2006 Annual Giving Campaign Begins Community Fundraising Volunteers Want To Help Save Lives The 2006 Annual Giving Campaign volunteers kicked off the campaign in May with Campaign Chairman Paul Thompson, CitiGroup Smith Barney, at the helm. “As the community has grown, so has the need for the programs of the Center’s C.A.R.E. Network,” said Thompson. “With the increased population in the 15 Paul R. The goal of the Annual Giving Campaign is to meet this increased need.”

In addition to providing for the C.A.R.E. Network’s programs of education and early detection, the community’s involvement with the Annual Giving Campaign supports the Center’s mission to treat patients who could not otherwise afford it. “The bottom line is that the Annual Giving Campaign volunteers help save lives,” said Thompson. “That’s a humbling and motivating responsibility.”

The Annual Giving Campaign raised $134,000 in 1998, its inaugural year. Last year’s total was $962,000. This year’s volunteer fund-raisers, more than 80 ambassadors of giving, have set an ambitious goal of $1 million. They will be soliciting leadership gifts of $1,000 or more. Thompson announced that gifts of nearly $190,000 have already been pledged.

The work of the Annual Giving Campaign volunteers is crucial because their efforts help to provide access to those who need it most. People with no insurance, or those who are underinsured, are least likely to have access to early detection. “The C.A.R.E. Network’s mission is to reduce cancer incidence and mortality in southeast Louisiana by expanding prevention and early detection efforts in high risk communities and to improve the quality of life for those affected by cancer,” said Lori McCallum, executive director of the C.A.R.E. Network. “C.A.R.E. Network programs and services, including free cancer screenings, would not be available except for the generous support of the community.”

35th Anniversary (Continued from cover) Let’s take a moment to look back at the journey of the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center flame that continues to shine so brightly for patients and their friends and family members.

Through the generous and steadfast support of the communities it serves, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has enjoyed an exciting history of volunteer leadership that has taken it to the pinnacle of cancer care. A center of excellence and compassion, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has become a nationally recognized leader in the treatment and early detection of cancer.

From the outset, the Center was established to be available to all community members in need of its services -- regardless of ability to pay. This charge has remained near and dear to the Center’s mission.

Just in the past few years, $25 million has been invested in patient care treatment technology. The “Whatever It Takes” Capital Campaign provided for the purchase of the TomoTherapy HI-ART System as well as an innovative academic and research partnership with Louisiana State University (LSU). The Center also partners with BrainLAB Novalis to bring the latest technology to patients. And, this year marks the first early detection tour with the Early Bird mobile medical clinic, making nearly 100 stops to fight cancer.

In 1971, the closest choices for radiation treatment for cancer patients in Southeast Louisiana were in Texas or Alabama. They could not stay home and get radiation therapy. The community changed that.

Mrs. Anna Lispey, then chairwoman of the board of directors of the Cancer Society of Greater Baton Rouge, was contacted by several physicians who wanted to create a community-owned radiation therapy center in Baton Rouge for local patients. The doctors asked Mrs. Lipsey to contact community leaders who could help turn their dream into a reality. Mrs. Lipsey asked Dr. M.J. “Jack” Rathbone Jr., who chaired the Cancer Committee of the East Baton Rouge Parish Medical Society, to reach this goal.

They got to work immediately pulling together fifteen other leaders who formed the Cancer, Radiation and Research Foundation.

In 1968 the Foundation kicked off its very first capital campaign, which was capped by a major gift of a tract of land from a local businessman and philanthropist, Paul D. Perkins, whose daughter -- Mary Bird -- was recently deceased. The Foundation board expressed its gratitude by naming the Center for her.

Mary Bird Perkins Radiation Treatment Center opened its doors in 1971 and two more centers followed - one in Hammond in 1988 and one in Covington in 1998.

In 2002 the Center established the C.A.R.E. Network to educate the public about warning signs and screening recommendations for various cancers. It began offering free screenings for the uninsured and underinsured for skin, colorectal, prostate and breast cancer. To date, the C.A.R.E. Network has screened over 14,000 people and has 100 screenings scheduled throughout 2006.

My Perspective Thanks to dedicated support from all of you, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has provided patients with the best cancer care possible for the past 35 years.

