” said Medical Oncologist Judd Patten, M.D., Ph.D., Louisiana Hematology Oncology Associates. “While at the highest level we are partnering with Moffitt Cancer Center, it also takes a team of physicians, radiation and medical oncologists, surgeons and clinical research staff, to name only a few, to make this study a success for the future of cancer care.”

Part of the reason the Cancer Program was selected was because of its affiliation with the National Cancer Institute’s Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP) pilot, which has an emphasis on clinical research.

“Involvement in a major trial such as this one – and selection by a major cancer center such as Moffitt – says a lot about the quality of the Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins.

Donna Bryant, executive director, clinical research program, Mary Bird Perkins, explained “Someday, you or others participating in this research may need drug therapy to treat your disease. Should this occur, we would want to use gene-based technology to try to find the best drug for you. And, if a promising clinical trial or new drug associated with the trial is available that may be of benefit to you, we will request permission to contact you in the future with this information.” Bryant continued, “You may also help others with cancer by participating in this research. It takes thousands of individual participants like you to make Total Cancer Care a success.”

Total Cancer Care™ Patient Contributes Her Unique Fingerprint Mrs. Phyllis N. Crim, one of the Cancer Program’s first participants in the initiative after being diagnosed with breast cancer, was asked about her participation in this exciting new initiative.

Why did you choose to participate?

“Breast cancer has always been a part of my life. It’s definitely in our family. My mother had eight breast tumors throughout her life but passed away due to bone cancer. I have one sister and two daughters. So far, I’ve been the only one to have breast cancer. I wanted to do this for them. I didn’t have anything to lose by letting the surgeon take tissue from my tumor. Whether cancer is inherited or not, I felt like this opportunity allowed me to do my part in the fight against this disease so my sister and daughters won’t have to go through the same battle I did.”

What does having access to this type of initiative mean to you?

“The future. I’m very optimistic. I have grandchildren. I want to be there to see them grow up. I have a lot left to see, and I want to be there every step of the way. Cancer hasn’t beaten me, and I hope through being able to participate in this, it won’t keep beating others.”

Mary Bird Perkins and LSU Plan to Add Proton Therapy

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and the Louisiana State University System (LSU) announced they are engaged in joint planning to develop and implement a proton therapy program in Baton Rouge, adding the latest in radiation therapy technology to serve Louisiana cancer patients. The treatment and research program is expected to open by 2012 on the campus of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.

Proton therapy is a form of radiation therapy that holds tremendous potential in the treatment of certain types of cancer because it allows physicians to deliver higher doses while sparing surrounding healthy tissues and organs. Currently, there are five proton therapy facilities in the United States, all affiliated with universities.

“Improving outcomes for cancer patients while advancing medical research and cancer treatment leverages the academic power of the university and the private resources of Mary Bird Perkins.”

Dr. John Lombardi President of the LSU System Historically, proton therapy has benefited only a small segment of cancer patients, mostly in treating localized, isolated, solid tumors, such as brain, spine, head and neck as well as eye tumors, before they spread to the rest of the body.

Scientists and physicians with the nationally recognized Mary Bird Perkins-LSU Medical Physics Program believe future advances in proton therapy technology will benefit a wider array

of cancer patients. The accredited graduate program, a joint venture of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and the LSU Department of Physics and Astronomy, is one of only 15 such programs in the nation. The partnership takes advantage of Mary Bird Perkins’ clinical team and facilities, treatment planning and dosimetry laboratories, and commitment to patients, as well as LSU’s expertise in imaging and medical physics within LSU’s College of Basic Sciences. This combination of resources improves patient care, provides a rich arena for medical research and provides much-needed manpower in this highly specialized field for Louisiana and the nation.

One of the world’s foremost scholars in charged particle radiation therapy, Dr. Kenneth Hogstrom, chief of physics at Mary Bird Perkins and Dr. Charles M. Smith Chair of Medical Physics at LSU, leads the partnership. Hogstrom is the former department chair of radiation physics and director of the graduate medical physics program at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

“Mary Bird Perkins, because of its partnerships with physicians, Our Lady of the Lake, and the LSU System, is able to operate academic-level radiation therapy treatment programs across Southeast Louisiana, which for over 35 years have been available to all patients regardless of their ability to pay,” said Todd Stevens, president and CEO, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.

