At first I didn’t know if I am going to do this topic or not, because I felt like a lot of people has done something with cosplay, but not commodification of cosplay, so I doubted a bit. However, I would like to know why the photobook is so popular in Asian countries, then I research a bit more, and decided to write this essay.

I started to ask myself some questions. In order to answer those questions,I need to research in depth with some history behind both cosplay cultures, however, after couple times with tutor I think my topic was too board, so I cancelled the Western cosplay parts, and focus on Japan and Hong Kong’s cosplay cultures. I am glad that I changed the topic because only explore the Japanese cosplay culture has already took about ⅓ of the essay, so it’s important to delete some parts that I don’t need.

I have found some theorists to support my point of view, although there weren’t a lot of books in the library about cosplay, the subculture books helped me with the identity and social parts in the essay. But in the essay I think I have put personal feelings, not subjective enough.

I had a chance to interview with a foreigner cosplayer when I was in Hong Kong 2 years ago. I am very glad that I made some notes. These helped me to understand part of the foreign cosplayers thought about cosplay in their view point, unfortunately I did record the interview but