As most of you know, a hallmark of Mary Bird Perkins is the kindness and compassion all staff has consistently shown patients from the day the doors opened. TomoTherapy Offers New Hope to Trudy Blanchard Advanced Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) Helps Young Mother Get Back to Life Trudy Blanchard is ready to get back to her children’s ball games. And after treatment with TomoTherapy, she can do just that. “My focus is back on my children,” said Blanchard. “I missed so many of their ball games. I don’t want to miss any more. I’m ready to get back to normal.”

The last two years have been tumultuous ones for 40-yearold Trudy Blanchard, her husband Todd and sons Dustin and Kyle. What began in August 2003 as a tender spot in Blanchard’s chest ultimately resulted in a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, involving multiple lymph nodes in her chest and neck.

She began chemotherapy under the care of her medical oncologist. Although said to be in remission when her scans were clear following eight months of chemotherapy, in October 2004 the pain returned. X-rays showed that the cancer had recurred in multiple lymph nodes in the chest.

High dose chemotherapy was followed by a stem cell transplant. However, cancer remained in multiple lymph node regions following those treatments. Blanchard’s choices were to undergo a second stem cell transplant utilizing donor stem cells instead of her own, which meant again enduring several months of hospitalization in New Orleans and isolation from her family, or to opt for radiation closer to home. She chose the latter and was referred to Dr. Greg Henkelmann at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Baton Rouge.

Dr. Henkelmann determined TomoTherapy to be the best possible treatment option for Blanchard. “Trudy’s initial tentative treatment plan employed conventional radiation fields that would have been delivered from both the front and back,” said Henkelmann. He explained that the conventional plan would have affected far too much healthy lung tissue.

“Due to the large complicated-shaped areas of cancer extending from her neck to her abdomen, TomoTherapy was the best choice—the only viable choice, really. Lung injury from conventional irradiation could have been fatal.”

and back. It is also able to reduce the size of the treatment margins around the cancer, in Blanchard’s case minimizing harmful effects to healthy lung tissue. In addition, the TomoTherapy machine—with its advanced image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) capability—performs a CT scan prior to each treatment, moving the patient to the precisely intended position immediately prior to treating.

“When Dr. Henkelmann told me the results of my CT scan done at the end of therapy, he said there was no evidence of cancer,” said Blanchard through her tears.

Five months after completing the TomoTherapy treatments, during a scheduled routine examination, Blanchard expressed concern about pain she was experiencing near her breast bone. “The PET/CT scan was repeated and showed one small area of lymph node recurrence out of numerous previously involved areas,” explained Dr. Henkelmann. “At this point we are re-treating this small field for four weeks with a curative dose. We are treating for a cure. Without TomoTherapy we would never have made it to this point.” ...Continued on Page 22

Diligence in Early Detection Annual Screening Mammograms Save Deloris Gray’s Life Deloris Gray’s five-year-old granddaughter Kennedi keeps asking her Granny when she’s going to start cooking again.

Recuperating from a recent mastectomy, Gray is working on getting the strength back in her right arm so she can stir up some of the family’s favorite dishes. “When I get well, the first thing I plan to do is cook my grandbaby a steak. She likes steak. She likes food,” laughed 56-year-old Gray.

Deloris Gray has good reason to be cheerful. What could have been a nightmare turned out to be “the best Christmas present I could have ever gotten,” she said.

Because of a younger sister who had breast cancer, Gray began having annual mammograms at the recommended age. She never missed. But when she lost her job in 2003 after 27 years as a unit secretary at a local hospital, she also lost her health insurance.

Gray found out that Mary Bird Perkins’ C.A.R.E. Network partners with other organizations to offer free mammograms for women without insurance. In 2004 she called for location details. “After I had it done, they called to tell me that I needed to come back for a retake,” Gray said. “They thought they saw something that wasn’t right.”

It turned out to be fine. The next year she was once again called back for a repeat of her annual mammogram.

Although concerned, Gray was grateful everyone was so vigilant in making sure she followed up on the irregularity that was found. “Even when they’re told something might be wrong, a lot of women don’t follow up and don’t go back. Thank God I did.”

A digital mammogram was the recommended follow-up in 2005. “When they told me the radiologist wanted to talk to me after I was through, I knew that wasn’t good,” she said.