“We believe this team’s combined resources of clinical, physics and basic science, and research expertise are ready to guide the implementation of the next, more advanced generation of proton therapy in our region for the benefit of current and future cancer patients in Louisiana.”

The five operating proton therapy programs are located in California, Florida, Indiana, Massachusetts, and Texas. Six more programs are under development in Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington.

What is Proton Therapy?

Proton therapy is an advanced form of radiation therapy that holds tremendous potential in the treatment of certain types of cancer. It allows physicians to deliver higher doses of radiation to the tumor while sparing healthy tissues and vital organs surrounding the site. This treatment of focused proton particles controls the cancer without causing significant damage to tissue beyond the targeted area.

Colon Cancer Team Launches Website

To help educate Louisiana residents about the risks of colorectal cancer, the Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins launched a resource dedicated to the disease – www.coloncancerteam.org.

This was done in conjunction with the development of a new multidisciplinary program solely focused on the comprehensive delivery of state-of-the-art care and colorectal cancer research for colorectal cancer patients.

According to the American Cancer Society, approximately ten percent of all cancer deaths in Louisiana are from colon and rectum cancers. However, it is also one of the most preventable, treatable and beatable cancers. More than 90 percent of colorectal cancers can be cured when caught in their earliest stages. Early detection and education are key.

“We are dedicated to offering colorectal cancer patients a comprehensive team approach to cancer care. From early detection and prevention to treatment and survivorship, a team of physicians and a patient navigator will be there every step of the way. Providing a formal, multidisciplinary approach to colorectal cancer is a national best practice and one that we are excited about providing to cancer patients here in Louisiana.”

The site also provides information on the signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer and lists free upcoming screenings and locations, among other related topics.

A unique offering of this program is the service of a patient navigator. The patient navigator helps coordinate the care of the colorectal patient throughout their treatment, ensure understanding of symptom management and emotionally support both the patient and the family. Another important component to this multidisciplinary initiative is genetics counseling, a service available by physician referral.

This program is a part of the Cancer Program’s participation in the NCI Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP) pilot.

In Baton Rouge 38 years ago a group of community organizers, led by community leader Anna Lipsey and surgeon Jack Rathbone, helped found a community-based organization focused solely on cancer care. An overriding goal was to provide high-quality services to patients regardless of their ability to pay.

Today Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center (MBP) is not only a leader in providing state-of-the-art radiation therapy to communities in southeast Louisiana, it is bringing screenings and early detection programs, education, and research into the communities it serves. Through a series of innovative partnerships, MBP is succeeding in its mission “to improve cancer survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer through expert treatment, compassionate care, early detection, research, and education.” No small feat in a state with such disproportionate cancer mortality rates. Although cancer incidence rates in Louisiana are comparable to national averages, the state has one of the highest death rates from cancer in the country. These rates are largely attributed to the fact that many Louisianans have limited access to prevention, early detection, and treatment services. Simply put, the diagnosis of cancer comes too late. Mary Bird Perkins is working to change that.

Innovative Partnerships Because of the complexity and costliness of providing state-ofthe-art cancer services, Mary Bird Perkins’ cancer-only focus enables it to be a “catalyst and organizer that expands access to multidisciplinary screenings, cancer detection, and diagnosis and treatment programs emphasizing long-term survival and quality of life,” said Todd Stevens, president and CEO of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.

Through innovative partnerships MBP jointly operates two ACoS programs located at St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington and one located in Baton Rouge at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.

recently, this comprehensive cancer program launched a multidisciplinary colorectal cancer initiative with a fulltime RN patient navigator.

In 2008 MBP partnered with Terrebonne General Medical Center and Cancer Care Specialists in Houma to provide access to comprehensive cancer care at Mary Bird Perkins at Terrebonne General Medical Center. The program offers patients care from diagnosis through treatment, and also provides community-based cancer screenings and educational outreach services to the area.

Also in 2008 Woman’s Hospital and MBP partnered to form Woman’s Comprehensive Breast Care program, which offers patients breast care from diagnosis through treatment and survivorship.

MBP operates a radiation treatment facility on the campus of North Oaks Hospital in Hammond. And, in January 2009, MBP opened its fifth location, a new outpatient cancer treatment facility in Gonzales in partnership with St. Elizabeth Hospital.

