C.A.R.E. Network Receives Tobacco-Free Living Partnership Grant SmokeFree Louisiana Program to Recognize Smoke-Free Businesses Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s C.A.R.E. Network was one of only five facilities in the State to receive a partnership grant from The Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living (TFL). The grant is for the C.A.R.E. Network to partner with TFL in promoting smoke-free public places and workplaces. The grant, payable over a three-year period, is designed to help protect Louisianans from the dangers of secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke contains a mixture of over 4,000 chemicals – more than 50 of which are known to cause cancer. “The objectives of SmokeFree Louisiana are to recruit businesses in our 15-parish service area to become smokefree, to recognize those businesses and to encourage the support of the community to increase the number of smokefree businesses,” said Lori McCallum, executive director, Mary Bird Perkins C.A.R.E. Network. The implementation plan for SmokeFree Louisiana will begin with East Baton Rouge, St. Tammany and Tangipahoa parishes and extend to 12 additional parishes over the span of three
years. Additional parishes targeted for the program include Ascension, Assumption, East Feliciana, Iberville, Livingston, Pointe Coupee, St. Helena, St. James, St. John the Baptist, Washington, West Baton Rouge and West Feliciana. A smoke-free business is defined as an establishment that does not allow smoking in any area of its indoor space, therefore providing clean indoor air and protecting the health of employees and patrons. Erin Moller, outreach coordinator, C.A.R.E. Network, will head up the SmokeFree Louisiana initiative. “Restaurants will be the primary type of business targeted,” Moller said. “Even though many restaurants offer non-smoking sections, employees are still subjected to environments with smoke and patrons are often in the vicinity of smoke, regardless of how effective the ventilation system might be.” In addition to free publicity, program participants will receive a window decal for public identification and will be listed on Web sites with links to the Mary Bird Perkins Web site, so the public can learn which restaurants and businesses are smoke-free. Interested businesses will also receive educational materials explaining the associated risks of secondhand smoke in their respective establishments. For more information on this program, or to enroll, contact Erin Moller at (225) 215-1274 or by email at smokefree@marybird.com.