“He told me I needed a biopsy and that he saw something that made him concerned.”

When the results of the biopsy came back, the doctor told Gray that she had breast cancer. Since she had been getting annual mammograms, it was caught at an early stage. “He told me about my different options. In the end, I chose to have a mastectomy,” Gray said. The surgery was performed on December 13, 2005.

Gray’s Christmas present came on December 21. The pathology report indicated that none of the resected lymph nodes contained any cancer cells. “I’m a living witness that early detection saves lives,” she stated.

“Women should know that a mammogram only takes a few minutes of your time and is an investment for a lifetime. They should pay attention to advertisements offering free mammograms if they can’t afford to pay. I’m so grateful that the services of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s C.A.R.E. Network were there for me.”

Professor Kenneth Hogstrom Visits Medical Physicists in Japan Shares MBPCC Best Practices Dr. Kenneth Hogstrom, chief of physics at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, visited Japan from April 1-10 to talk about medical physics in the United States and at Mary Bird Perkins. The role of medical physicists in Japan is primarily teaching and research, with a lesser clinical line of responsibility. In an effort to reduce the small chance of medical errors due to the ever-increasing technical complexity of radiologic technology, Japanese medical physicists are looking to the United States’ model for training and education of medical physicists. Dr. Hogstrom was invited to speak in Yokohama at the annual meeting of the Japanese Society for Medical Physics by its president, Dr. Masahiro Endo, and its Education Committee chair, Dr. Shinichi Wada. Dr. Hogstrom’s talk, “Education and Training of Medical Physicists in America,” was published in supplement no. 1 of volume 26 of the Japanese Journal for Medical Physics.

Prior to Yokohama, Dr. Hogstrom visited the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) in Chiba where Dr. Tatsaki Kanai, director, and Dr. Hiroko Koyoma-Ito, senior researcher in the Department of Accelerator and Medical Physics, provided a tour of their carbon, heavy-ion radiotherapy facility. Afterward Dr. Hogstrom delivered an invited lecture, “Future of Electron Beam Therapy,” to the NIRS staff.

In Tokyo, Dr. Hogstrom visited the University of Tokyo where he gave a seminar and met with Dr. Mitsuru Uesaka, professor in the Nuclear Professional School, to discuss the training of medical physicists. Also, Dr. Hogstrom was the

guest of Dr. Akira Ito, chief of medical physics at The Cancer Institute for the Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research, whose radiation therapy facility is similar in size to that of Mary Bird Perkins. The staff there was interested in radiation therapy practices at Mary Bird Perkins and Dr. Hogstrom delivered two lectures, “TomoTherapy at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center” and “Image Guided Radiation Therapy at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center.”

Computerized Medical Systems, Japan, funded Dr. Hogstrom’s visit, and its president, Yasuo Ashino was the host. Dr. Hogstrom learned much about medical physics and radiation therapy technology in Japan and feels that the visit will help build relationships between medical physicists in both countries. Ms. Shima Ito, daughter of Drs. Akiro Ito and Hiroko Koyama-Ito, is presently a student in Mary Bird Perkins’ Medical Physics Program.

Clinic Chief Gibbons Awarded Prestigious ACMP Fellow Dr. John Gibbons, chief of clinical physics at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, was awarded the status of Fellow of the American College of Medical Physics (ACMP) at its 23rd Annual Meeting held June 3-6, 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The ACMP consists of over 400 members, most of whom are senior clinical medical physicists across the United States. Dr. Gibbons joins Dr. Kenneth Hogstrom, chief of physics, as the second member of Mary Bird Perkins staff with this 6 Perkins Perspective

ACMP Fellows are elected by the Board of Directors for having superior competence, integrity and maturity in the application of their medical physics knowledge and skill, as evidenced to their peers by an outstanding professional reputation (includes teaching, leadership and research) over many years.

Many Factors Involved in Planning Patients’ Care Center To Implement Gated Therapy Many factors go into creating the best and most appropriate radiation treatment for a patient. In fact, there are many ways to combine treatment planning, IMRT, IGRT, 4D treatment planning and gated therapy to deliver the optimal radiation therapy or radiosurgery to the patient.