State-of-the-Art Radiation Therapy Mary Bird Perkins offers leading-edge radiation therapy treatment modalities including intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT); advanced image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) through BrainLAB Novalis, TomoTherapy®, and Elekta Synergy®; stereotactic radiosurgery; adaptive radiotherapy; and 4-D CT tumor localization. Since 1999, MBP has invested nearly $31 million in patient care equipment, technology, and facilities.

Currently MBP radiation therapy staff includes 9 radiation oncologists, 12 FTE medical physicists, 9 medical dosimetrists, 23 radiation therapists, 10 radiation oncology nurses, 4 CT technologists, and 2 nuclear medicine/PET technicians.

Partnering for Progress In 2004 Mary Bird Perkins partnered with Louisiana State University (LSU) to create the MBP-LSU Medical Physics and Health Physics Program. The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Medical Physics Educational Programs, Inc., (CAMPEP), one of only 15 such accredited programs nationwide.

“We have a very strong academic component and we are working hard to grow that component,” said Kenneth Hogstrom, PhD, chief of physics at MBP and the Dr. Charles

The medical physics graduate program, conducted in conjunction with LSU, prepares both master’s-level and doctoral-level medical physicists. “Because of the affiliation with MBP, our main focus is on radiation oncology, although we do some training in imaging,” said Dr. Hogstrom.

“We also conduct research. Currently, we have research grants primarily with industry although we do some basic research with LSU in the field of radiation oncology.” During 2007 alone, MBP invested $800,000 in expanding and supporting both the LSU-MBP academic and research medical physics partnership, as well as its clinical research program.

It is estimated that there is a need for 300 medical physicists annually, approximately double the amount produced by current CAMPEP programs. In an effort to address the need for well-trained medical physicists, in 2014, the American Board of Radiology will require that medical physicists have graduated from or be enrolled in a CAMPEP-accredited residency training program prior to sitting for certification exams from the American Board of Radiology, said Dr. Hogstrom. “This requirement is going to stimulate a faster growth of medical physicist residency training programs, and it will also require graduate programs to align themselves with medical physics residency training programs,” he said. Plans are currently underway for Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center to start a medical physics residency program later this year.

Partnering with the Community In 2002 MBP established its CARE Network outreach and support program. Funded largely through the generosity of the community, its mission is “to reduce the incidence and mortality of cancer in Southeast Louisiana and to improve the quality of life for those impacted by cancer,” said Renea A. Duffin, CARE Network executive director. Since the program’s inception, MBP and its community partners have provided more than 27,000 screenings to the uninsured and underinsured free of charge. In 2006, the CARE Network added the MBP Early Bird mobile medical clinic to its early detection arsenal. Since hitting the road, the Early Bird has

helped provide 8,127 free screenings, serving an 18-parish region. During last year’s national Minority Cancer Awareness Week, the Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins sponsored a family health fair in Baton Rouge to promote increased awareness of the importance of early detection and to improve access to care for the underserved population. The program provided 474 cancer screenings in one day—for breast, prostate, skin, and colorectal cancers. For National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in September, MBP partnered with other organizations to provide 711 free prostate cancer screenings in convenient community locations.

MBP’s CARE Network also provides a range of support services including patient transportation assistance (both van services and gas cards), social work services, breast cancer patient navigation services, dietitian, and oncologic dentist services. All services are provided to patients without charge.

“Partnerships are very critical to the success of our programs,” said Duffin. “In order to reach people, we partner with others that are providing services that complement the services that we bring to the community. The entire CARE Network program has been built around [these strong partnerships].”

Early Bird’s First Trip to Houma a Great Success

“This was the first time Mary Bird Perkins at TGMC was able to offer this service in the Houma region, and we were thrilled with the turnout,” said Charity Gay, outreach coordinator, Mary Bird Perkins (MBP). In Louisiana, colorectal cancer is the 3rd most commonly diagnosed cancer among men and white women. The death rate from this cancer is significantly higher among men in Louisiana than in the rest of the nation, and it’s the 2nd most common cancer diagnosed among black women in our state. Gay added, “In the Bayou region specifically, for white men the incidence rate is significantly higher than the rest of country. Therefore, men and women in Terrebonne Parish are more at risk for colon cancer than their counterparts throughout the state and nation.”

