At first I didn’t know if I am going to do this topic or not, because I felt like a lot of people has done something with cosplay, but not commodification of cosplay, so I doubted a bit. However, I would like to know why the photobook is so popular in Asian countries, then I research a bit more, and decided to write this essay.

I started to ask myself some questions. In order to answer those questions,I need to research in depth with some history behind both cosplay cultures, however, after couple times with tutor I think my topic was too board, so I cancelled the Western cosplay parts, and focus on Japan and Hong Kong’s cosplay cultures. I am glad that I changed the topic because only explore the Japanese cosplay culture has already took about ⅓ of the essay, so it’s important to delete some parts that I don’t need.

I have found some theorists to support my point of view, although there weren’t a lot of books in the library about cosplay, the subculture books helped me with the identity and social parts in the essay.

But in the essay I think I have put personal feelings, not subjective enough.

I had a chance to interview with a foreigner cosplayer when I was in Hong Kong 2 years ago. I am very glad that I made some notes. These helped me to understand part of the foreign cosplayers thought about cosplay in their view point, unfortunately I did record the interview but

For the visual journal, I started with some very rough sketches because I didn’t know where to start. I have also tried different tone of voices and medias. So that I can find the best way for the visual journal for later development. After trying 4 different medias I found that the minimalist style is the best suited for the topic. Black outlines with some flash colours on the images, shows the focus point on the image that I want to communicate with.

I started this module by hearing the level 6 said this year’s cop is going to be better than in level 4. I didn’t believe that,however, when I heard we could do whatever topic we want, at first I was sure am I going to write an essay about cosplay, because I felt like there are a lot of cosplay essays has already written. I was a bit confused because I didn’t have a clear idea about what am I going to write, not like the first year we had a specific topic and areas to search. But after couple of the cop sections about specific subjects we could explore in the essay, I made up my mind to write an essay about commodification of cosplay.

At first I decided to write the comparison between Western and Asian cosplay culture, since I have some experiences about the Asian comic conventions and cosplay, I would like to investigate about the differences between the Western,mainly British and Asian comic convention cultures. In order to know more about both cosplay cultures, I needed to research both ways in depth. I have started with the Japanese one first, because I have seen the book mentioned cosplay is a word came from Japan. However, by only exploring the origin of cosplay has already took ⅓ of the essay, the identities and subculture of Japan, they are linked so I couldn’t separate the research,I felt like I have done quite a lot of research on the Japanese cosplay culture, but not much with the British ones. After the personal tutorial, I had a stronger feeling of changing the essay question to narrow the topic down, so that I can be specific to the question about comparing cosplay cultures in Asian areas. I think this is better than comparing 2 extremes cultures together, also as I have mentioned, I know some of the backgrounds of cosplay in Hong Kong.

As the starting point of the narrower essay topic, I asked myself some questions, some of them could be explain, but some don’t. I am always interested in why some of the Hong Kong cosplay cultures are well copied from Japan(the commercial bits), but not the others?(manners, identities) After I have done most of the essay, I went back to the visual journal and see what needs to be improved. To be honest, I think the first section of the visual journal wasn’t explored enough, the media I used and the method I used were a bit too dull, for example: the first couple of sketches, they looked messy and not professional. However, after testing some materials and different media testings. I found the best suits media and tone of voice to explore the visual research after the group crit and feedbacks. The feedbacks were very useful in the visual journal, because I wasn’t too sure am I going the right direction so I stopped testings, but after the feedback sections the comments I received were all positive and encouraged me to investigate more, with the comparison images, and the black outline with colours on. Although I understand which way I should draw, I think my time management wasn’t sorted well enough. Because I squished half of the visual journal, 30 pages in a short amount period, as the result the second part of the visual journal looked a bit rushed and messy, I think I have spent too much time on the essay but not enough time of the development for the outcomes. Also in my visual journal majority of the images were all looked a bit too similar, I need to change some of the drawings if I have time to redo them. Also I felt like I should have been using the blog to record the

transformative moments more often,for example changing the main essay topic from comparing Western and Asian cosplay cultures to just compare 2 areas of cosplay cultures.Although some parts of the blogs helped me with the essay writing, I still think that I should have considered the essay question in detail, so that I wouldn’t need to change anything in a rush.

I am glad that I started my research in the beginning of the year, also I have a semi-clear topic to explore not like last year, last year I wrote 2 essays because I decided to change the essay topic before Easter. This year’s cop is a bit more relaxed compare to last years. For cop 3 I think I am going to force myself to do some research and dissertation a bit by bit, also I need to be critical to the opinions, are they too objective or subjective. I need to understand the theorist more clear in the dissertation for next year.