Mary Bird Perkins has these tools and is well on its way to implementing the latter -- gated therapy. Soon, gated therapy will be another cancer-fighting tool ready for use by our oncologists.

In the simplest of terms, gated therapy accounts for a patient’s breathing. For some treatments, the patient’s internal anatomy can move due to breathing. When a patient’s internal anatomy moves, the tumor moves. This can be very important in irradiation of tumors of the lung and liver, and other tumors of the thorax or abdomen. In gated therapy, radiation is delivered only during a selected portion of the breathing cycle, e.g. during expiration (breath exhaled). In other words the beam is only allowed to treat the patient during the exhalation phase of the breathing cycle. During that period, the beam is allowed to escape the machine, just as one would open a gate to let the crowd enter a carnival ride, hence the term gated therapy. This technique accounts for the slightest of tumor motion, resulting in even less normal tissue being irradiated.

How do treatment planning, IMRT, IGRT, 4D treatment planning and gated therapy work together to achieve optimal radiation delivery to a patient?

In short, radiation therapy is the delivery of multiple radiation doses to a volume of tissue that contains malignant tumors (cancer) or non-malignant tumors.

Radiation therapy is fractionated because this gives the normal tissue a better opportunity to repair (heal) itself during a course of therapy that could last as long as seven weeks. Radiation surgery is the delivery of a radiation dose in a single fraction. In both cases, the treatment objective is to kill the tumor cells, sparing the nearby healthy tissue and critical organs.

Treatment planning allows the radiation oncologist to prescribe the optimal treatment strategy. The treatment plan can involve many beams of differing size, direction, intensity and energy. Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), the variation of intensity across each radiation beam, is the most sophisticated strategy for planning, and it can produce a distribution of dose that is customized to fit the tumor shape while giving a low, acceptable dose to nearby critical structures. Its treatment planning is quite complex, often requiring hours of computer calculations.

With the tailoring of dose distributions to more precisely fit the tumor, it is important that the radiation beams and the patient are exactly aligned, correcting for any variation in position due to setting up the patient in treatment position each day or due to movement of internal organs. Correct aim can be accomplished with image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) using x-ray images of the patient. Presently Mary Bird Perkins aligns patients using orthogonal x-rays on BrainLAB Novalis or megavoltage x-ray CT on the TomoTherapy HI-ART System.

Mary Bird Perkins now uses CT scan data taken throughout the respiratory cycle, referred to as four dimensional (4D) treatment planning. Using these data, the movement of individual tumors can be visualized allowing patientspecific margins around the tumor to be used to design smaller treatment beams. Soon, the implementation of gated therapy will further enhance the Center’s efforts to deliver the most sophisticated radiation therapy available.

Cancer Awareness Partnership with Mayor Continues

Early Detection in the Florida Parishes Hammond Mayor Visits Early Bird

EBR Mayor-President Holden on Board for Upcoming Outreaches East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Melvin “Kip” Holden has a passionate belief in the importance of early detection where cancer is concerned.

As a participant in the United States Conference of Mayors’ Cancer Awareness Program, Holden kicked off his involvement in this program by putting his own spin on it. He partnered with Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s C.A.R.E. Network during March -National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month -- by appearing on television talk shows with Lori McCallum, executive director of the C.A.R.E. Network, urging people to attend the free screenings being offered in Baton Rouge and surrounding parishes. He also taped a public service announcement (PSA) about the importance of being screened for this deadly disease. The significance of this initial partnership was particularly poignant for the Mayor. His own brother succumbed to colon cancer in 1996. “I’m firmly convinced that had he been screened, he would be alive today,” said Holden. “At least he wouldn’t have died of colon cancer.”

In the following month, Mayor Holden worked with the C.A.R.E. Network and its minority cancer awareness coalition partners in observance of Cancer Awareness Week for African-Americans, recognized in April as part of National Minority Cancer Awareness Week.

West St. Tammany Chamber President Visits Early Bird

In May, National Skin Cancer Awareness Month, the Mayor again produced a PSA stressing the universal need for everyone to use sunscreen for protection from the sun’s harmful rays.

“We are so pleased at the Mayor’s commitment to the health and well-being of the people in the community,” said McCallum. “His involvement in proactively urging people to get up, get out and get screened is going to make a difference in the quality of life for many citizens of East Baton Rouge Parish and beyond.”