The exact causes of colorectal cancer are unknown. However, there are certain factors that increase an individual’s risk of developing the disease: being age 50 or older; having a personal history of colorectal cancer and/or polyps; having a personal history of inflammatory bowel disease; being a smoker; being obese or physically inactive; having a heavy consumption of alcohol; and eating a diet high in saturated fat or red meat.

Since colon cancer usually does not have symptoms in its early stages, screening becomes an extremely important tool to monitor your health. Colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable if detected early. “We are very excited to be able to bring free cancer screenings and educational information to the Bayou region,” said Renea Duffin, vice president of cancer programs, MBP. “These events enable us to have a positive impact on the community we serve. We look forward to educating this community on cancer and how early detection can improve their quality of life.”

The take-home kit is not a substitute for a colonoscopy. It is just one form of colorectal cancer screening. The gold standard for colorectal cancer screening is the colonoscopy.

Greater Northshore Business and Community Council Formed

2008 was a year marked with many new and exciting initiatives for Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center (MBP). And, among them was the establishment of the Greater Northshore Business and Community Council to serve the Northshore and Florida parishes. The Council is a volunteer-driven group with the mission of advancing Mary Bird Perkins’ life-saving work in patient care and research through advocacy, financial support and leadership. The goal of the Council is to continually increase philanthropic support for MBP and to grow its membership to represent a wide cross section of the local business and philanthropic community. The members of the council were chosen for their leadership and involvement in their community and their commitment to helping increase support for the services the nonprofit Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center provides.

Second Annual Minority Screening Event Attracts Hundreds

I

In recognition of National Minority Cancer Awareness week, the Cancer Program of Our Lady of the Lake and Mary Bird Perkins – with the help of Southern University School of Nursing, Woman’s Hospital, LSUHSC, YWCA ENCOREplus and numerous volunteers – sponsored its second annual health fair for the whole family. The event promoted increased awareness of the importance of early detection among racial and ethnic minority groups, a segment of the population disproportionately affected by cancer. This year, volunteer translators were on hand to assist Spanish and Vietnamese speaking participants.

The goal was to provide as many screenings as possible for breast, prostate, colorectal and skin cancers in addition to screenings for glucose and blood pressure. The overwhelming success of this event was evident in the exceptional results.

Regional Skin Screenings Held in May

In recognition of National Skin Cancer Awareness Month, regional skin screenings were offered throughout the month of May.

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at TGMC will provide screenings during the months of June and July in the Houma area.

Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center (MBP) believes that screenings are the single most proactive way to lower the inordinately high cancer mortality rate in Louisiana. Today, Louisiana ranks number two in the United States in cancer deaths.

With the help of community partnerships, MBP is continuing to fight this disease by offering free community cancer screenings and education programs throughout our 18-parish service area. Year-to-date, MBP has held over 38 events and screened over 1,500 participants for breast, prostate, colorectal, and skin cancer. Despite widespread economic downturn, Baton Rouge’s Merrill Lynch employees decided that their charitable contributions were going to continue and their longtime support for Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s annual golf tournament was at the top of the list.

“It was like a perfect storm, and it would have been so easy for the employees to say, ‘it’s just not a good time.”

Thanks in part to Kurlas’ unwavering leadership and the committee’s refusal to make excuses, the branch’s charitable committee recommitted to the title sponsorship of the Mary Bird Perkins Merrill Lynch Open again this year and raised more than $35,000 in employee contributions.

Since 2000, Merrill Lynch has been its largest sponsor and has remained dedicated even through previously fluctuating economic cycles. With corporate dollars unavailable this year, the sponsorship depended solely on out-of-pocket employee funding. Last year the tournament netted $170,000 to support the Center’s mission to improve survivorship and lessen the burden of cancer through expert treatment, compassionate care, early detection, research, and education.

“I couldn’t have been more proud of the employees who decided to stick with Mary Bird Perkins and the committee members who stepped up and took on additional responsibility to collect funds.” In addition to the contributions to the

tournament, employees also donate thousands of dollars throughout the year to support MBP in the fight against cancer.

“Even in touch times, we have a responsibility to the community. With Mary Bird Perkins, we can see where our dollars go firsthand,” said Trina Bizette, senior client associate who helped ensure Merrill Lynch’s involvement this year.

Paul Langston, Senior Financial Advisor and VP, acknowledged that there probably isn’t anyone who hasn’t been touched by cancer in some form. “Everyone at Merrill Lynch rallied together this year to contribute what they felt they could. We all appreciate the efforts of Mary Bird Perkins.”

“Giving back to the community of Baton Rouge, which has been so good to us over the last 55 years, is part of our culture, it is what we do,” said Kurlas.

“If we have something first-class right here, we can keep families together and it’s a great win for our community,” commented Eric Waechter, Senior Financial Advisor and AVP. Merrill Lynch employees value the importance of Baton Rouge residents having access to a cancer center like Mary Bird Perkins.

When the mother of one employee, Senior Financial Advisor and VP Sanford Roy, was diagnosed with cancer more than ten years ago, she could have received treatment in Houston.

Instead, she chose to remain close to her own home and underwent treatment in Baton Rouge. “I am very thankful my mom is still here because of Mary Bird Perkins,” Roy stated.

With the help of Merrill Lynch, Mary Bird Perkins can continue its mission. The Merrill Lynch team agreed with Roy’s assertion: “Not everyone can say they’ve helped save a life, but we can by helping Mary Bird Perkins save lives. It’s a wonderful organization, and we’re so very proud to be a part of it.”

Give to Fight Cancer 2009 Annual Giving Campaign Kicks Off in August

Gifts and pledges Mary Bird Perkins receives each year comprise an integral component of the Center’s efforts to continue to fight cancer in southeast Louisiana. The husband and wife team chairing this year’s campaign is Brett and Renee Furr. Renee is an active volunteer within the Baton Rouge community and was recognized in 2003 by the Baton Rouge Business Report as an Influential Woman in Business. Brett is an attorney with Taylor Porter Attorneys at Law and a member of MBP’s board of directors.

“Recognizing that it is a unique year, the generosity of our current supporters is crucial,” said Brett. “But equally as important is sharing the Mary Bird story with businesses and individuals who aren’t yet involved with the Center, and asking them to consider making a gift to fight cancer.” With the many new businesses and corporations in the region, Brett said he would also like to hold more corporate presentations to give people the opportunity to participate.

MBP Establishes Awards Named for Hillar C. Moore and Louis D. Curet

A Volunteer Appreciation Reception was held by the Office of Development on the evening of January 29, 2009 at the home of Brett and Renee Furr to show Mary Bird Perkins’ sincere appreciation for each volunteer’s help in the fight against cancer.

Richard Lipsey, chairman, MBP’s board of directors, welcomed guests and presented 2008 Annual Giving Campaign Chairman Bill O’Quin with an award in recognition of his leadership of a successful campaign. Lipsey then announced the creation of two new awards and their inaugural recipients.

Louis Curet and Hillar Moore, Jr. were recognized with the first Volunteer Fundraiser and Outstanding Service awards, respectively, named in their honor. Accepting his award Curet said, “I feel particularly honored and humbled to be associated with this organization and award,” Receiving his award, Moore commented that “Twenty years have gone by in a hurry. The golf committee has done an excellent job and I will continue to help as long as I live…as long as I can. Somewhere down the line we’re gonna beat it (cancer).”

Louis Curet served as co-chair for the 2004 Capital Campaign for Mary Bird Perkins and personally solicited scores of campaign gifts.

He helped raise over $2 million for the Center to acquire a TomoTherapy Hi-Art System and create a joint academic and research partnership with Louisiana State University.

The funds from the campaign helped to establish an endowed chair in medical physics at LSU. He served for two years as a member of the board of directors of Mary Bird Perkins and currently serves on the board of directors of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Foundation as Immediate Past Chairman.

Curet has been an Annual Giving Campaign Volunteer Solicitor since 2002. Because of his significant and unique service contribution to the Center of its philanthropic efforts, Mary

Hillar Moore is the Founding Chairman of the Charity Golf Classic in 1990 that has netted over $1.2 million for Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center over the past 19 years.

He still serves as a member of the Executive Committee of the golf tournament, helping to plan and organize the tournament as well as solicit corporate sponsorships. Moore has inspired others to participate and take leadership roles in the golf tournament and other development initiatives of the Center.