Future plans call for the Mayor to partner with the C.A.R.E. Network in promoting upcoming national cancer awareness months such as prostate cancer in September, breast cancer in October and lung cancer in November.

“One in three people in our state will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime,” said Mayor Holden. “Strategic and aggressive early detection is the most expedient way to lower this statistic. The community needs the free cancer screenings Mary Bird Perkins’ C.A.R.E. Network offers. I am proud to help support this effort.”

Network Continues To Go Where There Is Need Early Bird Also Serving FEMA Villages and New Orleans The recipient of a special grant for Katrina outreach funded by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, ENCOREplus is conducting cervical pap screenings in FEMA villages. The C.A.R.E. Network is loaning the Early Bird to ENCOREplus for this program.

“As long as there is a need, the Early Bird will be available to those helping meet that need,” said Lori McCallum, executive director of Mary Bird Perkins’ C.A.R.E. Network.

Hurricane Katrina has severely undermined health care in southeast Louisiana. In 2006, the C.A.R.E. Network and its Early Bird mobile medical clinic began offering screening mammography services to women displaced by the storm and now living in relocation villages in the Center’s service area. Partners for the breast cancer screenings include Woman’s Hospital and YWCA ENCOREplus. Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s C.A.R.E. Network is conducting colorectal and skin cancer screenings in the relocation villages as well.

In addition, until the crisis is over, the C.A.R.E. Network is providing screening mammography services to women without insurance in New Orleans. NOLA breast cancer screenings, in partnership with Woman’s Hospital and Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, are being funded by two national organizations – the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and the American Breast Cancer Foundation.

“There are no screening mammography services for uninsured women up-and-running in New Orleans yet,” said McCallum. “It is through the collaboration of partnerships and funding that we are attempting to fill the gap.”

This exciting, first-time event for patients, survivors and caregivers – rescheduled from October, 2005 due to Hurricane Katrina – will take place the weekend of August 26-27, 2006 in Baton Rouge, LA. Cancer…Living the Journey is a two-day conference designed to meet the needs of cancer survivors, their families and caregivers before, during and after diagnosis. The event is free and includes all educational sessions, lunch and refreshments on Saturday and all family activities on Sunday.

On Saturday, August 26th, at the Holiday Inn Select Executive Center in Baton Rouge, professional speakers will address an array of topics of interest to cancer patients, survivors and their caregivers. The morning keynote speaker is Chad Crittenden, recent contestant in “Survivor: Vanuatu” and cancer survivor.

After being diagnosed with a rare and deadly form of cancer, Crittenden had his right leg amputated below the knee. His philosophy for success is simple: get motivated! The luncheon keynote speaker is cancer survivor Billy Davis Jr. of the Fifth Dimension who, along with his wife Marilyn McCoo will talk about “Surviving & Thriving After Prostate Cancer.” The day consists of various breakout sessions, including The Caregiver’s Perspective, Chemobrain, Genetics, Coping with the Fear of Recurrence and many others. Throughout the day, the exhibitors’ area will provide an assortment of information on cancer and cancer-related topics.

Sunday is designed to be an afternoon of family fun at Florida Boulevard Baptist Church, celebrating survival and enjoying the opportunity to continue networking with one another.

There will be musical entertainment, food and beverages, clowns, face painting and carnival-style games, all at no charge.

Anna B. Lipsey Memorial Award Recognizes Volunteer Spirit Guy Jenkins Named 2006 Volunteer of the Year “Coming here is a bright spot. I wouldn’t give anything for my time at Mary Bird Perkins,” said Guy Jenkins, an 11-year volunteer veteran of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, who was recently honored with the 2006 Anna B. Lipsey Memorial Volunteer of the Year Award.

The award is named for the late Baton Rouge volunteer activist and community leader, Anna B. Lipsey, a founder of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center. The Volunteer Service Award is given each year to the volunteer who best exemplifies the volunteer spirit and dedication for which Mrs. Lipsey was known. The presentation was made by Anna Lipsey’s son, Richard Lipsey, and his wife, Susan, at the annual volunteer recognition luncheon given in honor of all center volunteers. The honoree is selected through a nomination and committee deliberation process.