He served as a member of the Board of Directors at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center from 1999 to 2005. Because of Moore’s specific achievements in launching a new development program and making a significant and unique service contribution to the Center’s Philanthropic initiatives, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center recognizes him as the first recipient of the Hillar C. Moore, Jr. Outstanding Service Award.

Growing a Legacy

Isaac M. “Mack” Gregorie grew up in South Carolina.

After high school he headed off to Georgia Tech to study engineering when, after only one semester, he was instead drafted into the U.S. Armed Forces.

Eventually, however, he returned to his alma mater and graduated in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering.

“In the fall of 1950, I came to Baton Rouge to work for ExxonMobil,” said Gregorie. “I met my future wife, Florence Kidd, there. She graduated from LSU with a major in French and was offered a Fulbright Scholarship. In the spring of 1952 we became engaged, and she decided to decline the scholarship. Since she was only 19 at the time, her parents were actually relieved about her decision,” Gregorie chuckled. The couple married in 1952 and had five children.

Gregorie retired from ExxonMobil as a Division Manager in 1994. Unfortunately, it was only nine years later – in the summer of 2003 – that Florence was diagnosed with lung cancer. “We went to Mary Bird Perkins right away,” stated Gregorie. “Florence wasn’t interested in going anywhere else. She was very smart.

She analyzed everything herself and when the cards were laid out, Florence made her own decisions.”

“When we met Dr. Lo at Mary Bird Perkins, he told us Florence was seriously ill, so we knew what we were up Isaac M. “Mack” Gregorie against,” said Gregorie. “Florence started smoking at age 15 and never gave it up, even with a strong history impressed both him and his wife the most was how of cancer in her family. Nearly a quarter of Americans age 65 and above have not created a will. The following example illustrates how failure to adequately prepare can circumvent the best laid plans.

Mary Hill was born, raised and died in the same small town. Her grandchildren picked apples from the very trees she helped her parents plant. She and her husband spent Friday nights each fall on the bleachers of the local stadium, cheering the home team, and warm days each spring planting flowers along Main Street.

Her five children never moved farther than an hour’s drive from home, returning often to help with their mother’s latest charity fundraiser or volunteer effort.

Mary died last year after a long and fruitful life. But of all the people and causes to which she'd dedicated herself, few received the recognition she had hoped to provide. Why? Because Mary died without a will. Despite her hopes of leaving each grandchild a little “dream” money and of creating a memorial fund in her late husband’s name to further her charitable work, Mary's wishes never materialized.

Forty-one percent of Mary’s estate went straight to the government since she had taken no steps to control estate taxes at her death. The remainder was divided equally among her children, according to state law.

Do You Need a Will?

A will is perhaps the single most important document you can own, although more than half of all Americans die without one.

You need a will if you have children or none at all. You need one if you are married, single, widowed or divorced. You need a will if you have a house, a car, a bank account or property of any kind.

A properly drafted will can also help you avoid paying unnecessary estate taxes. Perhaps most importantly, only through a will and careful planning can you benefit the people and organizations you care about most in the exact manner you have intended.

Your Will’s Expiration Date Once executed, your will should be updated regularly, especially under these circumstances: A birth, marriage or divorce in the family; a move to another state; a change in tax laws; a change in the status of dependent children; impending retirement; or a change in personal circumstances or needs.

Upon his wife’s demise, Gregorie gave a $10,000 bequest to Mary Bird Perkins through her will. He has now updated his own will for a second bequest to Mary Bird Perkins. When asked if he and his wife talked about charitable giving with their children, Gregorie said that they probably learned like he did – more by example than words. “My father died when I was three, leaving my mother with three children. We went to live with her father, a country doctor in a small rural community. We ate a lot of eggs and chickens that found their way through the door rather than cash. I suspect by the age of three I knew about giving.”

He said when he had children, he and his wife made certain they were aware that their parents gave to the church and other organizations that were good for the community. “At an early age, they understood that was the proper way to manage their lives.”

When asked if he would encourage others to remember charities in their wills, Gregorie was emphatic. “Certainly,” he responded, “if you have the ability to do so. It’s one’s obligation to give back.”