Richard Lipsey told those assembled that nominating comments about Jenkins included references to him as “being like a light to patients when they come for treatment.” He said that Jenkins is seen as one who is

“Susan and I attend many awards ceremonies,” said Richard Lipsey, “but none are like this. The person is not being honored for what they may have done just one time – it’s for their continued dedication to the cause of serving patients at Mary Bird Perkins. Some have been doing so for more than 25 years.”

Donors Honored at Mary Bird Perkins’ Leadership Dinner Former Patient Shares Story of Early Detection and Survival D. Jensen Holliday Memorial Award Winner Named Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s 11th annual Leadership Dinner was held on March 30th at the Baton Rouge center.

The event was a celebration of thanks to friends of the Center for their continued support. Guests were given a tour of the Center’s newest radiation treatment technology and the Early Bird, the C.A.R.E. Network’s mobile medical clinic designed to take free cancer screenings into communities most in need within the Center’s 15-parish service area.

Robert S. Greer Jr., chairman, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center Board of Directors, told those in attendance that their cumulative gifts of more than $1.6 million in 2005 will be reinvested in the community through Mary Bird Perkins’ C.A.R.E Network in the form of free cancer screenings, awareness and education, research and cancer support services.

“At first it was quite frightening,” Daniels said, “but everyone I interfaced with made it easier.” He went on to explain that his radiation oncologist, Dr. Sheldon Johnson, carefully explained all of his options to him. “Their expertise in dealing with cancer patients and their desire to help people made it easier for me to accept this challenge.” He concluded his address to the assemblage of Leadership donors by saying, “You’re special people. On behalf of cancer patients and survivors, I thank you. I truly thank you.”

Dr. John P. “Jack” McNulty of Covington, Louisiana, was honored as the recipient of the D. Jensen Holliday Memorial Award. The award honors an individual in the communities served by Mary Bird Perkins who has made a sustained and significant difference in the fight against cancer. After his retirement from medicine, McNulty became a hospice volunteer and is now the medical director of Hospice of St. Tammany as well as St. Tammany Parish Hospital Home Health.

On Monday night, April 24, The First Tee of Carville, Louisiana, presented The Taste of Louisiana – “A Night in New Orleans,” kicking off a week of golf fund-raising activities for Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, including the Sprint Open presented by All Star Automotive Group and LEMIC Insurance Company as well as the WAFB Pro-Am, the Coca-Cola Junior Clinic, the MAPP Construction Shoot Out and the Merrill Lynch Mini-Pro-Am. All told, more than $165K was raised for the Center’s C.A.R.E. Network of free community outreach programs and patient care services.

“The silent and live auctions raised more than $75,000 for the Center,” said Bunnie Cannon, Mary Bird Perkins’ event director. “We couldn’t have done it without the auction volunteer solicitation committee and the support of all the area businesses and individuals who donated items.”

Steven Schneider, WAFB-TV sports anchor, served as emcee for the evening. Charles Landry, of Jones Walker, was the auctioneer.

Following professional play on Saturday, LSU Men’s Golf Coach Chuck Winstead and Tight Lies golfers took time to share their talents with more than 100 of the area’s youth during the free Coca-Cola Junior Clinic. Aspiring young golfers received personal instruction, tips and pointers.

More than five inches of rain fell on The University Club Saturday night and the course could not be made playable in time for Sunday’s final round. Brian Kortan’s (Albuquerque, New Mexico) third round 66 propelled him to the lead Saturday and the eventual win, taking home a check for $22,000. Scott Abbott (Dallas) and Chris James (Frisco, Texas) finished in a tie for second place, each earning $12,270.

Serving as the auction’s Web chair, Rayner implemented upgrades to the online auction that added to the huge success of the event.

As Donor Relations Director, Rayner is responsible for donor strategic planning and messaging within the Office of Development.

Formerly, Rayner worked at Louisiana Health Care Review as a communications specialist.

Highlighted in the last Perkins Perspective as one of Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s outstanding community volunteers, Rayner said, “Mary Bird Perkins is the marquis of cancer care in our community. Legacy of Manship Gift Continues Technology Touches Hundreds of Patients Every Year Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center joins the community in mourning the loss of a dear friend, Paula Garvey Manship.

In 2000, Mrs. Manship made a generous gift to the Center that secured critical technology used by physicians and dosimetrists in planning treatments. Patients coming to Mary Bird Perkins continue to benefit from this technology made possible from the gift she made in memory of her sister, Mary Nadine Garvey.

Because of Mrs. Manship’s gift, the staff and physicians are able to transport CT and PET images between all of the MBPCC facilities located in Baton Rouge, Hammond and Covington. This allows the radiation oncologist to review images in real time when away from the patient’s treatment facility. Treatment plans may be completed in a more timely manner and treatment portal images can be evaluated and approved from another site, saving the patient delays in treatment. Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center remains grateful to the late Mrs. Manship for her generous gift.

Jeff Boss Memorial Golf Tournament Supports MBPCC The Jeff Boss Memorial Golf Tournament committee presented a $5,000 check to Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center on Saturday, May 20.

Boss, a former patient at Mary Bird Perkins who passed away in 2003, was the LSU Athletic Equipment Manager from 1980-2003. The Jeff Boss Memorial Golf Tournament is a tribute to a man who gave so much to so many.

Artist Gail Thompson has created ceramic hard-fired tiger tiles for use both indoors and out. For those sold through the Center, she is donating 30 percent of each sale to Mary Bird Perkins. The tiles are $50 each.

Thompson accompanied a friend -- who today is a survivor -- to his treatments at Mary Bird Perkins several years ago. “I was impressed with the staff and their compassion. This is my way of giving back to those who give so much,” she said.

While most often placed on an easel for display on a desk or bookshelf, Thompson said the tiger tile has even been cemented into a patio. The tiger image can be made into any size, using multiple tiles, to create a backsplash behind a stovetop or bar, suggested the artist. “Whatever It Takes” Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center embarked on a Capital Campaign in 2004 with two goals in mind.

The first was to bring the TomoTherapy HI-ART System® to the community so that patients could receive leading-edge radiation treatment without traveling far from the comfort of their homes.

The second goal was to help fund the Center’s innovative, joint education and research venture with LSU’s Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Community Support Groups, Events and Activities Cancer Survivor Support Group of Pointe Coupée Cancer survivors, family and friends gather to provide support, share experiences and discuss successful coping techniques.

Candlelighters This group is for children with cancer and their families. The program includes monthly fun activities in a supportive atmosphere, a summer day camp, annual holiday party, tutoring, as well as individual and/or family counseling. H.O.P.E. (Bereavement Support Groups) Free to the public, two eight-week workshops will be offered to anyone who has experienced the loss of a loved one. The Hope Chests Organized by patients and facilitated by a nurse practitioner, this program’s purpose is to inform, encourage and meet the needs of breast cancer patients and their families. Look Good...Feel Better A program in which trained volunteer cosmetologists help female cancer patients deal with the side effects of treatment by teaching them beauty techniques to enhance their appearance and self-image. Man to Man Support Group This group offers education and mutual support for prostate cancer survivors as well as those currently undergoing treatment. Make Today Count: Baton Rouge, Lutcher, St. Francisville Chapters Through speakers, social gatherings, discussion of mutual concerns and sharing of information, Make Today Count offers support and education for cancer patients, family and friends. New Voice Support Group This support group is designed to encourage and support those who have had a laryngectomy and to assist with physical, social and emotional rehabilitation. Ostomy Support Group This group assists with the rehabilitation of ostomy patients through information, educational material and emotional support. Reach to Recovery This patient visitation program is for women who have had breast surgery related to cancer. Visitors are trained volunteers who have recovered from similar surgery. Sisters Supporting Sisters A support group for African-American breast cancer survivors, this organization provides a strong support base and emotional safe-haven for survivors to express fears, frustrations and concerns. This year marks the eighth year that Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center will hold its annual auction. The Center’s C.A.R.E. Network, which provides hundreds of free programs and screenings to thousands of community members every year, will benefit from the auction proceeds.

Center Announces New Board Members Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center has announced the election of three new members to its board of directors. They are Dr. Thomas J. Meek Jr., dermatologist; Donna M. Saurage, community activist; Paul R. Thompson, financial advisor, CitiGroup Smith Barney.

“We are very excited to have these three great community leaders agree to serve on our Board and look forward to working with them over the next few years,” said Greer.
